Wet-Chemical Synthesis of Chiral Colloids

Microtube self-assembly leads to conformational freezing point depression

HYPOTHESIS

Multi-walled tubular aggregates formed by hierarchical self-assembly of beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) hold a great potential as microcarriers. However, the underlying mechanism for this self-assembly is not well understood. To advance the application of these structures, it is essential to fine-tune the cavity size and comprehensively elucidate the energetic balance driving their formation: the bending modulus versus the microscopic line tension.

EXPERIMENTS

We investigated temperature-induced changes in the hierarchical tubular aggregates using synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering across a broad concentration range. Detailed analysis of the scattering patterns enabled us to determine the structural parameters of the microtubes and to construct a phase diagram of the system.

FINDINGS

The microtubes grow from the outside in and melt from the inside out. We relate derived structural parameters to enthalpic changes driving the self-assembly process on the molecular level in terms of their bending modulus and microscopic line tension. We find that the conformation of the crystalline bilayer affects the saturation concentration, providing an example of a phenomenon we call conformational freezing point depression. Inspired by the colligative phenomenon of freezing point depression, well known from undergraduate physics, we model this system by including the membrane conformation, which can describe the energetics of this hierarchical system and give access to microscopic properties without free parameters.

Template-assisted self-assembly of achiral plasmonic nanoparticles into chiral structures

The acquisition of strong chiroptical activity has revolutionized the field of plasmonics, granting access to novel light-matter interactions and revitalizing research on both the synthesis and application of nanostructures. Among the different mechanisms for the origin of chiroptical properties in colloidal plasmonic systems, the self-assembly of achiral nanoparticles into optically active materials offers a versatile route to control the structure-optical activity relationships of nanostructures, while simplifying the engineering of their chiral geometries. Such unconventional materials include helical structures with a precisely defined morphology, as well as large scale, deformable substrates that can leverage the potential of periodic patterns. Some promising templates with helical structural motifs like liquid crystal phases or confined block co-polymers still need efficient strategies to direct preferential handedness, whereas other templates such as silica nanohelices can be grown in an enantiomeric form. Both types of chiral structures are reviewed herein as platforms for chiral sensing: patterned substrates can readily incorporate analytes, while helical assemblies can form around structures of interest, like amyloid protein aggregates. Looking ahead, current knowledge and precedents point toward the incorporation of semiconductor emitters into plasmonic systems with chiral effects, which can lead to plasmonic-excitonic effects and the generation of circularly polarized photoluminescence.

Shape-Changing Particles: From Materials Design and Mechanisms to Implementation

Demands for next-generation soft and responsive materials have sparked recent interest in the development of shape-changing particles and particle assemblies. Over the last two decades, a variety of mechanisms that drive shape change have been explored and integrated into particulate systems. Through a combination of top-down fabrication and bottom-up synthesis techniques, shape-morphing capabilities extend from the microscale to the nanoscale. Consequently, shape-morphing particles are rapidly emerging in a variety of contexts, including photonics, microfluidics, microrobotics, and biomedicine. Herein, the key mechanisms and materials that facilitate shape changes of microscale and nanoscale particles are discussed. Recent progress in the applications made possible by these particles is summarized, and perspectives on their promise and key open challenges in the field are discussed.

Self-Assembled Open Porous Nanoparticle Superstructures

Imparting porosity to inorganic nanoparticle assemblies to build up self-assembled open porous nanoparticle superstructures represents one of the most challenging issues and will reshape the property and application scope of traditional inorganic nanoparticle solids. Herein, we discovered how to engineer open pores into diverse ordered nanoparticle superstructures via their inclusion-induced assembly within 1D nanotubes, akin to the molecular host-guest complexation. The open porous structure of self-assembled composites is generated from nonclose-packing of nanoparticles in 1D confined space. Tuning the size ratios of the tube-to-nanoparticle enables the structural modulation of these porous nanoparticle superstructures, with symmetries such as C₁, zigzag, C₂, C₄, and C₅. Moreover, when the internal surface of the nanotubes is blocked by molecular additives, the nanoparticles would switch their assembly pathway and self-assemble on the external surface of the nanotubes without the formation of porous nanoparticle assemblies. We also show that the open porous nanoparticle superstructures can be ideal candidate for catalysis with accelerated reaction rates.

Depletion-Induced Chiral Chain Formation of Magnetic Spheres

Experimental evidence is presented for the spontaneous formation of chiral configurations in bulk dispersions of magnetized colloids that interact by a combination of anisotropic dipolar interactions and isotropic depletion attractions. The colloids are superparamagnetic silica spheres, magnetized and aligned by a carefully tuned uniform external magnetic field; isotropic attractions are induced by using poly(ethylene oxide) polymers as depleting agents. At specific polymer concentrations, sphere chains wind around each other to form helical structures–of the type that previously have only been observed in simulations on small sets of unconfined dipolar spheres with additional isotropic interactions.

Controllable synthesis of patchy particles with tunable geometry and orthogonal chemistry

HYPOTHESIS

Self-assembly using anisotropic colloidal building blocks may lead to superstructures similar to those found in molecular systems yet can have unique optical, electronic, and structural properties. To widen the spectrum of achievable superstructures and related properties, significant effort was devoted to the synthesis of new types of colloidal particles. Despite these efforts, the preparation of anisotropic colloids carrying chemically orthogonal anchor groups on distinct surface patches remains an elusive challenge.

EXPERIMENTS

We report a simple yet effective method for synthesizing patchy particles via seed-mediated heterogeneous nucleation. Key to this procedure is the use of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TPM) or 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl acrylate (TMSPA), which can form patches on a variety of functional polymer seeds via a nucleation and growth mechanism.

FINDINGS

A family of anisotropic colloids with tunable numbers of patches and patch arrangements were prepared. By continuously feeding TPM or TMSPA the geometry of the colloids could be adjusted accurately. Furthermore, the patches could be reshaped by selectively polymerizing and/or solvating the individual colloidal compartments. Relying on the chemically distinct properties of the TPM/TMSPA and seed-derived domains, both types of patches could be functionalized independently. Combining detailed control over the patch chemistry and geometry opens new avenues for colloidal self-assembly.

SERS and plasmonic heating efficiency from anisotropic core/satellite superstructures

The optical properties of nanoparticle assemblies can be tailored via hybridization of plasmon modes. Isotropic core/satellite superstructures made of spherical nanoparticles are known to exhibit coupled modes with a strongly scattering (radiative) character, and provide hot spots yielding high activity in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). However, to complement this functionality with plasmonic heating, additional absorbing (non-radiative) modes are required. We introduce herein anisotropic superstructures formed by decorating a central nanorod with spherical satellite nanoparticles, which feature two coupled modes that allow application for both SERS and heating. On the basis of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and electromagnetic simulations, the origin of the coupled modes is disclosed and thus serves as a basis toward alternative designs of functional superstructures. This work represents a proof-of-principle for the combination of high SERS efficiency with efficient plasmonic heating by near-infrared irradiation.
