Magnetic MOF composites for the electrocatalysis and biosensing of dopamine released from living cells

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with fit ligands and metals can be integrated into electrochemical biosensors for the detection of various biomolecules. In this study, we have synthesized novel magnetic MOF composites as electrocatalysts and constructed a novel biosensor for electrochemical detection of dopamine. The composites named Fe3O4@ZIF-8@AuNPs-COOH are synthesized through layer-by-layer assembly. They exhibit excellent stability and cooperative catalytic activity. In addition, green recycling is readily achieved through magnetizing/demagnetizing the electrode. The large specific surface area and ordered porous structures of the magnetic MOFs ensure good dispersion of gold nanoparticles, while the carboxyl group efficiently shields other redox-active interfering substances. The proposed electrochemical biosensor accomplishes the sensitive detection of dopamine in human serums and living cells. This study broadens the application of MOFs in electrochemical biosensing, validates the feasibility of biosensors for in vivo analysis, and provides new insights into green sensing.

Reactive Extrusion Printing of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Films

An outstanding challenge for the field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is structuring to form forms with greater useability. Reactive extrusion printing (REP) is a technique for the direct formation of films from their molecular components on-demand and on-location. Here we apply REP for the first time to zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and study the interplay of solvent and molarity ratio on the phase distribution between ZIF-8 and ZIF-L in reactive printed films. Our results show that REP controllably directs phase formation between ZIF-L and ZIF-8 and that REP also gives control over crystal size and that high-quality ZIF-8 films, in particular, are produced in low-dispersity interconnected nanoparticulate form. Importantly, we show that REP is responsive to established surface-functionalization techniques to control important printing parameters of line width and thickness. This work expands the repertoire of REP to the important class of ZIFs.

Recent advances and synergistic effect of bioactive zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) for biosensing applications

The rapid developments in the field of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) in recent years have created unparalleled opportunities for the development of unique bioactive ZIFs for a range of biosensor applications. Integrating bioactive molecules such as DNA, aptamers, and antibodies into ZIFs to create bioactive ZIF composites has attracted great interest. Bioactive ZIF composites have been developed that combine the multiple functions of bioactive molecules with the superior chemical and physical properties of ZIFs. This review thoroughly summarizes the ZIFs as well as the novel strategies for incorporating bioactive molecules into ZIFs. They are used in many different applications, especially in biosensors. Finally, biosensor applications of bioactive ZIFs were investigated in optical (fluorescence and colorimetric) and electrochemical (amperometric, conductometric, and impedance) fields. The surface of ZIFs makes it easier to immobilize bioactive molecules like DNA, enzymes, or antibodies, which in turn enables the construction of cutting-edge, futuristic biosensors.

Theranostic nanoparticles ZIF-8@ICG for pH/NIR-responsive drug-release and NIR-guided chemo-phototherapy against non-small-cell lung cancer

This study leverages nanotechnology by encapsulating indocyanine green (ICG) and paclitaxel (Tax) using zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) as a scaffold. This study aims to investigate the chemo-photothermal therapeutic potential of ZIF-8@ICG@Tax nanoparticles (NPs) in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). An "all-in-one" theranostic ZIF-8@ICG@Tax NPs was conducted by self-assembly based on electrostatic interaction. First, the photothermal effect, stability, pH responsiveness, drug release, and blood compatibility of ZIF-8@ICG@Tax were evaluated through in vitro testing. Furthermore, the hepatic and renal toxicity of ZIF-8@ICG@Tax were assessed through in vivo testing. Additionally, the anticancer effects of these nanoparticles were investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Uniform and stable chemo-photothermal ZIF-8@ICG@Tax NPs had been successfully synthesized and had outstanding drug releasing capacities. Moreover, ZIF-8@ICG@Tax NPs showed remarkable responsiveness dependent both on pH in the tumor microenvironment and NIR irradiation, allowing for targeted drug delivery and controlled drug release. NIR irradiation can enhance the tumor cell response to ZIF-8@ICG@Tax uptake, thereby promoting the anti-tumor growth in vitro and in vivo. ZIF-8@ICG@Tax and NIR irradiation have demonstrated remarkable synergistic anti-tumor growth properties compared to their individual components. This novel theranostic chemo-photothermal NPs hold great potential as a viable treatment option for NSCLC.

