Application of Calcium Sulfate Whiskers to Cement-Based Materials: A Review

In recent years, significant attention has been paid to the use of calcium sulfate whiskers (CSWs) to enhance the performance of cement-based materials (CBM). This technology has attracted widespread interest from researchers because it enhances the performance and sustainability of CBM by modifying the crystal structure of calcium sulfate. This article summarizes the fundamental properties and preparation methods of calcium sulfate whisker materials as well as their applications in cement, potential advantages and disadvantages, and practical applications and prospects. The introduction of CSWs has been demonstrated to enhance the strength, durability, and crack resistance of CBM while also addressing concerns related to permeability and shrinkage. The application of this technology is expected to improve the quality and lifespan of buildings, reduce maintenance costs, and positively impact the environment. The use of CSWs in CBM represents a promising material innovation that offers lasting and sustainable advancement in the construction industry.

Synthesis and characterization of nano crystallite plaster of Paris prepared from waste eggshells and exploration of cytotoxicity, hemolysis and antimicrobial properties

Plaster of Paris, a well-known biomaterial, was synthesized from waste eggshells, which were chosen as an available bio-source of calcium. The produced plaster of Paris was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and SEM images along with a few crystallographic parameters such as crystallite size (Scherrer equation and different model equations), lattice parameters, crystallinity index, the volume of the unit cell, microstrain, dislocation density, growth preference, and residual stress from the XRD-sin² Ψ technique. The biomedical competency of the prepared plaster of Paris was evaluated utilizing the cytotoxicity, hemolysis, and antimicrobial activity of E. coli and S. aureus. The cytotoxicity assessment has revealed that the percentages of viable cells were 93-98% and a highly hemocompatible nature (<5%) was exerted by the sample. The plaster of Paris only revealed antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus), and no effect was noticed for Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli).

Synthesis of high surface area CaSO4·0.5H2O nanorods using calcium ethoxide as precursor

We report a novel solvothermal route for the production of bassanite (CaSO₄·0.5H₂O) nanoparticles using amorphous Ca-ethoxide as a precursor. Bassanite nanorods, 120-200 nm in length, with the highest specific surface area reported so far (54 m² g^-1) and enhanced reactivity, are obtained at 78 °C and 1 atm. Such nanoparticles may find application in several fields, including biomaterials, drug delivery, and cultural heritage conservation.

Microemulsion Synthesis of Nanosized Calcium Sulfate Hemihydrate and Its Morphology Control by Different Surfactants

Calcium sulfate hemihydrate with different structures and morphologies has a broad scope of applications. Herein, we reported a strategy for nanosized calcium sulfate through room-temperature microemulsion by using calcium carbonate and sulfuric acid. After characterizations, it was indicated that the morphology of calcium sulfate products fabricated could be changed and controlled using different surfactants TritonX-114, SDBS, and CTAB by the microemulsion method. The method demonstrated in this work would be a benefit for the synthesis of nanomaterials with special structures in the future.
