Separation of Excess Fluoride from Water Using Amorphous and Crystalline AlOOH Adsorbents

Synthesis of a Flaky CeO2 with Nanocrystals Used for Polishing

It is important to adapt the morphology of CeO2 to different applications. A novel flaky CeO2 with nanocrystals was successfully synthesized using the ordinal precipitation method and calcination. The size of the flaky CeO2 was about 10 μm, and the nanocrystals were about 100 nm. Under the action of the precipitant NH4HCO3, Ce3+ nucleated in large quantities. The nanosized crystals gathered into flakes driven by the surface energy. As the calcination temperature increased, the grains grew slowly by mass transfer due to the slow diffusion of reactants. By adding AlOOH to the starting material, the Al3+ doped into the CeO2 increased the content of Ce3+ in the CeO2, which improved the chemical activity of the CeO2. When the starting material's Al:Ce ratio was 5:1, the Ce3+ increased to 31.11% in the CeO2, which provided good application potential in the polishing field. After polishing by the slurry of flaky CeO2 for 1 h, the SiC surface roughness reduced from 464 nm to 11 nm.

Approaches for the Efficient Removal of Fluoride from Groundwater: A Comprehensive Review

Contamination of groundwater with fluoride represents a significant global issue, with high concentrations posing serious public health threats. While fluoride is a critical element in water, excessive levels can be detrimental to human health and potentially life-threatening. Addressing the challenge of removing fluoride from underground water sources via nanotechnological approaches is a pressing concern in environmental science. To collate relevant information, extensive literature searches were conducted across multiple databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the American Chemical Society, Elsevier, Springer, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. VOS Viewer software version 1.6.20 was employed for a systematic review. This article delivers an exhaustive evaluation of various groundwater fluoride removal techniques, such as adsorption, membrane filtration, electrocoagulation, photocatalysis, and ion exchange. Among these, the application of nanoparticles emerges as a notable method. The article delves into nano-compounds, optimizing conditions for the fluoride removal process and benchmarking their efficacy against other techniques. Studies demonstrate that advanced nanotechnologies-owing to their rapid reaction times and potent oxidation capabilities-can remove fluoride effectively. The implementation of nanotechnologies in fluoride removal not only enhances water quality but also contributes to the safeguarding of human health.

Leaching kinetics of fluorine during the aluminum removal from spent Li-ion battery cathode materials

The high content of aluminum (Al) impurity in the recycled cathode powder seriously affects the extraction efficiency of Nickel, Cobalt, Manganese, and Lithium resources and the actual commercial value of recycled materials, so Al removal is crucially important to conform to the industrial standard of spent Li-ion battery cathode materials. In this work, we systematically investigated the leaching process and optimum conditions associated with Al removal from the cathode powder materials collected in a wet cathode-powder peeling and recycling production line of spent Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Moreover, we specifically studied the leaching of fluorine (F) synergistically happened along with the removal process of Al, which was not concerned about in other studies, but one of the key factors affecting pollution prevention in the recovery process. The mechanism of the whole process including the leaching of Al and F from the cathode powder was indicated by using NMR, FTIR, and XPS, and a defluoridation process was preliminarily investigated in this study. The leaching kinetics of Al could be successfully described by the shrinking core model, controlled by the diffusion process and the activation energy was 11.14 kJ/mol. While, the leaching of F was attributed to the dissolution of LiPF6 and decomposition of PVDF, and the kinetics associated was described by Avrami model. The interaction of Al and F is advantageous to realize the defluoridation to some degree. It is expected that our investigation will provide theoretical support for the large-scale recycling of spent LIBs.

Adsorption removal of fluoride from polluted drinking waters using Mn-Al-La oxide

Trimetal oxides have received high attention in treatment of fluoride-polluted drinking waters. In this study, Mn-Al-La (MAL) oxide with a mole ratio of 2:1:1 was successively prepared and characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, and TEM. It exhibited as cotton-like assemblages (500-800 nm of axial lengths), and BET specific surface area was 52 m2/g. It was used to study fluoride adsorptions in aqueous solutions by batch experiments, under different adsorbent/adsorbate levels, times, temperatures, pH and coexisting anions, and treat simulated groundwater (with 2.85 mg/L fluoride and pH 7.0) by batch and column tests. Adsorption data well fitted to pseudo-second-order rate model (R2 = 0.996-0.999), and Langmuir (R2 = 0.962 - 0.997) and Freundlich (R2 = 0.964-0.989) isothermal models. Their maximum adsorption capacities could reach 45-113 mg/g. Only H2PO4- anions had a restrictive impact at pH 7.0, and there was a good removal ability at pH 3-9. Adsorption processes were spontaneous, endothermic, and random. Adsorption mechanisms were electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange at pH 7.0. Adsorption capacity could reach 73% of initial value at pH 7.0, after three cycles. All application data on the polluted groundwater treatments show MAL oxide is a potential adsorbent for fluoride removals.

Efficient Fluoride Wastewater Treatment Using Eco-Friendly Synthesized AlOOH

Fluoride ion is essential for health in small amounts, but excessive intake can be toxic. Meeting safety regulations for managing fluoride ion emissions from industrial facilities with both cost-effective and eco-friendly approaches is challenging. This study presents a solution through a chemical-free process, producing a boehmite (AlOOH) adsorbent on aluminum sheets. Utilizing cost-effective Al foil and DI water, rather than typical precursors, yields a substantial cost advantage. The optimized AlOOH adsorbent demonstrated a high fluoride ion removal rate of 91.0% in simulated wastewater with fluoride ion concentrations below 20 ppm and displayed a similar performance in industrial wastewater. Furthermore, the AlOOH adsorbent exhibited excellent reusability through a simple regeneration process and maintained stable performance across a wide pH range of 4 to 11, demonstrating its capability to adsorb fluoride ions under diverse conditions. The efficiency of the AlOOH adsorbent was validated by a high fluoride ion removal efficiency of 90.9% in a semi-batch mode flow cell, highlighting its potential applicability in engineered water treatment systems. Overall, the AlOOH adsorbent developed in this study offers a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable solution for effectively removing fluoride ion from surface waters and industrial wastewaters.
