A Hierarchically Structured Graphene/Ag Nanowires Paper as Thermal Interface Material

With the increase in heat power density in modern integrating electronics, thermal interface materials (TIM) that can efficiently fill the gaps between the heat source and heat sinks and enhance heat dissipation are urgently needed owing to their high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical durability. Among all the emerged TIMs, graphene-based TIMs have attracted increasing attention because of the ultrahigh intrinsic thermal conductivity of graphene nanosheets. Despite extensive efforts, developing high-performance graphene-based papers with high through-plane thermal conductivity remains challenging despite their high in-plane thermal conductivity. In this study, a novel strategy for enhancing the through-plane thermal conductivity of graphene papers by in situ depositing AgNWs on graphene sheets (IGAP) was proposed, which could boost the through-plane thermal conductivity of the graphene paper up to 7.48 W m^-1 K^-1 under packaging conditions. In the TIM performance test under actual and simulated operating conditions, our IGAP exhibits strongly enhanced heat dissipation performance compared to the commercial thermal pads. We envision that our IGAP as a TIM has great potential for boosting the development of next-generation integrating circuit electronics.

A reinforced concrete structure rGO/CNTs/Fe2O3/PEDOT:PSS paper electrode with excellent wettability and flexibility for supercapacitors

A paper electrode with a reinforced concrete structure using reduced rGO nanosheets, PEDOT:PSS, CNTs and Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles was formed by a facile and simple vacuum drying method. The assembled symmetrical supercapacitor exhibits excellent electrochemical performance.

2D and 3D Bulk Materials for Environmental Remediation: Air Filtration and Oil/Water Separation

Air and water pollution pose an enormous threat to human health and ecosystems. In particular, particulate matter (PM) and oily wastewater can cause serious environmental and health concerns. Thus, controlling PM and oily wastewater has been a great challenge. Various techniques have been reported to effectively remove PM particles and purify oily wastewater. In this article, we provide a review of the recent advancements in air filtration and oil/water separation using two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) bulk materials. Our review covers the advantages, characteristics, limitations, and challenges of air filters and oil/water separators using 2D and 3D bulk materials. In each section, we present representative works in detail and describe the concepts, backgrounds, employed materials, fabrication methods, and characteristics of 2D and 3D bulk material-based air filters and oil/water separators. Finally, the challenges, technical problems, and future research directions are briefly discussed for each section.

High-Quality Boron Nitride Nanosheets and Their Bioinspired Thermally Conductive Papers

Hexagonal boron nitride has displayed increased potential in heat dissipation applications due to its desirable high thermal conductivity and remarkable thermal stability. However, the large-yield and high-quality preparation of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) has been still an enormous challenge. In present work, we developed a universal exfoliation strategy to synthesize few-layer and defect-free BNNSs, which involved the intercalation of hexafluorosilicates/sodium hydroxide into BN crystals followed by exfoliation through a mild stirring process. The yield and concentration of as-obtained BNNS reached up to 78.5% and 12.78 mg/mL, respectively. More importantly, this method has been proven to exfoliate other layered materials like graphene (G), MoS₂, and WS₂. These as-obtained BNNSs can be directly used for constructing freestanding papers with high thermal conductivities. Typically, the thermal conductivities of the BNNS-G hybrid paper were up to 63.5 W/mK along the in-plane direction and 7.4 W/mK along the through-plane direction. According to the thermal interface materials performance measures, BNNS-G hybrid paper shows great promising applications for heat transfer in integrated circuit packaging.

EDC-Induced Self-Assembly of BSA-Au NCs

In this paper, the Au nanoplate with bright red fluorescence was synthesized on the basis of bovine serum albumin stabilized Au nanoclusters (BSA-Au NCs). The small molecule N-ethyl-N'-(dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) was used as the cross-linking agent to activate the carboxyl group on the surface of BSA, and then the condensation with amino acid in BSA induced the self-assembly of BSA-Au NCs. The particle size of Au nanoplate increased with EDC concentration. In addition, when EDC concentration was 0.0050 M, the Au nanoplate changed from smooth to grainy structure. The Au nanoplate remained the unique fluorescence characteristics of BSA-Au NCs. As EDC concentration reached 0.0025 M, the Au nanoplate even exhibited brighter red emission than that of BSA-Au NCs.