Green conversion of waste alkaline battery material to zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and its iodine capture mechanism

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) exhibits excellent performance in capturing iodine. However, the solvent-based procedures and raw materials for ZIF-8 synthesis often lead to secondary pollution. We developed a solvent-minimizing method for preparing ZIF-8 via ball milling of raw material obtained from spent alkaline batteries, and studied its iodine-capture performance and structural changes. Exposure of the ZIF-8 to iodine vapor for 60 min demonstrated that it exhibited industrially competitive iodine-capture performance (the adsorbed amount reaches to 1123 mg g-1 within 60 min). Spectroscopic studies showed that ZIF-8 underwent a structural transformation upon iodine loading. Iodine molecules were adsorbed onto the surface of ZIF-8 and also formed C-I bond with the methyl groups on the imidazole rings, reducing iodine release. This work represents a comprehensive revelation of long-range order and short-range order evolution of ZIF-8 during iodine vapor adsorption over time. Moreover, this green synthesis of ZIF-8 is of lower cost and generates fewer harmful by-products than existing methods, and the produced ZIF-8 effectively entraps toxic iodine vapor. Thus, this synthesis enables a sustainable and circular material flow for beneficial utilization of waste materials.

Zeta Potential and Size Analysis of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Nanocrystals Prepared by Surfactant-Assisted Synthesis

The crystal nucleation and growth mechanism of monodispersed metal-organic framework nanoparticles were studied using time-resolved light dynamic, electrokinetic, and powder X-ray diffraction methods. We confirmed that zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocrystals follow a nonclassical crystal growth pathway, where a fast nucleation occurs with dense liquid clusters or nanocrystals forming spontaneously when two precursors are mixed. We also explored the zeta potential and solvodynamic size changes of ZIF-8 prepared by a surfactant-assisted synthesis. Three modulators, including 1-methylimidazole (1-mIm), tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (THAM), and (1-hexadecyl)trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), were studied. We found that 1-mIm dramatically increases the rate of nucleation of ZIF-8. With an increasing amount of 1-mIm, which functions as a coordination modulator, the size increases, and the zeta potential of ZIF-8 decreases. Whereas THAM, as both a coordination and a deprotonation modulator, increases the size and zeta potential of ZIF-8 simultaneously, CTAB, as a long alkyl cationic surfactant, mainly adsorbs on the surface of ZIF-8, and the zeta potential of the formed ZIF-8 is controlled by the amount of CTAB in solution compared with its critical micelle concentration. Overall, we reveal that the modulator type and concentration can be used to control the size and zeta potential of the dispersed ZIF-8 nanocrystals in a colloid system. The experiments also enable identification of the nucleation and crystal growth processes of ZIF-8. The findings will be applicable to other nanocrystals in colloid systems, which are used for heterogeneous catalysis and guest molecular loadings.

Recombinant streptococcal protein G-modified metal-organic framework ZIF-8 for the highly selective purification of immunoglobulin G from human serum

A novel solid phase extractant His-rSPG@ZIF-8 was prepared by covalently coupling recombinant streptococcal protein G (His-rSPG) with ZIF-8. The His-rSPG@ZIF-8 composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Due to the specific binding between the immunoglobulin binding region of His-rSPG and the Fc region of immunoglobulin G (IgG), the His-rSPG@ZIF-8 composite demonstrated exceptional selectivity in adsorbing IgG. In Britton-Robinson buffer (BR buffer) with a salt concentration of 500 mmol L-1 (0.04 mol L-1, pH 8.0), the His-rSPG@ZIF-8 composite exhibited a remarkable adsorption efficiency of 99.8 % for 0.05 mg of the composite on 200 μL of IgG solution (100 μg mL-1). The adsorption behavior of the His-rSPG@ZIF-8 composite aligns with the Langmuir adsorption model, and the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity is 1428.6 mg g-1. The adsorbed IgG molecules were successfully eluted using a SDS solution (0.5 %, m/m), resulting in a recovery rate of 91.2 %. Indeed, the His-rSPG@ZIF-8 composite was successfully utilized for the isolation and purification of IgG from human serum samples. The obtained IgG exhibited high purity, as confirmed by SDS-PAGE analysis. Additionally, LC-MS/MS analysis was employed to identify the human serum proteins following the adsorption and elution process using the His-rSPG@ZIF-8 composite material. The results revealed that the recovered solution contained an impressive content of immunoglobulin, accounting for 62.4 % of the total protein content. Furthermore, this process also led to the significant enrichment of low abundance proteins such as Serpin B4 and Cofilin-1. Consequently, the His-rSPG@ZIF-8 composite holds great promise for applications such as IgG purification and immunoassays. At the same time, it expands the application of metal-organic frameworks in the field of proteomics.

