Ordered Bicontinuous Mesoporous Polymeric Semiconductor Photocatalyst

Photocleavable Polymer Cubosomes: Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Photorelease

Polymer cubosomes (PCs) are a recent class of self-assembled block copolymer (BCP) microparticles with an accessible periodic channel system. Most reported PCs consist of a polystyrene scaffold, which provides mechanical stability for templating but has a limited intrinsic functionality. Here, we report the synthesis of photocleavable BCPs with compositions suitable for PC formation. We analyze the self-assembly mechanism and study the model release of dyes during irradiation, where the transition of the BCPs from amphiphilic to bishydrophilic causes the rapid disassembly of the PCs. A combination of modeling and experiment shows that the evolution of PCs proceeds first via liquid-liquid phase separation into polymer-rich droplets, followed by microphase separation within this droplet confinement, and finally, membrane reorganization into high internal order. This insight may encourage exploration of alternative preparation strategies to better control the size and homogeneity of PCs.

Increasing the Accessibility of Internal Catalytic Sites in Covalent Organic Frameworks by Introducing a Bicontinuous Mesostructure

Introducing continuous mesochannels into covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to increase the accessibility of their inner active sites has remained a major challenge. Here, we report the synthesis of COFs with an ordered bicontinuous mesostructure, via a block copolymer self-assembly-guided nanocasting strategy. Three different mesostructured COFs are synthesized, including two covalent triazine frameworks and one vinylene-linked COF. The new materials are endowed with a hierarchical meso/microporous architecture, in which the mesochannels exhibit an ordered shifted double diamond (SDD) topology. The hierarchically porous structure can enable efficient hole-electron separation and smooth mass transport to the deep internal of the COFs and consequently high accessibility of their active catalytic sites. Benefiting from this hierarchical structure, these COFs exhibit excellent performance in visible-light-driven catalytic NO removal with a high conversion percentage of up to 51.4 %, placing them one of the top reported NO-elimination photocatalysts. This study represents the first case of introducing a bicontinuous structure into COFs, which opens a new avenue for the synthesis of hierarchically porous COFs and for increasing the utilization degree of their internal active sites.

Engineering mesoporous bioactive glasses for emerging stimuli-responsive drug delivery and theranostic applications

Mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs), which belong to the category of modern porous nanomaterials, have garnered significant attention due to their impressive biological activities, appealing physicochemical properties, and desirable morphological features. They hold immense potential for utilization in diverse fields, including adsorption, separation, catalysis, bioengineering, and medicine. Despite possessing interior porous structures, excellent morphological characteristics, and superior biocompatibility, primitive MBGs face challenges related to weak encapsulation efficiency, drug loading, and mechanical strength when applied in biomedical fields. It is important to note that the advantageous attributes of MBGs can be effectively preserved by incorporating supramolecular assemblies, miscellaneous metal species, and their conjugates into the material surfaces or intrinsic mesoporous networks. The innovative advancements in these modified colloidal inorganic nanocarriers inspire researchers to explore novel applications, such as stimuli-responsive drug delivery, with exceptional in-vivo performances. In view of the above, we outline the fabrication process of calcium-silicon-phosphorus based MBGs, followed by discussions on their significant progress in various engineered strategies involving surface functionalization, nanostructures, and network modification. Furthermore, we emphasize the recent advancements in the textural and physicochemical properties of MBGs, along with their theranostic potentials in multiple cancerous and non-cancerous diseases. Lastly, we recapitulate compelling viewpoints, with specific considerations given from bench to bedside.

Elastic microphase separation produces robust bicontinuous materials

Bicontinuous microstructures are essential to the function of diverse natural and synthetic systems. Their synthesis has been based on two approaches: arrested phase separation or self-assembly of block copolymers. The former is attractive for its chemical simplicity and the latter, for its thermodynamic robustness. Here we introduce elastic microphase separation (EMPS) as an alternative approach to make bicontinuous microstructures. Conceptually, EMPS balances the molecular-scale forces that drive demixing with large-scale elasticity to encode a thermodynamic length scale. This process features a continuous phase transition, reversible without hysteresis. Practically, EMPS is triggered by simply supersaturating an elastomeric matrix with a liquid, resulting in uniform bicontinuous materials with a well-defined microscopic length scale tuned by the matrix stiffness. The versatility of EMPS is further demonstrated by fabricating bicontinuous materials with superior mechanical properties and controlled anisotropy and microstructural gradients. Overall, EMPS presents a robust alternative for the bulk fabrication of homogeneous bicontinuous materials.

