Characteristics, Accumulation, and Potential Health Risks of Antimony in Atmospheric Particulate Matter

Insights into the biogeochemical transformation, environmental impacts and biochar-based soil decontamination of antimony

Every year, a significant amount of antimony (Sb) enters the environment from natural and anthropogenic sources like mining, smelting, industrial operations, ore processing, vehicle emissions, shooting activities, and coal power plants. Humans, plants, animals, and aquatic life are heavily exposed to hazardous Sb or antimonide by either direct consumption or indirect exposure to Sb in the environment. This review summarizes the current knowledge about Sb global occurrence, its fate, distribution, speciation, associated health hazards, and advanced biochar composites studies used for the remediation of soil contaminated with Sb to lessen Sb bioavailability and toxicity in soil. Anionic metal(loid) like Sb in the soil is significantly immobilized by pristine biochar and its composites, reducing their bioavailability. However, a comprehensive review of the impacts of biochar-based composites on soil Sb remediation is needed. Therefore, the current review focuses on (1) the fundamental aspects of Sb global occurrence, global soil Sb contamination, its transformation in soil, and associated health hazards, (2) the role of different biochar-based composites in the immobilization of Sb from soil to increase biochar applicability toward Sb decontamination. The review aids in developing advanced, efficient, and effective engineered biochar composites for Sb remediation by evaluating novel materials and techniques and through sustainable management of Sb-contaminated soil, ultimately reducing its environmental and health risks.

Influence of anthropogenic activities on metals, sugars and PAHs in PM10 in the city of Fez, Morocco: Implications on air quality

Particulate matter (PM) is an important component in the atmosphere, affecting air quality, health, radiation balance, and global climate. To assess regional air quality in the city of Fez, an intensive field campaign was carried out in the autumn of 2019 in the Middle Atlas region of Morocco. Aerosol sampling was performed simultaneously at two urban sites in the city of Fez: (1) Fez University (FU), a sub-urban site, and (2) Fez Parc (FP), an urban site located in the city center of Fez, using PM10 collectors. Various laboratory analyses were carried out, including PM mass, trace metals, inorganic ions, OC/EC, sugar compounds, and PAHs. The results indicate that the PM10 mass (61 ng m-3) was comparable at both sites, with a 37-107 ng m-3 range. Most of the 19 investigated PAHs at the FU site (10.2 ± 6.2 ng m-3) were low-molecular-weight PAHs, while the most abundant PAHs at the FP site (6.9 ± 3.8 ng m-3) were mainly higher-molecular-weight PAHs. A diagnostic ratio analysis at both sites indicated that PAHs originated from fossil fuel combustion and traffic emissions from diesel engines, with Ant/(Ant + Phe) and Flu/(Flu + Pyr) ratios averaging 0.22 and 0.84, respectively. PMF analysis identified traffic emissions as a major source (30%), with secondary inorganic aerosols (20%) and biomass burning (14%). Polar plots highlight the dominance of local anthropogenic activities in PM pollution, with vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and biomass burning. This study shows that local sources and combustion processes significantly contribute to PM10 sources in Morocco, providing insights into air pollution mitigation in North Africa.

A review on sources of soil antimony pollution and recent progress on remediation of antimony polluted soils

Antimony (Sb) is a serious toxic and non-essential metalloid for animals, humans, and plants. The rapid increase in anthropogenic inputs from mining and industrial activities, vehicle emissions, and shoot activity increased the Sb concentration in the environment, which has become a serious concern across the globe. Hence, remediation of Sb-contaminated soils needs serious attention to provide safe and healthy foods to humans. Different techniques, including biochar (BC), compost, manures, plant additives, phyto-hormones, nano-particles (NPs), organic acids (OA), silicon (Si), microbial remediation techniques, and phytoremediation are being used globally to remediate the Sb polluted soils. In the present review, we described sources of soil Sb pollution, the environmental impact of antimony pollution, the multi-faceted nature of antimony pollution, recent progress in remediation techniques, and recommendations for the remediation of soil Sb-pollution. We also discussed the success stories and potential of different practices to remediate Sb-polluted soils. In particular, we discussed the various mechanisms, including bio-sorption, bio-accumulation, complexation, and electrostatic attraction, that can reduce the toxicity of Sb by converting Sb-V into Sb-III. Additionally, we also identified the research gaps that need to be filled in future studies. Therefore, the current review will help to develop appropriate and innovative strategies to limit Sb bioavailability and toxicity and sustainably manage Sb polluted soils hence reducing the toxic effects of Sb on the environment and human health.