The Impact of ZIF-8 Particle Size Control on Low-Humidity Sensor Performance

An accurate humidity measurement is essential in various industries, including product stability, pharmaceutical and food preservation, environmental control, and precise humidity management in experiments and industrial processes. Crafting effective humidity sensors through precise material selection is crucial for detecting minute humidity levels across various fields, ultimately enhancing productivity and maintaining product quality. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), exhibit remarkable properties and offer a wide range of applications in catalysis, sensing, and gas storage due to their structural stability, which resembles zeolites. The previous research on MOF-based humidity sensors have primarily used electrical resistance-based methods. Recently, however, interest has shifted to capacitive-based sensors using MOFs due to the need for humidity sensors at low humidity and the resulting high sensitivity. Nevertheless, further studies are required to optimize particle structure and size. This study analyzes ZIF-8, a stable MOF synthesized in varying particle sizes, to evaluate its performance as a humidity sensor. The structural, chemical, and sensing properties of synthesized ZIF-8 particles ranging from 50 to 200 nanometers were examined through electron microscopy, spectroscopic, and electrochemical analyses. The fabricated copper electrodes combined with these particles demonstrated stable and linear humidity sensing capabilities within the range of 3% to 30% relative humidity (RH).

Naloxone-AuNPs@ZIF-8-Based Impedimetric Sensor Platform for Ultrasensitive Detection of Fentanyl and Fabrication of Fen-Track Prototype for Real-Field Analysis

Opioids are considered to be a global threat, and we are facing the worst opioid crisis of the decade. Synthetic opioids like fentanyl are highly potent and deadly toward human body, and hence its detection is an inevitable requirement globally. Naloxone is known for its antagonist property toward fentanyl, and we performed computational simulations to find their interactions and use this principle to build the first of a kind impedimetric sensor device, transduced by 3D-ZIF-8 with in situ encapsulated naloxone-gold nanoparticles. The probe is synthesized using a unique encapsulation strategy, thoroughly characterized by various physicochemical and microscopic tools. The sensor is highly selective toward fentanyl and can detect fentanyl up to 100 ppm in a synthetic sample. A prototype device is also built based on the synthetic calibration and applied to the spiked urine sample, and the performance is evaluated using statistical and machine learning tools.

MOF-based nanocomposites as transduction matrices for optical and electrochemical sensing

Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a class of crystalline microporous materials have been into research limelight lately due to their commendable physio-chemical properties and easy fabrication methods. They have enormous surface area which can be a working ground for innumerable molecule adhesions and site for potential sensor matrices. Their biocompatibility makes them valuable for in vitro detection systems but a compromised conductivity requires a lot of surface engineering of these molecules for their usage in electrochemical biosensors. However, they are not just restricted to a single type of transduction system rather can also be modified to achieve feat as optical (colorimetry, luminescence) and electro-luminescent biosensors. This review emphasizes on recent advancements in the area of MOF-based biosensors with focus on various MOF synthesis methods and their general properties along with selective attention to electrochemical, optical and opto-electrochemical hybrid biosensors. It also summarizes MOF-based biosensors for monitoring free radicals, metal ions, small molecules, macromolecules and cells in a wide range of real matrices. Extensive tables have been included for understanding recent trends in the field of MOF-composite probe fabrication. The article sums up the future scope of these materials in the field of biosensors and enlightens the reader with recent trends for future research scope.

Application of Zeolites and Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks in Dentistry-A Narrative Review

Zeolites and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are crystalline aluminosilicates with porous structure, which are closely linked with nanomaterials. They are characterized by enhanced ion exchange capacity, physical-chemical stability, thermal stability and biocompatibility, making them a promising material for dental applications. This review aimed to provide an overview of the application of zeolites and ZIFs in dentistry. The common zeolite compounds for dental application include silver zeolite, zinc zeolite, calcium zeolite and strontium zeolite. The common ZIFs for dental application include ZIF-8 and ZIF-67. Zeolites and ZIFs have been employed in various areas of dentistry, such as restorative dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics, implantology, periodontics, orthodontics and oral surgery. In restorative dentistry, zeolites and ZIFs are used as antimicrobial additives in dental adhesives and restorative materials. In endodontics, zeolites are used in root-end fillings, root canal irritants, root canal sealers and bone matrix scaffolds for peri-apical diseases. In prosthodontics, zeolites can be incorporated into denture bases, tissue conditioners, soft denture liners and dental prostheses. In implantology, zeolites and ZIFs are applied in dental implants, bone graft materials, bone adhesive hydrogels, drug delivery systems and electrospinning. In periodontics, zeolites can be applied as antibacterial agents for deep periodontal pockets, while ZIFs can be embedded in guided tissue regeneration membranes and guided bone regeneration membranes. In orthodontics, zeolites can be applied in orthodontic appliances. Additionally, for oral surgery, zeolites can be used in oral cancer diagnostic marker membranes, maxillofacial prosthesis silicone elastomer and tooth extraction medicines, while ZIFs can be incorporated to osteogenic glue or used as a carrier for antitumour drugs. In summary, zeolites have a broad application in dentistry and are receiving more attention from clinicians and researchers.