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Cubosomes as an Efficient Electrocatalyst with High Accessibility of Internal Active Sites

Porous carbon particles (PCPs) present considerable potential for applications across a wide range of fields, particularly within the realms of energy and catalysis. The control of their overall morphologies and pore structures has remained a big challenge. Here, using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursor and polymer cubosomes (PCs) as the template, nitrogen-doped carbon cubosomes (SP-NCs) with a single primitive bicontinuous architecture are prepared. SP-NCs inherit the high porosity of MOFs, generating a high specific surface area of 825 m2 g-1 and uniformly distributed active sites with a 5.9 at % nitrogen content. Thanks to the presence of three-dimensional continuous mesochannels that enable much higher accessibility of internal active sites over those of their porous counterparts' lack of continuous channels, SP-NCs exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction with a half-wave potential of 0.87 V, situating them in the leading level of the reported carbon electrocatalysts. Serving as an air cathode catalyst of the Zn-air battery, SP-NCs exhibit excellent performance, outperforming the commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Solution-based self-assembly synthesis of two-dimensional-ordered mesoporous conducting polymer nanosheets with versatile properties

Conducting polymers with conjugated backbones have been widely used in electrochemical energy storage, catalysts, gas sensors and biomedical devices. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous conducting polymers combine the advantages of mesoporous structure and 2D nanosheet morphology with the inherent properties of conducting polymers, thus exhibiting improved electrochemical performance. Despite the use of bottom-up self-assembly approaches for the fabrication of a variety of mesoporous materials over the past decades, the synchronous control of the dimensionalities and mesoporous architectures for conducting polymer nanomaterials remains a challenge. Here, we detail a simple, general and robust route for the preparation of a series of 2D mesoporous conducting polymer nanosheets with adjustable pore size (5-20 nm) and thickness (13-45 nm) and controllable morphology and composition via solution-based self-assembly. The synthesis conditions and preparation procedures are detailed to ensure the reproducibility of the experiments. We describe the fabrication of over ten high-quality 2D-ordered mesoporous conducting polymers and sandwich-structured hybrids, with tunable thickness, porosity and large specific surface area, which can serve as potential candidates for high-performance electrode materials used in supercapacitors and alkali metal ion batteries, and so on. The preparation time of the 2D-ordered mesoporous conducting polymer is usually no more than 12 h. The subsequent supercapacitor testing takes ~24 h and the Na ion battery testing takes ~72 h. The procedure is suitable for users with expertise in physics, chemistry, materials and other related disciplines.

Ordered porous nitrogen-vacancy carbon nitride for efficient visible-light hydrogen evolution

Photocatalytic H₂ evolution is a promising technology which could be instrumental in producing clean hydrogen energy. In regard to the photocatalyst, its band structure, morphology and light utilization have a significant influence on the H₂ evolution rate and stability. Herein, a three-dimensional ordered macroporous nitrogen-vacancy carbon nitride (3DOM V-CN) photocatalyst was developed by combining vacancies with 3DOM structure for visible-light photocatalytic H₂ evolution. This strategy preserved the structural properties of 3DOM to improve the light utilization and the specific surface area of the photocatalysts. Moreover, constructing suitable vacancies could trap electrons to facilitate the separation of photogenerated carriers, and extend the light absorption region of the photocatalysts by adjusting band structure, thus improving photocatalytic activity. Compared with CN (0.3 mmol h^-1 g^-1), 3DOM V-CN demonstrated a superior photocatalytic H₂ evolution rate of 2.3 mmol h^-1 g^-1 (λ ≥ 420 nm) while possessing excellent stability. This work provides an effective and low-cost strategy for the design of the photocatalysts with high activity and stability by simultaneously tuning the band structure and morphology.

