Application of Nanocellulose in Oilfield Chemistry

Antibacterial Surgical Sutures Developed Using Electrostatic Yarn Wrapping Technology

A significant amount of research has been conducted on applying functional materials as surgical sutures. Therefore, research on how to solve the shortcomings of surgical sutures through available materials has been given increasing attention. In this study, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)/PVP/zinc acetate nanofibers were coated on absorbable collagen sutures using an electrostatic yarn winding technique. The metal disk of an electrostatic yarn spinning machine gathers nanofibers between two needles with positive and negative charges. By adjusting the positive and negative voltage, the liquid in the spinneret is stretched into fibers. The selected materials are toxicity free and have high biocompatibility. Test results indicate that the nanofiber membrane comprises evenly formed nanofibers despite the presence of zinc acetate. In addition, zinc acetate can effectively kill 99.9% of E. coli and S. aureus. Cell assay results indicate that HPC/PVP/Zn nanofiber membranes are not toxic; moreover, they improve cell adhesion, suggesting that the absorbable collagen surgical suture is profoundly wrapped in a nanofiber membrane that exerts antibacterial efficacy and reduces inflammation, thus providing a suitable environment for cell growth. The employment of electrostatic yarn wrapping technology is proven effective in providing surgical sutures with antibacterial efficacy and a more flexible range of functions.

TEMPO-oxidized nanofibrillated cellulose assisted exfoliation of MoS2/graphene composites for flexible paper-anodes

TEMPO-oxidized nanofibrillated cellulose (ONFC) with charged carboxyl groups is introduced for the efficient exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) MoS2/graphene composites. As an effective dispersant agent, ONFC can be easily absorbed between the adjacent layers, so as to prevent the accumulation of the exfoliated nanosheets. With the assistance of charged ONFC, the exfoliated MoS2/graphene is gradually increased in the aqueous dispersions with the elongated sonication time. After dewatering, self-standing MoS2/Graphene/ONFC/CNTs composite films are rationally constructed using ONFC as flexible fibrous skeleton, and CNTs/graphene as 1D/2D interpenetrating electrical networks. Ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets anchored on the 1D/2D heterogeneous networks is directly acted as an ideal paper-anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) without using traditional metallic current collector. The self-standing flexible electrode materials based on natural cellulose will promote the future green electronics with high flexibility, miniaturization, and increased portability.

Recent advancement in isolation, processing, characterization and applications of emerging nanocellulose: A review

The emergence of nanocellulose from various natural resources as a promising nanomaterial has been gaining interest for a wide range application. Nanocellulose serves as an excellent candidate since it contributes numerous superior properties and functionalities. In this review, details of the three main nanocellulose categorised: cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), cellulose nanofibril (CNF), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) have been described. We focused on the preparation and isolation techniques to produce nanocellulose including alkaline pre-treatment, acid hydrolysis, TEMPO-mediated oxidation, and enzymatic hydrolysis. The surface modification of nanocellulose through esterification, silylation, amidation, phosphorylation, and carboxymethylation to improve the diverse applications has also been reviewed. Some invigorating perspectives on the applications, challenges, and future directions on the relevant issues regarding nanocellulose are also presented.
