Efficacious Sorption Capacities for Pb(II) from Contaminated Water: A Comparative Study Using Biowaste and Its Activated Carbon as Potential Adsorbents

A promising approach for the removal of hexavalent and trivalent chromium from aqueous solution using low-cost biomaterial

Heavy metal pollution is an enduring environmental challenge that calls for sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. One promising approach is to harness discarded plant biomass as a highly efficient environmental friendly adsorbents. In this context, a noteworthy study has spotlighted the employment of Euryale ferox Salisbury seed coat (E.feroxSC) for the exclusion of trivalent and hexavalent chromium ions. This study aims to transform discarded plant residue into a novel, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective alternative adsorbent, offering a compelling alternative to more expensive adsorption methods. By repurposing natural materials, we can contribute to mitigating heavy-metal pollution while promoting sustainable and economically viable solutions in environmental remediation. The effect of different parameters, i.e., chromium ions' initial concentration (5-25 mg L-1), solution pH (2-7), adsorbent dosage (0.2-2.4 g L-1), contact time (20-240 min), and temperature (298-313 K), were investigated. E.feroxSC proved highly effective, achieving 96.5% removal of Cr(III) ions at pH 6 and 97.7% removal of Cr(VI) ions at pH 2, with a maximum biosorption capacity of 18.33 mg/g for Cr(III) and 13.64 mg/g for Cr(VI), making it a promising, eco-friendly adsorbent for tackling heavy-metal pollution. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, aligning well with the Langmuir isotherm, exhibited favorable thermodynamics, and was characterized as feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic with physisorption mechanisms. The investigation revealed that E.feroxSC effectively adsorbed Cr(VI) which could be rejuvenated in a basic solution with minimal depletion in its adsorption capacity. Conversely, E.feroxSC's adsorption of Cr(III) demanded rejuvenation in an acidic milieu, exhibiting comparatively less efficient restoration.

Application of coconut shell activated carbon filter in vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland for enhanced multi-metal bioremediation and antioxidant response of Salvinia cucullate

Coconut shell activated carbon (CNSAC) was applied as a filter layer in hybrid vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland (H-VSSF-CW), in order to enhance the multi-metal removal efficiency of the constructed wetland (CW) and to reduce heavy metal accumulation on Salvinia cucullata. Treatment P + AC, (having CNSAC filter layer), showed 32, 21 and 34% more Cd, Cr, and Pb removal efficiency than treatment P (without CNSAC layer). CNSAC activated carbon adsorbed Cd and Pb and Cr by functional groups -NH, -NO2, -C-O, -OH and -CO, and significantly reduced Cd and Pb exposure to S. cucullate. Chromium adsorption by CNSAC filter layer was half (just 25% of total input) of the Cd and Pb. In treatment P, due to high Cd, Pb and Cr accumulation in S. cucullate, the antioxidant defense mechanism of the plant was collapsed and cell death was observed, which in turn has resulted reduced biomass gain (5% reduction). On the other hand, in treatment P + AC, an antioxidant defense mechanism was active in the form significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased of SOD, CAT and proline content while reduced MDA, EL, %EB and soluble sugar. So, the application of CNSAC increased the heavy metal removal efficiency of H-VSSF-CW by adsorption of a considerable share of heavy metal and hence, reduced the heavy metal load/exposure to S. cucullate.

Entrapment behaviours of trivalent and hexavalent chromium from aqueous medium using edible alkali-derived activated carbon of Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth)

The study examines the adsorption capabilities of an environmentally friendly activated carbon derived from a novel activating agent, i.e., an edible alkali prepared from black gram plant ash, for the removal of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) ions from an aqueous environment. The results of the systematic research show impressive removal efficiencies of 95.12% for Cr(III) ions and 99.6% for Cr(VI) ions. The kinetics and equilibrium data of the adsorption process confirm to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model. The thermodynamic analysis reveals the adsorption process as feasible and spontaneous across the temperature range of 298-313 K. The mechanism entails electrostatic attraction and adsorption of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) ions on oppositely charged surfaces and the participation of oxygen-containing functional groups on WHAC-BGA surface in the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). This study provides valuable insights for optimizing strategies to combat chromium contamination in water sources, offering a sustainable solution with the potential for real-world application.

Graphene oxide@Fe3O4-decorated iota-carrageenan composite for ultra-fast and highly efficient adsorption of lead (II) from water

The aggravated problem of lead pollution, especially in aquatic environments, necessitates the development of eminent adsorbents that could radically solve this environmental problem. Hence, a new composite was constructed based on iota carrageenan (i.Carr), graphene oxide (GO) and magnetite (Fe3O4) for removing noxious Pb2+ ions. The GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr composite was characterized by VSM, SEM, XPS, XRD, FTIR and Zeta potential. The removal of Pb2+ ions attained a quick equilibrium of almost 30 min with a removal efficiency reaching 93.68 %. The removal of Pb2+ was boosted significantly, in the order of GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(1:1) > GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(1:3) > GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr(3:1). Moreover, acquired experimental data fitted the pseudo 2nd order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model with a maximal monolayer adsorption capacity reached 440.05 mg/g. Notably, after five adsorption runs, the composite maintained its removal efficiency exceeding 74 %. The assumed adsorption mechanisms of Pb2+ onto GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr were complexation, precipitation, Lewis acid-base, and electrostatic attraction forces. Overall, the GO@Fe3O4-i.Carr composite elucidated the auspicious adsorbent criteria, comprising fast adsorption with high performance, ease-separation and tolerable recyclability, advising its feasible use to decontaminate water bodies from hazardous heavy metals.
