High-Frequency Elastic Coupling at the Interface of van der Waals Nanolayers Imaged by Picosecond Ultrasonics

Electromechanical Origin of Phonon Dynamics Exhibiting Tunable Anisotropic Heat Transport in Layered Nanostructures

Owing to the structural characteristics of 2D layered nanomaterials, anisotropic thermal conductivity is considered an attractive design factor for constructing efficient heat-transfer pathways. In this study, the electromechanical origin of anisotropic thermal conduction in Ti3 C2 O2 M (M = Li, Na, K) is investigated at the atomic scale using theoretical multiscale analysis. The results demonstrate that the acoustic and optical phonon modes drive interlayer and intralayer heat conduction, respectively. Further, the lower the atomic number of the alkali ions intercalated in the Ti3 C2 O2 layer, the more immediately it responds to externally applied oscillations owing to its low inertia and high electrostatic force. The Li-ion layer exhibits an instantaneous response to vibrational excitations from an external source, making it transparent to higher phonon modes under interlayer and intralayer thermal conduction. The electromechanical modulation properties of the ion layer are further elucidated, providing practical insights into the design of anisotropic thermal paths.

Hypersound tomography of graphitized layers buried into diamond matrix

Acoustic properties of buried graphitized layers in diamond formed by ion implantation followed by annealing were studied using the picosecond ultrasonic technique with spatial resolution. Two methods of elastic pulse generation were used: heating an aluminum film deposited on a diamond sample by femtosecond laser pulses and direct illumination of the graphitized layers by these pulses. We applied a multilayered model of the acousto-optical response to fit experimental results and estimate the distribution of the acoustical parameters (wave resistance, viscoelastic damping, and longitudinal sound speed) of the structures under study in depth. It was found that unique sets of spectral lines are present in the Fourier spectra of measured responses in regions with different internal structures. Mapping of the Fourier spectra made it possible to visualize regions with different internal structures. The combined use of depth profiling and mapping can serve as a tool for hypersound tomography.

Towards shaping picosecond strain pulses via magnetostrictive transducers

Using time-resolved x-ray diffraction, we demonstrate the manipulation of the picosecond strain response of a metallic heterostructure consisting of a dysprosium (Dy) transducer and a niobium (Nb) detection layer by an external magnetic field. We utilize the first-order ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic phase transition of the Dy layer, which provides an additional large contractive stress upon laser excitation compared to its zero-field response. This enhances the laser-induced contraction of the transducer and changes the shape of the picosecond strain pulses driven in Dy and detected within the buried Nb layer. Based on our experiment with rare-earth metals we discuss required properties for functional transducers, which may allow for novel field-control of the emitted picosecond strain pulses.

3D Hypersound Microscopy of van der Waals Heterostructures

The mechanical properties of the layered crystals in the few layer limit are largely unexplored. We employ a picosecond ultrasonic technique to access the corresponding mechanical parameters. Temporal variation of the reflection coefficient of the Al film that covers hBN/WSe₂/hBN (where hBN is hexagonal boron nitride) heterostructures on a sapphire substrate after the femtosecond laser pulse excitation is carefully measured using an interferometric technique with spatial resolution. The laser pulse generates a broadband sound wave packet propagating perpendicularly to the Al plane and partially reflecting from the heterostructural interfaces. The demonstrated technique allows one to resolve a WSe₂ monolayer embedded in hBN. We apply a multilayered model of the optoacoustical response to evaluate the mechanical parameters, in particular, the rigidity of the interfaces. Mapping of the Fourier spectra of the response visualizes different composition regions and may serve as an acoustic tomography tool. Almost zero phonon dissipation below 150 GHz demonstrates the van der Waals heterostructures' potential for nanoacoustical applications.

Self-Sealing Complex Oxide Resonators

Although 2D materials hold great potential for next-generation pressure sensors, recent studies revealed that gases permeate along the membrane-surface interface, necessitating additional sealing procedures. In this work, we demonstrate the use of free-standing complex oxides as self-sealing membranes that allow the reference cavity beneath to be sealed by a simple anneal. To test the hermeticity, we study the gas permeation time constants in nanomechanical resonators made from SrRuO₃ and SrTiO₃ membranes suspended over SiO₂/Si cavities which show an improvement up to 4 orders of magnitude in the permeation time constant after annealing the devices. Similar devices fabricated on Si₃N₄/Si do not show such improvements, suggesting that the adhesion increase over SiO₂ is mediated by oxygen bonds that are formed at the SiO₂/complex oxide interface during the self-sealing anneal. Picosecond ultrasonics measurements confirm the improvement in the adhesion by 70% after annealing.

