Manipulation of Spin Polarization in Boron-Substituted Graphene Nanoribbons

Enhancing the energetic and magnetic stability of atomic hydrogen chemisorbed on graphene using (non)compensated B-N pairs

In this pioneering study for identifying atomic scale magnetic moment, a single hydrogen atom chemisorbed on pristine graphene exhibits distinct spin polarization. Using first-principles calculations and analyses, we demonstrate that the binding between a H adsorbate and a C substrate is substantially enhanced via compensated B-N pairs embedded into graphene. Surprisingly, the interaction can be further enhanced via non-compensated B-N pair doping. Our established prototype of orbital intercoupling between H 1s and hybridized pz of gapped band edges gives an insight into the enhancing mechanism. For compensated B-N doping, the conduction band minimum (CBM) is pushed upward, which induces stronger interaction between the H 1s and hybridized pz orbitals of the CBM. For non-compensated B-N doping, the orbital interaction occurs between H 1s and hybridized pz orbitals of valence band maximum, thus further lowering the resulting bonding energy due to the enlarged gap. This significantly enhanced interaction between H and C atoms agrees well with the results of charge localization at the gapped band edges. More importantly, the corresponding magnetic moments can be well maintained or even enhanced in both doping; here, one more H atom is needed for non-compensated doping, where its electron occupies the empty CBM. Our findings might provide an effective and practical way to enhance the energetic and magnetic stability of atomic scale magnetic moment on graphene and extensively expand the conception of non-compensated doping.

Orbital-symmetry effects on magnetic exchange in open-shell nanographenes

Open-shell nanographenes appear as promising candidates for future applications in spintronics and quantum technologies. A critical aspect to realize this potential is to design and control the magnetic exchange. Here, we reveal the effects of frontier orbital symmetries on the magnetic coupling in diradical nanographenes through scanning probe microscope measurements and different levels of theoretical calculations. In these open-shell nanographenes, the exchange energy exhibits a remarkable variation between 20 and 160 meV. Theoretical calculations reveal that frontier orbital symmetries play a key role in affecting the magnetic coupling on such a large scale. Moreover, a triradical nanographene is demonstrated for investigating the magnetic interaction among three unpaired electrons with unequal magnetic exchange, in agreement with Heisenberg spin model calculations. Our results provide insights into both theoretical design and experimental realization of nanographene materials with different exchange interactions through tuning the orbital symmetry, potentially useful for realizing magnetically operable graphene-based nanomaterials.

Localized magnetic moment induced by boron adatoms chemisorbed on graphene

Inducing local spin-polarization in pristine graphene is highly desirable and recent experiment shows that boron adatom chemical attachment to graphene exhibits local high spin state. Using hybrid exchange-correlation functional, we show that boron (B) monomer chemisorbed on the bridge site of graphene is energically favorable, and indeed induces a weak local spin-polarization ∼0.56μB. The localized magnetic moment can be attributed to the charge transfer from boron atom to graphene, resulting in local spin charge dominantly surrounding to the adsorbed B and neighboring carbon (C) atoms. We also surprisingly find that boron dimer can even much more stable upright anchor the same site of graphene, giving rise to sizable spin magnetic moment 2.00μB. Although the apparent spin state remains mainly contributed by Bpand Cporbitals as the case of boron monomer, the delicate and substantial charge transfer of theintra-dimerplays a fundamental role in producing such sizable local spin-polarization. We employed various van der Waals corrections to check and confirm the validity of appeared local spin-polarization. In terms of the almost identical simulated scanning tunneling microscope between boron monomer and dimer, we might tend to support the fact that boron dimer can also be chemisorbed on graphene with much larger and stable localized spin magnetic moment.

Molecular nanoarchitectonics: unification of nanotechnology and molecular/materials science

The development of nanotechnology has provided an opportunity to integrate a wide range of phenomena and disciplines from the atomic scale, the molecular scale, and the nanoscale into materials. Nanoarchitectonics as a post-nanotechnology concept is a methodology for developing functional material systems using units such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials. Especially, molecular nanoarchitectonics has been strongly promoted recently by incorporating nanotechnological methods into organic synthesis. Examples of research that have attracted attention include the direct observation of organic synthesis processes at the molecular level with high resolution, and the control of organic syntheses with probe microscope tips. These can also be considered as starting points for nanoarchitectonics. In this review, these examples of molecular nanoarchitectonics are introduced, and future prospects of nanoarchitectonics are discussed. The fusion of basic science and the application of practical functional materials will complete materials chemistry for everything.

Atomically Precise Incorporation of BN-Doped Rubicene into Graphene Nanoribbons

Substituting heteroatoms and non-benzenoid carbons into nanographene structure offers a unique opportunity for atomic engineering of electronic properties. Here we show the bottom-up synthesis of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with embedded fused BN-doped rubicene components on a Au(111) surface using on-surface chemistry. Structural and electronic properties of the BN-GNRs are characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) with CO-terminated tips supported by numerical calculations. The periodic incorporation of BN heteroatoms in the GNR leads to an increase of the electronic band gap as compared to its undoped counterpart. This opens avenues for the rational design of semiconducting GNRs with optoelectronic properties.

Addressing Electron Spins Embedded in Metallic Graphene Nanoribbons

Spin-hosting graphene nanostructures are promising metal-free systems for elementary quantum spintronic devices. Conventionally, spins are protected from quenching by electronic band gaps, which also hinder electronic access to their quantum state. Here, we present a narrow graphene nanoribbon substitutionally doped with boron heteroatoms that combines a metallic character with the presence of localized spin 1/2 states in its interior. The ribbon was fabricated by on-surface synthesis on a Au(111) substrate. Transport measurements through ribbons suspended between the tip and the sample of a scanning tunneling microscope revealed their ballistic behavior, characteristic of metallic nanowires. Conductance spectra show fingerprints of localized spin states in the form of Kondo resonances and inelastic tunneling excitations. Density functional theory rationalizes the metallic character of the graphene nanoribbon due to the partial depopulation of the valence band induced by the boron atoms. The transferred charge builds localized magnetic moments around the boron atoms. The orthogonal symmetry of the spin-hosting state's and the valence band's wave functions protects them from mixing, maintaining the spin states localized. The combination of ballistic transport and spin localization into a single graphene nanoribbon offers the perspective of electronically addressing and controlling carbon spins in real device architectures.
