Stable Yellow Light-Emitting Devices Based on Ternary Copper Halides with Broadband Emissive Self-Trapped Excitons

Efficient tunable white emission and multiple reversible photoluminescence switching in organic Tin(IV) chlorides via regulating the host lattice environment of antimony ions for multifunctional applications

The host lattice environments of Sb3+ has a great influence on its photophysical properties. Here, we synthesized three zero-dimensional organic metal halides of (TPA)2SbCl5 (1), Sb3+-doped (TPA)SnCl5(H2O)·2H2O (Sb3+-2), and Sb3+-doped (TPA)2SnCl6 (Sb3+-3). Compared with the intense orange emission of 1, Sb3+-3 has smaller lattice distortion, thus effectively suppressing the exciton transformation from singlet to triplet self-trapped exciton (STE) states, which makes Sb3+-3 has stronger singlet STE emission and further bring a white emission with a photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of 93.4%. Conversely, the non-emission can be observed in Sb3+-2 even though it has a similar [SbCl5]2- structure to 1, which should be due to its indirect bandgap characteristics and the effective non-radiative relaxation caused by H2O in the lattice. Interestingly, the non-emission of Sb3+-2 can convert into the bright emission of Sb3+-3 under TPACl DMF solution treatment. Meanwhile, the white emission under 315 nm excitation of Sb3+-3 can change into orange emission upon 365 nm irradiation, and the luminescence can be further quenched by the treatment of HCl. Therefore, a triple-mode reversible luminescence switch of off-onI-onII-off can be achieved. Finally, we demonstrated the applications of Sb3+-doped compounds in single-component white light illumination, latent fingerprint detection, fluorescent anti-counterfeiting, and information encryption.

Synthesis of Cs3Cu2I5 Nanocrystals in a Continuous Flow System

Achieving the goal of generating all of the world's energy via renewable sources and significantly reducing the energy usage will require the development of novel, abundant, nontoxic energy conversion materials. Here, a cost-efficient and scalable continuous flow synthesis of Cs3Cu2I5 nanocrystals is developed as a basis for the rapid advancement of novel nanomaterials. Ideal precursor solutions are obtained through a novel batch synthesis, whose product served as a benchmark for the subsequent flow synthesis. Realizing this setup enabled a reproducible fabrication of Cs3Cu2I5 nanocrystals. The effect of volumetric flow rate and temperature on the final product's morphology and optical properties are determined, obtaining 21% quantum yield with the optimal configuration. Consequently, the size and morphology of the nanocrystals can be tuned with far more precision and in a much broader range than previously achievable. The flow setup is readily applicable to other relevant nanomaterials. It should enable a rapid determination of a material's potential and subsequently optimize its desired properties for renewable energy generation or efficient optoelectronics.

Efficient Large-Area (81 cm2) Ternary Copper Halides Light-Emitting Diodes with External Quantum Efficiency Exceeding 13% via Host-Guest Strategy

Ternary copper (Cu) halides are promising candidates for replacing toxic lead halides in the field of perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) toward practical applications. However, the electroluminescent performance of Cu halide-based LEDs remains a great challenge due to the presence of serious nonradiative recombination and inefficient charge transport in Cu halide emitters. Here, the rational design of host-guest [dppb]2Cu2I2 (dppb denotes 1,2-bis[diphenylphosphino]benzene) emitters and its utility in fabricating efficient Cu halide-based green LEDs that show a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 13.39% are reported. The host-guest [dppb]2Cu2I2 emitters with mCP (1,3-bis(N-carbazolyl)benzene) host demonstrate a significant improvement of carrier radiative recombination efficiency, with the photoluminescence quantum yield increased by nearly ten times, which is rooted in the efficient energy transfer and type-I energy level alignment between [dppb]2Cu2I2 and mCP. Moreover, the charge-transporting mCP host can raise the carrier mobility of [dppb]2Cu2I2 films, thereby enhancing the charge transport and recombination. More importantly, this strategy enables a large-area prototype LED with a record-breaking area up to 81 cm2, along with a decent EQE of 10.02% and uniform luminance. It is believed these results represent an encouraging stepping stone to bring Cu halide-based LEDs from the laboratory toward commercial lighting and display panels.

Nonlinear Optical Properties of Cs2AgIn1-xBixCl6 Single Crystals

Lead-free double perovskites offer enhanced stability and lower toxicity compared to their lead-based counterparts. Dual B-site cations can introduce elemental and structural diversity into double perovskite materials, enabling fine-tuning of the optical properties. However, the study of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of lead-free double perovskites is still nascent, hindering their relevant potential applications. Based on this, this work synthesizes a series of Cs2AgIn1-xBixCl6 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.75, 1) single crystals, with the aim to explore the impact of composition on their NLO properties. Interestingly, Cs2AgInCl6 shows surface defect-induced second harmonic generation. With increasing Bi3+ concentration, the multiphoton absorption coefficients of Cs2AgIn1-xBixCl6 single crystals increase as a result of increasing state density. This work is helpful to understand well the NLO properties of lead-free double perovskites, laying a foundation for the development of related applications.

Efficient Deep-Blue Light-Emitting Diodes from Highly Luminescent Eu2+-Doped Alkali Metal Halide Nanocrystals via Lattice Field Modulation

Lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are promising for fabricating deep-blue (<460 nm) light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but their development is plagued by low electroluminescent performance and lead toxicity. Herein, the synthesis of 12 kinds of highly luminescent and eco-friendly deep-blue europium (Eu2+)-doped alkali-metal halides (AX:Eu2+; A = Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+; X = Cl-, Br-, I-) NCs is reported. Through adjustment of the coordination environment, efficient deep-blue emission from Eu-5d → Eu-4f transitions is realized. The representative CsBr:Eu2+ NCs exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 91.1% at 441 nm with a color coordinate at (0.158, 0.023) matching with the Rec. 2020 blue specification. Electrically driven deep-blue LEDs from CsBr:Eu2+ NCs are demonstrated, achieving a record external quantum efficiency of 3.15% and half-lifetime of ∼1 h, surpassing the reported metal-halide deep-blue NCs-based LEDs. Importantly, large-area LEDs with an emitting area of 12.25 cm2 are realized with uniform emission, representing a milestone toward commercial display applications.

Enhancing the Performance of 2D Tin-Based Pure Red Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes through the Synergistic Effect of Natural Antioxidants and Cyclic Molecular Additives

Tin (Sn)-based perovskites are being investigated in many optoelectronic applications given their similar valence electron configuration to that of lead-based perovskites and the potential environmental hazards of lead-based perovskites. However, the formation of high-quality Sn-based perovskite films faces several challenges, mainly due to the easy oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+ and the fast crystallization rate. Here, to develop an environmentally friendly process for Sn-based perovskite fabrication, a series of natural antioxidants are studied as additives and ascorbic acid (VitC) is found to have a superior ability to inhibit the oxidation problem. A common cyclic molecule, 18-Crown-6, is further added as a second additive, which synergizes with VitC to significantly reduce the nonradiative recombination pathways in the PEA2SnI4 film. This synergistic effect greatly improves the performance of 2D red Sn-based PeLED, with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.87% (≈9 times that of the pristine device), a purer color, and better bias stability. This work demonstrates the potential of the dual-additive approach in enhancing the performance of 2D Sn-based PeLEDs, while the use of these environmentally friendly additives contributes to their future sustainability.

