Inkjet-assisted layer-by-layer printing of encapsulated arrays

Preparation of high-resolution micro/nano dot array by electrohydrodynamic jet printing with enhanced uniformity

The high-resolution array is the basic structure of most kinds of microelectronics. Electrohydrodynamic jet (E-Jet) printing technology is widely applied in manufacturing array structures with high resolution, high material compatibility and multi-modal printing. It is still challenging to acquire high uniformity of printed array with micro-nanometer resolution, which greatly influences the performance and lifetime of the microelectronics. In this paper, to improve the uniformity of the printed array, the influence of each parameter on the uniformity of the E-jet printed dot array is studied on the cobuilt NEJ-E/P200 experimental platform, finding the applied voltage plays the most important role in maintaining the uniformity of the printed array. By appropriately adjusting the printing parameters, the dot arrays with different resolutions from 500 pixels per inch (PPI) to 17,000 PPI are successfully printed. For arrays below and over 10,000 PPI, the deviations of the uniformity are within 5% and 10% respectively. In this work, the dot array over 15,000 PPI is first implemented using E-jet printing. The conclusions acquired by experimental analysis of dot array printing process are of great importance in high resolution array printing as it provides practical guidance for parameters adjustment.

Chitosan-Based Biomaterials: Insights into Chemistry, Properties, Devices, and Their Biomedical Applications

Chitosan is a marine-origin polysaccharide obtained from the deacetylation of chitin, the main component of crustaceans’ exoskeleton, and the second most abundant in nature. Although this biopolymer has received limited attention for several decades right after its discovery, since the new millennium chitosan has emerged owing to its physicochemical, structural and biological properties, multifunctionalities and applications in several sectors. This review aims at providing an overview of chitosan properties, chemical functionalization, and the innovative biomaterials obtained thereof. Firstly, the chemical functionalization of chitosan backbone in the amino and hydroxyl groups will be addressed. Then, the review will focus on the bottom-up strategies to process a wide array of chitosan-based biomaterials. In particular, the preparation of chitosan-based hydrogels, organic–inorganic hybrids, layer-by-layer assemblies, (bio)inks and their use in the biomedical field will be covered aiming to elucidate and inspire the community to keep on exploring the unique features and properties imparted by chitosan to develop advanced biomedical devices. Given the wide body of literature that has appeared in past years, this review is far from being exhaustive. Selected works in the last 10 years will be considered.

Atomic-Layer-Deposited SiOx/SnOx Nanolaminate Structure for Moisture and Hydrogen Gas Diffusion Barriers

High-density SnO_x and SiO_x thin films were deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD) at low temperatures (100 °C) using tetrakis(dimethylamino)tin(IV) (TDMASn) and di-isopropylaminosilane (DIPAS) as precursors and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and O₂ plasma as reactants, respectively. The thin-film encapsulation (TFE) properties of SnO_x and SiO_x were demonstrated with thickness dependence measurements of the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) evaluated at 50 °C and 90% relative humidity, and different TFE performance tendencies were observed between thermal and plasma ALD SnO_x. The film density, crystallinity, and pinholes formed in the SnO_x film appeared to be closely related to the diffusion barrier properties of the film. Based on the above results, a nanolaminate (NL) structure consisting of SiO_x and SnO_x deposited using plasma-enhanced ALD was measured using WVTR (H₂O molecule diffusion) at 2.43 × 10^-5 g/m² day with a 10/10 nm NL structure and time-lag gas permeation measurement (H₂ gas diffusion) for applications as passivation layers in various electronic devices.

Inkjet Printing of a Benzocyclobutene-Based Polymer as a Low-k Material for Electronic Applications

Polymeric materials with a low dielectric constant are widely used in the electronic industry due to their properties. In particular, polymer adhesives can be used in many applications such as wafer bonding and three-dimensional integration. Benzocyclobutene (BCB) is a very interesting material thanks to its excellent bonding behavior and dielectric properties. Usually, BCB is applied by spin-coating, although this technology does not allow the fabrication of complex patterns. To obtain complex patterns, it is necessary to use a printing technology, such as inkjet printing. However, inkjet printing of BCB-based inks has not yet been investigated. Here, we show the feasibility of printing complex patterns with a BCB-based ink, reaching a resolution of 130 μm. We demonstrate that with a proper dilution, BCB-based inks enter the printability window and drop ejection is achieved without the formation of satellite drops. In addition, we present the conditions in which there is an appearance of the coffee ring effect. Inks that feature a too high interaction with the substrate are more likely to show the coffee ring effect, deteriorating the printing quality. We also observe that it is possible to achieve a better film uniformity by increasing the number of printed layers, due to redissolution of the BCB-based polymer that helps to level possible inhomogeneities. Our work represents the starting point for an in-depth study of BCB-based polymer fabrication using jet printing technologies, as a comparison of the bonding quality obtained with different materials and different technologies could give more information and broaden the perspective regarding this field.

