Easy Synthesis of BiVO4 for Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Nanostructured electroless Ni deposited SnO2 for solar hydrogen production

Herein, Ni-decorated SnO2 (Ni@SnO2) nanostructures have been synthesized using SnO2 as a matrix via a simple electroless deposition method for the generation of hydrogen, a potent near-future fuel. XRD analysis confirmed the generation of rutile SnO2 in Ni@SnO2. FESEM and FETEM imaging exhibited the formation of SnO2 nanoparticles with a size of 10-50 nm, which are deposited with Ni nanoparticles (5-7 nm) and intermittent films (thickness 1-2 nm). The associated EDS elemental mapping validated Ni deposition on the surface of the SnO2 nanoparticles, further supplemented by FTIR, Raman and XPS analysis. Slight red shifts in the band gaps of the Ni@SnO2 nanostructures (in the range of 3.53-3.65 eV) compared to the pristine SnO2 nanoparticles (3.72 eV) were observed. Also, intensity quenching of the band gap and associated defect peaks were observed in PL analysis. The Ni@SnO2 nanostructures were used as photocatalysts and exhibited proficient hydrogen evolution. Among the samples, the 0.3 wt% Ni@SnO2 nanostructures showed the greatest hydrogen evolution, i.e., ∼50 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light irradiation versus pristine SnO2 (8.5 μmol g-1 h-1) owing to the enhanced density of active sites and effective charge separation. It is noteworthy that the hydrogen evolution is much better as compared to earlier reports of Pt-doped-SnO2 based materials.

Strain-Induced Photocatalytic H2 Production over BiVO4 in Pure Water without Any Cocatalyst

In this study, BiVO4 nanosheets (BiVO4-NS) were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. It is found that sonication-induced strain can effectively promote the H2 production over BiVO4-NS in the presence of pure water without any cocatalysts. With the assistance of the sonication, the H2 production over BiVO4-NS is 1.344 mmol·g-1 after 3 h simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 24.8 times higher than that of BiVO4-NS without sonication (0.054 mmol·g-1). In addition, the products of water oxidation are determined to be hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, BiVO4-NS also shows obviously enhanced photoactivity than that of the commercially available BiVO4 nanoparticles (BiVO4-C). The improved photoactivity of BiVO4-NS is attributed to the effective charge separation and low charge transfer resistance. The underlying mechanism of sonication-promoted water splitting is investigated by a variety of controlled experiments. The results show that ultrasonic waves can produce obvious strain inside the sample, which results in lattice distortion of BiVO4. Therefore, the conduction band of BiVO4 is obviously negative shifted, which is beneficial for H2 production. In addition, the strain in BiVO4 also produces local polarization of the sample, which effectively promotes the charge transfer and separation process. It is hoped that our study could provide a new strategy for achieving efficient photocatalytic water splitting.

Recent Developments in Nickel-Based Layered Double Hydroxides for Photo(-/)electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), especially those containing nickel (Ni), are increasingly recognized for their potential in photo(-/)electrocatalytic water oxidation due to the abundant availability of Ni, their corrosion resistance, and their minimal toxicity. This review provides a comprehensive examination of Ni-based LDHs in electrocatalytic (EC), photocatalytic (PC), and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water oxidation processes. The review delves into the operational principles, highlighting similarities and distinctions as well as the benefits and limitations associated with each method of water oxidation. It includes a detailed discussion on the synthesis of monolayer, ultrathin, and bulk Ni-based LDHs, focusing on the merits and drawbacks inherent to each synthesis approach. Regarding the EC oxygen evolution reaction (OER), strategies to improve catalytic performance and insights into the structural evolution of Ni-based LDHs during the electrocatalytic process are summarized. Furthermore, the review extensively covers the advancements in Ni-based LDHs for PEC OER, including an analysis of semiconductors paired with Ni-based LDHs to form photoanodes, with a focus on their enhanced activity, stability, and underlying mechanisms facilitated by LDHs. The review concludes by addressing the challenges and prospects in the development of innovative Ni-based LDH catalysts for practical applications. The comprehensive insights provided in this paper will not only stimulate further research but also engage the scientific community, thus driving the field of photo(-/)electrocatalytic water oxidation forward.