A Paper-Like Inorganic Thermal Interface Material Composed of Hierarchically Structured Graphene/Silicon Carbide Nanorods

With the increasing integration of devices in electronics fabrication, there are growing demands for thermal interface materials (TIMs) with high through-plane thermal conductivity for efficiently solving thermal management issues. Graphene-based papers consisting of a layer-by-layer stacked architecture have been commercially used as lateral heat spreaders; however, they lack in-depth studies on their TIM applications due to the low through-plane thermal conductivity (<6 W m^-1 K^-1). In this study, a graphene hybrid paper (GHP) was fabricated by the intercalation of silicon source and the in situ growth of SiC nanorods between graphene sheets based on the carbothermal reduction reaction. Due to the formation of covalent C-Si bonding at the graphene-SiC interface, the GHP possesses a superior through-plane thermal conductivity of 10.9 W m^-1 K^-1 and can be up to 17.6 W m^-1 K^-1 under packaging conditions at 75 psi. Compared with the current graphene-based papers, our GHP has the highest through-plane thermal conductivity value. In the TIM performance test, the cooling efficiency of the GHP achieves significant improvement compared to that of state-of-the-art thermal pads. Our GHP with characteristic structure is of great promise as an inorganic TIM for the highly efficient removal of heat from electronic devices.

Synergistic antibacterial effect of tetracycline hydrochloride loaded functionalized graphene oxide nanostructures

With the high demand for developing novel composites with integrated performance, graphene-based nanostructures have been drawing great attention in environmental and biomedical applications because of their extraordinary physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. Although graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets exhibit some antibacterial activities, novel GO based nanostructures with enhanced antibacterial activities are highly desired. To realize this aim, polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified GO as a tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) carrier and release platform was constructed (pGO-TCH). The nanostructures were fully characterized by TEM, AFM, FTIR and Raman spectra, which demonstrated that TCH were uniformly and compactly deposited on PEI modified GO nanosheets. The antibacterial performances of the prepared nanostructures were investigated by disk diffusion method and bacterial growth kinetics method towards Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli. Results show that pGO-TCH nanostructures exhibit good antibacterial behavior. The mechanism of antibacterial activity was studied. Moreover, the nanostructures showed good cytocompatibility. This study not only highlights a promising pGO-TCH nanostructure as a candidate of graphene-based antibacterial agent, but also provides us antibacterial mechanism between bacteria and graphene-based nanomaterials.

What determines the interfacial configuration of Nb/Al2O3 and Nb/MgO interface

Nb films are deposited on single crystal Al₂O₃ (110) and MgO(111) substrates by e-beam evaporation technique. Structure of Nb films and orientation relationships (ORs) of Nb/Al₂O₃ and Nb/MgO interface are studied and compared by the combination of experiments and simulations. The experiments show that the Nb films obtain strong (110) texture, and the Nb film on Al₂O₃(110) substrate shows a higher crystalline quality than that on MgO(111) substrate. First principle calculations show that both the lattice mismatch and the strength of interface bonding play major roles in determining the crystalline perfection of Nb films and ORs between Nb films and single crystal ceramic substrates. The fundamental mechanisms for forming the interfacial configuration in terms of the lattice mismatch and the strength of interface bonding are discussed.

Targeted highly sensitive detection/eradication of multi-drug resistant Salmonella DT104 through gold nanoparticle-SWCNT bioconjugated nanohybrids

Monoclonal antibody-conjugated sphere-shaped gold nanoparticles were combined with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to create a nanohybrid system to selectively detect and eradicate multiple drug resistant Salmonella (MDRS) typhimurium DT104 bacteria. The Raman signal intensity from Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) modified monoclonal AC04 antibody SWCNTs-gold nanoparticle (SWCNT-GNPs) hybrid provided a SERS enhancement by several orders of magnitude to detect the MDRS bacteria over the GNP system. A targeted photothermolysis experiment using 670 nm light at 2 W cm(-2) for 15 min, resulted in selective and irreparable damage to more than 99% Salmonella DT104 at the concentration of 10(5) CFU mL(-1). In comparison to solely SWCNTs or GNPs, our SWCNT-GNPs nanohybrids have also shown a better photothermal efficiency.