Fabricating and printing chemiresistors based on monolayer-capped metal nanoparticles

Chemiresistors that are based on monolayer-capped metal nanoparticles (MCNPs) have been used in a wide variety of innovative sensing applications, including detection and monitoring of diagnostic markers in body fluids, explosive materials, environmental contaminations and food quality control. The sensing mechanism is based on reversible swelling or aggregation and/or changes in dielectric constant of the MCNPs. In this protocol, we describe a procedure for producing MCNP-based chemiresistive sensors that is reproducible from device to device and from batch to batch. The approach relies on three main steps: (i) controlled synthesis of gold MCNPs, (ii) fabrication of electrodes that are surrounded with a microbarrier ring to confine the deposited MCNP solution and (iii) a tailor-made drying process to enable evaporation of solvent residues from the MCNP sensing layer to prevent a coffee-ring effect. Application of this approach has been shown to produce devices with ±1.5% variance-a value consistent with the criterion for commercial sensors-as well as long shelf life and stability. Fabrication of chemical sensors based on dodecanethiol- or 2-ethylhexanethiol-capped MCNPs with this approach provides high sensitivity and accuracy in the detection of volatile organic compounds (e.g., octane and decane), toxic gaseous species (e.g., HCl and NH₃) in air and simulated mixtures of lung and gastric cancer from exhaled breath.

Surface Micro- and Nanoengineering: Applications of Layer-by-Layer Technology as a Versatile Tool to Control Cellular Behavior

Extracellular matrix (ECM) cues have been widely investigated for their impact on cellular behavior. Among mechanics, physics, chemistry, and topography, different ECM properties have been discovered as important parameters to modulate cell functions, activating mechanotransduction pathways that can influence gene expression, proliferation or even differentiation. Particularly, ECM topography has been gaining more and more interest based on the evidence that these physical cues can tailor cell behavior. Here, an overview of bottom-up and top-down approaches reported to produce materials capable of mimicking the ECM topography and being applied for biomedical purposes is provided. Moreover, the increasing motivation of using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique to reproduce these topographical cues is highlighted. LbL assembly is a versatile methodology used to coat materials with a nanoscale fidelity to the geometry of the template or to produce multilayer thin films composed of polymers, proteins, colloids, or even cells. Different geometries, sizes, or shapes on surface topography can imply different behaviors: effects on the cell adhesion, proliferation, morphology, alignment, migration, gene expression, and even differentiation are considered. Finally, the importance of LbL assembly to produce defined topographical cues on materials is discussed, highlighting the potential of micro- and nanoengineered materials to modulate cell function and fate.

Controlling Structural Transformation of Polyelectrolyte Films for Spatially Encapsulating Functional Species

Although many approaches have been developed to encapsulate functional species into polyelectrolyte films, few of them can effectively control the final distribution of these ones. Herein, a facile strategy is proposed to spatially control the encapsulation of guest species by locally regulating the structural transformation of polyelectrolyte films. Patterned porosity is created within a film by cross-linking it selectively and then immersing it in an acidic solution. These porous regions can exhibit significantly different properties from other regions, including the ability to wick solution, a greater retention of guest species, and the capability of structural transformation. After loading guest species, the porous structures can be eliminated at saturated humidity to encapsulate the guest species into the film, leading to their patterned distribution across the film. Based on this method, various guest species, ranging from fluorescent dyes to nanoparticles, can be locally encapsulated into polyelectrolyte film, forming distinct patterns of arbitrary shapes and sizes and thus paving the way for further applications.

