Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is considered one of the main progressive chronic diseases in elderly individuals. Early diagnosis using related biomarkers, specifically beta-amyloid peptide (Aβ), allows finding expected treatment routes. Here, we developed an electrochemical aptasensing platform for AD by employing a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with a layer of jagged gold (JG) nanostructure (diameter: 60-185 nm) and graphene oxide-carboxylic acid functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (GO-c-MWCNTs) nanocomposite. These surface modifications acted as the signal amplifier and provided an optimum nano-interface substrate for immobilizing aptamer strands. The measurements of Aβ were performed via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and the aptasensor detected the analyte in a linear range from 0.1 pg mL-1 to 1 ng mL-1, with an estimated limit of detection (LOD) of about 0.088 pg mL-1 (S/N = 3). The aptasensor showed sufficient stability (11 days), reversibility (three times), and reproducibility (five times re-fabrication with relative standard deviation (RSD): 1.27). The potential interfering agents showed negligible impact on the sensing performance. Finally, the application of the aptasensor was evaluated in the presence of 10 serum samples, and the recovery values were from 93 to 110.1%.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of polydopamine (PDA), PDA/polyethylenimine (PEI), and PDA/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) deposition on silver nanoparticle (AgNP) formation. PEI or PEG with different molecular weights was mixed with dopamine at different concentrations to obtain various PDA/PEI or PDA/PEG codepositions. These codepositions were soaked in silver nitrate solution to observe AgNPs generated on the surface and then to examine the catalytic activity of AgNPs for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. Results revealed that AgNPs on PDA/PEI or PDA/PEG codepositions were smaller and more dispersed than those on PDA coatings. Codeposition with 0.5 mg/mL polymer and 2 mg/mL dopamine generated the smallest AgNPs in each codeposition system. The content of AgNPs on PDA/PEI codeposition first increased and then decreased with an increase in the PEI concentration. PEI with a molecular weight of 600 (PEI600) generated a higher AgNP content than did PEI with a molecular weight of 10000. The AgNP content did not change with the concentration and molecular weight of PEG. Except for the codeposition with 0.5 mg/mL PEI600, codepositions produced less silver than did the PDA coating. The catalytic activity of AgNPs on all codepositions was better than that on PDA. The catalytic activity of AgNPs on all codepositions was related to the size of AgNPs. Smaller AgNPs exhibited more satisfactory catalytic activity. The codeposition with 0.5 mg/mL PEI600 had the highest rate constant (1.64 min-1). The systematic study provides insight into the relationship between various codepositions and AgNP generation and demonstrates that the composition of these codepositions can be tuned to increase their applicability.

Abstract
Ni nanotubes (NTs) were produced by the template method in the pores of ion-track membranes and then were successfully functionalized with gold nanoparticles (Ni@Au NTs) using electroless wet-chemical deposition with the aim to demonstrate their high catalytic activity. The fabricated NTs were characterized using a variety of techniques in order to determine their morphology and dimensions, crystalline structure, and magnetic properties. The morphology of Au coating depended on the concentration of gold chloride aqueous solution used for Au deposition. The catalytic activity was evaluated by a model reaction of the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by borohydride ions in the presence of Ni and Ni@Au NTs. The reaction was monitored spectrophotometrically in real time by detecting the decrease in the absorption peaks. It was found that gold coating with needle-like structure formed at a higher Au-ions concentration had the strongest catalytic effect, while bare Ni NTs had little effect. The presence of a magnetic core allowed the extraction of the catalyst with the help of a magnetic field for reusable applications.

Abstract
In this study, a polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI)-assisted approach was developed to generate well-distributed PDA/PEI/silver (PDA/PEI/Ag) nanocomplexes on the surfaces of commercial cellulose filter papers to achieve substantial bacterial reduction under gravity-driven filtration. PDA can bind to cellulose paper and act as a reducer to produce silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), while PEI can react with oxidative dopamine and act as a dispersant to avoid the aggregation of AgNPs. The successful immobilization of PDA/PEI/Ag nanocomplexes was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were used as pathogen models to test the efficacy of the PDA/PEI/Ag nanocomplex-incorporated filter papers. The PDA/PEI/Ag nanocomplex-incorporated filter papers provided a substantial bacterial removal of up to 99% by simple gravity filtration. This work may be useful to develop a feasible industrial production process for the integration of biocidal AgNPs into cellulose filter paper and is recommended as a local-condition water-treatment technology to treat microbial-contaminated drinking water.

Abstract
Multidisciplinary efforts in the field of nanomedicine for cancer therapy to provide solutions to common limitations of traditional drug administration such as poor bioaccumulation, hydrophobicity, and nonspecific biodistribution and targeting have registered very promising progress thus far. Currently, a new class of metal nanostructures possessing a unique dendritic-shaped morphology has been designed for improved therapeutic efficiency. Branched metal nanoparticles or metal nanodendrites are credited to present promising characteristics for biomedical applications owing to their unique physicochemical, optical, and electronic properties. Nanodendrites can enhance the loading efficiency of bioactive molecules due to their three-dimensional (3D) high surface area and can selectively deliver their cargo to tumor cells using their stimuli-responsive properties. With the ability to accumulate sufficiently within cells, nanodendrites can overcome the detection and clearance by glycoproteins. Moreover, active targeting ligands such as antibodies and proteins can as well be attached to these therapeutic nanodendrites to enhance specific tumor targeting, thereby presenting a multifunctional nanoplatform with tunable strategies. This mini-review focuses on recent developments in the understanding of metallic nanodendrite synthesis, formation mechanism, and their therapeutic capabilities for next-generation cancer therapy. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities of these fascinating materials to facilitate extensive research endeavors towards the design and application were discussed.

Abstract
Metal recovery from electronic waste and industrial wastewater has attracted increasing attention to recycle precious metals and inhibit the emission of hazardous heavy metals. However, the selective recovery of precious metals with a large quantity is still very challenging because wastewater contains a variety of different cations while precious metal ions are relatively scarce. Here, we introduce a simple method to selectively increase the adsorption of gold ions using tannin-coated porous polymer microspheres through photochemical reduction. Mesoporous poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate- co-acrylonitrile) microspheres with an average pore diameter of 13.8 nm were synthesized and used as an adsorbent matrix. Tannic acid (TA) was deposited onto the internal pores of the polymer matrix by simple immersion in an aqueous milieu. TA coatings increased the maximum number of adsorbed gold ions by 1.3 times because of the well-known metal ion chelation of TA. Under light illumination, the maximum number of adsorbed gold ions dramatically increased by 6.1 times. We examined two distinct mechanisms presumably involved in the enhanced adsorption: the photooxidation of TA and plasmon-induced hot electrons. Moreover, TA-coated microspheres exhibited remarkable selectivity for gold ions among competing metal ions commonly found in waste resources. This work suggests that the photochemically activated TA can serve as an excellent adsorbent for the selective and efficient recovery of gold ions from wastewater.