CuAs2O4: Design, Hydrothermal Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Photocatalytic Dye Degradation, Hydrogen Evolution Reaction, Knoevenagel Condensation Reaction, and Thermal Studies

CuAs2O4 has been explored as a heterogeneous catalyst in the fields of photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and solvent-free organic transformation reactions. The homogeneity has been successfully attained for the first time by designing a pH-assisted hydrothermal synthesis technique. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that no phase transition has been observed by lowering the temperature up to 103 K with no existence of satellite reflections. The crystal structure exhibits tetragonal symmetry with space group P42/mbc and consists of [CuO6] octahedra and [AsO3E] tetrahedra (E represents the stereochemically active lone pair). Structural investigation shows a cylindrical void inside the structure, which could lead to interesting physical and chemical properties. The photocatalytic dye degradation efficiency with methylene blue (MB) showed ∼100% degradation, though the degradation efficiency increased by 2-fold with the addition of 6% H2O2. The reusability of the catalyst up to the 10th cycle with ∼35% MB dye degradation has been established. It can exhibit HER activity with a low overpotential of 165 mV with respect to RHE to attain the current density of j = 10 mA cm-2. SEM and TEM revealed rod-shaped particles, which supported the large number of catalytic active sites. The structural consistency of the catalyst after photodegradation and HER studies is confirmed by the PXRD pattern. XPS confirms the oxidation state of Cu and As in the compound. The catalytic activity toward the Knoevenagel condensation reaction at moderate temperature under solvent-free condition is also studied. TG-DTA shows an endothermic minimum (Tmin) at 436 °C due to the mass loss of As2O3.

Photo-assisted microbial fuel cell systems: critical review of scientific rationale and recent advances in system development

Bioelectrochemical systems such as microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have gained extensive attention due to their abilities to simultaneously treat wastewater and generate renewable energy resources. Recently, to boost the system performance, the photoelectrode has been incorporated into MFCs for effectively exploiting the synergistic interaction between light and microorganisms, and the resultant device is known as photo-assisted microbial fuel cells (photo-MFCs). Combined with the metabolic reaction of organic compounds by microorganisms, photo-MFCs are capable of simultaneously converting both chemical energy and light energy into electricity. This article aims to systematically review the recent advances in photo-MFCs, including the introduction of specific photosynthetic microorganisms used in photo-MFCs followed by the discussion of the fundamentals and configurations of photo-MFCs. Moreover, the materials used for photoelectrodes and their fabrication approaches are also explored. This review has shown that the innovative strategy of utilizing photoelectrodes in photo-MFCs is promising and further studies are warranted to strengthen the system stability under long-term operation for advancing practical application.

Scaling up BiVO4 Photoanodes on Porous Ti Transport Layers for Solar Hydrogen Production

Commercialization of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting devices requires the development of large-area, low-cost photoanodes with high efficiency and photostability. Herein, we address these challenges by using scalable fabrication techniques and porous transport layer (PTLs) electrode supports. We demonstrate the deposition of W-doped BiVO4 on Ti PTLs using successive-ionic-layer-adsorption-and-reaction methods followed by boron treatment and chemical bath deposition of NiFeOOH co-catalyst. The use of PTLs that facilitate efficient mass and charge transfer allowed the scaling of the photoanodes (100 cm2 ) while maintaining ~90 % of the performance obtained with 1 cm2 photoanodes for oxygen evolution reaction, that is, 2.10 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. This is the highest reported performance to date. Integration with a polycrystalline Si PV cell leads to bias-free water splitting with a stable photocurrent of 208 mA for 6 h and 2.2 % solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. Our findings highlight the importance of photoelectrode design towards scalable PEC device development.

Oxygenated Triazine-Heptazine Heterostructure Creates an Enormous Ascension to the Visible Light Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance of Porous C3 N4 Nanosheets

A highly efficient g-C₃ N₄ photocatalyst is developed by a novel one-pot thermal polymerization method under a salt fog environment generated by heating the aqueous solution of urea and mixed metal salts of NaCl/KCl, namely SF-CN. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the oxygenation and chemical etching of the salt fog, the obtained SF-CN is an oxygenated ultrathin porous carbon nitride with an intermolecular triazine-heptazine heterostructure, meanwhile, shows enlarged specific surface area, greatly enhanced absorption of visible light, narrowed band gap with a lower conduction band, and an increased photocurrent response due to the effective separation of photogenerated holes and electrons, comparing to those of pristine g-C₃ N₄ . The theoretical simulations further reveal that the triazine-heptazine heterostructure possesses better photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) capability than pure triazine and heptazine carbon nitrides. In turn, SF-CN demonstrates an excellent visible light PHE rate of 18.13 mmol h^-1  g^-1 , up to 259.00 times of that of pristine g-C₃ N₄ .

