Potential Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Response Facilitated by Intramolecular Charge Transfer in a Simple Schiff Base Molecule: Experimental and Theoretical Exploration

In vitro α-glucosidase, docking and density functional theory studies on novel azide metal complexes

Aim: The goal of this study is to synthesize new metal complexes containing N-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine and azide ligands as α-glucosidase inhibitors for Type 2 diabetes. Materials & methods: The target complexes (12-16) were synthesized by reacting N-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine (L1) with sodium azide in the presence of corresponding metal salts. The investigation of target protein interactions, vibrational, electronic and nonlinear optical properties for these complexes was performed by molecular docking and density functional theory studies. Results: Among these complexes, complex 13 (IC50 = 0.2802 ± 0.62 μM) containing Hg ion showed the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory property. On the other hand, significant results were detected for complexes containing Cu and Ag ions. Conclusion: Complex 13 may be an alternate anti-diabetic inhibitor according to in vitro/docking results.

Studying the Symphonizing Effect of NLO Properties in Hydrated and Non-hydrated Donor Acceptor Complexes Formed Via Charge Transfer

The present work intended to report the synthesis of newly designed donor-acceptor complexes of the pyrimidine-based system namely TAPHIA 1 and TAPHIA 2, which are symphonized to give the NLO properties. The methodologies adopted for both complexes were different and hence influenced their geometrical properties. The synthesized complexes were characterized using different techniques including SCXRD, FTIR, UV, PXRD, and TGA to confirm their formation. The SCXRD analysis revealed that TAPHIA 1 was crystallized in the Pca21 space group in an orthorhombic system while TAPHIA 2 was crystallized in the P21/c space group in a monoclinic system. The third-order NLO properties of both complexes were explored using the Z-Scan technique by employing a continuous wave (CW) diode laser of 520 nm. The third-order NLO parameters including nonlinear refractive index (n2), nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) and nonlinear optical susceptibility (χ (3)) were calculated at different powers; 40, 50 and 60 mW at fixed solution concentration (10 mM) for both the complexes. Moreover, the experimental properties including NLO, FTIR, and UV were well corroborated with theoretical results obtained at the B3LYP-D3/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory. The analysis of the theoretical and experimental properties of both complexes suggests that TAPHIA 2 is a better applicant to be employed in optical devices than TAPHIA 1 due to the enhanced ability of internal charge transfer.

Comparative assessment of structure-property relationships of new Cu(II) complex in selected density functionals

In order to evaluate the structure-property relationships of Cu(II) complex by using DFT methods, the structure of the newly synthesized Cu(II) complex, [Cu(6-Brpic)2(bpy)], was investigated by XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopic methods. In addition, Hirshfeld surface and NBO analyses were fulfilled to identify possible interactions in the intermolecular and coordination environment. The five different DFT methods (HCTH, M06L, TPSSTPSS, B3LYP, and CAM-B3LYP levels), having four different functionalities (the GGA, meta-GGA, hybrid-GGA, and range-separated hybrid), were carried out so as to investigate the structure-property relationship, considering the geometric parameters (bond lengths and angles), vibrational frequencies, electronic absorption wavelengths, electronic transitions, and linear and nonlinear optical parameters. The R2 for structural and vibrational parameters, as well as MPD%, MAD, an optimal scaling factor (λ) and overall root mean square (RMS) deviation, were considered only at vibration frequencies. While it was determined that M06-L and TPSSTPSS levels gave the best results for the bond lengths and angles of the Cu(II) complex, the best results for vibrational frequencies were obtained in the HCTH method along with these methods. In NLO parameters, the static and dynamic first-order hyperpolarizability (<β(0;0,0)> and β(-ω;ω,0)/<β(-2ω;ω,ω)>) values, the largest values were obtained in the HCTH method (38.817 × 10-30 and 437.86 × 10-30/201.55 × 10-30 esu), whereas the smallest values were found to be in the CAM-B3LYP/TPSSTPSS levels (6.118 × 10-30 esu, 8.270 × 10-30/11.730 × 10-30 esu). By regarding the static γ (<γ(0;0,0,0)>) and dynamic (<γ(-ω;ω,0,0)> parameters, the largest values were calculated in the M06L (232.101 × 10-36) and HCTH (1711.52 × 10-36) methods and the smallest values were obtained in the CAM-B3LYP (43.281 × 10-36 and 60.844 × 10-36) method. In fact, it is obviously seen that the β and γ values obtained by the aforementioned DFT levels are many times higher than that of the standard molecule of urea. These results indicate that the Cu(II) complex may be used as a potential NLO material to evolve optoelectronic devices.