Characteristics of PM2.5-bound metals in Japan over six years: Spatial distribution, health risk, and source analysis

Air sampling campaigns were conducted at 100 survey sites across Japan from April 2014 to February 2020, and a comprehensive database of atmospheric particles was obtained. In this study, the characteristics of PM2.5 and 26 metals were investigated in depth. Spatially, the concentration of PM2.5 gradually increased from the northeast to the southwest of Japan. The pollution in Kitakyushu City was the most serious, reaching 19.8 μg m-3. As an important particle component, metals did not show obviously spatial variation in Japan, with a sum concentration of 0.4 μg m-3. Anthropogenic metals only accounted for about 8% of the total metals, but they could pose a serious threat to public health. For children, the non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk due to exposure to anthropogenic metals could not be neglected in Japan; the corresponding HI and CR values at 100 survey sites ranged from 2.7 to 15.0 and 4.1 × 10-5 to 3.4 × 10-4, respectively. Adults faced lower health risks than children, with HI values ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 and CR values ranging from 2.0 × 10-5 to 1.6 × 10-4. The integrated health risk assessment results showed that the coastal region of the Seto Inland Sea and the north Tohoku Region were the most heavily polluted areas of Japan; in this study, 20 survey sites were finally determined to be high-risk sites, among which pollution control for Niihama City, Kitakyushu City, Hachinohe City, and Shimonoseki City were of first priority. With further combination with a positive matrix factorization model, it can be known that these four cities mainly had five to seven metal sources, and their heavy pollution was mainly caused by ship emissions, industrial emissions, biomass burning, and coal combustion. Overall, our study comprehensively revealed the regional patterns of PM2.5-bound metal pollution across Japan, which can help in making cost-effective risk management policies with limited national/local budgets.

Decryption analysis of antimony pollution sources in PM2.5 through a multi-source isotope mixing model based on lead isotopes

Antimony (Sb) in PM_2.5 has attracted close attention as a new air pollutant due to its extensive use in daily life. The identification of antimony sources in PM_2.5 by scientific methods is important to control its pollution. In this study, the Sb and other elements concentrations and Pb isotopic compositions in PM_2.5 and possible pollution sources (soil, road dust, traffic emission, coal-fired fly ash, local factory emission dust and cement dust) were analyzed. The results showed that the Sb in the PM_2.5 samples had seasonal change. The enrichment factors of Sb in PM_2.5 samples were all above 100 in four seasons, which indicated anthropogenic pollution. The average value of potential ecological risk index was at extremely high-risk level greater than 320. Based on Pearson correlation coefficient and hierarchical cluster analysis results, the pollution sources of antimony and lead in PM_2.5 samples were highly consistent which means that Pb isotopes might be a new and feasible tracer for Sb pollution in air. The sources analysis results based on Pb isotopes indicated that the proportion of Pb and Sb from coal-fired fly ash was the highest in winter (47.7%) and inclined to road dust in spring (34.5%), but it was mainly from traffic emissions in summer and autumn (34.2% and 32.8%). This study showed that Pb isotope tracing can be applied to predict the potential pollution sources, and it was also a feasible substitute for tracing Sb pollution in PM_2.5.

Short-term exposure to antimony induces hepatotoxicity and metabolic remodeling in rats

Antimony (Sb) poses a significant threat to human health due to sharp increases in its exploitation and application globally, but few studies have explored the pathophysiological mechanisms of acute hepatotoxicity induced by Sb exposure. We established an in vivo model to comprehensively explore the endogenous mechanisms underlying liver injury induced by short-term Sb exposure. Adult female and male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administrated various concentrations of potassium antimony tartrate for 28 days. After exposure, the serum Sb concentration, liver-to-body weight ratio, and serum glucose levels significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner. Body weight gain and serum concentrations of biomarkers of hepatic injury (e.g., total cholesterol, total protein, alkaline phosphatase, and the aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio) decreased with increasing Sb exposure. Through integrative non-targeted metabolome and lipidome analyses, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism; phosphatidylcholines; sphingomyelins; and phosphatidylinositols were the most significantly affected pathways in female and male rats exposed to Sb. Additionally, correlation analysis showed that the concentrations of certain metabolites and lipids (e.g., deoxycholic acid, N-methylproline, palmitoylcarnitine, glycerophospholipids, sphingomyelins, and glycerol) were significantly associated with hepatic injury biomarkers, indicating that metabolic remodeling may be involved in apical hepatotoxicity. Our study demonstrated that short-term exposure to Sb induces hepatotoxicity, possibly through a glycolipid metabolism disorder, providing an important reference for the health risks of Sb pollution.