One-step hydrothermal preparation of Ta-doped ZnO nanorods for improving decolorization efficiency under visible light

In this work, Ta-doped ZnO (Ta-ZnO) nanomaterials were synthesized by the hydrothermal method at different temperatures (110, 150, and 170 °C) for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light. Ta doping significantly affects the crystal defects, optical properties, and MB photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO materials. The optical absorption edge of Ta-ZnO 150 was redshifted compared to undoped ZnO, correlating to bandgap narrowing (E _gTa-ZnO = 2.92 eV; E _gZnO = 3.07 eV), implying that Ta doped ZnO is capable of absorbing visible light. Besides, Ta-doping was the reason for enhanced blue light emission in the photoluminescence spectrum, which is related to the oxygen defect V ⁰ _O. It is also observed in the XPS spectra, where the percentage of oxygen in the oxygen-deficient regions (O_531.5 eV) of Ta-ZnO150 is higher than that of ZnO150. It is an important factor in enhancing ZnO's photocatalytic efficiency. The MB degradation efficiency of Ta-doped ZnO reached the highest for Ta-ZnO 150 and was 2.5 times higher than ZnO under a halogen lamp (HL). Notably, the influence of hydrothermal temperature on the structural, morphological, and photoelectrochemical properties was discussed in detail. As a result, the optimal hydrothermal temperature for synthesizing the nanorod is 150 °C. Furthermore, photocatalytic experiments were also performed under simulated sunlight and natural sunlight. The nature of the photo-oxidative degradation of MB was also investigated.

Morphological guided sphere to dendrite BiVO4 for highly efficient organic pollutant removal and photoelectrochemical performance under solar light

Monoclinic BiVO₄ (m-BiVO₄) has been reported as promising phase for solar light driven photocatalysis. However, in the case of morphology guided BiVO₄ with different synthetic conditions maintaining the m-BiVO₄ phase remains a substantial challenge for achieving an efficient photocatalyst driven by solar light. Herein, a simple hydrothermal approach was used to produce well-defined template free m-BiVO₄ dendrites with distinct branches for photo catalytically removal of organic pollutant and photocurrent generation. The development of monoclinic dendrite BiVO₄ was confirmed after comprehensive structural, morphological, and optical examinations. FE-SEM images of m-BiVO₄ revealed transformation of spherical to dendritic morphology with distinct branches by simply changing the HNO₃ to NaOH ratios from 2:1 to 2:2, which are named as BVO 2-1 and BVO 2-2, respectively. The BVO 2-2 dendrites exhibited improved activity of 98% towards methylene blue (MB) photodegradation upon simulated solar light irradiation. The BVO 2-2 dendrites photoelectrode showed an outstanding photocurrent density of 1.4245 mAcm^-2 than that of the BVO 2-1 spherical photoelectrode (0.7367 mAcm^-2). Enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical action, could be ascribed to the unique morphological changes provides photoactive sites, harvest more light utilization together with higher separation of e^-/h⁺ pairs. Furthermore, photocatalytic mechanism is investigated based on scavenger trapping agent, valence band XPS, UV Visible DRS and PL study. Our findings could pave the way for the development of dendritic nanostructure photocatalysts with improved photocatalytic activity.

Fabricating BiOCl/BiVO4 nanosheets wrapped in a graphene oxide heterojunction composite for detection of an antihistamine in biological samples

Antibiotics are essential medications for human and animal health, as they are used to battle urinary infections and bacterial diseases. Therefore, the rapid determination of antibiotic drugs in biological samples is necessary to address the current clinical challenge. Here, we developed a heterojunction ternary composite of BiOCl/BiVO₄ nanosheets enriched with graphene oxide (BiOCl/BiVO₄@GO) for accurate and minimal-level detection of an antihistamine (promethazine hydrochloride, PMZ) in urine samples. The BiOCl/BiVO₄ nanosheets were prepared by a wet chemical approach using a deep eutectic green solvent. The spectroscopic and analytical methods verified the formation and interaction of the BiOCl/BiVO₄@GO composite. Our results showed that the thoroughly exfoliated BiOCl/BiVO₄@GO composite retained good electrical conductivity and fast charge transfer toward the electrode-electrolyte interface in neutral aqueous media. In addition, the experimental conditions were accurately optimized, and the BiOCl/BiVO₄@GO composite showed excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of PMZ. Indeed, the BiOCl/BiVO₄@GO composite demonstrated a good linear response range (0.01-124.7 μM) and a detection level of 3.3 nM with a sensitivity of 1.586 μA μM^-1 cm^-2. In addition, the BiOCl/BiVO₄@GO composite had excellent storage stability, good reproducibility, and reliable selectivity. Finally, the BiOCl/BiVO₄@GO displayed a desirable recovery level of PMZ in urine samples for real-time monitoring.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline and Oxytetracycline Antibiotics by BiVO4 Photocatalyst under Visible Light and Solar Light Irradiation

