Rapid Accessible Fabrication and Engineering of Bilayered Hydrogels: Revisiting the Cross-Linking Effect on Superabsorbent Poly(acrylic acid)

Engineering the Nonmorphing Point of Actuation for Controlled Drug Release by Hydrogel Bilayer across the pH Spectrum

Hydrogel-based pH-responsive bilayer actuators exhibit bidirectional actuation due to the differences in the concentration gradient developed across the thickness, the volume expansion due to swelling, and the mechanical stiffness of the layers involved. At a pH value (point), where the sum of these factors generates moments of equal magnitudes, the moments cancel each other and result in no net actuation. This pH point is termed here as a "nonmorphing point". In this work, we present a bilayer of chitosan (CS) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) cross-linked with citric acid (CA) with tunable nonmorphing points across the pH spectrum by modulating the concentration and cross-linking density of the layers involved. The standard CS/CMC bilayer films took about 40 s to completely fold (clockwise) in 0.1 M HCl and 78 s to completely fold (anticlockwise) in 0.1 M NaOH. Generally, pH-responsive actuators are designed for targeted drug delivery to a specific site inside the body as they show bidirectional (clockwise/anticlockwise) actuation around a single nonmorphing point. The same pH-responsive system cannot be applied for drug release at another site with a different functioning pH. Thus, having a pH-responsive system with multiple nonmorphing points is highly desirable. Drug release experiments were performed with FITC and EtBr as model drugs loaded in CS and CMC layers. Moreover, the clockwise/anticlockwise actuation of the bilayer around the nonmorphing point can facilitate or inhibit the release of a drug. The clockwise actuation resulted in 55% FITC release and inhibited EtBr release to 4%; anticlockwise actuation resulted in 50% EtBr release and inhibited FITC release to 5%. We demonstrated morphing induced drug release by hydrogel bilayer films with tunable nonmorphing points across the pH spectrum.

A programmable bilayer hydrogel actuator based on the asymmetric distribution of crystalline regions

A novel strategy to fabricate bilayer hydrogel actuators based on the asymmetric distribution of crystalline regions across the bilayer structures was proposed. By employing PVA polymer chains into an alkali solvent-derived chitosan hydrogel matrix, chitosan/PVA hybrid bilayer hydrogels with both excellent responsive bending and mechanical properties were obtained as pH-controlled manipulators. In the design, the chitosan/PVA hydrogels upon treatment with freeze-thawing cycles were taken as the first monolayer, where excessive crystalline regions appeared. The original chitosan/PVA hydrogel as the second monolayer was then integrated into one bilayer device through the chemical-crosslinking of epichlorohydrin at the interface. The results showed that the resultant chitosan/PVA bilayer hydrogel actuator with a weight ratio of 3 : 1 displayed better sensitivity upon exposure to stimuli. The actuation behaviors are strongly dependent on experimental parameters such as the pH, PVA content and the chemical-crosslinking density. It is proposed that the driving force originates from the asymmetric distribution of crystalline regions, thus resulting in differential swelling ratios between the monolayers. In addition, programmable 3D shape transformations were achieved by using the bilayer hydrogel with designed 2D geometric patterns, and the tailored gripper-like hydrogel actuator can successfully capture and transport the cargo. Moreover, this actuation behavior can be erased and re-written on demand under certain conditions. Taking advantage of this universal strategy, more attractive actuators derived from synthetic or natural polymers in combination with PVA are highly expected, which can be used as smart soft robots in various fields such as manipulators, grippers, and cantilever sensors.

MoS2-Embedded, Interpenetrating Network Composite Hydrogels that Show Controlled Release of Dyes and Tunable Strength

This paper describes a conceptual design of hierarchical composite hydrogels. The hydrogel materials comprise MoS2 flakes and interpenetrating polymer networks, and further exhibit controlled release and tunable strength that are caused by the synergistic combination of select components. In terms of design, MoS2 flakes initiate radical polymerization of chosen monomers and simultaneously provide physical cross-linking points, both of which afford a primary composite network. Then, the sequential formation of additional networks results in functional, hierarchical, composite hydrogels. Therefore, we were able to demonstrate double-network hydrogels as a stimuli-responsive vector for programmed release of cargo molecules in response to heat or light or to form triple-network hydrogels showing tunable mechanical strength owing to intermolecular interaction between charged monomers and MoS2 flakes. The design concept would be expanded by incorporating other chalcogenides or functional monomers, which advance the properties and functionalities of materials and broadens the versatility of nanocomposite hydrogels.

Recent Progress on Molecular Photoacoustic Imaging with Carbon-Based Nanocomposites

For biomedical imaging, the interest in noninvasive imaging methods is ever increasing. Among many modalities, photoacoustic imaging (PAI), which is a combination of optical and ultrasound imaging techniques, has received attention because of its unique advantages such as high spatial resolution, deep penetration, and safety. Incorporation of exogenous imaging agents further amplifies the effective value of PAI, since they can deliver other specified functions in addition to imaging. For these agents, carbon-based materials can show a large specific surface area and interesting optoelectronic properties, which increase their effectiveness and have proved their potential in providing a theragnostic platform (diagnosis + therapy) that is essential for clinical use. In this review, we introduce the current state of the PAI modality, address recent progress on PAI imaging that takes advantage of carbon-based agents, and offer a future perspective on advanced PAI systems using carbon-based agents.

