Application of Fluorescence-Based Probes for the Determination of Superoxide in Water Treated with Air Non-thermal Plasma

Evidence for Superoxide-Initiated Oxidation of Aniline in Water by Pulsed, Atmospheric Pressure Plasma

Plasma-driven solution electrochemistry (PDSE) uses plasma-generated reactive species to drive redox reactions in solution. Nonthermal, atmospheric pressure plasmas, when irradiating water, produce many redox species. While PDSE is a promising chemical tool, there is limited insight into the mechanisms of the reactions due to the variety of short-lived reagents produced. In this study, we use aniline as a model system for studying redox mechanisms of PDSE. We show that the plasma irradiation of aqueous aniline solutions drives the formation of polyaniline oligomer, which is suppressed under acidic starting conditions. The addition of (2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO), a radical scavenger, decreases the formation of oligomer by 80%, and the addition of superoxide dismutase fully hinders oligomerization. These results lead us to conclude that the oligomerization of aniline by plasma irradiation is initiated by superoxide. This discovery provides novel insights into PDSE mechanisms and illustrates a potential method of harnessing superoxide for chemical reactions.

Recent advances in catalyst design, performance, and challenges of metal-heteroatom-co-doped biochar as peroxymonosulfate activator for environmental remediation

The escalation of global water pollution due to emerging pollutants has gained significant attention. To address this issue, catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation technology has emerged as a promising treatment approach for effectively decontaminating a wide range of pollutants. Recently, modified biochar has become an increasingly attractive as PMS activator. Metal-heteroatom-co-doped biochar (MH-BC) has emerged as a promising catalyst that can provide enhanced performance over heteroatom-doped and metal-doped biochar due to the synergism between metal and heteroatom in promoting PMS activation. Therefore, this review aims to discuss the fabrication pathways (i.e., internal vs external doping and pre-vs post-modification) and key parameters (i.e., source of precursors, synthesis methods, and synthesis conditions) affecting the performance of MH-BC as PMS activator. Subsequently, an overview of all the possible PMS activation pathways by MH-BC is provided. Subsequently, Also, the detection, identification, and quantification of several reactive species (such as, •OH, SO4•-, O2•-, 1O2, and high valent oxo species) generated in the catalytic PMS system by MH-BC are also evaluated. Lastly, the underlying challenges associated with poor stability, the lack of understanding regarding the interaction between metal and heteroatom during PMS activation and quantification of radicals in multi-ROS system are also deliberated.

Efficient degradation of the refractory organic pollutant by underwater bubbling pulsed discharge plasma: performance, degradation pathway, and toxicity prediction

It is essential to develop an efficient technology for the elimination of refractory contaminants due to their high toxicity. In this study, a novel underwater bubbling pulsed discharge plasma (UBPDP) system was proposed for the degradation of Orange II (OII). The degradation performance experiments showed that by enhancing the peak voltage and pulse frequency, the degradation efficiency of OII increased gradually. The removal efficiencies under different air flow rates were close. Reducing OII concentration and solution conductivity could promote the elimination of OII. Compared with neutral and alkaline conditions, acidic condition was more beneficial to OII degradation. The active species including ·OH, ·O2-, 1O2, and hydrated electrons were all involved in OII degradation. The concentrations of O3 and H2O2 in OII solution were lower than those in deionized water. During discharge, the solution pH increased while conductivity decreased. The variation of UV-vis spectra with treatment time indicated the effective decomposition of OII. Possible degradation pathways were speculated based on LC-MS. The toxicity of intermediate products was predicted by the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool. Coexisting constituents including Cl-, SO42-, HCO3-, and humic acid had a negative effect on OII removal. Finally, the comparison with other technology depicted the advantage of the UBPDP system.

Direct Sensing of Superoxide and Its Relatives Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species in Phosphate Buffers during Cold Atmospheric Plasmas Exposures

This study aims at sensing in situ reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) and specifically superoxide anion (O₂^•-) in aqueous buffer solutions exposed to cold atmospheric plasmas (CAPs). CAPs were generated by ionizing He gas shielded with variable N₂/O₂ mixtures. Thanks to ultramicroelectrodes protected against the high electric fields transported by the ionization waves of CAPs, the production of superoxide and several RONS was electrochemically directly detected in liquids during their plasma exposure. Complementarily, optical emissive spectroscopy (OES) was used to study the plasma phase composition and its correlation with the chemistry in the exposed liquid. The specific production of O₂^•-, a biologically reactive redox species, was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), in both alkaline (pH 11), where the species is fairly stable, and physiological (pH 7.4) conditions, where it is unstable. To understand its generation with respect to the plasma chemistry, we varied the shielding gas composition of CAPs to directly impact on the RONS composition at the plasma-liquid interface. We observed that the production and accumulation of RONS in liquids, including O₂^•-, depends on the plasma composition, with N₂-based shieldings providing the highest superoxide concentrations (few 10s of micromolar at most) and of its derivatives (hundreds of micromolar). In situ spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses provide a high resolution kinetic and quantitative understanding of the interactions between CAPs and physiological solutions for biomedical applications.

Quantification of Plasma-Produced Hydroxyl Radicals in Solution and their Dependence on the pH

HO radicals are the most important reactive species generated during water treatment by non-thermal plasma devices. In this letter, we report the first quantification of the steady-state concentration and lifetime of plasma-produced hydroxyl radicals in water solutions at pH 3 and 7, and we discuss the differences based on their reactivity with other plasma-generated species. Finally, we show to what extent the use of chemical probes to quantify short-lived reactive species has an influence on the results and that it should be taken into account.
