Versatile Large-Area Custom-Feature van der Waals Epitaxy of Topological Insulators

Selective Synthesis of Bi2Te3/WS2 Heterostructures with Strong Interlayer Coupling

The vertical integration of atomically thin-layered materials to create van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) has been proposed as a method to design nanostructures with emergent properties. In this work, epitaxial Bi2Te3/WS2 vdWHs are synthesized via a two-step vapor deposition process. It is calculated that the vdWH has an indirect band gap with a valence band edge that bridges the vdW gap, resulting in a quenched photoluminescence (PL) from the WS2 monolayer, reduced intensity of its resonance Raman vibrational peaks, improved vertical charge transport, and a decrease in the intensity of second harmonic generation (SHG). Furthermore, it is observed that induced defects strongly influence the nucleation and growth of vdWHs. By creating point defects in WS2 monolayers, it is shown that the growth of Bi2Te3 platelets can be patterned. This work offers important insights into the synthesis, defect engineering, and moiré engineering of an emerging class of two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures.

Band Topology of Bismuth Quantum Films

Bismuth has been the key element in the discovery and development of topological insulator materials. Previous theoretical studies indicated that Bi is topologically trivial and it can transform into the topological phase by alloying with Sb. However, recent high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements strongly suggested a topological band structure in pure Bi, conflicting with the theoretical results. To address this issue, we studied the band structure of Bi and Sb films by ARPES and first-principles calculations. The quantum confinement effectively enlarges the energy gap in the band structure of Bi films and enables a direct visualization of the Z 2 topological invariant of Bi. We find that Bi quantum films in topologically trivial and nontrivial phases respond differently to surface perturbations. This way, we establish experimental criteria for detecting the band topology of Bi by spectroscopic methods.

Effect of graphene substrate type on formation of Bi2Se3 nanoplates

Knowledge of nucleation and further growth of Bi₂Se₃ nanoplates on different substrates is crucial for obtaining ultrathin nanostructures and films of this material by physical vapour deposition technique. In this work, Bi₂Se₃ nanoplates were deposited under the same experimental conditions on different types of graphene substrates (as-transferred and post-annealed chemical vapour deposition grown monolayer graphene, monolayer graphene grown on silicon carbide substrate). Dimensions of the nanoplates deposited on graphene substrates were compared with the dimensions of the nanoplates deposited on mechanically exfoliated mica and highly ordered pyrolytic graphite flakes used as reference substrates. The influence of different graphene substrates on nucleation and further lateral and vertical growth of the Bi₂Se₃ nanoplates is analysed. Possibility to obtain ultrathin Bi₂Se₃ thin films on these substrates is evaluated. Between the substrates considered in this work, graphene grown on silicon carbide is found to be the most promising substrate for obtaining of 1–5 nm thick Bi₂Se₃ films.