Construction of PCN-222 and Atomically Thin 2D CNs Van Der Waals Heterojunction for Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) CN sheets have attracted extensive attention in the field of photocatalysis because of their shorter diffusion path of photogenerated carriers and abundant surface reaction sites than bulk CN. However, 2D CNs still exhibit poor visible-light photocatalytic activity because of a strong quantum size effect. Here, PCN-222/CNs vdWHs were successfully constructed using the electrostatic self-assembly method. The results showed that PCN-222/CNs vdWHs with 1 wt.% PCN-222 enhanced the absorption range of CNs from 420 to 438 nm, which improved the absorption capacity of visible light. Additionally, the hydrogen production rate of 1 wt.% PCN-222/CNs is four times that of the pristine 2D CNs. This study provides a simple and effective strategy for 2D CN-based photocatalysts to promote visible light absorption.

Metal Organic Framework Cubosomes

We demonstrate a general strategy for the synthesis of ordered bicontinuous-structured metal organic frameworks (MOFs) by using polymer cubosomes (PCs) with a double primitive structure (Im 3 ‾ ${\bar{3}}$ m symmetry) as the template. The filling of MOF precursors in the open channel of PCs, followed by their coordination and removal of the template, generates MOF cubosomes with a single primitive topology (Pm 3 ‾ ${\bar{3}}$ m) and average mesopore diameters of 60-65 nm. Mechanism study reveals that the formation of ZIF-8 cubosomes undergoes a new MOF growth process, which involves the formation of individual MOF seeds in the template, their growth and eventual fusion into the cubosomes. Their growth kinetics follows the Avrami equation with an Avrami exponent of n=3 and a growth rate of k=1.33×10^-4 , indicating their fast 3D heterogeneous growth mode. Serving as a bioreactor, the ZIF-8 cubosomes show high loading of trypsin enzyme, leading to a high catalytic activity in the proteolysis of bovine serum albumin.

Block Copolymer Self-Assembly Directed Synthesis of Porous Materials with Ordered Bicontinuous Structures and Their Potential Applications

Porous materials with their ordered bicontinuous structures have attracted great interest owing to ordered periodic structures as well as 3D interconnected network and pore channels. Bicontinuous structures may favor efficient mass diffusion to the interior of materials, thus increasing the utilization ratio of active sites. In addition, ordered bicontinuous structures confer materials with exceptional optical and magnetic properties, including tunable photonic bandgap, negative refraction, and multiple equivalent magnetization configurations. The attractive structural advantages and physical properties have inspired people to develop strategies for preparing bicontinuous-structured porous materials. Among a few synthetic approaches, the self-assembly of block copolymers represents a versatile strategy to prepare various bicontinuous-structured functional materials with pore sizes and lattice parameters ranging from 1 to 500 nm. This article overviews progress in this appealing area, with an emphasis on the synthetic strategies, the structural control (including topologies, pore sizes, and unit cell parameters), and their potential applications in energy storage and conversion, metamaterials, photonic crystals, cargo delivery and release, nanoreactors, and biomolecule selection.

Network Phases with Multiple-Junction Geometries at the Gyroid-Diamond Transition

A novel phase sequence for the transition from the double diamond to the double gyroid cubic phases via two non-cubic intermediate phases, an orthorhombic Fmmm (O⁶⁹) phase and a hexagonal P6₃/m (H¹⁷⁶) phase, is reported for specifically designed bolapolyphiles composed of a linear rod-like bistolane core with sticky glycerol ends and two branched central and two linear peripheral side chains. These liquid crystalline (LC) phases represent members of a new class of unicontinuous network phases, formed by longitudinal rod bundles with polar spheres acting as junctions and the alkyl chains forming the continuum around them. In contrast to previously known bicontinuous cubic networks, they combine different junctions with different angles in a common structure, and one of them even represents a triple network instead of the usually found double networks. This provides new perspectives for the design of soft network phases with enhanced structural complexity, inspiring the search for new supramolecular networks, nano-particle arrays, and photonic band-gap materials.