Spectrally Tunable Lead-Free Perovskite Rb2ZrCl6:Te for Information Encryption and X-ray Imaging

A series of lead-free Rb2ZrCl6:xTe4+ (x = 0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0%, 5.0%, 10.0%) perovskite materials were synthesized through a hydrothermal method in this work. The substitution of Te4+ for Zr in Rb2ZrCl6 was investigated to examine the effect of Te4+ doping on the spectral properties of Rb2ZrCl6 and its potential applications. The incorporation of Te4+ induced yellow emission of triplet self-trapped emission (STE). Different luminescence wavelengths were regulated by Te4+ concentration and excitation wavelength, and under a low concentration of Te4+ doping (x ≤ 0.1%), different types of host STE emission and Te4+ triplet state emission could be achieved through various excitation energies. These luminescent properties made it suitable for applications in information encryption. When Te4+ was doped at high concentrations (x ≥ 1%), yellow triplet state emission of Te4+ predominated, resulting in intense yellow emission, which stemmed from strong exciton binding energy and intense electron-phonon coupling. In addition, a Rb2ZrCl6:2%Te4+@RTV scintillating film was fabricated and a spatial resolution of 3.7 lp/mm was achieved, demonstrating the potential applications of Rb2ZrCl6:xTe4+ in nondestructive detection and bioimaging.

Crown-Assisted CsCu2I3 Growth and Trap Passivation for Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Copper (Cu)-based perovskites are promising for lead-free perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, it remains a significant challenge to achieve high performance devices due to the nonradiative loss caused by the disordered crystallization and lack of passivation. Crown ethers are known to form host-guest complexes by the interaction between C-O-C groups and certain cations, and 18-crown-6 (18C6) with an appropriate complementary size can interact with Cs+ and Cu+ cations. Herein, we studied the interaction between CsCu2I3 and two crowns with the same cyclic size, 18C6 and dibenzo-18-crown-6 (D18C6). Particularly, D18C6 can reduce the nonradiative recombination rate of CsCu2I3 film by passivating the defects and optimizing the film morphology effectively. The room mean square (RMS) decreased from 5.06 to 2.95 nm, and the PLQY was promoted from 4.71% to 19.9%. Besides, D18C6 can also decrease the barrier of hole injection. The PeLEDs based on D18C6-modified CsCu2I3 realized noticeable improvement with a maximum luminance and EQE of 583 cd/m2 and 0.662%, respectively.

Efficient and bright broadband electroluminescence based on environment-friendly metal halide nanoclusters

Broadband electroluminescence based on environment-friendly emitters is promising for healthy lighting yet remains an unprecedented challenge to progress. The copper halide-based emitters are competitive candidates for broadband emission, but their high-performance electroluminescence shows inadequate broad emission bandwidth of less than 90 nm. Here, we demonstrate efficient ultra-broadband electroluminescence from a copper halide (CuI) nanocluster single emitter prepared by a one-step solution synthesis-deposition process, through dedicated design of ligands and subtle selection of solvents. The CuI nanocluster exhibits high rigidity in the excitation state as well as dual-emissive modes of phosphorescence and temperature-activated delayed fluorescence, enabling the uniform cluster-composed film to show excellent stability and high photoluminescent efficiency. In consequence, ultra-broadband light-emitting diodes (LEDs) present nearly identical performance in an inert or air atmosphere without encapsulation and outstanding high-temperature operation performance, reaching an emission full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ~120 nm, a peak external quantum efficiency of 13%, a record maximum luminance of ~50,000 cd m-2, and an operating half-lifetime of 137 h at 100 cd m-2. The results highlight the potential of copper halide nanoclusters for next-generation healthy lighting.

Highly stable mixed-phase Cs-Cu-I films with tunable optoelectronic properties for UVB photodetector applications

Ultraviolet (UV) photodetector plays an important role in military, civilian and people's daily life, and is an indispensable part of spectral detection. However, photodetectors target at the UVB region (280-320 nm) are rarely reported, and the devices detected by medium-wave UV light generally have problems such as low detection rate, low sensitivity, and poor stability, which are difficult to meet the market application needs. Herein, Cs-Cu-I films with mixed-phase have been prepared by vacuum thermal evaporation. By adjusting the proportion of evaporation sources (CsI and CuI), the optical bandgaps of mixed-phase Cs-Cu-I films can be tuned between 3.7 eV and 4.1 eV. This absorption cut-off edge is exactly at both ends of the UVB band, which indicating its potential application in the field of UVB detection. Finally, the photodetectors based on Cs-Cu-I/n-Si heterojunction are fabricated. The photodetector shows good spectral selectivity for UVB band, and has a photoresponsivity of 22 mA/W, a specific detectivity of 1.83*1011 Jones, an EQE over 8.7% and an on/off ratio above 20.

Alkylammonium Halides for Phase Regulation and Luminescence Modulation of Cesium Copper Iodide Nanocrystals for Light-Emitting Diodes

All-inorganic cesium copper halide nanocrystals have attracted extensive attention due to their cost-effectiveness, low toxicity, and rich luminescence properties. However, controlling the synthesis of these nanocrystals to achieve a precise composition and high luminous efficiency remains a challenge that limits their future application. Herein, we report the effect of oleylammonium iodide on the synthesis of copper halide nanocrystals to control the composition and phase and modulate their photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs). For CsCu2I3, the PL peak is centered at 560 nm with a PLQY of 47.3%, while the PL peak of Cs3Cu2I5 is located at 440 nm with an unprecedently high PLQY of 95.3%. Furthermore, the intermediate-state CsCu2I3/Cs3Cu2I5 heterostructure shows white light emission with a PLQY of 66.4%, chromaticity coordinates of (0.3176, 0.3306), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 90, and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6234 K, indicating that it is promising for single-component white-light-emitting applications. The nanocrystals reported in this study have excellent luminescence properties, low toxicity, and superior stability, so they are more suitable for future light-emitting applications.

Deep-blue narrow-band emissive cesium europium bromide perovskite nanocrystals with record high emission efficiency for wide-color-gamut backlight displays

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are highly promising for backlighting display applications due to their high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and wide color gamut values. However, the practical applications of blue emitters are limited due to the toxicity of lead, unstable structure, and unsatisfactory PLQY. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of divalent europium-based perovskite CsEuBr3 NCs using a modified hot injection method. By optimizing the reaction conditions, the CsEuBr3 NCs display a deep-blue emission at 443 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 28.5 nm, a color purity of 99.61%, and a record high PLQY of 93.51% for deep-blue narrow-band emissive lead-free perovskite NCs as far as we know. The emission mechanism of CsEuBr3 NCs is proved through first-principles calculations and spectral analysis. Notably, the CsEuBr3 NCs exhibit remarkable stability when exposed to high temperature, UV irradiation, and long-term sealed storage. The incorporation of CsEuBr3 NCs into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) serving as a converter is utilized for white light-emitting devices (WLEDs). WLEDs for backlight displays achieves a wide color gamut of 127.1% of the National Television System Committee standard (NTSC), 94.9% coverage of the ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020 (Rec.2020), and their half-lifetime is up to 1677 h, providing a promising pathway for highly efficient, environment-friendly and practical liquid crystal display backlights.