Exfoliation of 2D Materials for Energy and Environmental Applications

The fascinating properties of single-layer graphene isolated by mechanical exfoliation have inspired extensive research efforts toward two-dimensional (2D) materials. Layered compounds serve as precursors for atomically thin 2D materials (briefly, 2D nanomaterials) owing to their strong intraplane chemical bonding but weak interplane van der Waals interactions. There are newly emerging 2D materials beyond graphene, and it is becoming increasingly important to develop cost-effective, scalable methods for producing 2D nanomaterials with controlled microstructures and properties. The variety of developed synthetic techniques can be categorized into two classes: bottom-up and top-down approaches. Of top-down approaches, the exfoliation of bulk 2D materials into single or few layers is the most common. This review highlights chemical and physical exfoliation methods that allow for the production of 2D nanomaterials in large quantities. In addition, remarkable examples of utilizing exfoliated 2D nanomaterials in energy and environmental applications are introduced.

Multifunctional Role of MoS2 in Preparation of Composite Hydrogels: Radical Initiation and Cross-Linking

This paper describes the multifunctional effect of molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) that enables the rapid and accessible preparation of nanocomposite hydrogels via a bottom-up design. The MoS₂ nanoplatelet forms radical species through a redox reaction with persulfate under aqueous conditions while initiating the polymerization of acrylic monomers and providing noncovalent cross-linking points without requiring external stimuli or extra cross-linkers, leading to the formation of hydrogels that are in situ embedded with inorganic flakes. Furthermore, the addition of MoS₂ could induce more rigid and elastic networks compared to those in control hydrogels using a typical cross-linker at the same level; for example, 0.08 wt % MoS₂ resulted in a composite hydrogel of which the elastic modulus was 2.5 times greater than that from a hydrogel using N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide) as the showing phase transition during polymerization. The composite hydrogels are self-healable, taking advantage of reversible physical cross-links. Thus, two cut hydrogel strips could be readily rejoined by heating at 70 °C, and the resulting whole strip showed mechanical strength similar to that of the pristine sample before it was cut. This synthetic approach would give way to the modular design of MoS₂-containing composite hydrogels.

Multiple-Responsive and Amphibious Hydrogel Actuator Based on Asymmetric UCST-Type Volume Phase Transition

Thermoresponsive hydrogel actuators have attracted tremendous interest due to their promising applications in artificial muscles, soft robotics, and flexible electronics. However, most of these materials are based on polymers with lower critical solution temperature (LCST), while those from upper critical solution temperature (UCST) are rare. Herein, we report a multiple-responsive UCST hydrogel actuator based on the complex of poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) and poly(acrylamide) (PAAm). By applying a heterogeneous photopolymerization, a bilayer hydrogel was obtained, including a layer of the interpenetrating network (IPN) of PAAm/PAAc and a layer of a single network of PAAm. When cooled down below the UCST, the PAAm/PAAc layer contracted due to the hydrogen bonding of the two polymers while the PAAm layer stays in swelling state, driving the hydrogel to curl. By adjusting the composition of the two layers, the amplitude of actuation behavior could be regulated. By creating patterned IPN domains with photomasks, the hydrogel could deform into complex two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) shapes. An active motion was realized in both water and oil bath, thanks to the internal water exchange between the two layers. Interestingly, the hydrogel actuator is also responsive to urea and salts (Na₂SO₄, NaCl, NaSCN), due to that the strength of the hydrogen bonds in the IPN changes with the additives. Overall, the current study realized an anisotropic UCST transition by introducing asymmetrically distributed polymer-polymer hydrogen bonds, which would inspire new inventions of intelligent materials.

Recent Progress on Near-Infrared Photoacoustic Imaging: Imaging Modality and Organic Semiconducting Agents

Over the past few decades, the photoacoustic (PA) effect has been widely investigated, opening up diverse applications, such as photoacoustic spectroscopy, estimation of chemical energies, or point-of-care detection. Notably, photoacoustic imaging (PAI) has also been developed and has recently received considerable attention in bio-related or clinical imaging fields, as it now facilitates an imaging platform in the near-infrared (NIR) region by taking advantage of the significant advancement of exogenous imaging agents. The NIR PAI platform now paves the way for high-resolution, deep-tissue imaging, which is imperative for contemporary theragnosis, a combination of precise diagnosis and well-timed therapy. This review reports the recent progress on NIR PAI modality, as well as semiconducting contrast agents, and outlines the trend in current NIR imaging and provides further direction for the prospective development of PAI systems.