Polaronic state of conducting oligomer as a new approach to design non-lieaner optical materials: A case study of oligofurans

The geometric, electronic and nonlinear optical properties of neutral and polaron based oligofurans are studied comparatively. We have reported the role of polaron to trigger the nonlinear optical response of oligofurans (nFu). The polaron based oligomers show excellent opto-electronic properties. The effect of polaron on nFu* chains is measured by electronic properties i.e (ionization energy, electron affinity, band gap) and global reactivity descriptors like softness, hardness and chemical potential than their neutral counterpart. An interesting trends of reactivity descriptors have been observed. Lower band gaps (EH-L = 4.66 and 4.41 eV) are observed for polaronic systems as compared to their neutral counterpart. On the other hand, the TD-DFT study further demonstrated that, as the size of chain increases, the absorption maxima (λmax) also increases with significant reduction in excitation energies (ΔE). Furthermore, the nonlinear optical response is confirmed through the linear polarizability (αo), static first order hyperpolarizability (βo) and dynamic (frequency denepndent) hyperpolarizability. Electric filed induced second harmonic generation (EFISHG) and electro-optic pockle effect (EOPE) at 532 nm and 1064 nm, commonly used lasers frequencies have also been employed. Our results showed that the maximum hyperpolarizabilities are observed for polaron based 7Fu* and 9Fu* i.e 1.3 × 104, and 3.1 × 104 au. This study concluded that these polaron based organic polymers (nFu*) are useful as an efficient NLO material with vast applications in different fields.

Unraveling the structure-property relationship of a chalcone-based push-pull molecule for optical limiting application in high-powered laser

In this work, the optical limiting response of a highly π-conjugated push-pull chalcone derivative (2E)-3-(2,3-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(3-nitrophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (abbreviated as 3DPNP) has been investigated. The structure-property relationship of 3DPNP was explored through spectroscopic investigation and quantum chemical computations. The existence of weak-non-covalent interactions and charge transfer species that responsible for the chemical stability of 3DPNP were studied by AIM and NBO analyses. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of vibrational and electronic contribution to non-linear optical (NLO) response of 3DPNP were discussed in detail. The normal vibrational modes associated with a change in the dipole moment, polarizability, first- and second-order hyperpolarizabilities of 3DPNP were identified using DFT calculations followed by potential energy distribution (PED) analysis using Gaussian 09 W software and Gar2ped program, respectively. The changes in the NLO parameters with respect to the varying frequencies and electric dipole fields were studied. The abrupt changes in the NLO properties were noticed when the frequency doubled, confirming the second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of 3DPNP. From the non-linear absorption and refraction studies through the z-scan experiment, the optical limiting threshold value of 3DPNP is determined to be 3.26 kJ/cm2, which shows the suitability of the material for optical limiting applications in the continuous wave (CW) laser regime.

Synthesis, crystal structures, spectroscopy, and quantum chemical studies on the 4-dimethylaminopyridinium-2,4-dinitrophenolate: an organic NLO material for optoelectronics

CONTEXT

In this work, the 4-dimethylaminopyridinium-2,4-dinitrophenolate (4DMAP + 2,4DNP) by slow evaporation solution growth method has been presented. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) (4000-400 cm-1) and FT-Raman (4000-50 cm-1) spectra were recorded for the grown crystal.

METHODS

The computational calculation has been carried out with density functional theory (DFT) in ground state with Gaussian program package. Optimized geometrical parameters (bond distances, bond angles, and dihedral angles) have been obtained and compared with X-ray crystallography data. The calculated fundamental vibrational frequencies from DFT/B3LYP with 6-311 +  + G(d,p) level of theory were scaled so as to agree with the observed results, and the scaling factors were reported.

RESULTS

Experimental and computed ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra in acetone and methanol solvents were found comparable to each other. Furthermore, the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) energies, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), nonlinear optical (NLO), hirshfeld surface (HS), and global chemical descriptors of the molecule were also calculated. The thermal stability and the melting point of the title compound were analyzed by the thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) techniques. The mechanical behavior of the organic single crystal was measured by Vickers micro-hardness method. The third-order nonlinear optical properties such as nonlinear refractive index (n2), nonlinear absorption coefficient (β), optical nonlinear susceptibility Reχ(3), and optical nonlinear susceptibility Imχ(3) were calculated by using the open and closed aperture Z-scan technique.

CONCLUSION

The theoretical and experimental NLO values clearly proposed that the nonlinearity of 4DMAP + 2,4DNP molecule could be helped as a potential candidate for optical limiting, frequency doubling, and optical switching applications.

Curcumin Analogue Spectral, Nonlinear Optical Properties and All-optical Switching Using Visible, Low Power Cw Laser Beams

In this study, we conducted the synthesis and diagnosis of compound denoted as 1A3, specifically, (2E,4E,9E,11E)-7-chloro-2,12-diphenyltrideca-2,4,9,11-tetraene-6,8-dione. The photoluminescent and UV-vis spectral properties of this compound are investigated. The compound is dissolved in both chloroform and DMF for analysis purposes. Compound 1A3's nonlinear optical (NLO) characteristics when dissolved in DMF, are extensively studied through a series of experiments including diffraction patterns (DPs) and Z-scan. The optical limiting (OL) property of the 1A3 compound is tested and a threshold value of 12.4 mW at the wavelength 473 nm is obtained. Additionally, we explored its potential for all-optical switching utilizing two low-power visible laser beams. Notably, we achieved a significant nonlinear refractive index (NLRI) reaching up to 5.921 x 10-11 m2/W. To analyze the obtained diffraction patterns, we employed the Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral equation and conducted meticulous simulations. The numerical outcomes showed satisfactory agreement with the experimental observations.

