Passively Broadband Tunable Dual Circular Dichroism via Bound States in the Continuum in Topological Chiral Metasurface

Dynamic control for a strong circular dichroism (CD) response is essential in engineering applications such as polarization manipulation, sensing, and imaging. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a broadband tunable dual CD response via bound states in the continuum (BICs) in two-dimensional topologically protected metasurfaces composed of all-dielectric Si chiral grating structures that generate a pair of mixed and degenerated BIC mode and circular dichroic mode (CDM) as an additional degree of freedom in CD manipulation. It is found that a singular CD peak of nearly 100% at 1.6 μm can be achieved by CDM when BIC is hidden under normal incidence, while the CD peak can be split into two in which peak wavelengths can be precisely and linearly tuned over a bandwidth of 180 nm by the incident angle when the BIC mode is excited under oblique incidence. Additionally, dynamic modulation of output polarization states from linear to circular can be arbitrarily achieved at the split CD peaks by controlling the incident angle when asymmetry perturbations on chiral gratings are introduced due to the decoupling of various polarization states at Γ point by BIC to different positions in K space. The proposed chiral grating metasurface exhibits unique angle-sensitive tunable CD spectral characteristics, making it ideal for hyperspectral and spin-selective wavefront shaping, and holds significant promise in various applications such as optical security, angle sensors, chiral lasers, nonlinear filters, and other active chiral optical devices.

Chirality tuning and reversing with resonant phase-change metasurfaces

Dynamic control of circular dichroism in photonic structures is critically important for compact spectrometers, stereoscopic displays, and information processing exploiting multiple degrees of freedom. Metasurfaces can help miniaturize chiral devices but only produce static and limited chiral responses. While external stimuli can tune resonances, their modulations are often weak, and reversing continuously the sign of circular dichroism is extremely challenging. Here, we demonstrate the dynamically tunable chiral response of resonant metasurfaces supporting chiral bound states in the continuum combining them with phase-change materials. Phase transition between amorphous and crystalline phases allows for control of chiral response and varies chirality rapidly from -0.947 to +0.958 backward and forward via the chirality continuum. Our demonstrations underpin the rapid development of chiral photonics and its applications.

Review: tunable nanophotonic metastructures

Tunable nanophotonic metastructures offer new capabilities in computing, networking, and imaging by providing reconfigurability in computer interconnect topologies, new optical information processing capabilities, optical network switching, and image processing. Depending on the materials and the nanostructures employed in the nanophotonic metastructure devices, various tuning mechanisms can be employed. They include thermo-optical, electro-optical (e.g. Pockels and Kerr effects), magneto-optical, ionic-optical, piezo-optical, mechano-optical (deformation in MEMS or NEMS), and phase-change mechanisms. Such mechanisms can alter the real and/or imaginary parts of the optical susceptibility tensors, leading to tuning of the optical characteristics. In particular, tunable nanophotonic metastructures with relatively large tuning strengths (e.g. large changes in the refractive index) can lead to particularly useful device applications. This paper reviews various tunable nanophotonic metastructures' tuning mechanisms, tuning characteristics, tuning speeds, and non-volatility. Among the reviewed tunable nanophotonic metastructures, some of the phase-change-mechanisms offer relatively large index change magnitude while offering non-volatility. In particular, Ge-Sb-Se-Te (GSST) and vanadium dioxide (VO2) materials are popular for this reason. Mechanically tunable nanophotonic metastructures offer relatively small changes in the optical losses while offering large index changes. Electro-optically tunable nanophotonic metastructures offer relatively fast tuning speeds while achieving relatively small index changes. Thermo-optically tunable nanophotonic metastructures offer nearly zero changes in optical losses while realizing modest changes in optical index at the expense of relatively large power consumption. Magneto-optically tunable nanophotonic metastructures offer non-reciprocal optical index changes that can be induced by changing the magnetic field strengths or directions. Tunable nanophotonic metastructures can find a very wide range of applications including imaging, computing, communications, and sensing. Practical commercial deployments of these technologies will require scalable, repeatable, and high-yield manufacturing. Most of these technology demonstrations required specialized nanofabrication tools such as e-beam lithography on relatively small fractional areas of semiconductor wafers, however, with advanced CMOS fabrication and heterogeneous integration techniques deployed for photonics, scalable and practical wafer-scale fabrication of tunable nanophotonic metastructures should be on the horizon, driven by strong interests from multiple application areas.

Research Progress in Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy: From Performance Optimization, Sensing Applications, to System Integration

Infrared absorption spectroscopy is an effective tool for the detection and identification of molecules. However, its application is limited by the low infrared absorption cross-section of the molecule, resulting in low sensitivity and a poor signal-to-noise ratio. Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy is a breakthrough technique that exploits the field-enhancing properties of periodic nanostructures to amplify the vibrational signals of trace molecules. The fascinating properties of SEIRA technology have aroused great interest, driving diverse sensing applications. In this review, we first discuss three ways for SEIRA performance optimization, including material selection, sensitivity enhancement, and bandwidth improvement. Subsequently, we discuss the potential applications of SEIRA technology in fields such as biomedicine and environmental monitoring. In recent years, we have ushered in a new era characterized by the Internet of Things, sensor networks, and wearable devices. These new demands spurred the pursuit of miniaturized and consolidated infrared spectroscopy systems and chips. In addition, the rise of machine learning has injected new vitality into SEIRA, bringing smart device design and data analysis to the foreground. The final section of this review explores the anticipated trajectory that SEIRA technology might take, highlighting future trends and possibilities.