Air-Stable Self-Driven UV Photodetectors on Controllable Lead-Free CsCu2I3 Microwire Arrays

The rapid evolution of the Internet of Things has engendered increased requirements for low-cost, self-powered UV photodetectors. Herein, high-performance self-driven UV photodetectors are fabricated by designing asymmetric metal-semiconductor-metal structures on the high-quality large-area CsCu2I3 microwire arrays. The asymmetrical depletion region doubles the photocurrent and response speed compared to the symmetric structure device, leading to a high responsivity of 233 mA/W to 355 nm radiation. Notably, at 0 V bias, the asymmetric device produces an open-circuit voltage of 356 mV and drives to a short-circuit current of 372 pA; meanwhile, the switch ratio (Iph/Idark) reaches up to 103, indicating its excellent potential for detecting weak light. Furthermore, the device maintains stable responses throughout 10000 UV-light switch cycles, with negligible degradation even after 90-day storage in air. Our work establishes that CsCu2I3 is a good candidate for self-powered UV detection and thoroughly demonstrates its potential as a passive device.

A zero-dimensional hybrid copper(I) bromide single crystal with highly efficient green emission

Lead-free metal halides are considered as alternatives to lead-based perovskites due to their low toxicity, rich structural diversity, and high luminescence properties. We report millimeter-sized single crystals of a new zero-dimensional (0D) copper(I)-based hybrid material, (AEP)2Cu2Br6·2Br·2H2O (AEP = C6H18N33+), which exhibits bright broadband green photoluminescence (PL) at 510 nm with a Stokes shift of 220 nm and a PL lifetime of 121.1 μs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental studies reveal that the green light can be attributed to self-trapping exciton (STE) emission. It is worth mentioning that this crystal has a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 90.5%, which is higher than most copper halides.

Unraveling the Origin of an Unusual Shift in the Electroluminescence of 1D CsCu2I3 Light-Emitting Diodes

Lead-free low-dimensional copper-based metal halides are promising luminescent materials for broadband LEDs owing to their broad self-trapped exciton (STE) emission. However, recently, in 1D CsCu2I3, a discrepancy between their electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) has been observed. As a result, the overall output color from LEDs is significantly different than the anticipated emission. To unveil the origin of this discrepancy, here, we provide comprehensive analyses and show that the shift in the EL is caused neither by any structural/optical interactions between CsCu2I3 and electron transport layers (ETL) nor by the degradation of 1D CsCu2I3. Instead, it depends on the carrier imbalance on CsCu2I3, mainly due to the difference in the electron mobility of the ETLs and the electron density on the CsCu2I3 layer. By varying the ETLs, different colored 1D CsCu2I3 LEDs with peaks at 556, 590, and 647 nm are fabricated, and a maximum luminance of over 2000 cd/m2 is achieved for a 556 nm LED. Further, by limiting the electron mobility and injection to 1D CsCu2I3 using an insulating LiF layer at the CsCu2I3/ETL interface, more red-shifted LEDs are achieved confirming the critical role of electron density on the EL characteristics of 1D CsCu2I3.

Highly Sensitive H2S Gas Sensor Based on a Lead-Free CsCu2I3 Perovskite Film at Room Temperature

Recently, there have been reports of lead halide perovskite-based sensors demonstrating their potential for gas sensing applications. However, the toxicity of lead and the instability of lead-based perovskites have limited their applications. This study addressed this issue by developing a H2S gas sensor based on a lead-free CsCu2I3 film prepared using a one-step CVD method. The sensor demonstrated excellent sensing properties, including a high response and selectivity toward H2S, even at low concentrations (0.2 ppm) at room temperature. Furthermore, a reasonable sensing mechanism was proposed. It is suggested that the sensing mechanism sheds light on the role of defects in perovskite materials, the impact of H2S as an electron donor, and the occurrence of reversible chemical reactions. These findings suggest that lead-free CsCu2I3 has great potential in the field of H2S gas sensing.

Broadband Emission Origin in Metal Halide Perovskites: Are Self-Trapped Excitons or Ions?

It has always been a goal to realize high efficiency and broadband emission in single-component materials. The appearance of metal halide perovskites makes it possible. Their soft lattice characteristics and significant electron-phonon coupling synergistically generate self-trapped excitons (STEs), contributing to a broadband emission with a large Stokes shift. Meanwhile, their structural/compositional diversity provides suitable active sites and coordination environments for doping of ns2 ions, allowing 3 Pn ( n =0,1,2) →1 S0 transitions toward broadband emission. The ns2 ions emission is phenomenologically similar to that of STE emission, hindering in-depth understanding of their emission origin, and leading to failure to meet the design requirements for practical applications. In this scenario, herein, the fundamentals and development of such two emission mechanisms are summarized to establish a clear and comprehensive understanding of the broadband emission phenomenon, which may pave the way to an ideal customization of broadband-emission metal halide perovskites.

Cluster-Centered Excited-State-Induced Bright Low-Energy Emissive Hybrid Copper Iodide Constructing Stable White LEDs

Herein, we successfully synthesized a stable copper iodide hybrid with a 0D structure, (C20H20P)2Cu2I4, in which [Cu2I4]2- dimers with a short Cu-Cu distance (2.64 Å) are isolated and surrounded by [C20H20P]+ organic cations. Bright broadband yellow emission (576 nm) featuring a wide excitation range from 240 to 450 nm was achieved, along with a large Stokes shift (211 nm), long-lived lifetime (1.99 μs), and zero self-absorption. The results combined with crystal structure, spectroscopy analysis, and theoretical studies reveal that a cluster-centered excited state is responsible for this yellow emission. Importantly, the structure of (C20H20P)2Cu2I4 remains unchanged even after soaking in water for 30 days or heating at 80 °C for 240 h due to the intermolecular interaction. Furthermore, a stable white LED showing a naturally correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6573 K and CIE color coordinate of (0.31, 0.37) was also demonstrated. This work demonstrates efficient light emitters based on lead-free and stable metal halides for lighting, providing an important reference for the development of stable, high-performance metal halide phosphors.

Recent Advances and Opportunities of Eco-Friendly Ternary Copper Halides: A New Superstar in Optoelectronic Applications

Recently, the newly-emerging lead-free metal-halide materials with less toxicity and superior optoelectronic properties have received wide attention as the safer and potentially more robust alternatives to lead-based perovskite counterparts. Among them, ternary copper halides (TCHs) have become a vital group due to their unique features, including abundant structural diversity, ease of synthesis, unprecedented optoelectronic properties, high abundance, and low cost. Although the recent efforts in this field have made certain progresses, some scientific and technological issues still remain unresolved. Herein, a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of recent progress on the fundamental characteristics of TCH materials and their versatile applications is presented, which contains topics such as: i) crystal and electronic structure features and synthesis strategies; ii) mechanisms of self-trapped excitons, luminescence regulation, and environmental stability; and iii) their burgeoning optoelectronic devices of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), electroluminescent LEDs, anti-counterfeiting, X-ray scintillators, photodetectors, sensors, and memristors. Finally, the current challenges together with future perspectives on the development of TCH materials and applications are also critically described, which is considered to be critical for accelerating the commercialization of these rapidly evolving technologies.