Gold loaded titanium dioxide–carbon nanotube composites as active photocatalysts for cyclohexane oxidation at ambient conditions

Self-assembly of amine-functionalized gold nanoparticles on phosphonate-functionalized graphene nanosheets: a highly active catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Au-NP@NH₂ can effectively self-assemble on the surface of GNS-PO₃H₂ and show excellent catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

Plasmon-induced photoluminescence immunoassay for tuberculosis monitoring using gold-nanoparticle-decorated graphene

Metal-nanoparticle-functionalized graphene, in particular, graphene sheets containing Au nanoparticles (Au NPs), have generated considerable interest because of their unique optical and electrical characteristics. In this study, we successfully produced graphene sheets decorated with Au NPs (AuGrp) using phytochemicals as reducing agents. During this reaction, Au ions intercalated into the layered graphene flakes and were then reduced into NPs, exfoliating the graphene sheets. The physicochemical properties of the AuGrp nanocomposites were characterized, and the exfoliation process was investigated using a molecular dynamics simulation of Au NPs between graphene sheets. Our proposed technique is advantageous because the phytochemicals are mild reducing agents that preserve the graphene structure during exfoliation and NP decoration. The dispersity of the NPs on the graphene sheets was drastically improved due to the use of metal-ion intercalation. Moreover, the electrical conductivity was 6-30 times higher than that of bare graphene and reduced graphene oxide. Using antibody (Ab) modified AuGrp sheets and quantum dots, a plasmonic-induced photoluminescence immunoassay of tuberculosis (TB) antigen (aG) CFP-10 was demonstrated for a potential application of these materials. The enhancement of photoluminescence (PL) response was monitored depending on the various TB aG concentrations from 5.1 pg/mL to 51 μg/mL, and the detection limit for CFP-10 was 4.5 pg/mL. Furthermore, the selectivity was demonstrated with Ag85 as the other TB aG, and PL enhancement was not observed in this case. Therefore, AuGrp-based immunoassay showed the potential for biosensor application.

Photocatalytic antifouling graphene oxide-mediated hierarchical filtration membranes with potential applications on water purification

Graphene oxide-based filtration membranes with photocatalytic antifouling function have been successfully synthesized by a two-step method for the first time. First, graphene oxide particles composite sheets are prepared by decorating graphene oxide sheets with appropriate amount of TiO2 nanoparticles, which can be assembled into filtration membranes with suitable permeation and retention rates. Then, an additional TiO2 particle layer (P25) with strong photocatalysis activity is coated on these films by filtration, forming hierarchical structure membranes. The filtration properties of the as-obtained films are investigated by treating dye solution, and the results demonstrate that these membranes possess favorable photocatalytic antifouling function under UV light irradiation, which can maintain the clean films and their filtration properties, broadening the horizon for the vast use of these graphene-involved films in water purification.

Large-area freestanding graphene paper for superior thermal management

Large-area freestanding graphene papers (GPs) are fabricated by electrospray deposition integrated with a continuous roll-to-roll process. Upon mechanical compaction and thermal annealing, GPs can achieve a thermal conductivity of as high as 1238.3-1434 W m(-1) K(-1) . The super-thermally conductive GPs display an outstanding heat-spread ability and are more efficient in removing hot spots than Cu and Al foils.

Electrolyte-induced reorganization of SDS self-assembly on graphene: a molecular simulation study

A molecular dynamics simulation was conducted to study the structure and morphology of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants adsorbed on a nanoscale graphene nanostructure in the presence of an electrolyte. The self-assembly structure can be reorganized by the electrolyte-induced effect. An increase in the ionic strength of the added electrolyte can enhance the stretching of adsorbed surfactants toward the bulk aqueous phase and make headgroups assemble densely, leading to a more compact structure of the SDS/graphene composite. The change in the self-assembly structure is attributed to the accumulation/condensation of electrolyte cations near the surfactant aggregate, consequently screening the electrostatic repulsion between charged headgroups. The role of the electrolyte revealed here provides direct microscopic evidence or an explanation of the reported experiments in the electrolyte tuning of the interfacial structure of a surfactant aggregate on the surface of carbon nanoparticles. Additionally, the buoyant density of the SDS/graphene assembly has been computed. With an increase in the ionic strength of the electrolyte, the buoyant density of the SDS/graphene composite rises. The interfacial accumulation of electrolytes provides an important contribution to the density enhancement. The study will be valuable for the dispersion and application of graphene nanomaterials.