Angular Control of Circularly Polarized Emission from Achiral Molecules via Magnetic Dipoles Sustained in a Chiral Metamirror

Circularly polarized emission (CPE) plays an important role in the designs of advanced displays and photonic integrated circuits. Unfortunately, the control of CPE handedness is limited by the chiral metasurfaces employed to emit chiral light. Particularly, the switching of the handedness with chiral metasurfaces relies on flipping the metasurfaces, which adds some constraints to practical applications. Herein, we propose an angle-sensitive chiral metamirror with Mie resonators to realize handedness switching. The Mie resonator supports a magnetic dipole having large field enhancement. This chiral metamirror is applied to excite CPEs with opposite handedness at emission angles within 10°. In contrast to the conventional methods, this work proposes a more efficient approach to manipulate the handedness of CPE.

Electromechanically reconfigurable plasmonic photodetector with a distinct shift in resonant wavelength

Plasmonic photodetectors have received increasing attention because their detection properties can be designed by tailoring their metal structures on surfaces without using any additional components. Reconfiguration of the plasmonic resonant state in a photodetector is relevant for various applications, including investigating in situ adaptive detection property changes, depending on the situation, and performing single-pixel spectroscopy in geometrically limited regions. However, the spectral responsivity change with conventional reconfiguration methods is relatively small. Here, we propose a plasmonic photodetector that reconfigures its spectral responsivity with electromechanical deformation instead of bias tuning. The photodetector consists of a gold plasmonic grating formed on an n-type silicon cantilever, and the spectral responsivity is reconfigured by electromechanically scanning at an incident angle to the grating on the cantilever. The photodetector exhibits peak shifts in spectral responsivity in a wavelength range from 1250 to 1310 nm after electromechanical reconfiguration. Finally, for potential future applications, we demonstrate near-infrared spectroscopy using the photodetector. This photodetector has the potential to be adopted as a near-infrared spectrometer in industrial silicon imaging systems because its structure enables subbandgap photodetection on silicon by a Schottky junction.

Angle-selective chiral absorption induced by diffractive coupling in metasurfaces

Here we report that a simple chiral metasurface with twisted metallic cut-wire arrays enables highly efficient and continuously tunable chiral absorption over a broad spectral range by scanning the incidence angle over a few degrees. The angle-selective chiral absorption results from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excited by diffractive effects of the metasurface. The diffraction-assisted chiral metasurface provides a straightforward strategy for achieving dynamically tunable chiral devices and offers intriguing possibilities for various applications in on-chip chiral detectors/emitters, chiral spectrometers, chiral lasers, and so on.

High-efficiency modulation of broadband polarization conversion with a reconfigurable chiral metasurface

We demonstrate an electrically biased reconfigurable chiral metasurface for controlling the polarization conversion and asymmetric transmission in a broadband manner. The reconfigurable metasurface is constructed with coupled three-layer complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) arrays and is loaded with tunable electronic components to achieve dynamic control of reconfigurable chiral coupling in the CSRRs by simply tuning the external voltage on the structure. It is found that the polarization conversion in the metasurface can be effectively and continuously tuned in both experiments and simulations in a broadband frequency range. Meanwhile, the reconfigurable metasurface shows an asymmetric transmission (AT) effect in a broadband range for a polarized wave. The proposed reconfigurable chiral metasurface based on the active tuning of connection in the meta-structure with few functional layers is confirmed as an effective strategy for multi-functional polarization manipulation. The reported broadband properties of the chiral metasurface are promising for polarization manipulation in optical bands and applications in wireless communication.

Nano-electromechanical spatial light modulator enabled by asymmetric resonant dielectric metasurfaces

Spatial light modulators (SLMs) play essential roles in various free-space optical technologies, offering spatio-temporal control of amplitude, phase, or polarization of light. Beyond conventional SLMs based on liquid crystals or microelectromechanical systems, active metasurfaces are considered as promising SLM platforms because they could simultaneously provide high-speed and small pixel size. However, the active metasurfaces reported so far have achieved either limited phase modulation or low efficiency. Here, we propose nano-electromechanically tunable asymmetric dielectric metasurfaces as a platform for reflective SLMs. Exploiting the strong asymmetric radiation of perturbed high-order Mie resonances, the metasurfaces experimentally achieve a phase-shift close to 290^∘, over 50% reflectivity, and a wavelength-scale pixel size. Electrical control of diffraction patterns is also achieved by displacing the Mie resonators using nano-electro-mechanical forces. This work paves the ways for future exploration of the asymmetric metasurfaces and for their application to the next-generation SLMs.

This work experimentally demonstrates nano-electromechanically tunable asymmetric dielectric metasurfaces. The metasurfaces enable large phase tuning, high reflection, a wavelength-scale pixel size, and electrical control of diffraction patterns.

Circular dichroic metasurface based on a "double L" structure

Based on the theory of circular polarization dichroism in electromagnetic fields, this paper studies the circular dichroism (CD) characteristics of metasurfaces. Using a stable silicon material, an innovative "double L-shaped" composite structure formed by two L crosses is proposed to improve CD. Under a wide spectrum with wavelengths of 1000-1500 nm, the left circularly polarized (LCP) and right circularly polarized (RCP) lights pass through the structure, and we study the influence of different structural parameters on the CD, in order to obtain the best structural parameters. These realize the cross polarization of left-right circularly polarized light. In addition, at the wavelength of 1302.63 nm, the LCP light illuminates the structure, which realizes the cross polarization of LCP light; that is, the structure realizes the function of a half-wave plate. The RCP light incident structure realizes the function of a filter. It has great application prospects in biological detection, half-wave plates, filters, and other fields.
