Transparent Hydrophobic Hybrid Silica Films by Green and Chemical Surfactants

Cellulose Fabrics Functionalized with Sol-Gel Photocatalytic Coatings Based on Iron (III) Phthalocyanine Tetracarboxylic Acids-TiO2-Silica Hybrids

Photocatalytic coatings are difficult to obtain on textile materials because of the sometimes contradictory properties that must be achieved. In order to obtain a high efficiency of a photocatalytic effect, the metal-oxide semiconductor must be found in the vicinity of the coating-air interface in order to come into direct contact with the contaminant species and allow light radiation access to its surface. Another necessary condition is related to the properties of the covering textile material as well as to the stability of the xerogel films to light and wet treatments. In this sense, we proposed a solution based on hybrid silica films generated by sol-gel processes, coatings that contain as a photocatalyst TiO2 sensitized with tetracarboxylic acid of iron (III) phthalocyanine (FeTCPc). The coatings were made by the pad-dry-cure process, using in the composition a bifunctional anchoring agent (3-glycidoxipropyltrimethoxysilane, GLYMO), a crosslinking agent (sodium tetraborate, BORAX), and a catalyst (N-methylimidazole, MIM) for the polymerization of epoxy groups. The photodegradation experiments performed on methylene blue (MB), utilized as a model contaminant, using LED or xenon arc as light sources, showed that the treatment with BORAX improves the resistance of the coatings to wet treatments but worsens their photocatalytic performances.

Alkyl Silica Hybrid Nanowire Assembly in Improved Superhydrophobic Membranes for RO Filtration

Alkyl silica membranes and wires were synthesized by a sol-gel method, which has the capacity to control the size of the particles or membranes by controlling the reactions. Trimethoxyoctylsilane (C₈TMOS) was used as a chemical surfactant; poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as an emulsifier, dissolved in butanol for emulsion; and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor and a source of silica. An assembly of silica wires was fabricated on glass and cotton substrates by the dip-coating technique. Porous membranes and silica wires were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The contact angles of all of the samples were in the range of 140-154° as measured by ImageJ software, which confirmed the hydrophobic nature of the samples. The contact angle was increased by increasing the amount of the surfactant. Phase changes of silica wires and membranes were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. Chemical bonds of the sample were studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The band gap of silica nanowires was measured to be 3.8-3.4 eV using the UV-visible spectrum and decreased as compared to that of bulk silica. These silica-based porous membranes with enhanced transport properties can be used in filtration and separation techniques. This fabricated hybrid silica membrane showed ∼96% salt rejection within a permeation flux of 3.04 L/m² h.

Hybrid paper sheets with improved barrier properties

Hybrid paper sheets were prepared by applying a thin coating layer of cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and inorganic particles onto Whatman Grade 1 filter paper substrates. Several coatings with different inorganic particle contents and types were applied onto the paper substrates to investigate the effect of the variation in the coating formulation on the (i) wetting, (ii) water barrier properties, (iii) air barrier properties, (iv) surface roughness, and (v) mechanical properties of the samples. It was revealed that the superhydrophobic hybrid paper sheets with significantly low air permeability and high water barrier properties could be prepared which is an indication that the method proposed can be used for the preparation of packaging materials.

Preparation and Characterization of Some Sol-Gel Modified Silica Coatings Deposited on Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Substrates

Transparent and antireflective coatings were prepared by deposition of modified silica materials onto polyvinyl chloride (PVC) substrates. These materials were obtained by the sol-gel route in acidic medium, at room temperature (25 °C), using different alkoxysilanes with various functional groups (methyl, vinyl, octyl or hexadecyl). Physicochemical and microstructural properties of resulted silica materials and of thin coatings were investigated through Fourier Transforms Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Vis spectroscopy, Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and ellipsometric measurements. Wetting behaviors of the silica coatings were evaluated by measurement of static contact angle against water. FTIR spectra of materials confirmed the high degree of cross-linking that result from the formation of the inorganic backbone through the hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions together with the formation of the organic network. These sol-gel silica coatings showed a reduction in the reflectance (10%) compared with uncoated PVC substrate. AFM reveals that the films are uniform, and adherent to the substrate, but their morphology is strongly influenced by the chemical composition of the coating matrices. These silica coatings can be useful for potential electronic and optical devices.