The efficient degradation of a toxic antibiotic from an aqueous solution is essential for environmental protection. Our research aimed to fabricate a bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) catalyst via a facile hydrothermal method. The prepared catalyst exhibited a monoclinic phase with a band gap energy of 2.33 eV, indicating the excellent visible-light-active properties of a semiconductor. The photocatalytic performance of the synthesized BiVO4 catalyst was studied by determining the removal of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) antibiotics. After 240 min, under sunlight conditions, a high performance of 72% and 83% degradation of TC and OTC, respectively, was achieved. The photocatalytic degradation of the antibiotics correlates well with a first-order reaction, with a high rate constant of 0.0102 min−1. Photogenerated electrons and holes played an important role in the removal of the pollutant. After photocatalytic study, the structural stability of the prepared bismuth vanadate photocatalyst was confirmed. The photocatalyst provided a promising performance even after five successive runs. The result indicates the excellent cycling ability of the sample. The present work demonstrates a promising route for the preparation of a BiVO4 catalyst for the complete removal of toxic antibiotics in aqueous solutions.

Coconut Fiber Decorated with Bismuth Vanadate for Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Bismuth vanadate/coconut fiber (BiVO4/CF) composites were synthesized by coprecipitation and calcination methods. All catalysts used in this work were prepared by a simple coprecipitation method and fully characterized by means of XRD, SEM-EDS, PL, BET N2 adsorption, zeta potential, and UV-vis DRS. Degradation of indigo carmine (IC) under visible light irradiation was tracked by the UV-vis technique. It was documented that XRD patterns of BiVO4 and BiVO4/CF samples retained the monoclinic structure. From SEM, the CF sheets were visualized, covering the surface of BiVO4 particles. The specific surface area of the synthesized catalysts increased from 1.77 to 24.82 m2/g. The shift of absorption edge to a longer wavelength corresponded to a decrease in band gap energy from 2.3 to 2.2 eV. The photocatalytic degradation rate of the BiVO4/CF composite was five times higher than that of pristine BiVO4. Moreover, the photocatalyst can be separated and recycled with little change after the third times recycling. The improved activity of the composite resulted from the combination of the adsorption performance of the substrate CF and the photocatalytic activity of BiVO4. In addition, the position of the specific mechanism could occur via both the active species of superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical.

Exploring multifunctional behaviour of g-C3N4 decorated BiVO4/Ag2CO3 hierarchical nanocomposite for simultaneous electrochemical detection of two nitroaromatic compounds and water splitting applications

Development of multifunctional ternary nanocomposite based electrocatalysts for detection of toxic elements and generation of renewable energy describes an environmentally sustainable technique to address the dual challenges of pollution and energy. Herein, we adopted microwave-assisted synthesis to design a multifunctional graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) decorated BiVO₄/Ag₂CO₃ (BVG@C) hierarchical ternary nanocomposite for sensing and water splitting applications. The morphological, structural and elemental characterizations demonstrate the successful decoration of carbon nitride on the composite surface. The electrochemical activity of BVG@C modified glassy carbon electrode reveals excellent redox behaviour towards simultaneous detection of 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) and 4-Nitroaniline (PNA). The modified electrode shows rapid amperometric current response with high sensitivity of 2.368 μA mM cm^-2 and 1.534 mA mM cm^-2 and low detection limit of 0.012 μmol L^-1and 0.028 μmol L^-1, respectively for 4-NP and PNA. Moreover, the modified electrode was further investigated for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions and the electrocatalytic results show admirable activity and good stability for oxygen evolution with very low overpotential of 136 mV in alkaline medium. It is worthwhile to mention that the excellent activity of electrocatalyst can be ascribed to the decoration and electronic interaction of g-C₃N₄ with the BiVO₄/Ag₂CO₃ nanocomposite, increasing its surface area, active sites, charge transfer and decreasing resistance.

