(n,m) Assignments of Metallic Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Raman Spectroscopy: The Importance of Electronic Raman Scattering

Metal-organic framework derived hollow nitrogen-doped carbon sphere with cobalt phosphide in carbon nanotube for efficient oxygen evolution

The sluggish kinetics of the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) pose a significant challenge in the field of overall water splitting. Transition metal phosphides have emerged as promising catalysts for OER by modulating the charge distribution of surrounding atoms. In this study, we employed self-sacrificing templates to fabricate hollow N-doped carbon spheres containing small-sized Co2P embedded within carbon nanotubes through high-temperature calcination and phosphorization, referred to as HNCS-CNT-CoP. The obtained HNCS-CNT-CoP electrocatalyst exhibited excellent OER performance in an alkaline electrolyte due to the optimization of OH* adsorption energy and the large specific surface area created by the hollow structure. It demonstrated a low overpotential of 302 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 68.5 mV dec-1, attributed to the electron transport facilitated by the in situ formed carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, theoretical calculations revealed a suitable reaction energy (1.17 eV) in the critical formation of Co2P-*OOH for HNCS-CNT-CoP, significantly lower than the the rate-determining step of HNCS-CNT-Co (10.08 eV). These findings highlight the significance of hollow structures and Co2P-doping in the design of highly active non-noble metal OER electrocatalysts, enabling the reduction of energetic reaction barriers for future applications.

Recent Advances in Structure Separation of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes and Their Application in Optics, Electronics, and Optoelectronics

Structural control of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with uniform properties is critical not only for their property modulation and functional design but also for applications in electronics, optics, and optoelectronics. To achieve this goal, various separation techniques have been developed in the past 20 years through which separation of high-purity semiconducting/metallic SWCNTs, single-chirality species, and even their enantiomers have been achieved. This progress has promoted the property modulation of SWCNTs and the development of SWCNT-based optoelectronic devices. Here, the recent advances in the structure separation of SWCNTs are reviewed, from metallic/semiconducting SWCNTs, to single-chirality species, and to enantiomers by several typical separation techniques and the application of the corresponding sorted SWCNTs. Based on the separation procedure, efficiency, and scalability, as well as, the separable SWCNT species, purity, and quantity, the advantages and disadvantages of various separation techniques are compared. Combined with the requirements of SWCNT application, the challenges, prospects, and development direction of structure separation are further discussed.

High-speed identification of suspended carbon nanotubes using Raman spectroscopy and deep learning

The identification of nanomaterials with the properties required for energy-efficient electronic systems is usually a tedious human task. A workflow to rapidly localize and characterize nanomaterials at the various stages of their integration into large-scale fabrication processes is essential for quality control and, ultimately, their industrial adoption. In this work, we develop a high-throughput approach to rapidly identify suspended carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by using high-speed Raman imaging and deep learning analysis. Even for Raman spectra with extremely low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of 0.9, we achieve a classification accuracy that exceeds 90%, while it reaches 98% for an SNR of 2.2. By applying a threshold on the output of the softmax layer of an optimized convolutional neural network (CNN), we further increase the accuracy of the classification. Moreover, we propose an optimized Raman scanning strategy to minimize the acquisition time while simultaneously identifying the position, amount, and metallicity of CNTs on each sample. Our approach can readily be extended to other types of nanomaterials and has the potential to be integrated into a production line to monitor the quality and properties of nanomaterials during fabrication.

Electronic Raman Scattering in Suspended Semiconducting Carbon Nanotube

The electronic Raman scattering (ERS) features of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can reveal a wealth of information about their electronic structures. Previously, the ERS processes have been exclusively reported in metallic SWNTs (M-SWNTs) and attributed to the inelastic scattering of photoexcited excitons by a continuum of low-energy electron-hole pairs near the Fermi level. Therefore, the ERS features have been thought to appear exclusively in M-SWNTs but not in semiconducting SWNTs (S-SWNTs), which are more desired in many application fields such as nanoelectronics and bioimaging. In this work, the experimental observation of the ERS features in suspended S-SWNTs is reported, the processes of which are accomplished via the available high-energy electron-hole pairs. The excitonic transition energies with an uncertainty in the order of ±1 meV can be directly obtained via the ERS spectra, compared to a typical uncertainty of ±10 meV in conventional electronic spectroscopies. The ERS features can facilitate further systematic studies on the properties of SWNT, both metallic and semiconducting, with defined chirality.

