On the Stiffness of Gold at the Nanoscale

Theoretical and Experimental Advances in High-Pressure Behaviors of Nanoparticles

Using compressive mechanical forces, such as pressure, to induce crystallographic phase transitions and mesostructural changes while modulating material properties in nanoparticles (NPs) is a unique way to discover new phase behaviors, create novel nanostructures, and study emerging properties that are difficult to achieve under conventional conditions. In recent decades, NPs of a plethora of chemical compositions, sizes, shapes, surface ligands, and self-assembled mesostructures have been studied under pressure by in-situ scattering and/or spectroscopy techniques. As a result, the fundamental knowledge of pressure-structure-property relationships has been significantly improved, leading to a better understanding of the design guidelines for nanomaterial synthesis. In the present review, we discuss experimental progress in NP high-pressure research conducted primarily over roughly the past four years on semiconductor NPs, metal and metal oxide NPs, and perovskite NPs. We focus on the pressure-induced behaviors of NPs at both the atomic- and mesoscales, inorganic NP property changes upon compression, and the structural and property transitions of perovskite NPs under pressure. We further discuss in depth progress on molecular modeling, including simulations of ligand behavior, phase-change chalcogenides, layered transition metal dichalcogenides, boron nitride, and inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites NPs. These models now provide both mechanistic explanations of experimental observations and predictive guidelines for future experimental design. We conclude with a summary and our insights on future directions for exploration of nanomaterial phase transition, coupling, growth, and nanoelectronic and photonic properties.

Nanoscale goldbeating: Solid-state transformation of 0D and 1D gold nanoparticles to anisotropic 2D morphologies

Goldbeating is the ancient craft of thinning bulk gold (Au) into gossamer leaves. Pioneered by ancient Egyptian craftsmen, modern mechanized iterations of this technique can fabricate sheets as thin as ∼100 nm. We take inspiration from this millennia-old craft and adapt it to the nanoscale regime, using colloidally synthesized 0D/1D Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) as highly ductile and malleable nanoscopic Au ingots and subjecting them to solid-state, uniaxial compression. The applied stress induces anisotropic morphological transformation of AuNPs into 2D leaf form and elucidates insights into metal nanocrystal deformation at the extreme length scales. The induced 2D morphology is found to be dependent on the precursor 0D/1D NP morphology, size (0D nanosphere diameter and 1D nanorod diameter and length), and their on-substrate arrangement (e.g., interparticle separation and packing order) prior to compression. Overall, this versatile and generalizable solid-state compression technique enables new pathways to synthesize and investigate the anisotropic morphological transformation of arbitrary NPs and their resultant emergent phenomena.

Peptide hydrogels: Synthesis, properties, and applications in food science

Due to the unique and excellent biological, physical, and chemical properties of peptide hydrogels, their application in the biomedical field is extremely wide. The applications of peptide hydrogels are closely related to their unique responsiveness and excellent properties. However, its defects in mechanical properties, stability, and toxicity limit its application in the food field. In this review, we focus on the fabrication methods of peptide hydrogels through the physical, chemical, and biological stimulations. In addition, the functional design of peptide hydrogels by the incorporation with materials is discussed. Meanwhile, the excellent properties of peptide hydrogels such as the stimulus responsiveness, biocompatibility, antimicrobial properties, rheology, and stability are reviewed. Finally, the application of peptide hydrogel in the food field is summarized and prospected.

High-pressure behavior of hydrophobically coated gold nanoparticle supercrystals: role of the structure

We report here an extensive high pressure small-angle X-ray scattering study on 3D supercrystals self-assembled from colloidal spherical gold crystalline nanoparticule (NPs). We used a large variety of NPs with different gold core diameter, from 2 to 10 nm, grafted with different ligands: alkane-thiols or oleylamine. The self assembly of these various NPs leads to supercrystals of different structures: face centered cubic (FCC), body centered cubic (BCC), as well as the C14 Frank and Kasper phase. Using a Diamond Anvil Cell to apply pressure on these wide range of samples, we provide a unique overview on the mechanical properties of gold NPs supercrystals. In particular, bulk modulii have been determined from low pressure regime and the different behavior between FCC and BCC structures has been interpreted as due to an easier restructuring of the ligand conformation in the FCC structure compared to the BCC structure. At higher pressure, a fingerprint of irreversible structural transition has been observed. We have ascribed this irreversibility to the sintering of nanoparticles and confirmed this interpretation by transmission electron microscopy.