A comparative study of 0D and 1D Ce-ZnO nanocatalysts in photocatalytic decomposition of organic pollutants

Nanosized zinc oxide is an intriguing material that can be applied in various fields. In this study, Ce doped ZnO nano-catalysts (Ce-ZnO) were synthesized by two different methods (i.e., hydrothermal (Ce-ZnO-HT) and polymer gel combustion (Ce-ZnO-CB) methods) to compare their photodegradation efficiency. The prepared material characteristics were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, UV-Vis, PL, XPS, EDS, and BET. The bandgap of both nanoparticles (NPs) was 2.95 eV, despite the fact that the morphology of Ce-ZnO-HT NPs was 1D-rod-shaped and that of Ce-ZnO-CB NPs was 0D-spherical. However, the surface area and oxygen vacancy rate of Ce-ZnO-HT NPs were higher than those of Ce-ZnO-CB NPs. These differences are directly related to the photocatalytic activity of Ce-ZnO NPs. Accordingly, the results showed that photocatalytic efficiency was classified in the order Ce-ZnO-HT > Ce-ZnO-CB > pure ZnO, and the photocatalytic reaction rate constant of Ce-ZnO-HT used to decompose MB was 3.0 times higher than that of Ce-ZnO-CB. Interestingly, the photodegradation mechanism study revealed that hydroxyl radicals and holes were shown to be more important contributors to methyl blue degradation than photo-induced electrons and superoxide radical ions.

Influence of calcination temperature on photocatalytic H2O2productivity of hierarchical porous ZnO microspheres

Photocatalytic production of H₂O₂from water and atmospheric oxygen has been recognized as a green and sustainable chemical process, due to the abundance of raw materials and sustainable solar energy. Herein, flower-like hierarchical ZnO microspheres were prepared by hydrothermal method followed by calcination at different temperatures, and their photocatalytic performance in H₂O₂production was examined under simulated sunlight irradiation. The calcination temperature plays a vital role in the structure, morphology, and surface area of the final ZnO products as well as their optical and electrochemical properties, which are determining factors in their photocatalytic activity. The ZnO calcined at 300 °C (Zn-300) exhibits the highest activity and optimal stability, showing productivity of 2793μmol l^-1within 60 min of irradiation, which was 6.5 times higher than that of uncalcined ZnO precursor. The remarkable photocatalytic activity is attributed to enhanced light utilization, large surface area, abundant exposed active sites, improved separation efficiency, and prolonged carrier lifespan. Moreover, the results from cycling experiments indicate the as-prepared ZnO samples exhibit good stability and long-time performance. This work provides useful information for the preparation of hierarchical ZnO photocatalysts.

The construction of a dual direct Z-scheme NiAl LDH/g-C3N4/Ag3PO4 nanocomposite for enhanced photocatalytic oxygen and hydrogen evolution

Dual direct Z-scheme photocatalysts for overall water decomposition have demonstrated strong redox abilities and the efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Overall water splitting utilizing NiAl-LDH-based binary and ternary nanocomposites has been extensively investigated. The synthesized binary and ternary nanocomposites were characterized via XRD, FTIR, SEM, HRTEM, XPS, UV-DRS, and photoelectrochemical measurements. The surface wettability properties of the prepared nanocomposites were measured via contact angle measurements. The application of the NiAl-LDH/g-C3N4/Ag3PO4 ternary nanocomposite was investigated for photocatalytic overall water splitting under light irradiation. In this work, we found that in the presence of Ag3PO4, the evolution of H2 and O2 is high over LCN30, and 2.8- fold (O2) and 1.4-fold (H2) activity increases can be obtained compared with the use of LCN30 alone. It is proposed that Ag3PO4 is involved in the O2 evolution reaction during water oxidation and g-C3N4 is involved in overall water splitting. Our work not only reports overall water splitting using NiAl-LDH-based nanocomposites but it also provides experimental evidence for understanding the possible reaction process and the mechanism of photocatalytic water splitting. Photoelectrochemical measurements confirmed the better H2 and O2 evolution abilities of NiAl-LDH/g-C3N4/Ag3PO4 in comparison with NiAl LDH, g-C3N4, Ag3PO4, and LCN30. The observed improvement in the gas evolution properties of NiAl LDH in the presence of Ag3PO4 is due to the formation of a dual direct Z-scheme, which allows for the easier and faster separation of charge carriers. More importantly, the LCNAP5 heterostructure shows high levels of H2 and O2 evolution, which are significantly enhanced compared with LCN30 and pure NiAl LDH.