Single-cell RNA sequencing reveals cell landscape following antimony exposure during spermatogenesis in Drosophila testes

Antimony (Sb), is thought to induce testicular toxicity, although this remains controversial. This study investigated the effects of Sb exposure during spermatogenesis in the Drosophila testis and the underlying transcriptional regulatory mechanism at single-cell resolution. Firstly, we found that flies exposed to Sb for 10 days led to dose-dependent reproductive toxicity during spermatogenesis. Protein expression and RNA levels were measured by immunofluorescence and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was performed to characterize testicular cell composition and identify the transcriptional regulatory network after Sb exposure in Drosophila testes. scRNA-seq analysis revealed that Sb exposure influenced various testicular cell populations, especially in GSCs_to_Early_Spermatogonia and Spermatids clusters. Importantly, carbon metabolism was involved in GSCs/early spermatogonia maintenance and positively related with SCP-Containing Proteins, S-LAPs, and Mst84D signatures. Moreover, Seminal Fluid Proteins, Mst57D, and Serpin signatures were highly positively correlated with spermatid maturation. Pseudotime trajectory analysis revealed three novel states for the complexity of germ cell differentiation, and many novel genes (e.g., Dup98B) were found to be expressed in state-biased manners during spermatogenesis. Collectively, this study indicates that Sb exposure negatively impacts GSC maintenance and spermatid elongation, damaging spermatogenesis homeostasis via multiple signatures in Drosophila testes and therefore supporting Sb-mediated testicular toxicity.

Accumulation of antimony and lead in leaves and needles of trees: The role of traffic emissions

Antimony (Sb) is a toxic metalloid, which has been increasingly used in the brake lining of vehicles, and increased concentrations have been found in soils near abundant traffic. However, since very few investigations of Sb accumulation in urban vegetation have been undertaken there exists a knowledge gap. We studied the concentrations of Sb in leaves and needles of trees in the Gothenburg City area, Sweden. In addition, lead (Pb), also associated with traffic, was investigated. Sb and Pb concentrations of Quercus palustris leaves at seven sites with contrasting traffic intensity varied substantially, correlated with the traffic-related PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) air pollution at the sites and increased during the growing season. Sb but not Pb concentrations were significantly higher in needles of Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris near major roads compared to sites at larger distances. In Pinus nigra needles at two urban streets both Sb and Pb were higher compared to an urban nature park environment, emphasising the role of traffic emissions for these elements. A continued accumulation of Sb and Pb in three years old needles of Pinus nigra, two years old needles of Pinus sylvestris and eleven years old needles of Picea abies was observed. Our data suggest a pronounced link between traffic pollution and Sb accumulation in leaves and needles, where the particles carrying Sb seem not to be transported very far from the source. We also conclude that there exists a strong potential for Sb and Pb bioaccumulation over time in leaves and needles. Implications of these findings are that increased concentrations of toxic Sb and Pb are likely to prevail in environments with high traffic intensity and that Sb can enter the ecological food chain by accumulation in leaves and needles, which is important for the biogeochemical cycling.

Air Quality Assessment by the Determination of Trace Elements in Lichens (Xanthoria calcicola) in an Industrial Area (Sicily, Italy)

This study provides data on variation in the content of metals and metalloids measured in the lichens (Xanthoria calcicola Oxner) collected in the Syracusan petrochemical complex (Sicily, Italy) which is considered one of the largest in Europe. Concentrations of eighteen trace elements measured in the lichens that were collected from 49 different points were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS) device. The concentrations of the typical elements of industrial emissions (As, Cr, Ni, and V) highlight the environmental criticality that exists in the study area. The interpretation of the data in terms of multi-element statistical analysis (FA) and enrichment factor (EFs) proved to be particularly useful in identifying several sources that contribute to the presence of trace elements in the atmospheric particulate between anthropogenic emissions and geogenic emissions. The results of this study reveal the versatility of the lichen species Xanthoria calcicola Oxner in the search for trace elements in highly anthropized environments, so the approach followed in this study can also be applied to other industrial contexts.

Antimony and sleep health outcomes: NHANES 2009-2016

OBJECTIVES

Following an earlier National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2008 analysis, we investigated the association between urine antimony and sleep health using more recent data, new measures of sleep health, and multiple measures of urine density adjustment in NHANES 2009-2016.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

SETTING

United States, national population-based survey.

MEASUREMENTS

Multinomial logistic regression (sleep duration) and a generalized linear model with log-binomial regression (OSA, daytime sleepiness, sleep problems) were used to analyze the association of urinary antimony with sleep health outcomes. Urine creatinine and osmolality were considered, combined with statistical adjustment and standardization to account for urine density.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 8133 adult participants over 20 years of age were used using NHANES 2009-2016.

RESULTS

We did not observe associations between urine antimony and short sleep duration or sleep problems. We observed mixed results for long sleep duration; there was a negative association in NHANES 2015-2016 and no association in NHANES 2009-2014. For self-reported symptoms of OSA, which were only available in 2015-2016, we observed a positive association for upper quartile urine antimony compared with the first quartile (RR = 1.24; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.50) and a test for trend, P= .02.

