Abstract
Water electrolysis to obtain hydrogen in combination with intermittent renewable energy resources is an emerging sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Among the available electrolyzer technologies, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) has been paid much attention because of its advantageous behavior compared to other more traditional approaches such as solid oxide electrolyzer cells, and alkaline or proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Recently, very promising results have been obtained in the AEMWE technology. This review paper is focused on recent advances in membrane electrode assembly components, paying particular attention to the preparation methods for catalyst coated on gas diffusion layers, which has not been previously reported in the literature for this type of electrolyzers. The most successful methodologies utilized for the preparation of catalysts, including co-precipitation, electrodeposition, sol-gel, hydrothermal, chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, ion beam sputtering, and magnetron sputtering deposition techniques, have been detailed. Besides a description of these procedures, in this review, we also present a critical appraisal of the efficiency of the water electrolysis carried out with cells fitted with electrodes prepared with these procedures. Based on this analysis, a critical comparison of cell performance is carried out, and future prospects and expected developments of the AEMWE are discussed.

Abstract
The three-dimensional, high-porous, and oriented WO3 nanocolumn film with broadband antireflective and high-performance flexible electrochromic dual-functionalities is achieved by utilizing a simple, one-step, room-temperature glancing angle deposition without any catalysts and templates. It is found that the WO3 nanocolumn film is effective in increasing the optical transparency in the visible range, enhancing the color-switching response time as well as improving the mechanical flexibility and electrochemical cycling stability in comparison to dense WO3 film. The further optical, morphological, and electrode reaction kinetics analyses reveal that these improvements can be attributed to its unique porous nanocolumn arrays, which reduce the refractive index, facilitate the interfacial charge-transfer and ion-penetration, and alleviate the internal stress of the film under the bending treatment. These results would provide a simple and effective guidance to design and construct low-cost, robust, flexible, stable, and transparent electrochromic smart windows.

Abstract
This work describes the reactive magnetron sputtering processing at room temperature of several mixed oxide MxSiyOz thin films (M: Fe, Ni, Co, Mo, W, Cu) intended for optical, coloring, and aesthetic applications. Specific colors can be selected by adjusting the plasma gas composition and the Si-M ratio in the magnetron target. The microstructure and chemistry of the films are characterized by a large variety of techniques including X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and infrared spectroscopy, while their optical properties are characterized by UV-vis transmission and reflection analysis. Particularly, XAS analysis of the M cations in the amorphous thin films has provided valuable information about their chemical state and local structure. It is concluded that the M cations are randomly distributed within the SiO2 matrix and that both the M concentration and its chemical state are the key parameters to control the final color of the films.

Abstract
Electrochromic materials exhibit switchable optical properties that can find applications in various fields, including smart windows, nonemissive displays, and semiconductors. High-performing nickel oxide electrochromic materials have been realized by controlling the material composition and tuning the nanostructural morphology. Post-treatment techniques could represent efficient and cost-effective approaches for performance enhancement. Herein, we report on a post-processing ozone technique that improves the electrochromic performance of an aluminum-containing nickel oxide material in lithium-ion electrolytes. The resulting materials were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). It was observed that ozone exposure increased the Ni oxidation state by introducing hole states in the NiO(6) octahedral unit. In addition, ozone exposure gives rise to higher-performing aluminum-containing nickel oxide films, relative to nickel oxide containing both Al and Li, in terms of switching kinetics, bleached-state transparency, and optical modulation. The improved performance is attributed to the decreased crystallinity and increased nickel oxidation state in aluminum-containing nickel oxide electrochromic films. The present study provides an alternative route to improve electrochromic performance for nickel oxide materials.