Controllable preparation of graphene oxide/metal nanoparticle hybrids as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates for 6-mercaptopurine detection

In this contribution, a new simple and cost-effective strategy for the preparation of hybrids of graphene oxide (GO) and metal nanoparticles (MNPs) through the mediation of polyethyleneimine (PEI) molecules was reported.

Easy fabrication of macroporous gold films using graphene sheets as a template

We demonstrate a facile new and environmentally friendly strategy to fabricate monolithic macroporous gold (MPG) films using graphene sheets as a sacrificial template. Gold nanoparticle (AuNP) decorated graphene sheets were prepared by a one-pot simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and gold precursor (HAuCl4) by sodium citrate. Two thermal annealing methods, direct thermal annealing in air and a two-step thermal treatment (in N2 first and subsequently in air), were then employed to remove the template (graphene sheets), which can both produce macroporous structures, but with distinctly different morphologies. We additionally investigated the porosity evolution mechanism as well as the effect of graphene/Au weight ratio and annealing temperature on the nanoarchitecture. The two-step treatment has a more significant templating effect than direct thermal annealing to fabricate MPG films because of the existence of a preaggregation process of AuNPs assisted by graphene sheets in N2. Moreover, the resulting MPG films were found to exhibit excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity. Our method can be hopefully extended to the synthesis of other porous materials (such as Ag, Cu, Pt, and ceramic) and much wider applications.

Graphene oxide-based hydrogels to make metal nanoparticle-containing reduced graphene oxide-based functional hybrid hydrogels

In this study, stable supramolecular hydrogels have been obtained from the assembly of graphene oxide (GO) in presence of polyamines including tris(aminoethyl)amine, spermine, and spermidine [biologically active molecule]. One of these hydrogels has been well characterized by various techniques including field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) study, and Raman spectroscopy. TEM and AFM studies of one of these hydrogels have revealed the presence of a network structure of cross-linked nanosheets. This suggests the supramolecular assembly of GO in the presence of polyamines using the acid-base type electrostatic interaction. In presence of a mild reducing agent (vitamin C), one of these GO hydrogels has been transformed into a reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-based hydrogel by a simple in situ reduction of GO sheets within the hydrogel matrix. Moreover, noble metal nanoparticle containing RGO based hybrid hydrogels have been obtained using in situ and simultaneous co-reduction of GO and noble metal precursors within the GO gel matrix. The elegance of this method is in situ, "green chemical" and simultaneous reduction of GO and metal salts within the hydrogel matrix to form RGO-based hybrid gel and concomitant stabilization of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) within the gel system. The nascently formed MNPs are homogeneously and uniformly distributed on the surface of the RGO nanosheets within the hybrid gel. Interestingly, this MNP containing RGO-based hybrid hydrogel matrix acts as a potential catalyst for the reduction of aromatic nitro to amino group. The catalyst (hybrid gel matrix) can be separated easily after the reaction and reused several times.

A mussel-inspired polydopamine coating as a versatile platform for the in situ synthesis of graphene-based nanocomposites

A facile and universal approach to prepare graphene-based nanocomposites by in situ nucleation and growth of diverse noble metals, metal oxides and semiconducting nanoparticles on the surface of RGO is proposed.