Suppression of human lysozyme aggregation by a novel copper-based complex of 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid

In this work, a new Cu(II)-based complex as a chemotherapeutic drug agent, formulated as[Cu(DCA)4(H2O)2]⋅4H2O⋅4MeOH, (DCA = 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid), namely 1 was successfully synthesized utilizing DCA as a ligand to arrest fibrillation in Human lysozyme. The 1 was thoroughly characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), spectroscopic (UV-Vis and FTIR) techniques, PXRD, and TGA analysis. Its crystal structure reveals a paddle wheel network around central copper metal ions. The Cu(II) metal ions exhibit a distorted square pyramidal configuration. The fluorescence titration studies showed moderate binding interaction of 1 with HuL with Ka of 6.3x105 M-1 at pH-2, 25 °C due to its interaction withAsp53, Tyr63, Val110, and Ala111 as shown by docking and simulation studies. 1suppresses the HuL fibrillation in a concentration-dependent manner, as demonstrated by ThT assay. At 200 µM concentration, it leads to the formation of smaller species of the protein in comparison to the control sample, as suggested by Light Scattering studies. The species formed are less hydrophobic and retain their native α-helix structure compared to the control samples, which are hydrophobic and form β-sheet rich amyloids as shown by ANS hydrophobicity assay and CD spectroscopy, respectively. Furthermore, morphological analysis of the species by AFM has demonstrated that, unlike mature amyloid fibrils in the control sample, HuL forms small-size aggregates in the presence of 1 under similar fibrillation conditions. It can be concluded that 1 effectively suppresses HuL fibrillation due to moderate binding to the protein.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Lighting up hydrogen peroxide in living cells by a novel quinoxalinamine based fluorescent probe

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), a member of small-molecule reactive oxygen species (ROS), plays vital roles in normal physiological activities and the occurrence of many diseases. In this work, two off-on fluorescent probes, QX8A-H₂O₂ and QX9A-H₂O₂, were firstly designed for H₂O₂ detection with novel fused quinoxalines as the fluorophores and boronate moiety as the reaction sites. By comparing the optical properties, QX9A-H₂O₂ with better performance was selected for further studies. QX9A-H₂O₂ exhibited a high sensitivity to H₂O₂ with the detection limit as low as 46 nM, and displayed a good selectivity towards H₂O₂ over other reactants such as ROS, biothiols and various ions. The detection was based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), proceeding through a sequential oxidative hydrolysis, 1,6-rearrangement elimination and decarboxylation process to release the fluorophore QX9A. Moreover, probe QX9A-H₂O₂ was cell permeable and was successfully employed in both exogenous and endogenous H₂O₂ imaging in living cells.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, and Computational Study of a Novel Organic Salt Obtained from Benzylamine and an Acidic Component

A novel Schiff base compound named as phenylmethanaminium (E)-4-((benzylimino)methyl)benzoate C₇H₁₀N⁺. C₁₅H₁₂NO₂ ^- (A) is synthesized by the chemical reaction of benzylamine and 4-carboxybenzaldehyde in ethanol, and the structure of the titled compound is verified using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Structural investigation inferred that the crystal packing is mainly stabilized by N-H···O and comparatively weak C-H···O bonding between the cation and anion and further stabilized by weak C-H···π and C-O···π interactions. Hirshfeld surface analysis is employed to explore the noncovalent interactions that are responsible for crystal packing quantitatively. Furthermore, we have used state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations to get comprehensive insights into the structure-optoelectronic property relationship for the entitled compound. The molecular geometry of compound A is optimized at the M06/6-311G* level of theory. The linear polarizability, third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) polarizability, total and partial density of states, and UV-visible spectrum are calculated through quantum chemical calculations. We believe that compound A is not only a new addition to crystallographic data but also possesses good optical and NLO properties for its potential use in lasers and frequency-converting applications.

Crystal Structure, Topological and Hirshfeld Surface Analysis of a Zn(II) Zwitterionic Schiff Base Complex Exhibiting Nonlinear Optical (NLO) Properties Using Z-Scan Technique

A mononuclear Zn(II) complex of (Zn(H2L) (CH3OH) Cl2) (1) has been synthesized by using a nonlinear optically active Zwitterionic Schiff base which is 4-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) amino) benzoic acid (H2L). Complex 1 has been structurally analyzed by FTIR and UV spectroscopy, TGA, Powder-XRD and single crystal X-ray diffraction. X-Ray crystallographic studies revealed Zn(II) complex crystallizes in a P21/c space group and exists in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry (τ = 0.68). The topological analysis of complex 1 showed that the underlying net is characterized by an unknown topological type and point symbol {342.468.510}, and multilevel analysis of complex packing as dimer gives a 18-c uninodal net with unknown topological type and point symbol {348.499.56}. The calculation results of a Hirshfeld surface analysis have been investigated to explore the H-bonding within the crystal. Third-order non-linear properties were also studied, which revealed that the lower input power (5.0 mM) for the material shows full transparency; however, it becomes opaque for higher input power. Such limiting behavior of complex 1 suggests its potential for instrumental protective devices against high laser illuminations.
