Abstract
The need for the sensing of environmental pollutants cannot be overemphasized in the twenty-first century. Herein, a sensor has been developed for the sensitive and selective detection of copper (Cu2+), lead (Pb2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) as major heavy metals polluting water environment. A screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified by fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was successfully fabricated for sensing Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were deployed for the analysis of ternary analytes. CV was set at a potential range of - 0.8 to + 0.2 V at a scan rate of 100 mV/s, and DPV at a potential range of - 0.8 to + 0.1 V, scan rate of 50 mV/s, pulse rate of 0.2 V and pulse width of 50 ms. DPV technique was applied through the modified electrode for sensitive and selective determination of Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+ at a concentration range of 0.01 to 0.27 ppm for Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+. Tolerance for the highest possible concentration of foreign substances such as Mg2+, K+, Na+, NO3-, and SO42- was observed with a relative error less than ± 3%. The sensitivity of the modified electrode was at 0.17, 0.42 and 0.18 ppm for Cd2+, Pb2+ and Cu2+, respectively, while the limits of detection (LOD) achieved for cadmium, lead and copper were 0.0028, 0.0042 and 0.014 ppm, respectively. The quality of the modified electrode for sensing Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+ at trace levels is in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water regulation standard. The modified SPCE provides a cost-effective, dependable and stable means of detecting heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+) in an aqueous solution. Graphical abstract .

Abstract
Production and application of graphene oxide (GO) and biochar for water and soil treatment is steadily growing, driving the necessity to understand the cotransport behavior of contaminants and GO nanoparticles in porous media and the possible effect of biochar to reduce their cotransport. The cotransport of GO nanoparticles and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) as a model in a sand column and biochar-amended sand column (biochar column) was compared. The transport of DMP in the test columns was independent of the solution ionic strength (IS), while the transport of GO decreased with increased IS due to the enhanced aggregation of GO nanoparticles. The sand column had no retention capacity (less than 1%) for DMP, while the biochar column had significantly increased retention of DMP (100%). The retention of GO in the biochar column was significantly higher than that of the sand column because biochar can improve the roughness of the media and adsorb GO via π-π interactions. Under low-IS conditions, GO facilitated DMP transport by providing vehicles and adsorption sites (vehicle effect). Due to reversible adsorption-desorption, the adsorbed DMP on GO could be released, resulting in tailing during the flushing phase. The vehicle effect of GO on DMP transport was significantly weakened in the biochar columns, and DMP tailing during the flushing phase was not observed in the biochar columns, which was attributed to the strong retention/adsorption of the biochar columns for both GO and DMP, higher affinity of DMP on biochar than GO, and desorption hysteresis of DMP on biochar. These observations are important for evaluating the potential role of biochar in soil and water remediation, as well as mitigating the health risks of GO and organic contaminants in the environment.

Abstract
Interfacial charge transfer between a semiconductor nanocrystal and a molecular relay is an important step in nanomaterial photocatalysis. The ferrocene redox couple (Fc+/Fc0, E0 = -4.9 eV vs vacuum) has now been used as a model redox relay system to investigate photocatalytic properties of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals. The photocatalytic reduction of ferrocenium (Fc+) to ferrocene (Fc0) with CsPbBr3 nanocrystals was dictated by the surface interactions. Whereas a rapid quenching and subsequent recovery of CsPbBr3 emission is seen at low Fc+ concentrations, the quenched emission was sustained at higher Fc+ concentrations. The photoinduced interfacial electron transfer between CsPbBr3 and ferrocenium (Fc+) studied using transient absorption spectroscopy occurred with a rate constant of 1.64 × 1010 s-1. Better understanding of interfacial processes using redox probes can lead to the improvement in photocatalytic performance of perovskite nanocrystals.

Abstract
Expanded few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets (FL-BP NSs) were functionalized by branched polyethylenimine (PEI) using a simple noncovalent assembly to form air-stable overlayers (BP-PEI), and a Co3O4@BP-PEI composite was designed and synthesized using a hydrothermal method. The size of the highly dispersed Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on the FL-BP NSs can be controlled. The BP-C5 (190 °C for 5 h) sensor, with 4-6 nm Co3O4 NPs on the FL-BP NSs, exhibited an ultrahigh sensitivity of 8.38 and a fast response of 0.67 s to 100 ppm of NO x at room temperature in air, which is 4 times faster than the response of the FL-BP NS sensor, and the lower detection limit reached 10 ppb. This study points to a promising method for tuning properties of BP-based composites by forming air-stable overlayers and highly dispersed metal oxide NPs for use in high-performance gas sensors.

Abstract
Graphene nanocomposites have attracted much attention in many applications due to their superior properties. However, preparing graphene nanocomposites requires a time-consuming thermal treatment to reduce the graphene or synthesize nanomaterials, in most cases. We present an ultrafast synthesis of a carbon-coated silicon-graphene nanocomposite using a commercial microwave system. Electrochemically exfoliated graphene is used as a novel microwave susceptor to deliver efficient microwave energy conversion. Unlike graphene oxide, it does not require a time-consuming pre-thermal reduction or toxic chemical reduction to absorb microwave radiation efficiently. A carbon-coated silicon nanoparticle-electrochemically exfoliated graphene nanocomposite film was prepared by a few seconds' microwave irradiation. The sp2 domains of graphene absorb microwave radiation and generate heat to simultaneously reduce the graphene and carbonize the polydopamine carbon precursor. The as-prepared N-doped carbon-coated silicon-graphene film was used as a lithium-ion battery anode. The N-doped carbon coating decreases the contact resistance between silicon nanoparticles and graphene provides a wide range conductive network. Consequently, it exhibited a reversible capacity of 1744 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1 and 662 mA h g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 after 200 cycles. This method can potentially be a general approach to prepare various graphene nanocomposites in an extremely short time.