Behavior of Au Nanoparticles under Pressure Observed by In Situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering

The mechanical properties and stability of metal nanoparticle colloids under high-pressure conditions are investigated by means of optical extinction spectroscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), for colloidal dispersions of gold nanorods and gold nanospheres. SAXS allows us to follow in situ the structural evolution of the nanoparticles induced by pressure, regarding both nanoparticle size and shape (form factor) and their aggregation through the interparticle correlation function S(q) (structure factor). The observed behavior changes under hydrostatic and nonhydrostatic conditions are discussed in terms of liquid solidification processes yielding nanoparticle aggregation. We show that pressure-induced diffusion and aggregation of gold nanorods take place after solidification of the solvent. The effect of nanoparticle shape on the aggregation process is additionally discussed.

Atomistic Simulations of the Elastic Compression of Platinum Nanoparticles

The elastic behavior of nanoparticles depends strongly on particle shape, size, and crystallographic orientation. Many prior investigations have characterized the elastic modulus of nanoscale particles using experiments or simulations; however their reported values vary widely depending on the methods for measurement and calculation. To understand these discrepancies, we used classical molecular dynamics simulation to model the compression of platinum nanoparticles with two different polyhedral shapes and a range of sizes from 4 to 20 nm, loaded in two different crystal orientations. Multiple standard methods were used to calculate the elastic modulus from stress-vs-strain data for each nanoparticle. The magnitudes and particle-size dependence of the resulting moduli varied with calculation method and, even for larger nanoparticles where bulk-like behavior may be expected, the effective elastic modulus depended strongly on shape and orientation. Analysis of per-atom stress distributions indicated that the shape- and orientation-dependence arise due to stress triaxiality and inhomogeneity across the particle. When the effective elastic modulus was recalculated using a representative volume element in the center of a large nanoparticle, the elastic modulus had the expected value for each orientation and was shape independent. It is only for single-digit nanoparticles that meaningful differences emerged, where even the very center of the particle had a lower modulus due to the effect of the surface. These findings provide better understanding of the elastic properties of nanoparticles and disentangle geometric contributions (such as stress triaxiality and spatial inhomogeneity) from true changes in elastic properties of the nanoscale material.

Gold nanospheres assembly via corona discharge technique for flexible SERS substrate

Noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) assembly substrates with strongly enhanced local electromagnetic fields provide new possibilities for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing. Although the external-electric-field-based self-assembly (EEFSA) strategy for decreasing NMNP gap in liquid phase is relatively developed, it is rarely described in solid phase. Here, by combining corona discharge technique (CDT) as a simple EEFSA approach on flexible substrate surface modification, a flexible SERS substrate medicated with gold nanospheres (AuNSs) is produced. Because of the CDT's peculiar discharge event, makes AuNSs aggregation simply achieved. The modified flexible SERS substrate is sensitive to the detection limit of ∼10^-5 mM for Rhodamine 6G (R6G), with a maximum enhancement factor of 2.79×10⁶. Furthermore, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation confirms the SERS enhancement impact of AuNSs-based substrate. This study not only provides a low-cost, simple-to-process, high-yield, high sensitivity, and activity flexible SERS substrate, but also suggests a more practical and adaptable NMNPs self-assembly approach.

Mechanics under pressure of gold nanoparticle supracrystals: the role of the soft matrix

We report on High Pressure Small Angle X-ray Scattering (HP-SAXS) measurements on 3D face-centered cubic (FCC) supracrystals (SCs) built from spherical gold nanoparticles (NPs). Dodecane-thiol ligands are grafted on the surface and ensure the stability of the gold NPs by forming a protective soft layer. Under a hydrostatic pressure of up to 12 GPa, the SC showed a high structural stability. The bulk elastic modulus of the SC was derived from the HP-SAXS measurements. The compression of the SC undergoes two stages: the first one related to the collapse of the voids between the NPs followed by the second one related to the compression of the soft matrix which gives a major contribution to the mechanical behavior. By comparing the bulk modulus of the SC to that of dodecane, the soft matrix appears to be less compressible than the crystalline dodecane. This effect is attributed to a less optimized chain packing under pressure compared to the free chains, as the chains are constrained by both grafting and confinement within the soft matrix. We conclude that these constraints on chain packing within the soft matrix enhance the stability of SCs under pressure.

The bulk modulus of 3D FCC supracrystals of spherical gold nanoparticles is determined using high pressure-SAXS measurements. The organic ligand shell is found to be less compressible than pure dodecane with the same chain length.