Regulating Exciton De-Trapping of Te4+ -Doped Zero-Dimensional Scandium-Halide Perovskite for Fluorescence Thermometry with Record High Time-Resolved Thermal Sensitivity

Fluorescence thermometry has been propelled to the forefront of scientific attention due to its high spatial resolution and remote non-invasive detection. However, recent generations of thermometers still suffer from limited thermal sensitivity (Sr ) below 10% change per Kelvin. Herein, this work presents an ideal temperature-responsive fluorescence material through Te4+ -doped 0D Cs2 ScCl5 ·H2 O, in which isolated polyhedrons endow highly localized electronic structures, and the strong electron-phonon coupling facilitates the formation of self-trapped excitons (STEs). With rising temperature, the dramatic asymmetric expansion of the soft lattice induces increased defects, strong exciton-phonon coupling, and low thermal activation energy, which evokes a rapid de-trapping process of STEs, enabling several orders of magnitude changes in the fluorescence lifetime over a narrow temperature range. After regulating the de-trapping process with different Te4+ doping, a record-high Sr (27.36% K-1 ) of fluorescence lifetime-based detection is achieved at 325 K. The robust stability against multiple heating/cooling cycles and long-term measurements enables a low temperature uncertainty of 0.067 K. Further, the developed thermometers are demonstrated for the remote local monitoring of operating temperature on internal electronic components. It is believed that this work constitutes a solid step towards building the next generation of ultrasensitive thermometers based on low-dimensional metal halides.

Tautomeric mixture coordination enables efficient lead-free perovskite LEDs

Lead halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have demonstrated remarkable optoelectronic performance1-3. However, there are potential toxicity issues with lead4,5 and removing lead from the best-performing PeLEDs-without compromising their high external quantum efficiencies-remains a challenge. Here we report a tautomeric-mixture-coordination-induced electron localization strategy to stabilize the lead-free tin perovskite TEA2SnI4 (TEAI is 2-thiopheneethylammonium iodide) by incorporating cyanuric acid. We demonstrate that a crucial function of the coordination is to amplify the electronic effects, even for those Sn atoms that aren't strongly bonded with cyanuric acid owing to the formation of hydrogen-bonded tautomeric dimer and trimer superstructures on the perovskite surface. This electron localization weakens adverse effects from Anderson localization and improves ordering in the crystal structure of TEA2SnI4. These factors result in a two-orders-of-magnitude reduction in the non-radiative recombination capture coefficient and an approximately twofold enhancement in the exciton binding energy. Our lead-free PeLED has an external quantum efficiency of up to 20.29%, representing a performance comparable to that of state-of-the-art lead-containing PeLEDs6-12. We anticipate that these findings will provide insights into the stabilization of Sn(II) perovskites and further the development of lead-free perovskite applications.

Lead-Free Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals for Light-Emitting Diodes

Lead-based halide perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) have demonstrated remarkable potential for use in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This is because of their high photoluminescence quantum yield, defect tolerance, tunable emission wavelength, color purity, and high device efficiency. However, the environmental toxicity of Pb has impeded their commercial viability owing to the restriction of hazardous substances directive. Therefore, Pb-free PeNCs have emerged as a promising solution for the development of eco-friendly LEDs. This review article presents a detailed analysis of the various compositions of Pb-free PeNCs, including tin-, bismuth-, antimony-, and copper-based perovskites and double perovskites, focusing on their stability, optoelectronic properties, and device performance in LEDs. Furthermore, we address the challenges encountered in using Pb-free PeNC-LEDs and discuss the prospects and potential of these Pb-free PeNCs as sustainable alternatives to lead-based PeLEDs. In this review, we aim to shed light on the current state of Pb-free PeNC LEDs and highlight their significance in driving the development of eco-friendly LED technologies.

Enhanced Charge Balance for Efficient Electroluminescence from Cesium Copper Halides

Cesium copper halides have the advantages of high photoluminescence quantum efficiency and good stability, making them attractive for replacing toxic lead halides in the field of perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, due to their shallow conduction band and the lack of electron transport layers compatible with it, it remains a great challenge to achieve charge balance in LED devices. This drawback manifests as the accumulation of holes at the interface between the emitting layer and electron transport layer, resulting in nonradiative recombination. Here, we demonstrate an effective approach to address this issue by suppressing hole injection, which is realized through modification of the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) layer with polyethylenimine. This leads to cesium-copper-halide LEDs with a high external quantum efficiency of 5.6%, representing an advance in device architecture for efficient electroluminescence from cesium copper halides.

Harnessing the potential of CsPbBr3-based perovskite solar cells using efficient charge transport materials and global optimization

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have become a possible alternative to traditional photovoltaic devices for their high performance, low cost, and ease of fabrication. Here in this study, the SCAPS-1D simulator numerically simulates and optimizes CsPbBr₃-based PSCs under the optimum illumination situation. We explore the impact of different back metal contacts (BMCs), including Cu, Ag, Fe, C, Au, W, Pt, Se, Ni, and Pd combined with the TiO₂ electron transport layer (ETL) and CFTS hole transport layer (HTL), on the performance of the devices. After optimization, the ITO/TiO₂/CsPbBr₃/CFTS/Ni structure showed a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE or η) of 13.86%, with Ni as a more cost-effective alternative to Au. After the optimization of the BMC the rest of the investigation is conducted both with and without HTL mode. We investigate the impact of changing the thickness and the comparison with acceptor and defect densities (with and without HTL) of the CsPbBr₃ perovskite absorber layer on the PSC performance. Finally, we optimized the thickness, charge carrier densities, and defect densities of the absorber, ETL, and HTL, along with the interfacial defect densities at HTL/absorber and absorber/ETL interfaces to improve the PCE of the device; and the effect of variation of these parameters is also investigated both with and without HTL connected. The final optimized configuration achieved a V_OC of 0.87 V, J_SC of 27.57 mA cm^-2, FF of 85.93%, and PCE of 20.73%. To further investigate the performance of the optimized device, we explore the impact of the temperature, shunt resistance, series resistance, capacitance, generation rate, recombination rate, Mott-Schottky, JV, and QE features of both with and without HTL connected. The optimized device offers the best thermal stability at a temperature of 300 K. Our study highlights the potential of CsPbBr₃-based PSCs and provides valuable insights for their optimization and future development.