Sustainable, Naringenin-Based Thermosets Show Reversible Macroscopic Shape Changes and Enable Modular Recycling

A sustainable biobased thermoset exhibiting shape-memory behavior and modular recycling capabilities has been developed herein. The prepared thermoset consists of naringenin and biocompatible polymer components. Naringenin, which has three phenolic moieties, has been converted to a multifunctional monomer containing glycidyl groups and readily formed a thermosetting network via epoxide ring opening reaction with a poly(ethylene glycol) diacid under solvent-free conditions. The resulting material is malleable yet as strong as articular cartilage and selectively absorbs water when compared with n-dodecane oil. Moreover, the thermoset can be physically reused. After being crumpled, stretched, or coiled, the initial shape of the material is restored in response to heat or water. Furthermore, the material is amenable to chemical recycling in a bulk state via transesterification, and its components can be recovered on a molecular level after degradation under benign conditions, as was confirmed using a model compound.

Selective De-Cross-Linking of Transformable, Double-Network Hydrogels: Preparation, Structural Conversion, and Controlled Release

This study has demonstrated the design of stimuli-responsive double-network hydrogels that are formed by sequential polymerization and show chemical transformation by selective de-cross-linking without structural failure owing to chemical orthogonality. Each self-immolative and thermoresponsive network established together the double-network structure through a thiol-ene click reaction and radical polymerization. The hydrogel exhibited enhanced mechanical strength but chemically transformed through the selective de-cross-linking of specific network triggered by a molecular stimulus, which significantly alters physical properties of the material such as tunable toughness and lower critical solution temperature behavior. In addition, the material displayed a thermoresponsive, controlled release. Only after treatment with the stimulus did the hydrogel release cargo molecules on demand via de-cross-linking while maintaining the entire structure.

Biodegradable Contrast Agents for Photoacoustic Imaging

Over the past twenty years, photoacoustics—also called optoacoustics—have been widely investigated and, in particular, extensively applied in biomedical imaging as an emerging modality. Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) detects an ultrasound wave that is generated via photoexcitation and thermoelastic expansion by a short nanosecond laser pulse, which significantly reduces light and acoustic scattering, more than in other typical optical imaging and renders high-resolution tomographic images with preserving high absorption contrast with deep penetration depth. In addition, PAI provides anatomical and physiological parameters in non-invasive manner. Over the past two decades, this technique has been remarkably developed in the sense of instrumentation and contrast agent materials. In this review, we briefly introduce state-of-the-art multiscale imaging systems and summarize recent progress on exogenous bio-compatible and -degradable agents that address biomedical application and clinical practice.

Dual Salt- and Thermoresponsive Programmable Bilayer Hydrogel Actuators with Pseudo-Interpenetrating Double-Network Structures

Development of smart soft actuators is highly important for fundamental research and industrial applications but has proved to be extremely challenging. In this work, we present a facile, one-pot, one-step method to prepare dual-responsive bilayer hydrogels, consisting of a thermoresponsive poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (polyNIPAM) layer and a salt-responsive poly(3-(1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-1 H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)propane-1-sulfonate) (polyVBIPS) layer. Both polyNIPAM and polyVBIPS layers exhibit a completely opposite swelling/shrinking behavior, where polyNIPAM shrinks (swells) but polyVBIPS swells (shrinks) in salt solution (water) or at high (low) temperatures. By tuning NIPAM:VBIPS ratios, the resulting polyNIPAM/polyVBIPS bilayer hydrogels enable us to achieve fast and large-amplitude bidirectional bending in response to temperatures, salt concentrations, and salt types. Such bidirectional bending, bending orientation, and degree can be reversibly, repeatedly, and precisely controlled by salt- or temperature-induced cooperative swelling-shrinking properties from both layers. Based on their fast, reversible, and bidirectional bending behavior, we further design two conceptual hybrid hydrogel actuators, serving as a six-arm gripper to capture, transport, and release an object and an electrical circuit switch to turn on-and-off a lamp. Different from the conventional two- or multistep methods for preparation of bilayer hydrogels, our simple, one-pot, one-step method and a new bilayer hydrogel system provide an innovative concept to explore new hydrogel-based actuators through combining different responsive materials that allow us to program different stimuli for soft and intelligent materials applications.

Chemical Design of Functional Polymer Structures for Biosensors: From Nanoscale to Macroscale

Over the past decades, biosensors, a class of physicochemical detectors sensitive to biological analytes, have drawn increasing interest, particularly in light of growing concerns about human health. Functional polymeric materials have been widely researched for sensing applications because of their structural versatility and significant progress that has been made concerning their chemistry, as well as in the field of nanotechnology. Polymeric nanoparticles are conventionally used in sensing applications due to large surface area, which allows rapid and sensitive detection. On the macroscale, hydrogels are crucial materials for biosensing applications, being used in many wearable or implantable devices as a biocompatible platform. The performance of both hydrogels and nanoparticles, including sensitivity, response time, or reversibility, can be significantly altered and optimized by changing their chemical structures; this has encouraged us to overview and classify chemical design strategies. Here, we have organized this review into two main sections concerning the use of nanoparticles and hydrogels (as polymeric structures) for biosensors and described chemical approaches in relevant subcategories, which act as a guide for general synthetic strategies.