A novel approach for precisely controlled multiple cell patterning in microfluidic chips by inkjet printing and the detection of drug metabolism and diffusion

In this work we report the use of inkjet printing as a precise and convenient means for microscale cell patterning in microfluidic chips followed by cell co-culture, stimulation and analysis. A self-made inkjet printing device was manufactured with adjustable parameters, which was capable of multiple cell printing within biocompatible materials. Sodium alginate was used as a printing matrix for cell encapsulation, and precisely distributed cell arrays on glass slides were obtained by accurate software controlled printing. By covering a PDMS layer with the corresponding microchannels onto the cell array substrate and subsequently injecting an ion cross-linking reagent, the cells containing alginate arrays gelated immediately and were immobilized on the bottom of the microchip, which could be utilized for cell culture and analysis. HepG2 cells and U251 cells were successfully co-patterned in the microchip and used for drug metabolism and diffusion experiment to imitate the in vivo situation, as a means to ascertain the capability of the system for precise microscale cell patterning in a microchip. The prodrug tegafur was metabolized by HepG2 cells into the active anticancer compound 5-fluorouracil and this produced an adverse gradient effect on U251 cells according to the distance from the HepG2 cells. The developed approach presented a feasible way to integrate inkjet cell printing and microfluidic chips for the first time, which is proved to be capable of spatially controlled printing of multiple kinds of cells into a microchip for cell culture, stimulation and analysis, which could be applied to tissue engineering, drug testing and related areas. We envision that the approach will help significantly increase the cell patterning efficacy in microfluidic chips as well as reduce the extent of laborious experimental work.

Multicomponent High-throughput Drug Screening via Inkjet Printing to Verify the Effect of Immunosuppressive Drugs on Immune T Lymphocytes

High-throughput drug screening based on a multi-component array can be used to identify a variety of interaction between cells and drugs for suitable purposes. The signaling of immune cells is affected by specific proteins, diverse drug combinations, and certain immunosuppressive drugs. The effect of a drug on an organism is usually complex and involves interactions at multiple levels. Herein, we developed a multilayer fabricating system through the high-throughput assembly of nanofilms with inkjet printing to investigate the effects of immunosuppressive drugs. Immunosuppressive drugs or agents occasionally cause side effects depending on drug combinations or a patient’s condition. By incorporating various drug combinations for understanding interaction between drugs and immune cells, we were able to develop an immunological drug screening kit with immunosuppressive drugs. Moreover, the ability to control the combination of drugs, as well as their potential for high-throughput preparation should be of great benefit to the biomedical and bioanalytical field.

Stereocomplex Film Using Triblock Copolymers of Polylactide and Poly(ethylene glycol) Retain Paxlitaxel on Substrates by an Aqueous Inkjet System

The stereocomplex formation of poly(L,L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(D,D-lactide) (PDLA) using an inkjet system was expanded to the amphiphilic copolymers, using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a hydrophilic polymer. The diblock copolymers, which are composed of PEG and PLLA (MPEG-co-PLLA) and PEG and PDLA (MPEG-co-PDLA), were employed for thin-film preparation using an aqueous inkjet system. The solvent and temperature conditions were optimized for the stereocomplex formation between MPEG-co-PLLA and MPEG-co- PDLA. As a result, the stereocomplex was adequately formed in acetonitrile/water (1:1, v/v) at 40 °C. The aqueous conditions improved the stereocomplex film preparation, which have suffered from clogging when using the organic solvents in previous work. The triblock copolymers, PLLA-co-PEG-co-PLLA and PDLA-co-PEG-co-PDLA, were employed for square patterning with the inkjet system, which produced thin films. The amphiphilic polymer film was able to retain hydrophobic compounds inside. The present result contributed to the rapid film preparation by inkjet, retaining drugs with difficult solubility in water, such as paclitaxel within the films.

Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Stable Aqueous Quantum Dots for Luminescent Planar Plate

This work reports the fabrication of a luminescent planar plate based on stable aqueous quantum dots (QDs) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) via a layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technique. Preparation of aqueous QDs with facile monoalkyl maleate amphiphilic surfactants as the coating agent is conducted by a robust and efficient phase-transfer method. The as-prepared aqueous QDs exhibit bright emission, and their surface has very large negative zeta potential values, which are useful for electrostatic LBL assembly. Red, green, and blue luminescent planar plates are successfully fabricated via LBL assembly of the monocolor QDs, respectively. Through accurately adjusting the relative proportion of each monocolor luminescent component, we obtain an inspiring luminescent planar plate, which emits bright white light with a color coordinate of (0.3509, 0.3483), a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4766 K, and a high color rendering index (CRI, Ra) of 89.5 under the irradiation of UV light. Therefore, this paper reports a facile process for the design and preparation of luminescent planar plates, which have potential applications in display and solid-state lighting devices.