Zero-Dimensional Broadband Yellow Light Emitter (TMS)3Cu2I5 for Latent Fingerprint Detection and Solid-State Lighting

We report a new hybrid organic-inorganic Cu(I) halide, (TMS)₃Cu₂I₅ (TMS = trimethylsulfonium), which demonstrates high efficiency and stable yellow light emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) over 25%. The zero-dimensional crystal structure of the compound is comprised of isolated face-sharing photoactive [Cu₂I₅]^3- tetrahedral dimers surrounded by TMS⁺ cations. This promotes strong quantum confinement and electron-phonon coupling, leading to a highly efficient emission from self-trapped excitons. The hybrid structure ensures prolonged stability and nonblue emission compared to unstable blue emission from all-inorganic copper(I) halides. Substitution of Cu with Ag leads to (TMS)AgI₂, which has a one-dimensional chain structure made of edge-sharing tetrahedra, with weak light emission properties. Improved stability and highly efficient yellow emission of (TMS)₃Cu₂I₅ make it a candidate for practical applications. This has been demonstrated through utilization of (TMS)₃Cu₂I₅ in white light-emitting diode with a high Color Rendering Index value of 82 and its use as a new luminescent agent for visualization of in-depth latent fingerprint features. This work illuminates a new direction in designing multifunctional nontoxic hybrid metal halides.

Two-Dimensional Cs2 AgInx Bi1- x Cl6 Alloyed Double Perovskite Nanoplatelets for Solution-Processed Light-Emitting Diodes

Lead-free double perovskites have emerged as a promising class of materials with potential to be integrated into a wide range of optical and optoelectronic applications. Herein, the first synthesis of 2D Cs₂ AgIn_x Bi_{1- x} Cl₆ (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) alloyed double perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) with well controlled morphology and composition is demonstrated. The obtained NPLs show unique optical properties with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield of 40.1%. Both temperature dependent spectroscopic studies and density functional theory calculation results reveal that the morphological dimension reduction and In-Bi alloying effect together boost the radiative pathway of the self-trapped excitons of the alloyed double perovskite NPLs. Moreover, the NPLs exhibit good stability under ambient conditions and against polar solvents, which is ideal for all solution-processing of the materials in low-cost device manufacturing. The first solution-processed light-emitting diodes is demonstrated using the Cs₂ AgIn_0.9 Bi_0.1 Cl₆ alloyed double perovskite NPLs as the sole emitting component, showing luminance maximum of 58 cd m^-2 and peak current efficiency of 0.013 cd A^-1 . This study sheds light on morphological control and composition-property relationships of double perovskite nanocrystals, paving the way toward ultimate utilizations of lead-free perovskite materials in diverse sets of real-life applications.

Chirality in luminescent Cs3Cu2Br5 microcrystals produced via ligand-assisted reprecipitation

Herein we report new chiral luminescent Cs₃Cu₂Br₅ needle-like microcrystals and the analysis of their optical properties and the effect of the ligand structure on the transfer of chirality.

A and B sites dual substitution by Na+ and Cu2+ co-doping in CsPbBr3 quantum dots to achieve bright and stable blue light emitting diodes

Light-emitting perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) are extensively investigated owing to their evident merits. However, it is still a challenge to adjust their intrinsic emissions and enhance their thermal stability to achieve full-color highly emissive QD-based light-emitting diodes (QLEDs), especially blue QLEDs. Herein, we demonstrate an effective strategy to fundamentally stabilize the crystal structure of CsPbBr₃ QDs by codoping Na⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions, which are designed to substitute Cs⁺ (A sites) and Pb²⁺ (B sites), respectively. It is found out that the codoping metal ions have significantly improved the thermal stability and the optical properties of the QDs. 40% of the emission intensity can be remained after 8 thermal cycles (20-120 °C) for CsPbBr₃: Na⁺/Cu²⁺ QDs, whilst less than 10% is maintained for undoped CsPbBr₃ QDs. Accordingly, stable blue QLEDs are packed by CsPbBr₃: Na⁺/Cu²⁺ QDs. Strong electroluminescence with the maximum luminance of 7161 cd m^-2 and low turn-on voltage of 2.4 V are realized. The CIE coordinates are tuned from green (0.10, 0.74) to blue (0.17, 0.25) via Na⁺ and Cu²⁺ codoping. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE_max) is obtained as 4.52% for PeLEDs based on codoped QDs. The proposed metal ions A and B sites dual substitution strategy guarantees PeQDs as an extremely promising prospect in potential applications as high-resolution displays and high-quality lightings.

Stabilizing FASnI3-based perovskite light-emitting diodes with crystallization control

The toxicity of lead presents a critical challenge for the application of perovskite optoelectronics. Lead-free perovskite solar cells were achieved with formamidinium tin iodide (FASnI₃) perovskites, exhibiting decent power-conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 14%, with >98% of the initial PCE retained after 3000 h of storage. However, when employed in light-emitting applications, FASnI₃-based perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) show limited stability, with T₅₀ lifetimes of up to 0.25 h at 10 mA cm^-2. Here, we improve the stability of FASnI₃-based PeLEDs through the inclusion of a two-dimensional precursor phenethylamine iodide (PEAI), allowing controlled crystallization of the mixed-dimensional perovskite emitters. The density of defects is found to be reduced, accompanied by the suppression of oxidation from Sn²⁺ to Sn⁴⁺. Using an optimized perovskite composition, we achieve an EQE of 1.5% (a ∼10-fold improvement over the control devices), a maximum radiance of 145 W sr^-1 m^-2, and a record-long T₅₀ lifetime of 10.3 h at 100 mA cm^-2 for FASnI₃-based PeLEDs. Our results illuminate an alternative path toward lead-free PeLED applications.

Synthesis of Thermally Stable and Highly Luminescent Cs5 Cu3 Cl6 I2 Nanocrystals with Nonlinear Optical Response

Low-dimensional Cu(I)-based metal halide materials are gaining attention due to their low toxicity, high stability and unique luminescence mechanism, which is mediated by self-trapped excitons (STEs). Among them, Cs₅ Cu₃ Cl₆ I₂ , which emits blue light, is a promising candidate for applications as a next-generation blue-emitting material. In this article, an optimized colloidal process to synthesize uniform Cs₅ Cu₃ Cl₆ I₂ nanocrystals (NCs) with a superior quantum yield (QY) is proposed. In addition, precise control of the synthesis parameters, enabling anisotropic growth and emission wavelength shifting is demonstrated. The synthesized Cs₅ Cu₃ Cl₆ I₂ NCs have an excellent photoluminescence (PL) retention rate, even at high temperature, and exhibit high stability over multiple heating-cooling cycles under ambient conditions. Moreover, under 850-nm femtosecond laser irradiation, the NCs exhibit three-photon absorption (3PA)-induced PL, highlighting the possibility of utilizing their nonlinear optical properties. Such thermally stable and highly luminescent Cs₅ Cu₃ Cl₆ I₂ NCs with nonlinear optical properties overcome the limitations of conventional blue-emitting nanomaterials. These findings provide insights into the mechanism of the colloidal synthesis of Cs₅ Cu₃ Cl₆ I₂ NCs and a foundation for further research.