Food freshness monitoring using poly(vinyl alcohol) and anthocyanins doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 multilayer films with bacterial nanocellulose beneath as support

Multilayer intelligent freshness labels based on bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and anthocyanins doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (A-ZIF-8) nanocrystals were developed in this study. First, optical, structural, thermal, and surface characterizations of A-ZIF-8 nanocrystals were performed, and the successful incorporation of anthocyanins into ZIF-8 nanocrystals was demonstrated. Next, A-ZIF-8 was added into PVA, and multilayer films were fabricated by spin-coating PVA/A-ZIF-8 layers onto BNC. The effect of the number of deposition cycles on the barrier, mechanical, thermal, morphological, and colorimetric properties of multilayer labels was investigated. The ammonia sensing, mechanical, and barrier properties of the films were shown to be tuned by the number of the PVA/A-ZIF-8 layers on the BNC. Among the developed films, BNC-2PVA/A-ZIF-8 films with the best colorimetric sensitivity toward volatile ammonia were used to monitor the freshness of skinless chicken breasts. The changes in the ΔE and a* values of BNC-2PVA/A-ZIF-8 film demonstrated a good correlation with the microbial and TVB-N levels in samples over 10 days of storage at 4 °C.

Fabrication, characterization, and application of BiOI@ZIF-8 nanocomposite for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of acetaminophen from aqueous solutions under UV-vis irradiation

This work investigates the use of novel BiOI@ZIF-8 nanocomposite for the removal of acetaminophen (Ace) from synthetic wastewater. The samples were analyzed using FTIR, XRD, XPS, DRS, PL, FESEM-EDS, and ESR techniques. The effects of the loading capacity of ZIF-8 on the photocatalytic oxidation performance of bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) were studied. The photocatalytic degradation of Ace was maximized by optimizing pH, reaction time and the amount of photocatalyst. On this basis, the removal mechanisms of the target pollutant by the nanocomposite and its photodegradation pathways were elucidated. Under optimized conditions of 1 g/L of composite, pH 6.8, and 4 h of reaction time, it was found that the BiOI@ZIF-8 (w/w = 1:0.01) nanocomposite exhibited the highest Ace removal (94%), as compared to that of other loading ratios at the same Ace concentration of 25 mg/L. Although this result was encouraging, the treated wastewater still did not satisfy the required statutory of 0.2 mg/L. It is suggested that the further biological processes need to be adopted to complement Ace removal in the samples. To sustain its economic viability for wastewater treatment, the spent composite still could be reused for consecutive five cycles with 82% of regeneration efficiency. Overall, this series of work shows that the nanocomposite was a promising photocatalyst for Ace removal from wastewater samples.

Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of ZIF-67

Currently, antibiotic-resistant bacteria represent a serious threat to public health worldwide. Biofilm formation potentiates both virulence and antibiotic resistance of bacteria. Therefore, the discovery of new antibacterial and antibiofilm compounds is an issue of paramount importance to combat and prevent hard-to-treat bacterial infections. Zeolitic-imidazolate-frameworks (ZIFs) are metallo-organic compounds known to have various interesting chemical and biological applications, including antibacterial properties. In this study, we synthesized ZIF-67 nanoparticles, formed by imidazolate anions and cobalt cations, and found that they inhibit the growth of Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Sub-inhibitory concentrations of ZIF-67 were also able to significantly reduce the biomass of pre-established biofilms of these pathogenic bacteria. On the other hand, the ZIF-67 nanoparticles had null or low cytotoxicity in mammalian cells at those concentrations showing antibacterial or antibiofilm activities. Thus, our results reveal the potential of ZIF-67 nanoparticles to be used against pathogenic bacteria.