Stabilizing Differential Interfacial Curvatures by Mismatched Molecular Geometries: Toward Polymers with Percolating 1 nm Channels of Gyroid Minimal Surfaces

Soft materials with self-assembled networks possess saddle-shaped interfaces with distributed negative Gaussian curvatures. The ability to stabilize such a geometry is critically important for various applications but can be challenging due to the possibly "deficient" packing of the building blocks. This nontrivial challenge has been manifested, for example, by the limited availability of cross-linkable bicontinuous cubic (Q) liquid crystals (LCs), which can be utilized to fabricate compelling polymers with networked nanochannels uniformly sized at ∼1 nm. Here, we devise a facile approach to stabilizing cross-linkable Q mesophases by leveraging the synergistic self-assembly from pairs of scalably synthesized polymerizable amphiphiles. Hybridization of the molecular geometries by mixing significantly increases the propensity of the local deviations in the interfacial curvature specifically required for Q assemblies. "Normal" (type 1) double gyroid LCs possessing 1 nm ionic channels conforming to minimal surfaces can be formulated by simultaneous hydration of the amphiphile mixtures, as opposed to the formation of hexagonal or lamellar mesophases exhibited by the single-amphiphile systems, respectively. Fixation of the bicontinuous network in polymers via radical polymerization has been efficaciously facilitated by the presence of the bifunctional polymerizable groups in one of the employed amphiphiles. High-fidelity lock-in of the ordered continuous 1 nm channels has been unambiguously confirmed by the observation of single-crystal-like diffraction patterns from synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering and large-area periodicities by transmission electron microscopy. The produced polymeric materials exhibit the required mechanical integrity as well as chemical robustness in a variety of organic solvents that benefit their practical applications for selective transport of ions and molecules.

Bioinspired Nanonetwork Hydroxyapatite from Block Copolymer Templated Synthesis for Mechanical Metamaterials

Inspired by Mantis shrimp, this work aims to suggest a bottom-up approach for the fabrication of nanonetwork hydroxyapatite (HAp) thin film using self-assembled polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) block copolymer (BCP) with a diamond nanostructure as a template for templated sol-gel reaction. By introducing poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) into precursors of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and triethyl phosphite, which limits the growth of forming HAp nanoparticles, well-ordered nanonetwork HAp thin film can be fabricated. Based on nanoindentation results, the well-ordered nanonetwork HAp shows high energy dissipation compared to the intrinsic HAp. Moreover, the uniaxial microcompression test for the nanonetwork HAp shows high energy absorption per volume and high compression strength, outperforming many cellular materials due to the topologic effect of the well-ordered network at the nanoscale. This work highlights the potential of exploiting BCP templated synthesis to fabricate ionic solid materials with a well-ordered nanonetwork monolith, giving rise to the brittle-to-ductile transition, and thus appealing mechanical properties with the character of mechanical metamaterials.

Porous Polymer Cubosomes with Ordered Single Primitive Bicontinuous Architecture and Their Sodium-Iodine Batteries

Bicontinuous porous materials, which possess 3D interconnected pore channels facilitating a smooth mass transport, have attracted much interest in the fields of energy and catalysis. However, their synthesis remains very challenging. We report a general approach, using polymer cubosomes as the template, for the controllable synthesis of bicontinuous porous polymers with an ordered single primitive (SP) cubic structure, including polypyrrole (SP-PPy), poly-m-phenylenediamine (SP-PmPD), and polydopamine (SP-PDA). Specifically, the resultant SP-PPy had a unit cell parameter of 99 nm, pore diameter of 45 nm, and specific surface area of approximately 60 m²·g^-1. As a proof of concept, the I₂-adsorbed SP-PPy was employed as the cathode materials of newly emerged Na-I₂ batteries, which delivered a record-high specific capacity (235 mA·h·g^-1 at 0.5 C), excellent rate capability, and cycling stability (with a low capacity decay of 0.12% per cycle within 400 cycles at 1 C). The advantageous contributions of the bicontinuous structure and I₃^- adsorption mechanism of SP-PPy were revealed by a combination of ion diffusion experiments and theoretical calculations. This study opens a new avenue for the synthesis of porous polymers with new topologies, broadens the spectrum of bicontinuous-structured materials, and also develops a novel potential application for porous polymers.