Large-Scale, Uniform-Patterned CsCu2 I3 Films for Flexible Solar-Blind Photodetectors Array with Ultraweak Light Sensing

Cesium copper halide perovskite is one of the promising materials for solar-blind light detection. However, most of the cesium copper halide perovskite-based photodetectors (PDs) are focused on ultraviolet A detection and realized on the rigid substrate in the single device configuration. Here, a flexible solar-blind PDs array (10 × 10 pixels) based on the CsCu₂ I₃ film patterns for ultraweak light sensing and light distribution imaging is reported. Large-scale CsCu₂ I₃ film arrays are synthesized with various shapes and uniform dimensions through a simple vacuum-heating-assisted solution method. Benefiting from excellent air stability and superior resistance to the photodegrading of the CsCu₂ I₃ film, the array device exhibits long-term stable photoswitching behavior for 8 h and ultralow light detection capability to resolve the light intensity of 6.1 nW cm^-2 with a high responsivity of 62 A W^-1 , and the array device can acquire clear images of "G", "X", and "U" showing the input light distribution. Moreover, the flame detection and warning system based on a curved solar-blind PDs array is demonstrated, which can be used for multi-flame monitoring and locating. These results can encourage potential applications of the CsCu₂ I₃ film-based PDs array in the field of optical communication and environment monitoring.

Anisotropic Growth of Centimeter-Size CsCu2 I3 Single Crystals with Ultra-Low Trap Density for Aspect-Ratio-Dependent Photodetectors

Low-dimensional ternary copper iodide metal halide with strong quantum confinement effects has made great progress in optoelectronic fields. However, efficient regulation of anisotropic growth of metal halides single crystal still remains a great challenge. Herein, 2 cm size CsCu₂ I₃ single crystals with tunable aspect ratio and the trap states (n_trap ) as low as 5.38 × 10⁹  cm^-3 are fabricated by optimized anti-solvent vapor-assisted method, in which the growth cycle is shortened by half. Evidenced by real-time observation and the LaMer growth model, the rapid and anisotropic growth mechanism is ascribed to preferential 1D growth, promoted by high concentration and fast vapor rate. Furthermore, the aspect-ratio-dependent optoelectronic performance is observed, the on-off ratio for 2 cm CsCu₂ I₃ single crystal are enhanced 350 times compared with those of short and thick single crystal, which shows ultrahigh on-off ratio of 1570, D* of 1.34 × 10¹²  Jones, R_λ of 276.94 mA W^-1 , t _rise /t _decay of 0.37 and 1.08 ms, and EQE of 95.53%, which are clearly at very high level among lead-free perovskite-based photodetectors. This study not only provides a new strategy for overcoming anisotropic growth limitations of low-dimensional metal halides, but also paves a way for high-performance optoelectronic applications.

Citric acid tuned negative thermal quenching of all inorganic copper-based perovskites

Copper-based perovskites, with lower electronic dimensions and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY), which are non-toxic and thermally stable, have been reported since 2019 and have immediately attracted great attention. So far, only a few studies have researched the temperature-dependent photoluminescence properties, posing a challenge in ensuring the stability of the material. In this paper, the temperature-dependent photoluminescence properties have been investigated in detail, and a negative thermal quenching of all-inorganic CsCu₂I₃ perovskites has been studied. Moreover, the negative thermal quenching property can be tuned with the assistance of citric acid, which has not been reported before. The Huang-Rhys factors are calculated to be 46.32/38.31, which is higher than for many semiconductors and perovskites.

A Multifunctional "Halide-Equivalent" Anion Enabling Efficient CsPb(Br/I)3 Nanocrystals Pure-Red Light-Emitting Diodes with External Quantum Efficiency Exceeding 23

Pure-red perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) based on CsPb(Br/I)₃ nanocrystals (NCs) usually suffer from a compromise in emission efficiency and spectral stability on account of the surface halide vacancies-induced nonradiative recombination loss, halide phase segregation, and self-doping effect. Herein, a "halide-equivalent" anion of benzenesulfonate (BS^- ) is introduced into CsPb(Br/I)₃ NCs as multifunctional additive to simultaneously address the above challenging issues. Joint experiment-theory characterizations reveal that the BS^- can not only passivate the uncoordinated Pb²⁺ -related defects at the surface of NCs, but also increase the formation energy of halide vacancies. Moreover, because of the strong electron-withdrawing property of sulfonate group, electrons are expected to transfer from the CsPb(Br/I)₃ NC to BS^- for reducing the self-doping effect and altering the n-type behavior of CsPb(Br/I)₃ NCs to near ambipolarity. Eventually, synergistic boost in device performance is achieved for pure-red PeLEDs with CIE coordinates of (0.70, 0.30) and a champion external quantum efficiency of 23.5%, which is one of the best value among the ever-reported red PeLEDs approaching to the Rec. 2020 red primary color. Moreover, the BS^- -modified PeLED exhibits negligible wavelength shift under different operating voltages. This strategy paves an efficient way for improving the efficiency and stability of pure-red PeLEDs.

Advances in electrically driven light-emitting diodes based on lead-free metal halides

The emerging lead halide perovskites show great potential for their use as emitters in electrically driven light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with external quantum efficiency (EQE) over 25%. While the toxicity of lead and inferior device stability are the main obstacles for their commercialization, replacing Pb²⁺ with low- or non-toxic metal ions to form low- or zero-dimensional structures provides an alternative approach to effectively tackle these issues. Recently, luminescent lead-free metal halides have been increasingly developed toward eco-friendly and highly efficient electroluminescence. In this feature article, we give a brief overview of recent advances in luminescent lead-free metal halides and their applications in electrically driven LEDs. The challenges and prospects in this field are outlined at the end.

Ultraviolet photodetector based on RbCu2I3microwire

Copper-based halide perovskites have shown great potential in lighting and photodetection due to their excellent photoelectric properties, good stability and lead-free nature. However, as an important piece of copper-based perovskites, the synthesis and application of RbCu₂I₃have never been reported. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of high-quality RbCu₂I₃microwires (MWs) by a fast-cooling hot saturated solution method. The prepared MWs exhibit an orthorhombic structure with a smooth surface. Optical measurements show the RbCu₂I₃MWs have a sharp ultraviolet absorption edge with 3.63 eV optical band gap and ultra-large stokes shift (300 nm) in photoluminescence. The subsequent photodetector based on a single RbCu₂I₃MW shows excellent ultraviolet detection performance. Under the 340 nm illumination, the device shows a specific detectivity of 5.0 × 10⁹Jones and a responsivity of 380 mA·W^-1. The synthesis method and physical properties of RbCu₂I₃could be a guide to the future optoelectronic application of the new material.