Visible Light-Assisted Photocatalysis Using Spherical-Shaped BiVO4 Photocatalyst

In this research work, we reported the synthesis of a spherical-shaped bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photocatalyst using a cost-effective, simple, chemical hydrothermal method and studied the effect of deposition temperatures on the structural, morphological, optical properties, etc. The XRD result confirmed the monoclinic scheelite phase of BiVO4. An XPS study confirmed the occurrence of Bi, V, and O elements and also found that Bi and V exist in +3 and +5 oxidation states, respectively. SEM micrographs revealed the spherical-shaped morphology of the BiVO4 photocatalyst. Optical investigation showed that the bandgap of the BiVO4 photocatalyst varied between 2.25 and 2.32 eV. The as-synthesized BiVO4 photocatalyst was used to study the photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet (CV) dye under visible light illumination. The photocatalytic degradation experiment showed that the degradation percentage of crystal violet dye using BiVO4 reached 98.21% after 120 min. Mineralization of crystal violet dye was studied using a chemical oxygen demand analysis.

Lattice Defects Engineering in W-, Zr-doped BiVO4 by Flame Spray Pyrolysis: Enhancing Photocatalytic O2 Evolution

A flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) method has been developed, for controlled doping of BiVO4 nanoparticles with W and Zr in tandem with the oxygen vacancies (Vo) of the BiVO4 lattice. Based on XPS and Raman data, we show that the nanolattice of W-BiVO4 and Zr-BiO4 can be controlled to achieve optimal O2 evolution from H2O photocatalysis. A synergistic effect is found between the W- and Zr-doping level in correlation with the Vo-concentration. FSP- made W-BiVO4 show optimal photocatalytic O2-production from H2O, up to 1020 μmol/(g × h) for 5%W-BiVO4, while the best performing Zr-doped achieved 970 μmol/(g × h) for 5%Zr-BiVO4. Higher W-or Zr-doping resulted in deterioration in photocatalytic O2-production from H2O. Thus, engineering of FSP-made BiVO4 nanoparticles by precise control of the lattice and doping-level, allows significant enhancement of the photocatalytic O2-evolution efficiency. Technology-wise, the present work demonstrates that flame spray pyrolysis as an inherently scalable technology, allows precise control of the BiVO4 nanolattice, to achieve significant improvement of its photocatalytic efficiency.

The effect of Fe(iii) ions on oxygen-vacancy-rich BiVO4 on the photocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

The surface oxygen vacancies could promote the photocatalytic O2 evolution of BiVO4. Simultaneously, Fe3+ ions in solution could facilitate the holes' transfer to improve the water oxidation reaction.

A β-cyclodextrin Modified Graphitic Carbon Nitride with Au Co-Catalyst for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production has attracted considerable attention as a renewable and environment-friendly method to replace other traditional production techniques. The performance of H2O2 production remains limited by the inertness of graphitic carbon nitride (CN) towards the adsorption and activation of O2. In this work, a photocatalyst comprising of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-modified CN with supporting Au co-catalyst (Au/β-CD-CN) has been utilized for effective H2O2 production under visible light irradiation. The static contact angle measurement suggested that β-CD modification increased the hydrophobicity of the CN photocatalyst as well as its affinity to oxygen gas, leading to an increase in H2O2 production. The rate of H2O2 production reached more than 0.1 mM/h under visible-light irradiation. The electron spin resonance spectra indicated that H2O2 was directly formed via a 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) over the Au/β-CD-CN photocatalyst.

Role of defects on TiO2/SiO2 composites for boosting photocatalytic water splitting

Defect engineering of semiconductor photocatalysts is considered as an evolving strategy to adjust their physiochemical properties and boost photoreactivity of the materials. Here, hydrogenation and UV light pre-treatment of TiO₂/SiO₂ composite with the ratio of 9 : 1 (9TiO₂/1SiO₂) were conducted to generate Ti³⁺ and non-bridging oxygen holes center (NBOHC) defects, respectively. The 9TiO₂/1SiO₂ composite exhibited much higher photocatalytic water splitting than neat TiO₂ and SiO₂ as a consequence of the electronic structure effects induced by the defect sites. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) indicated that hydrogenated and UV light pre-treated of 9TiO₂/1SiO₂ boosted a higher density of Ti³⁺ and NBOHC defect which could serve to suppress photogenerated electron-hole pair recombination and act as shallow donors to trap photoexcited electron. Overall, both defect sites in 9TiO₂/1SiO₂ delivered advantageous characteristic relative to neat TiO₂ and SiO₂ with the finding clearly illustrating the value of defect engineering in enhancing photocatalytic performance.