CONCLUSION

Urinary antimony was not consistently associated with short sleep duration, long sleep duration, or sleep problems, despite the findings from a relatively recent scientific article using earlier waves of NHANES. We observed a positive association between antimony and symptoms of OSA; this cross-sectional analysis requires confirmation.

Preparation of hexamethylol melamine resin with low crystallization water and low viscosity for hexamethylol melamine/polyvinyl alcohol composite membrane

Hexamethylol melamine resins (HMM) with low crystallization water content and low viscosity were prepared by inhibiting the condensation polymerization of low hexamethylol melamine. The effects of catalyst, pH, formalde-hyde/melamine ratio, reaction temperature and time on the synthesis parameters of HMM were investigated. The results showed that the sample (HMM8) synthesized with Na2CO3-NaHCO3 as catalyst had the crystallization water content lower than 10%, being with a viscosity of about 0.26 Pa·s. The melting temperature of HMM8/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) curing system was about 164.3 °C. It was found that the higher the amount of formaldehyde, the greater the hydroxyl methyl bounded to each triazine ring. Compared with the traditional melamine formaldehyde resin which had the crystallization water content of about 20–30%, the production of this resin was expected to reduce the energy consumption of industrial reaction, while the resin with 10% crystallization water content was more conducive to the development of alloying HMM/PVA composite membrane.

Electrothermal Desolvation-Enhanced Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma-Induced Vapor Generation for Sensitive Determination of Antimony by Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry

A novel simple electrothermal desolvation-enhanced dielectric barrier discharge plasma-induced vapor generation (ETD-DBD-PIVG) method has been developed for sensitive Sb determination by atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). In our proposed ETD-DBD-PIVG, 20 μL sample solution was dried first; then, the resulting solution residue was directly converted into molecular volatile species efficiently through the interactions with hydrogen-doped DBD plasma; and finally, it was transported to AFS for detection. It was found that the desolvation process could greatly enhance Sb vapor generation, and the Sb fluorescence signal intensity is almost independent of its speciation, where comparable sensitivity is achieved for Sb(III) and Sb(V), enabling efficient total Sb detection without pre-reduction. Influencing parameters were evaluated in detail, including heating time, discharge gap, solution pH, and flow rates of argon and hydrogen, as well as coexisting ion interference. Under optimized conditions, the limit of detection was calculated as 0.86 μg L^-1 (17.2 pg) for Sb. The accuracy of the proposed method was validated by the analysis of certified reference materials of simulated natural water samples and several river water samples. Compared with conventional hydride generation, the new ETD-DBD-PIVG offers an alternative green vapor generation technique with several advantages: (1) it eliminates the use of a sample flow system (e.g., no use of any syringe or peristaltic pump); instead, 20 μL of a sample is directly pipetted onto the glass plate for analysis; (2) it greatly simplifies the sample pretreatment steps as no pre-reduction process is needed; (3) it is sensitive and suitable for volume-limited sample analysis: efficient Sb vapor generation without chemical reducing reagents in ETD-DBD-PIVG enables Sb detection with an absolute limit at the picogram level. All the results demonstrate that the proposed method provides a simple, green, and sensitive method for Sb determination and it can also be extended to other elements such as Cd and As.

Foliar dust as a reliable environmental monitor of heavy metal pollution in comparison to plant leaves and soil in urban areas

Pollution of atmospheric particulate matter carrying heavy metals has posed a great threat to various ecosystem compartments. Here, a total of 540 samples from four ecosystem compartments (plant leaves, foliar dust, surface soil, and subsoil) were collected in urban soil-plant systems to characterize the heavy metal concentration and composition of foliar dust, to verify the suitability of foliar dust as an environmental monitor, and to explore the importance of foliar dust in shaping the heavy metal composition in plant leaves. We found that the concentrations of all detected elements (lead, zinc, copper, chromium, nickel, and manganese) in foliar dust were the highest among the four ecosystem compartments. The mass of element per unit leaf area, considering both the dust retention amount and the heavy metal concentration of foliar dust, had significant positive correlations with the degree of heavy metal pollution in soil. Foliar dust could reflect ambient elemental composition most reliably among the four ecosystem compartments. The above findings show that foliar dust is more suitable for environmental monitoring than soil and plant materials in urban areas. In addition, the elemental composition of plant leaves differed significantly with different soil-plant systems although species identity dominated the leaf elemental composition. The variation partitioning model and the partial correlation analysis confirm that foliar dust plays a more important role in shaping the elemental composition of plant leaves than soil. This study provides a new way for environmental pollution monitoring and contributes to a comprehensive understanding of atmospheric particulate matter.