Quantitative analysis of the effect of reabsorption on the Raman spectroscopy of distinct (n, m) carbon nanotubes

We quantitatively analyze the effect of reabsorption on the Raman spectroscopy of (10, 3) and (8, 3) single-chirality single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) solutions by varying the detection depth in confocal micro-Raman measurements and SWCNT concentration the in sample solution. The increase of the detection depth and concentration of SWCNTs enhances the reabsorption effect and decreases the intensities of the Raman features. More importantly, reabsorption exhibits different effects on different Raman features such as the radial breathing mode (RBM) and G+ band, strongly depending on the resonance degree of the scattered light energy and the interband transition of SWCNTs. When (10, 3) SWCNTs are excited with a 633 nm laser, the scattered light from RBM has stronger resonance with the interband transition of the SWCNTs than that from the G+ band, leading to a faster reduction in the RBM intensity and a lower intensity ratio of RBM to the G+ band. In contrast, when (8, 3) SWCNTs are excited with a 633 nm laser, reabsorption has the same effect on the RBM and G+ band intensities and thus maintains a constant intensity ratio of RBM to the G+ band. Furthermore, we precisely establish a quantitative relationship of the intensities of the Raman features such as RBM, the G+ band and their intensity ratio as a function of the focal depth and SWCNT concentration by theoretical calculations and numerical simulation, which reproduces the experimental results well. These results are very useful in the precise analysis of the Raman spectroscopy of SWCNTs and thus their applications in molecular detection and imaging.

Chirality Pure Carbon Nanotubes: Growth, Sorting, and Characterization

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been attracting tremendous attention owing to their structure (chirality) dependent outstanding properties, which endow them with great potential in a wide range of applications. The preparation of chirality-pure SWCNTs is not only a great scientific challenge but also a crucial requirement for many high-end applications. As such, research activities in this area over the last two decades have been very extensive. In this review, we summarize recent achievements and accumulated knowledge thus far and discuss future developments and remaining challenges from three aspects: controlled growth, postsynthesis sorting, and characterization techniques. In the growth part, we focus on the mechanism of chirality-controlled growth and catalyst design. In the sorting part, we organize and analyze existing literature based on sorting targets rather than methods. Since chirality assignment and quantification is essential in the study of selective preparation, we also include in the last part a comprehensive description and discussion of characterization techniques for SWCNTs. It is our view that even though progress made in this area is impressive, more efforts are still needed to develop both methodologies for preparing ultrapure (e.g., >99.99%) SWCNTs in large quantity and nondestructive fast characterization techniques with high spatial resolution for various nanotube samples.

A Review of Chinese Raman Spectroscopy Research Over the Past Twenty Years

This paper introduces the major Chinese research groups in the fields of biomedicine, food safety, environmental testing, material research, archaeological and cultural relics, gem identification, forensic science, and other research areas of Raman spectroscopy and combined methods spanning the two decades from 1997 to 2017. Briefly summarized are the research directions and contents of the major Chinese Raman spectroscopy research groups, giving researchers engaged in Raman spectroscopy research a more comprehensive understanding of the state of Chinese Raman spectroscopy research and future development trends to further develop Raman spectroscopy and its applications.