Graphene-based photocatalytic nanocomposites used to treat pharmaceutical and personal care product wastewater: A review

Photocatalytic technology has been widely studied by researchers in the field of environmental purification. This technology can not only completely convert organic pollutants into small molecules of CO₂ and H₂O through redox reactions but also remove metal ions and other inorganic substances from water. This article reviews the research progress of graphene-based photocatalytic nanocomposites in the treatment of wastewater. First, we elucidate the basic principles of photocatalysis, the types of graphene-based nanocomposites, and the role of graphene in photocatalysis (e.g., graphene can accelerate the separation of photon-hole pairs and increase the intensity and range of light absorption). Second, the preparation, characterization, and application of composites in wastewater are introduced. We also discuss the kinetic model of the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Finally, the enhancement mechanism of graphene in terms of photocatalysis is not completely clear, and graphene-based photocatalysts with high catalytic efficiency, low cost, and large-scale production have not yet appeared, so there is an urgent need for more extensive and in-depth research.

Block Copolymer Nanopatterning for Nonsemiconductor Device Applications

Block copolymer (BCP) nanopatterning has emerged as a versatile nanoscale fabrication tool for semiconductor devices and other applications, because of its ability to organize well-defined, periodic nanostructures with a critical dimension of 5-100 nm. While the most promising application field of BCP nanopatterning has been semiconductor devices, the versatility of BCPs has also led to enormous interest from a broad spectrum of other application areas. In particular, the intrinsically low cost and straightforward processing of BCP nanopatterning have been widely recognized for their large-area parallel formation of dense nanoscale features, which clearly contrasts that of sophisticated processing steps of the typical photolithographic process, including EUV lithography. In this Review, we highlight the recent progress in the field of BCP nanopatterning for various nonsemiconductor applications. Notable examples relying on BCP nanopatterning, including nanocatalysts, sensors, optics, energy devices, membranes, surface modifications and other emerging applications, are summarized. We further discuss the current limitations of BCP nanopatterning and suggest future research directions to open up new potential application fields.

Bioinspired Materials for Energy Storage

Nature offers a variety of interesting structures and intriguing functions for researchers to be learnt for advanced materials innovations. Recently, bioinspired materials have received intensive attention in energy storage applications. Inspired by various natural species, many new configurations and components of energy storage devices, such as rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors, have been designed and innovated. The bioinspired designs on energy devices, such as electrodes and electrolytes, have brought about excellent physical, chemical, and mechanical properties compared to the counterparts at their conventional forms. In this review, the design principles for bioinspired materials ranging from structures, synthesis, and functionalization to multi-scale ordering and device integration are first discussed, and then a brief summary is given on the recent progress on bioinspired materials for energy storage systems, particularly the widely studied rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. Finally, a critical review on the current challenges and brief perspective on the future research focuses are proposed. It is expected that this review can offer some insights into the smart energy storage system design by learning from nature.

Balance of N-Doping Engineering and Carbon Chemistry to Expose Edge Graphitic N Sites for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Nitrogen-doped nanocarbon materials (NCMs) have been developed as promising metal-free oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts. However, insufficient attention on the balance of N-doping engineering and carbon chemistry significantly suppressed the revelation of the real active configurations as well as the ORR mechanism for NCMs. Herein, 1,4-phenylenediurea (BDU) with multifunctional blocks was designed for the synthesis of NCMs, realizing synchronous manipulation of N-doping engineering and carbon chemistry. The good balance between N-doping engineering (especially graphitic edge N configurations) and carbon chemistry (including the specific surface area, porosity distribution, and graphitization degree) at a pyrolysis temperature of 1000 °C resulted in the best ORR performance for obtaining N-doped carbon nanorod (NCR) materials. A general descriptor χ was then proposed for evaluating the balance states between N-doping engineering and carbon chemistry. The prediction of the ORR performance of NCMs from their physical properties as well as searching for the optimal active configuration from the relationships between ORR performance and different configurations can be realized from such a practical descriptor, which can also be extended to other nanocarbon-based metal-free electrocatalytic reactions for deeply understanding their electrocatalytic mechanisms.