Coherent control of interlayer vibrations in Bi2Se3 van der Waals thin-films

Interlayer vibrations with discrete quantized modes in two-dimensional (2D) materials can be excited by ultrafast light due to the inherent low dimensionality and van der Waals force as a restoring force. Controlling such interlayer vibrations in layered materials, which are closely related to fundamental nanomechanical interactions and thermal transport, in spatial- and time-domain provides an in-depth understanding of condensed matters and potential applications for advanced phononic and photonics devices. The manipulation of interlayer vibrational modes has been implemented in a spatial domain through material design to develop novel optoelectronic and phononic devices with various 2D materials, but such control in a time domain is still lacking. We present an all-optical method for controlling the interlayer vibrations in a highly precise manner with Bi₂Se₃ as a promising optoelectronic and thermoelasticity material in layered structures using a coherently controlled pump and probe scheme. The observed thickness-dependent fast interlayer breathing modes and substrate-induced slow interfacial modes can be exactly explained by a modified linear chain model including coupling effect with substrate. In addition, the results of coherent control experiments also agree with the simulation results based on the interference of interlayer vibrations. This investigation is universally applicable for diverse 2D materials and provides insight into the interlayer vibration-related dynamics and novel device implementation based on an ultrafast timescale interlayer-spacing modulation scheme.

Mechanical Properties of Nanoporous Metallic Ultrathin Films: A Paradigmatic Case

Nanoporous ultrathin films, constituted by a slab less than 100 nm thick and a certain void volume fraction provided by nanopores, are emerging as a new class of systems with a wide range of possible applications, including electrochemistry, energy storage, gas sensing and supercapacitors. The film porosity and morphology strongly affect nanoporous films mechanical properties, the knowledge of which is fundamental for designing films for specific applications. To unveil the relationships among the morphology, structure and mechanical response, a comprehensive and non-destructive investigation of a model system was sought. In this review, we examined the paradigmatic case of a nanoporous, granular, metallic ultrathin film with comprehensive bottom-up and top-down approaches, both experimentals and theoreticals. The granular film was made of Ag nanoparticles deposited by gas-phase synthesis, thus providing a solvent-free and ultrapure nanoporous system at room temperature. The results, bearing generality beyond the specific model system, are discussed for several applications specific to the morphological and mechanical properties of the investigated films, including bendable electronics, membrane separation and nanofluidic sensing.

Picosecond ultrasonics with a free-running dual-comb laser

We present a free-running 80-MHz dual-comb polarization-multiplexed solid-state laser which delivers 1.8 W of average power with 110-fs pulse duration per comb. With a high-sensitivity pump-probe setup, we apply this free-running dual-comb laser to picosecond ultrasonic measurements. The ultrasonic signatures in a semiconductor multi-quantum-well structure originating from the quantum wells and superlattice regions are revealed and discussed. We further demonstrate ultrasonic measurements on a thin-film metalized sample and compare these measurements to ones obtained with a pair of locked femtosecond lasers. Our data show that a free-running dual-comb laser is well-suited for picosecond ultrasonic measurements and thus it offers a significant reduction in complexity and cost for this widely adopted non-destructive testing technique.

Time-Domain Investigations of Coherent Phonons in van der Waals Thin Films

Coherent phonons can be launched in materials upon localized pulsed optical excitation, and be subsequently followed in time-domain, with a sub-picosecond resolution, using a time-delayed pulsed probe. This technique yields characterization of mechanical, optical, and electronic properties at the nanoscale, and is taken advantage of for investigations in material science, physics, chemistry, and biology. Here we review the use of this experimental method applied to the emerging field of homo- and heterostructures of van der Waals materials. Their unique structure corresponding to non-covalently stacked atomically thin layers allows for the study of original structural configurations, down to one-atom-thin films free of interface defect. The generation and relaxation of coherent optical phonons, as well as propagative and resonant breathing acoustic phonons, are comprehensively discussed. This approach opens new avenues for the in situ characterization of these novel materials, the observation and modulation of exotic phenomena, and advances in the field of acoustics microscopy.

Mechanical reinforcement of polymer colloidal crystals by supercritical fluids

Colloidal crystals realized by self-assembled polymer nanoparticles have prominent attraction as a platform for various applications from assembling photonic and phononic crystals, acoustic metamaterials to coating applications. However, the fragility of these systems limits their application horizon. In this work the uniform mechanical reinforcement and tunability of 3D polystyrene colloidal crystals by means of cold soldering are reported. This structural strengthening is achieved by high pressure gas (N₂ or Ar) plasticization at temperatures well below the glass transition. Brillouin light scattering is employed to monitor in-situ the mechanical vibrations of the crystal and thereby determine preferential pressure, temperature and time ranges for soldering, i.e. formation of physical bonding among the nanoparticles while maintaining the shape and translational order. This low-cost method is potentially useful for fabrication and tuning of durable devices including applications in photonics, phononics, acoustic metamaterials, optomechanics, surface coatings and nanolithography.