Enrichment of highly pure large-diameter semiconducting SWCNTs by polyfluorene-containing pyrimidine ring

The use of copolymers to extract and purify semiconducting SWCNTs (sc-SWCNTs) and metallic SWCNTs (m-SWCNTs) is widely employed. In this paper, the performances of two pyrimidine-alt-dioctylfluorene conjugated polymers in the enrichment of semiconducting SWCNTs are compared, and the subtle structural effects on them are discussed. It was found that both pyrimidine-polymers were more effective in wrapping the semiconducting SWCNTs than the metallic SWCNTs under the co-action of the pyrimidine and fluorene rings. Moreover, methyl groups on the pyrimidine ring of the polymer slightly contributed to the semiconducting purity, and the minor differences of sc-SWCNTs extraction between two pyrimidine-polymers are compared. Additionally, the average diameter of the selected SWCNTs is larger than that of the raw SWCNTs. The experimental results show the excellent selectivity for sc-SWCNT from both co-polymers: the index Φ i values for determining the purity of sc-SWCNTs were increased from 0.408 for P2 to 0.465 for P1, of which the selected sc-SWCNT purity is up to 99.9%. The resulting purity and the inexpensive availability of pyrimidine co-polymers make them suitable to be considered for effective sc-SWCNT enrichment.

Probing Exciton Complexes and Charge Distribution in Inkslab-Like WSe2 Homojunction

By virtue of the layer-dependent band structure and valley-selected optical/electronic properties, atomically layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit great potentials such as in valleytronics and quantum devices, and have captured significant attentions. Precise control of the optical and electrical properties of TMDs is always the pursuing goal for real applications, and constructing advanced structures that allow playing with more degrees of freedom may hold the key. Here, we introduce a triangular inkslab-like WSe₂ homojunction with a monolayer in the inner surrounded by a multilayer frame. Benefit from this interesting structure, the photoluminescence (PL) peaks redshift up to 50 meV and the charge density increases about 6 times from the center to the edge region of the inner monolayer. We demonstrated that the Se-deficient multilayer frame offers the excessive free electrons for the generation of the electron density gradient inside the monolayer, which also results in the spatial variation and distribution gradient of a series of exciton complexes. Furthermore, we observed the strong rectifying characteristic and clear photovoltaic response across the homojunction through measuring and mapping the photocurrent of the devices. Our result provides another route for efficient modulation of the exciton-complex emissions of TMDs, which is exceptionally desirable for the "layer- and charge-engineered" photonic and optoelectronic devices.

Bilayer Plots for Accurately Determining the Chirality of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Under Complex Environments

The chirality (n,m) determines all structures and properties of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT), therefore, accurate and convenient (n,m) assignments are vital in nanotube-related science and technology. Previously, a so-called Kataura plot that protracts the excitonic transition energies (E_ii's) of SWNTs with various (n,m) with respect to the tube diameter (d_t) has been widely utilized by researchers in the nanotube community for all (n,m)-related studies. However, the facts that both E_ii and the calculated d_t are subject to interactions with the environments make it inconvenient to accurately determine the (n,m) under complex environments. Here, we propose a series of bilayer plots that take into account the interactions between the SWNTs and the environments so that the (n,m) of SWNTs can be accurately determined. These plots have more advantages than the Kataura plot in concision, less data overlapping, and the suitability to be used in complex environments. We strongly encourage the researchers in the carbon nanotube community to utilize the bilayer plots for all (n,m)-related studies, especially for accurate and convenient (n,m) determination.

Electronic and Optical Properties of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes

In this article, we overview our recent theoretical works on electronic and optical properties of carbon nanotubes by going from the background to the perspectives. Electronic Raman spectra of metallic carbon nanotubes give a new picture of Raman processes. Thermoelectricity of semiconducting nanotubes gives a general concept of the confinement effect on the thermoelectric power factor. Selective excitation of only a single phonon mode is proposed by the pulsed train technique of coherent phonon spectroscopy. Occurrence of both two and four fold degeneracy in the carbon nanotube quantum dot is explained by difference group velocities and the intra/inter valley scattering near the hexagonal corner of the Brillouin zone.
