Understanding Iron Impurities in Australian Kaolin and Their Effect on Acid and Heat Activation Processes of Clay

Computational and experimental assessment of efficient dye adsorption method from aqueous effluents by halloysite and palygorskite clay minerals

The removal of dyes from effluents of textile industries represents a technological challenge, due to their significant environmental impact. The application of halloysite (Hal) and palygorskite (Pal) clay minerals as adsorbents for the removal of Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) was evaluated in this work. The materials were applied both in natural and acid-treated forms, and characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM-EDS, FTIR, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm techniques to identify their properties and main active sites. The adsorbents showed potential to remove CR (> 98%) and MB (> 85%) within 180 min, using 0.3 g adsorbent and initial dye concentration of 250 mg L-1. Semi-empirical quantum mechanical calculations (SQM) confirmed the interaction mechanism between dyes and the adsorbents via chemisorption (- 69.0 kcal mol-1 < Eads <  - 28.8 kcal mol-1), which was further observed experimentally due to the high fit of adsorption data to pseudo-second order kinetic model (R2 > 0.99) and Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.98). The use of Pal and Hal to remove dyes was proven to be economically and environmentally viable for industrial application.

Synthesis of Kaolin-Supported Nickel Oxide Composites for the Catalytic Oxidative Degradation of Methylene Blue Dye

Organic dye contamination of water is a contributing factor to environmental pollution and has a negative impact on aquatic ecology. In this study, unsupported NiO and kaolin-supported NiO composites were synthesized by a one-step wet impregnation-precipitation method through the precipitation of nickel hydroxide onto locally accessible, inexpensive, and easily treated kaolin surfaces by using sodium hydroxide as a precipitating agent. The product was calcined at 500 °C and used for the catalytic oxidative degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye in an aqueous solution. The morphology, structure, and interactions of the synthesized materials were explored by SEM, XRD, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The characterization results revealed the fabrication and the growth of NiO on the kaolin surface. To determine the catalytic oxidative degradation performance of the catalyst, many experiments have been performed using the MB dye as a model dye. The catalytic degradation tests confirmed the importance of NiO and the high catalytic activity of the synthesized NiO/kaolin composite toward MB dye degradation. The oxidative degradation results showed that the optimized precursor amount on the kaolin surface could efficiently enhance the removal of MB dye. The kinetic investigation of the catalytic degradation of MB dye fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. High removal efficiency was observed after eight reuse cycles, proving the exceptional stability and reusability of the composite. The catalytic process also proceeded with a low activation energy of 30.5 kJ/mol. In conclusion, the kaolin-supported NiO composite was established to be a favorable catalyst to degrade a model dye (MB) from an aqueous solution in the presence of inexpensive and easily available NaOCl with a catalytic efficiency of the material higher than 99% of the 20.3 mg catalyst within 6 min with an apparent rate constant, kapp, higher than 0.44625 min-1, which is far better than that of the unsupported catalyst with a kapp of 0.0926 min-1 at 10 mg dose in 20 min.

Characterization and treatment effects on Mutaka kaolin for additive in coatings: Mineral composition, thermal and structural modifications

Previous studies in Uganda have primarily explored kaolin's applications in composites, pottery, bricks, and insulation, neglecting its potential for coatings and paints, which is crucial for industrialization and saving foreign exchange. This study investigates the transformation of kaolin through various treatments and analyzes their impacts on its physical and chemical properties for potential use in coating applications. Thermal analysis, X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques were employed to assess these alterations. The results show that thermal treatment of kaolin at 45.9 °C had minimal impact on mass loss, while the crystallinity of kaolinite was found to be lost around 600 °C, resulting in structural changes. XRF result demonstrates variations in SiO2 and Al2O3 composition, with low TiO2 content desirable for paint and coating applications. XRD results showed well-defined diffractions associated with kaolinite in all treated and untreated kaolin samples. The presence of K-feldspar and quartz are also identified. However, the thermal treatment at 800 °C transforms kaolinite into metakaolin, essential for enhancing coating properties. SEM-EDS results indicate increased porosity and reduced impurities in the thermal-treated sample, which might enhance the whiteness and suitability of pigment and binder dispersion in coatings. TEM images confirmed the hexagonal nature of kaolinite platelets and demonstrated the amorphous nature of kaolin nanoparticles with ammonium molybdate treatment, which led to the delamination and exfoliation of kaolinite layers, improving dispersibility. Kaolin thermally treated exhibited good crystallinity, solid growth, cubic morphology, and uniform size distribution. These findings suggest that tailored treatments can optimize kaolin's properties, making it a promising additive for high-performance coatings.
