Characteristics and performance of layered two-dimensional materials under doping engineering

In recent years, doping engineering, which is widely studied in theoretical and experimental research, is an effective means to regulate the crystal structure and physical properties of two-dimensional materials and expand their application potential. Based on different types of element dopings, different 2D materials show different properties and applications. In this paper, the characteristics and performance of rich layered 2D materials under different types of doped elements are comprehensively reviewed. Firstly, 2D materials are classified according to their crystal structures. Secondly, conventional experimental methods of charge doping and heterogeneous atom substitution doping are summarized. Finally, on the basis of various theoretical research results, the properties of several typical 2D material representatives under charge doping and different kinds of atom substitution doping as well as the inspiration and expansion of doping systems for the development of related fields are discussed. Through this review, researchers can fully understand and grasp the regulation rules of different doping engineering on the properties of layered 2D materials with different crystal structures. It provides theoretical guidance for further improving and optimizing the physical properties of 2D materials, improving and enriching the relevant experimental research and device application development.

Recent Advances in the Spintronic Application of Carbon-Based Nanomaterials

The term "carbon-based spintronics" mostly refers to the spin applications in carbon materials such as graphene, fullerene, carbon nitride, and carbon nanotubes. Carbon-based spintronics and their devices have undergone extraordinary development recently. The causes of spin relaxation and the characteristics of spin transport in carbon materials, namely for graphene and carbon nanotubes, have been the subject of several theoretical and experimental studies. This article gives a summary of the present state of research and technological advancements for spintronic applications in carbon-based materials. We discuss the benefits and challenges of several spin-enabled, carbon-based applications. The advantages include the fact that they are significantly less volatile than charge-based electronics. The challenge is in being able to scale up to mass production.

Recent Advances in Fluorinated Graphene from Synthesis to Applications: Critical Review on Functional Chemistry and Structure Engineering

Fluorinated graphene (FG), as an emerging member of the graphene derivatives family, has attracted wide attention on account of its excellent performances and underlying applications. The introduction of a fluorine atom, with the strongest electronegativity (3.98), greatly changes the electron distribution of graphene, resulting in a series of unique variations in optical, electronic, magnetic, interfacial properties and so on. Herein, recent advances in the study of FG from synthesis to applications are introduced, and the relationship between its structure and properties is summarized in detail. Especially, the functional chemistry of FG has been thoroughly analyzed in recent years, which has opened a universal route for the functionalization and even multifunctionalization of FG toward various graphene derivatives, which further broadens its applications. Moreover, from a particular angle, the structure engineering of FG such as the distribution pattern of fluorine atoms and the regulation of interlayer structure when advanced nanotechnology gets involved is summarized. Notably, the elaborated structure engineering of FG is the key factor to optimize the corresponding properties for potential applications, and is also an up-to-date research hotspot and future development direction. Finally, perspectives and prospects for the problems and challenges in the study of FG are put forward.

Single-layer polymeric tetraoxa[8]circulene modified by s-block metals: toward stable spin qubits and novel superconductors

Tunable electronic properties of low-dimensional materials have been the object of extensive research, as such properties are highly desirable in order to provide flexibility in the design and optimization of functional devices. In this study, we account for the fact that such properties can be tuned by embedding diverse metal atoms and theoretically study a series of new organometallic porous sheets based on two-dimensional tetraoxa[8]circulene (TOC) polymers doped with alkali or alkaline-earth metals. The results reveal that the metal-decorated sheets change their electronic structure from semiconducting to metallic behaviour due to n-doping. Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations reveal a unique open-shell singlet ground state in the TOC-Ca complex, which is formed by two closed-shell species. Moreover, Ca becomes a doublet state, which is promising for magnetic quantum bit applications due to the long spin coherence time. Ca-doped TOC also demonstrates a high density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi level and induced superconductivity. Using the ab initio Eliashberg formalism, we find that the TOC-Ca polymers are phonon-mediated superconductors with a critical temperature T_C = 14.5 K, which is within the range of typical carbon based superconducting materials. Therefore, combining the proved superconductivity and the long spin lifetime in doublet Ca, such materials could be an ideal platform for the realization of quantum bits.

Surface functionalization of twisted graphene C32H15 and C104H52 derivatives with alkalis and superalkalis for NLO response; a DFT study

Herein, we present the detailed comparative study on geometric, electronic, optical and non-linear optical response of alkalis and superalkalis doped twisted graphene. The results illustrate that alkali metals and superalkalis interact with the central ring of the twisted graphene through non-covalent interactions which demonstrate the stability of the resultant complexes. NBO charges indicate the transfer of electrons from dopant (alkali metal atoms and superalkalis) towards twisted graphene sheet. Superalkalis doped twisted graphene complexes exhibit higher first hyperpolarizability values compared to alkali metals analogues. Among superalkalis doped complexes, K₃O@C₁₀₄H₅₂ shows the highest β_o value of 1.68 × 10⁵ au. In frequency dependent first hyperpolarizability analysis, strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response of K₃O@C₃₂H₁₅ complex is observed at both selected resonance frequency values (532 nm and1064 nm) whereas EOPE value of K₃O@C₃₂H₁₅ complex shows higher induced response at 1064 nm wavelength. The static hyperpolarizability (β_o) further increases under the influence of applied electric field. Among all complexes, Li₃O@C₃₂H₁₅ graphene complex has the highest β_o value (1.40 × 10⁵ au) under applied electric field along x axis when sheet is in y-z plane. This analysis will be an important guideline for future studies on twisted graphene based NLO materials.