Synergistic Modulation of the Separation of Photo-Generated Carriers via Engineering of Dual Atomic Sites for Promoting Photocatalytic Performance

The separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers is still a great challenge that restricts the practical application of photocatalytic technology. The design of spatial separation path for photo-generated carriers at atomic level provides an innovative approach to address this challenge. Herein, a facile dual atomic sites strategy, consisting of Cu-N₄ and C-S-C active moieties decorated on polymeric carbon nitride (Cu SAs/p-CNS) is reported to simultaneously achieve the highly efficient separation of photo-generated electrons and holes for boosting photocatalytic performance. As a proof of concept, the Cu SAs/p-CNS is successfully applied to the photo-oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), which exhibits 77.1% HMF conversion and 85.6% DFF selectivity under visible light irradiation. The activity is considerably higher than that of bulk p-CN, S doped p-CN, and p-CN supported Cu single atom catalysts. Theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that, during photocatalytic reaction, the isolated Cu-N₄ sites directly capture photo-generated electrons, while the surrounding S atoms bear photo-generated holes, which synergistically facilitates the separation of photo-generated carriers and thus results in enhanced photocatalytic activity. This study provides a new perspective for the rational design of high performance photocatalysts at atomic level.

Two-Dimensional MXene-Polymer Heterostructure with Ordered In-Plane Mesochannels for High-Performance Capacitive Deionization

The application of traditional electrode materials for high-performance capacitive deionization (CDI) has been persistently limited by their low charge-storage capacities, excessive co-ion expulsion and slow salt removal rates. Here we report a bottom-up approach to the preparation of a two-dimensional (2D) Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene-polydopamine heterostructure having ordered in-plane mesochannels (denoted as mPDA/MXene). Interfacial self-assembly of mesoporous polydopamine (mPDA) monolayers on MXene nanosheets leads to the mPDA/MXene heterostructure, which exhibits several unique features: (1) MXene undergoes reversible ion intercalation/deintercalation and possesses high conductivity; (2) mPDA layers establish redox capacitive characteristics and Na⁺ selectivity, and also help to prevent self-stacking and oxidation of MXene; (3) in-plane mesochannels enable the smooth transport of ions at the internal spaces of this stacked 2D material. When applied as an electrode material for CDI, mPDA/MXene nanosheets exhibit top-level CDI performance and cycling stability compared to those of the so far reported 2D materials. Our study opens an avenue for the rational construction of MXene-organic hybrid heterostructures, and further motivates the development of high-performance CDI electrode materials.

A Solvent-Polarity-Induced Interface Self-Assembly Strategy towards Mesoporous Triazine-Based Carbon Materials

Triazine-based materials with porous structure have recently received numerous attentions as a fascinating new class because of their superior potential for various applications. However, it is still a formidable challenge to obtain triazine-based materials with precise adjustable meso-scaled pore sizes and controllable pore structures by reported synthesis approaches. Herein, we develop a solvent polarity induced interface self-assembly strategy to construct mesoporous triazine-based carbon materials. In this method, we employ a mixed solvent system within a suitable range of polarity (0.223≤Lippert-Mataga parameter (Δf) ≤0.295) to induce valid self-assembly of skeleton precursor and surfactant. The as-prepared mesoporous triazine-based carbon materials possess uniform tunable pore sizes (8.2-14.0 nm), high surface areas and ultrahigh nitrogen content (up to 18 %). Owing to these intriguing advantages, the fabricated mesoporous triazine-based carbon materials as functionalized porous solid absorbents exhibit predominant CO₂ adsorption performance and exceptional selectivity for the capture of CO₂ over N₂ .

Recent Progress in Polymer Cubosomes and Hexosomes

Polymer cubosomes and hexosomes are polymer colloids with inverted lyotropic liquid crystal phases as internal structures. They are composed of regular networks of water-filled channels surrounded by a bilayer membrane made from amphiphilic block copolymers. Due to the uniform, tunable, and highly ordered porous structure, polymer cubosomes and hexosomes present numerous advantages over polymer micelles and vesicles, such as the high loading volumes for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances, large specific surface areas, and good mechanical and chemical stabilities. The polymer chemistry also enables unlimited molecular design to endow these polymer colloids with a lot of adjustable physical and chemical properties. Therefore, polymer cubosomes and hexosomes have attracted increasing attention for their potential applications in materials science and nanotechnology. This review outlines the recent progress in this field with an emphasis on the polymer architectures, the self-assembly conditions and mechanisms, and some application examples which are special for these inverted polymer colloids. It is hoped to provide some practical guidance for researchers interested in polymer cubosomes and hexosomes.