Gold nanoparticle-embedded porous graphene thin films fabricated via layer-by-layer self-assembly and subsequent thermal annealing for electrochemical sensing

A uniform three-dimensional (3D) gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-embedded porous graphene (AuEPG) thin film has been fabricated by electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly of AuNPs and graphene nanosheets functionalized with bovine serum albumin and subsequent thermal annealing in air at 340 °C for 2 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations for the AuEPG film indicate that an AuNP was embedded in every pore of the porous graphene film, something that was difficult to achieve with previously reported methods. The mechanism of formation of the AuEPG film was initially explored. Application of the AuEPG film in electrochemical sensing was further demonstrated by use of H(2)O(2) as a model analyte. The AuEPG film-modified electrode showed improved electrochemical performance in H(2)O(2) detection compared with nonporous graphene-AuNP composite film-modified electrodes, which is mainly attributed to the porous structure of the AuEPG film. This work opens up a new and facile way for direct preparation of metal or metal oxide nanoparticle-embedded porous graphene composite films, which will enable exciting opportunities in highly sensitive electrochemical sensors and other advanced applications based on graphene-metal composites.

Graphene oxide-based supramolecular hydrogels for making nanohybrid systems with Au nanoparticles

In the presence of a small amount of a proteinous amino acid (arginine/tryptophan/histidine) or a nucleoside (adenosine/guanosine/cytidine), graphene oxide (GO) forms supramolecular stable hydrogels. These hydrogels have been characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and rheology. The morphology of the hydrogel reveals the presence of nanofibers and nanosheets. This suggests the supramolecular aggregation of GO in the presence of an amino acid/nucleoside. Rheological studies of arginine containing a GO-based hydrogel show a very high G' value (6.058 × 10(4) Pa), indicating the rigid, solid-like behavior of this gel. One of these hydrogels (GO-tryptophan) has been successfully utilized for the in situ synthesis and stabilization of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) within the hydrogel matrix without the presence of any other external reducing and stabilizing agents to make Au NPs containing the GO-based nanohybrid material. The Au NPs containing the hybrid hydrogel has been characterized by using UV/vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this study, gold salt (Au(3+)) has been bioreduced by the tryptophan within the hydrogel. This is a facile "green chemical" method of preparing the GO-based nanohybrid material within the hydrogel matrix. The significance of this method is the in situ reduction of gold salt within the gel phase, and this helps to decorate the nascently formed Au NPs almost homogeneously and uniformly on the surface of the GO nanosheets within the gel matrix.

Gold nano-popcorn attached SWCNT hybrid nanomaterial for targeted diagnosis and photothermal therapy of human breast cancer cells

Breast cancer presents greatest challenge in health care in today's world. The key to ultimately successful treatment of breast cancer disease is an early and accurate diagnosis. Current breast cancer treatments are often associated with severe side effects. Driven by the need, we report the design of novel hybrid nanomaterial using gold nano popcorn-attached single wall carbon nanotube for targeted diagnosis and selective photothermal treatment. Targeted SK-BR-3 human breast cancer cell sensing have been performed in 10 cancer cells/mL level, using surface enhanced Raman scattering of single walls carbon nanotube's D and G bands. Our data show that S6 aptamer attached hybrid nanomaterial based SERS assay is highly sensitive to targeted human breast cancer SK-BR-3 cell line and it will be able to distinguish it from other non targeted MDA-MB breast cancer cell line and HaCaT normal skin cell line. Our results also show that 10 min of photothermal therapy treatment by 1.5 W/cm(2) power, 785 nm laser is enough to kill cancer cells very effectively using S6 aptamer attached hybrid nanomaterials. Possible mechanisms for targeted sensing and operating principle for highly efficient photothermal therapy have been discussed. Our experimental results reported here open up a new possibility for using aptamers modified hybrid nanomaterial for reliable diagnosis and targeted therapy of cancer cell lines quickly.

Functionalizing metal nanostructured film with graphene oxide for ultrasensitive detection of aromatic molecules by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) as a powerful analytical tool has gained extensive attention. Despite of many efforts in the design of SERS substrates, it remains a grand challenge for creating a general substrate that can detect diverse target analytes. Herein, we report our attempt to address this issue by constructing a novel metal-graphene oxide nanostructured film as SERS substrate. Taking advantages of the high affinity of graphene oxide (GO) toward aromatic molecules and the SERS property of nanostructured metal, this structure exhibits great potential for diverse aromatic molecules sensing, which is demonstrated by using crystal violet (CV) with positive charge, amaranth with negative charge, and neutral phosphorus triphenyl (PPh(3)) as model molecules.
