Work Function Lowering of Graphite by Sequential Surface Modifications: Nitrogen and Hydrogen Plasma Treatment

A back-to-back diode model applied to van der Waals Schottky diodes

The use of metal and semimetal van der Waals contacts for 2D semiconducting devices has led to remarkable device optimizations. In comparison with conventional thin-film metal deposition, a reduction in Fermi level pinning at the contact interface for van der Waals contacts results in, generally, lower contact resistances and higher mobilities. Van der Waals contacts also lead to Schottky barriers that follow the Schottky-Mott rule, allowing barrier estimates on material properties alone. In this study, we present a double Schottky barrier model and apply it to a barrier tunable all van der Waals transistor. In a molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) transistor with graphene and few-layer graphene contacts, we find that the model can be applied to extract Schottky barrier heights that agree with the Schottky-Mott rule from simple two-terminal current-voltage measurements at room temperature. Furthermore, we show tunability of the Schottky barrierin-situusing a regional contact gate. Our results highlight the utility of a basic back-to-back diode model in extracting device characteristics in all van der Waals transistors.

Sorption of Soil Carbon Dioxide by Biochar and Engineered Porous Carbons

CO2 is 45 to 50 times more concentrated in soil than in air, resulting in global diffusive fluxes that outpace fossil fuel combustion by an order of magnitude. Despite the scale of soil CO2 emissions, soil-based climate change mitigation strategies are underdeveloped. Existing approaches, such as enhanced weathering and sustainable land management, show promise but continue to face deployment barriers. We introduce an alternative approach: the use of solid adsorbents to directly capture CO2 in soils. Biomass-derived adsorbents could exploit favorable soil CO2 adsorption thermodynamics while also sequestering solid carbon. Despite this potential, previous study of porous carbon CO2 adsorption is mostly limited to single-component measurements and conditions irrelevant to soil. Here, we probe sorption under simplified soil conditions (0.2 to 3% CO2 in balance air at ambient temperature and pressure) and provide physical and chemical characterization data to correlate material properties to sorption performance. We show that minimally engineered pyrogenic carbons exhibit CO2 sorption capacities comparable to or greater than those of advanced sorbent materials. Compared to textural features, sorbent carbon bond morphology substantially influences low-pressure CO2 adsorption. Our findings enhance understanding of gas adsorption on porous carbons and inform the development of effective soil-based climate change mitigation approaches.

Stacking of a Cofacially Stacked Iron Phthalocyanine Dimer on Graphite Achieved High Catalytic CH4 Oxidation Activity Comparable to That of pMMO

Numerous biomimetic molecular catalysts inspired by methane monooxygenases (MMOs) that utilize iron or copper-oxo species as key intermediates have been developed. However, the catalytic methane oxidation activities of biomimetic molecule-based catalysts are still much lower than those of MMOs. Herein, we report that the close stacking of a μ-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer onto a graphite surface is effective in achieving high catalytic methane oxidation activity. The activity is almost 50 times higher than that of other potent molecule-based methane oxidation catalysts and comparable to those of certain MMOs, in an aqueous solution containing H₂O₂. It was demonstrated that the graphite-supported μ-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer oxidized methane, even at room temperature. Electrochemical investigation and density functional theory calculations suggested that the stacking of the catalyst onto graphite induced partial charge transfer from the reactive oxo species of the μ-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer and significantly lowered the singly occupied molecular orbital level, thereby facilitating electron transfer from methane to the catalyst in the proton-coupled electron-transfer process. The cofacially stacked structure is advantageous for stable adhesion of the catalyst molecule on the graphite surface in the oxidative reaction condition and for preventing decreases in the oxo-basicity and generation rate of the terminal iron-oxo species. We also demonstrated that the graphite-supported catalyst exhibited appreciably enhanced activity under photoirradiation owing to the photothermal effect.

Pyridinic-Type N-Doped Graphene on Cobalt Substrate as Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Acidic Solution in Fuel Cell

In this study, we use density functional theory to investigate the catalytic activity of graphene (G), single vacancy defective graphene (G_SV), quaternary N-doped graphene (NG_Q), and pyridinic N-doped graphene (NG_py, 3NG_py, and 4NG_py) on Co(0001) substrate for an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The results show pyridinic N-doped graphene on a Co support exhibited better performance than the NG_Q on a Co support and free-standing systems. According to the results, ORR intermediates (*OOH, *O, and *OH) become more stable due to the presence of a Co substrate. The single pyridinic (3NG_py) layer placed on Co(0001) is the most active site. The overpotential for Co/3NG_py is rather higher compared to pure Pt(111) catalyst (0.65 V). Therefore, pyridinic N-doped graphene with a cobalt support could be a promising strategy to enhance the ORR activity of N-doped graphene in PEMFCs.