The Importance of Dean Flow in Microfluidic Nanoparticle Synthesis: A ZIF-8 Case Study

The Dean Flow, a physics phenomenon that accounts for the impact of channel curvature on fluid dynamics, has great potential to be used in microfluidic synthesis of nanoparticles. This study explores the impact of the Dean Flow on the synthesis of ZIF-8 particles. Several variables that influence the Dean Equation (the mathematical expression of Dean Flow) are tested to validate the applicability of this expression in microfluidic synthesis, including the flow rate, radius of curvature, channel cross sectional area, and reagent concentration. It is demonstrated that the current standard of reporting, providing only the flow rate and crucially not the radius of curvature, is an incomplete description that will invariably lead to irreproducible syntheses across different laboratories. An alternative standard of reporting is presented and it is demonstrated how the sleek and simple math of the Dean Equation can be used to precisely tune the final dimensions of high quality, monodisperse ZIF-8 nanoparticles between 40 and 700 nm.

Synthesis of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Using Glycerol Carbonate

In this study, we show that glycerol carbonate (GlyC), a bio-based derivative of glycerol, can be used as a suitable green solvent for the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In particular, a zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was synthesized by exploring several different experimental conditions (in terms of temperature, reaction time, and reactants' concentrations) to find that the yield of the reaction and the quality of the products, measured in terms of crystallinity, surface area, and porosity, were in line with those obtained in the most commonly (non-green) used solvents. GlyC was also found to be reusable for several cycles, maintaining the same original quality as a solvent for the synthesis. Finally, some indicators for the assessment of the greenness of a process (E-factor and PMI) revealed a milder environmental impact of GlyC with respect to other solvents.

Stable and Reusable Fe3 O4 /ZIF-8 Composite for Encapsulation of FDH Enzyme under Mild Conditions Applicable to CO2 Reduction

The enzymatic reduction of carbon dioxide presents limited applicability due to denaturation and the impossibility of biocatalyst recovery; disadvantages that can be minimized by its immobilization. Here, a recyclable bio-composed system was constructed by in-situ encapsulation under mild conditions using formate dehydrogenase in a ZIF-8 metalorganic framework (MOF) in the presence of magnetite. The partial dissolution of ZIF-8 in the enzyme's operation medium can be relatively inhibited if the concentration of magnetic support used exceeds 10 mg mL-1 . The bio-friendly environment for immobilization does not harm the integrity of the biocatalyst, and the production of formic acid is improved 3.4-fold compared to the free enzyme because the MOFs act as concentrators of the enzymatic cofactor. Furthermore, the bio-composed system retains 86 % of its activity after a long time of five cycles, thus indicating an excellent magnetic recovery and a good reusability.

Synthesis and characterization of biological macromolecules double emulsion based on carboxymethylcellulose/gelatin hydrogel incorporated with ZIF-8 as metal organic frameworks for sustained anti-cancer drug release

The field of nanotechnology has introduced novel prospects for drug delivery systems, which have the potential to supplant conventional chemotherapy with reduced adverse effects. Despite being a promising porous material, ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework, tends to agglomerate in water, which limits its applicability. In order to resolve this problem, we added ZIF-8 to hydrogels consisting of gelatin and carboxymethylcellulose. This improved their mechanical strength and stability while avoiding aggregation. We utilized double emulsions with the hydrogels' biological macromolecules to construct drug carriers with enhanced control over drug release. The nanocarriers were subjected to various analytical techniques for characterization, such as Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), zeta potential, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The findings of our study revealed that the mean size of the produced nanocarriers were 250 nm, and their zeta potential was -40.1 mV, which suggests favorable stability. The synthesized nanocarriers were found to exhibit cytotoxicity towards cancer cells, as evidenced by the results of MTT assays and flow cytometry tests. The cell viability percentage was determined to be 55 % for the prepared nanomedicine versus 70 % for the free drug. In summary, our study illustrates that the integration of ZIF-8 into hydrogels produces drug delivery systems with improved characteristics. Furthermore, the prepared nanocarriers exhibit potential for future investigation and advancement.

A Green Synthesis of CoFe2O4 Decorated ZIF-8 Composite for Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution

Low-cost, sustainable hydrogen production requires noble metal-free electrocatalysts for water splitting. In this study, we prepared zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) decorated with CoFe₂O₄ spinel nanoparticles as active catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were synthesized by converting agricultural bio-waste (potato peel extract) into economically valuable electrode materials. The biogenic CoFe₂O₄ composite showed an overpotential of 370 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a low Tafel slope of 283 mV dec^-1, whereas the ZIF@CoFe₂O₄ composite prepared using an in situ hydrothermal method showed an overpotential of 105 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and a low Tafel slope of 43 mV dec^-1 in a 1 M KOH medium. The results demonstrated an exciting prospect of high-performance noble metal-free electrocatalysts for low-cost, high-efficiency, and sustainable hydrogen production.