Strong Antibonding I (p)-Cu (d) States Lead to Intrinsically Low Thermal Conductivity in CuBiI4

Chemical bonding present in crystalline solids has a significant impact on how heat moves through a lattice, and with the right chemical tuning, one can achieve extremely low thermal conductivity. The desire for intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity (κ_lat) has gained widespread attention in thermoelectrics, in refractories, and nowadays in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Here we have synthesized a high-quality crystalline ingot of cubic metal halide CuBiI₄ and explored its chemical bonding and thermal transport properties. It exhibits an intrinsically ultralow κ_lat of ∼0.34-0.28 W m^-1 K^-1 in the temperature range 4-423 K with an Umklapp crystalline peak of 1.82 W m^-1 K^-1 at 20 K, which is surprisingly lower than other copper-based halide or chalcogenide materials. The crystal orbital Hamilton population analysis shows that antibonding states generated just below the Fermi level (E_f), which arise from robust copper 3d and iodine 5p interactions, cause copper-iodide bond weakening, which leads to reduction of the elastic moduli and softens the lattice, finally to produce extremely low κ_lat in CuBiI₄. The chemical bonding hierarchy with mixed covalent and ionic interactions present in the complex crystal structure generates significant lattice anharmonicity and a low participation ratio in low-lying optical phonon modes originating mostly from localized copper-iodide bond vibrations. We have obtained experimental evidence of these low-lying modes by low-temperature specific heat capacity measurement as well as Raman spectroscopy. The presence of strong p-d antibonding interactions between copper and iodine leads to anharmonic soft crystal lattice which gives rise to low-energy localized optical phonon bands, suppressing the heat-carrying acoustic phonons to steer intrinsically ultralow κ_lat in CuBiI₄.

Combined DFT, SCAPS-1D, and wxAMPS frameworks for design optimization of efficient Cs2BiAgI6-based perovskite solar cells with different charge transport layers

In this study, combined DFT, SCAPS-1D, and wxAMPS frameworks are used to investigate the optimized designs of Cs2BiAgI6 double perovskite-based solar cells. First-principles calculations are employed to investigate the structural stability, optical responses, and electronic contribution of the constituent elements in Cs2BiAgI6 absorber material, where SCAPS-1D and wxAMPS simulators are used to scrutinize different configurations of Cs2BiAgI6 solar cells. Here, PCBM, ZnO, TiO2, C60, IGZO, SnO2, WS2, and CeO2 are used as ETL, and Cu2O, CuSCN, CuSbS2, NiO, P3HT, PEDOT:PSS, spiro-MeOTAD, CuI, CuO, V2O5, CBTS, CFTS are used as HTL, and Au is used as a back contact. About ninety-six combinations of Cs2BiAgI6-based solar cell structures are investigated, in which eight sets of solar cell structures are identified as the most efficient structures. Besides, holistic investigation on the effect of different factors such as the thickness of different layers, series and shunt resistances, temperature, capacitance, Mott-Schottky and generation-recombination rates, and J-V (current-voltage density) and QE (quantum efficiency) characteristics is performed. The results show CBTS as the best HTL for Cs2BiAgI6 with all eight ETLs used in this work, resulting in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.99%, 21.55%, 21.59%, 17.47%, 20.42%, 21.52%, 14.44%, 21.43% with PCBM, TiO2, ZnO, C60, IGZO, SnO2, CeO2, WS2, respectively. The proposed strategy may pave the way for further design optimization of lead-free double perovskite solar cells.

Light Emission of Self-Trapped Excitons in Inorganic Metal Halides for Optoelectronic Applications

Self-trapped excitons (STEs) have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their broadband emission, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and self-absorption-free properties, which enable a large range of optoelectronic applications such as lighting, displays, radiation detection, and special sensors. Unlike free excitons, the formation of STEs requires strong coupling between excited state excitons and the soft lattice in low electronic dimensional materials. The chemical and structural diversity of metal halides provides an ideal platform for developing efficient STE emission materials. Herein, an overview of recent progress on STE emission materials for optoelectronic applications is presented. The relationships between the fundamental emission mechanisms, chemical compositions, and device performances are systematically reviewed. On this basis, currently existing challenges and possible development opportunities in this field are presented.

Copper-based metal halides for X-ray and photodetection

Copper-based metal halides have become important materials in the field of X-ray and photodetection due to their excellent optical properties, good environmental stability and low toxicity. This review presents the progress of research on crystal structure/morphology, photophysics/optical properties and applications of copper-based metal halides. We also discuss the challenges of copper-based metal halides with a perspective of their future research directions.

Self-trapped excitons in soft semiconductors

Self-trapped excitons (STEs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their intriguing properties and potential optoelectronic applications. STEs are formed from the lattice distortion induced by the strong electron (exciton)-phonon coupling in soft semiconductors upon photoexcitation, which features in broadband photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra with a large Stokes shift. Recently, significant progress has been achieved in this field but many remain challenges that need to be solved, including the understanding of the underlying physical mechanism, tuning of the performance, and device applications. Along these lines, for the first time, systematic experimental characterizations and advanced theoretical calculations are presented in this review to shed light on the physical mechanism. The possibility of tuning the STEs through multiple degrees of freedom is also presented, along with an overview of the STE-based emerged applications and future research perspectives.

Enhanced Optoelectronic Performance Induced by Ion Migration in Lead-Free CsCu2I3 Single-Crystal Microrods

Lead-free perovskite has attracted great attention in realizing high-performance optoelectronic devices due to their excellent atmospheric stability and nontoxic characteristics. Although a pronounced ion migration effect has been observed in this new class of materials, its potential in enhancing the overall device performance is yet to be fully explored. In this work, we studied the effect of ion migrations on the carrier transport behavior and found that the recoverable migration process can contribute to enhancing the on/off ratio in a lead-free CsCu2I3 single-crystal microrod-based photodetector. In detail, we synthesized CsCu2I3 single-crystal microrods via an in-plane self-assembly supersaturated crystallization approach. These microrods with well-defined morphologies were then used to construct ultraviolet (UV)-band photodetectors, which outperform most reported lead-free perovskite photodetectors based on individual single crystals. Simultaneously, ion migration can result in asymmetric band bending in the two-terminal device, as confirmed by surface potential profiling with Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). Such an effect can be harnessed to increase the on/off ratio by almost an order of magnitude. Furthermore, the lead-free CsCu2I3 single crystal exhibits excellent thermal and air stabilities. These findings demonstrate that the CsCu2I3 single-crystal microrods can be used in stable and efficient photodetection, and the ion migration effect can potentially be utilized for improving the optoelectronic performance of lead-free devices.