Calf thymus ds-DNA intercalation with pendimethalin herbicide at the surface of ZIF-8/Co/rGO/C3N4/ds-DNA/SPCE; A bio-sensing approach for pendimethalin quantification confirmed by molecular docking study

Pendimethalin (PND) is a herbicide that is regarded to be possibly carcinogenic to humans and toxic to the environment. Herein, we fabricated a highly sensitive DNA biosensor based on ZIF-8/Co/rGO/C₃N₄ nanohybrid modification of a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to monitor PND in real samples. The layer-by-layer fabrication pathway was conducted to construct ZIF-8/Co/rGO/C₃N₄/ds-DNA/SPCE biosensor. The physicochemical characterization techniques confirmed the successful synthesis of ZIF-8/Co/rGO/C₃N₄ hybrid nanocomposite, as well as the appropriate modification of the SPCE surface. The utilization of ZIF-8/Co/rGO/C₃N₄ nanohybrid as a modifier was analyzed using. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results showed that the modified SPCE exhibited significantly lowered charge transfer resistance due to the enhancement of its electrical conductivity and facilitation of the transfer of charged particles. The proposed biosensor successfully quantified PND in a wide concentration range of 0.01-35 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 8.0 nM. The PND monitoring capability of the fabricated biosensor in real samples including rice, wheat, tap, and river water samples was verified with a recovery range of 98.2-105.6%. Moreover, to predict the interaction sites of PND herbicide with DNA, the molecular docking study was performed between the PND molecule and two sequence DNA fragments and confirmed the experimental findings. This research sets the stage for developing highly sensitive DNA biosensors that will be used to monitor and quantify toxic herbicides in real samples by fusing the advantages of nanohybrid structures with crucial knowledge from a molecular docking investigation.

A cellulose-based material as a fluorescent sensor for Cr(VI) detection and investigation of antimicrobial properties of its encapsulated form in two different MOFs

It is crucial to detect toxic chromium ions quickly, reliably, sensitively and at low concentrations. In recent years, fluorescence-based methods have been developed for the rapid detection and determination of toxic ions such as chromium. In present work, we focused on the development of a cellulose-based fluorescent probe (Cel-Nap) for the determination of Cr(VI). The fluorescent probe bearing the 1,8-naphthalimide group displayed a low LOD of 1.07 μM for Cr(VI) in the working range of 0.33 × 10^-5-3.22 × 10^-5 M. The fluorescence and antibacterial properties of UiO-66-Cel-Nap and ZIF-8-Cel-Nap materials prepared by encapsulating Cel-Nap with 2 different MOF types (UiO-66 and ZIF-8) were investigated. While it was found that ZIF-8-based materials had better antimicrobial properties compared to those of UiO-66, it was determined that materials containing Ag⁺ were more effective against microbial than those containing AgNPs. It was found that the most effective material was ZIF-8-Cel-Nap-Ag⁺ and it had a significant antibacterial effect against E. coli at a MIC value of 0.0024 mg/mL.

Regulating defective sites for pharmaceuticals selective removal: Structure-dependent adsorption over continuously tunable pores

Developing efficient adsorbents with proper pore size for pharmaceutical removal is challenging. Water stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials within the three-dimensional frameworks, which have already aroused increasing attention for their potential advantages with high surface area and abundant channels. However, whether or not the existing ones are performing their full capacities needs to be seriously considered. Herein, we precisely designed a series of fine-tuning hierarchically porous materials based on the water-stable Zr-based MOFs. The adsorption capacity and uptake rate of as-synthesized materials for pharmaceuticals are significantly improved. Fifteen isostructural frameworks with increasing finely tuned pore structures were successfully constructed with seven monocarboxylic modulators of increasing alkyl chain lengths. A strong correlated relationship between the mesoporous proportion and trapping kinetics can be found. Adsorption performance of 17 pharmaceuticals with various typical categories has been systematically studied over these as-synthesized materials. Competitors in natural wastewater were studied systematically. The competitive adsorption can selectively trap the target compounds in HA (humic acid), BSA (bovine serum albumin), and BHB (bovine hemoglobin) by an efficient size exclusion effect. Thus, this study offers helpful guidance for MOF modification to enhance the removal of micropollutants in natural wastewater and a fundamental understanding of the porosity-performance relationships.