Meter-scale chemiluminescent carbon nanodot films for temperature imaging

Chemiluminescence (CL), as one class of luminescence driven by chemical reaction, exhibits obvious temperature-dependence in its light emission process. Herein, temperature-dependent CL emission of carbon nanodots (CDs) in the chemical reaction of peroxalate and hydrogen peroxide is demonstrated and temperature imaging based on the temperature-dependent CL has been established for the first time. In detail, the temperature-dependent CL emission of CDs in the chemical reaction of peroxalate and hydrogen peroxide is observed, and the linear relationship between the CL intensity and temperature is demonstrated in both the CL solution and film, enabling their applications in temperature sensing and imaging capabilities. The increase of the CL emission with temperature can be attributed to the accelerated electron exchange between the CDs and intermediate generated in the peroxalate system. Meter-scale chemiluminescent CD films have been constructed. The CL sensor based on the films presents a high spatial resolution of 0.4 mm and an outstanding sensitivity of 0.08 °C^-1, which is amongst the best values for the thermographic luminophores. With the unique temperature response and flexible properties, non-planar, meter-scale and sensitive palm temperature imaging has been achieved. These findings present new opportunities for designing CL-based temperature probes and thermography.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Zirconium-Based Perovskites for Large-Area and Ultraflexible X-ray Scintillator Screens

Flexible scintillator screens with environmental stability, high sensitivity, and low cost have emerged as candidates for X-ray imaging applications. Here, a large-scale and cost-efficient solution synthesis of the vacancy-ordered double perovskite Cs₂ ZrCl₆ , which is characterized by thermal activation delayed fluorescence (TADF) dominated by triplet emission under X-ray irradiation, is demonstrated. The large Stokes shift and efficient luminescence collection of TADF effectively ensure the light outcoupling efficiency. Further, flexible X-ray scintillator screens with an area of 400 cm² are prepared using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as the carrier, exhibiting excellent scintillation properties with light yields as high as 49 400 photons MeV^-1 , spatial resolutions up to 18 lp mm^-1 and detection limits as low as 65 nGy s^-1 . Finally, the high-quality imaging results of non-planar and dynamic objects by such screens are demonstrated. It is believed that the explored Cs₂ ZrCl₆ @PDMS flexible scintillator screens would offer a big step toward expanding the application range of scintillators in different environments.

Vapor-Assisted In Situ Recrystallization for Efficient Tin-Based Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Tin-based perovskites are a promising candidates to replace their toxic lead-based counterparts in optoelectronic applications, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the development of tin perovskite LEDs is slow due to the challenge of obtaining high-quality tin perovskite films. Here, a vapor-assisted spin-coating method is developed to achieve high-quality tin perovskites and high-efficiency LEDs. It is revealed that solvent vapor can lead to in situ recrystallization of tin perovskites during the film-formation process, thus significantly improving the crystalline quality with reduced defects. An antioxidant additive is further introduced to suppress the oxidation of Sn²⁺ and increase the photoluminescence quantum efficiency up to ≈30%, which is an approximately fourfold enhancement in comparison with that of the control method. As a result, efficient tin perovskite LEDs are achieved with a peak external quantum efficiency of 5.3%, which is among the highest efficiency of lead-free perovskite LEDs.

Carbazole-Containing Polymer-Assisted Trap Passivation and Hole-Injection Promotion for Efficient and Stable CsCu2 I3 -Based Yellow LEDs

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are emerging light sources for next-generation lighting and display technologies; however, their development is greatly plagued by difficulty in achieving yellow electroluminescence, environmental instability, and lead toxicity. Copper halide CsCu₂ I₃ with intrinsic yellow emission emerges as a highly promising candidate for eco-friendly LEDs, but the electroluminescent performance is limited by defect-related nonradiative losses and inefficient charge transport/injection. To solve these issues, a hole-transporting poly(9-vinlycarbazole) (PVK)-incorporated engineering into CsCu₂ I₃ emitter is proposed. PVK with carbazole groups is permeated at the grain boundaries of CsCu₂ I₃ films by interacting with the uncoordinated Cu⁺ , reducing the Cu_Cs and Cu_I antisite defects to increase the radiative recombination and enhancing the hole mobility to balance the charge transport/injection, resulting in substantially enhanced device performances. Eventually, the yellow LEDs exhibit an 8.5-fold enhancement of external quantum efficiency, and the half-lifetime reaches 14.6 h, representing the most stable yellow LEDs based on perovskite systems reported so far.

Stable Yellow Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Quasi-Two-Dimensional Perovskites

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) show great potential in display and lighting because of their tunable wavelength, narrow emission bandwidths, and high color purity. Currently, the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of red and green PeLEDs has reached >23%. However, yellow PeLEDs are still rarely reported because of phase separation in mixed-halide perovskites and the coexistence of multiple phases in quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites L₂A_n-1B_nX_3n+1 (n = 1, 2, 3, ...), where L is a bulky organoammonium ligand. Here, we fabricate stable yellow PeLEDs by manipulating the phase distribution and incorporating rubidium cations (Rb⁺) in quasi-2D perovskites. The transient absorption results confirm that alkylammonium ligand butyl ammonium (BA) has a narrower phase distribution than phenylethyl ammonium (PEA) in the quasi-2D perovskites, resulting in a more blue-shifted emission peak. We further incorporate a proper molar ratio of Rb⁺ in the (BA)₂CsPb₂I₇ perovskite to blue-shift the emission peak to the yellow range. Finally, the yellow PeLEDs exhibit an EQE of 3.5%, and the stable emission peak is located at 595 nm. Our work provides a useful approach for the fabrication of highly efficient and stable yellow PeLEDs.

Orientation Regulation of One-Dimensional CsCu2I3 Perovskites for Visible-Blind Ultraviolet Photodetectors

Ternary copper halides with a formula of CsCu₂X₃ (X = Cl, Br, I) have been considered as prospective materials for ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors, due to their suitable band gaps, environmental stability, eco-friendliness, and low cost. However, the crystal orientation of one-dimensional (1D) CsCu₂X₃ perovskites significantly affects the exciton/carrier transport in the films and thus the photodetector performance. Here, we tune the crystal orientation and exciton/charge transport of 1D CsCu₂I₃ perovskite films by using antisolvents during the film formation process. Compared to the randomly oriented film treated by ethyl acetate, the CsCu₂I₃ film using toluene as antisolvent exhibits preferential (221)-oriented growth, which induces enhanced vertical exciton diffusion/charge transport and suppressed nonradiative recombination. On the basis of this strategy, we demonstrate a self-powered, stable, and visible-blind UV photodetector with significantly enhanced response speed and detectivity. Our work clarifies that tuning the crystal orientation of 1D CsCu₂X₃ perovskites is the key to achieve efficient exciton diffusion/charge transport and thus high-performance lead-free perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Highly Stable Tetrahydrothiophene 1-Oxide Caged Copper Bromide and Chloride Clusters with Deep-Red to Near-IR Emission

All-inorganic copper(I)-based metal halides have emerged as promising candidates for the replacement of lead perovskites because of their outstanding optical properties. However, the limited structure tunability prohibits their further exploration of properties including red photoluminescence (PL). Here, we report a series of red-emissive lead-free hybrid organic-inorganic copper halides A₆(C₄H₈OS)₁₂[Cu₈X₁₃][Cu₄X₄(OH)(H₂O)] (ACX-THTO, A = K, Rb, and Cs; X = Cl, Br; THTO = C₄H₈OS) with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 42%. These compounds possess similar crystal structures, and their emission can be tuned in the spectral range of 676-732 nm by controlling their compositions. Additionally, by removing and adding THTO, the reversible transformation between CsCu₂Br₃ featuring one-dimensional (1D) chains and Cs₆(C₄H₈OS)₁₂[Cu₈Br₁₃][Cu₄Br₄(OH)(H₂O)] (CCB-THTO) with zero-dimensional (0D) clusters can be realized. We also demonstrate that the incorporation of THTO in the crystal structures instead of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) can significantly enhance the stability and PL of compounds with the same inorganic components.