Spatio-Temporal Control of LbL Films for Biomedical Applications: From 2D to 3D

Introduced in the '90s by Prof. Moehwald, Lvov, and Decher, the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of polyelectrolytes has become a popular technique to engineer various types of objects such as films, capsules and free standing membranes, with an unprecedented control at the nanometer and micrometer scales. The LbL technique allows to engineer biofunctional surface coatings, which may be dedicated to biomedical applications in vivo but also to fundamental studies and diagnosis in vitro. Initially mostly developed as 2D coatings and hollow capsules, the range of complex objects created by the LbL technique has greatly expanded in the past 10 years. In this Review, the aim is to highlight the recent progress in the field of LbL films for biomedical applications and to discuss the various ways to spatially and temporally control the biochemical and mechanical properties of multilayers. In particular, three major developments of LbL films are discussed: 1) the new methods and templates to engineer LbL films and control cellular processes from adhesion to differentiation, 2) the major ways to achieve temporal control by chemical, biological and physical triggers and, 3) the combinations of LbL technique, cells and scaffolds for repairing 3D tissues, including cardio-vascular devices, bone implants and neuro-prosthetic devices.

Active drug release systems: current status, applications and perspectives

Active drug release systems offer an important privilege to manage the dosage, time and sometimes site of drug release after the implantation procedure has been performed. Once developed, they could cover such applications as hormone therapy, implantation surgery, and delivery of immunization boosters. A number of existing approaches towards such systems include arrays of microreservoirs equipped with stimuli-responsive actuators or valves. The very first developed system has reached the stage of in-human trials recently. A breakthrough could happen if microreservoirs themselves are made of responsive material susceptible towards remote triggers. A promising candidate is a material made of Layer-by-Layer assembled films which currently are widely exploited only as passive implantable drug release systems.

Inkjet printing of layer-by-layer assembled poly(lactide) stereocomplex with encapsulated proteins

Inkjet printing, a technique that precisely deposits liquid droplets in picoliter-volume ranges on a substrate, has received increased attention for its novelty and ability to produce functional materials. This technology is considered one of the most promising methods for the controlled deposition of different polymers. In our previous study, a poly(lactide) (PLA) stereocomplex was fabricated using inkjet printing on a substrate. The stereocomplex was formed by the layer-by-layer (LbL) stepwise deposition of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(d-lactide) (PDLA). Multiple inkjet passes could conclusively improve the PLAs crystal structure with solvent evaporation (solidification) and dissolution of PLA. We suggested that this technique may also be applicable for fabricating polymer composites with drugs, such as peptides, proteins, and nanoparticles, which is incompatible with the PLA. Here, we report the utilization of this technique to create a PLA stereocomplex with drugs as a drug carrier/reservoir. The three components of PLLA, PDLA, and model drugs (an 8-mer peptide, ovalbumin, and protein-encapsulating nanoparticles) were alternately overprinted onto the substrate without an intermediate rinsing step. Inkjet printing was used successfully to form PLA stereocomplex composites with drugs by the LbL deposition of polymers and functioned as drug carriers/reservoirs. The sustained release of the drugs was observed from the PLLA/PDLA/drug composites. By varying the crystalline structure of PLAs-drug composites, the release kinetics of drugs could be altered and controlled efficiently. Moreover, a high drug loading content (wt %) of PLA stereocomplex composites was achieved up to 100 wt % loading, and the composites with 50 wt % of drug loading content were available for sustained-release formulation. This fabrication technique would provide a platform for creating protein/vaccine/gene delivery carriers with the desired release profiles by controlling the microphase-separated structure and drug distribution within the composites.

25th anniversary article: ordered polymer structures for the engineering of photons and phonons

The engineering of optical and acoustic material functionalities via construction of ordered local and global architectures on various length scales commensurate with and well below the characteristic length scales of photons and phonons in the material is an indispensable and powerful means to develop novel materials. In the current mature status of photonics, polymers hold a pivotal role in various application areas such as light-emission, sensing, energy, and displays, with exclusive advantages despite their relatively low dielectric constants. Moreover, in the nascent field of phononics, polymers are expected to be a superior material platform due to the ability for readily fabricated complex polymer structures possessing a wide range of mechanical behaviors, complete phononic bandgaps, and resonant architectures. In this review, polymer-centric photonic and phononic crystals and metamaterials are highlighted, and basic concepts, fabrication techniques, selected functional polymers, applications, and emerging ideas are introduced.

Release of polyphenolic drugs from dynamically bonded layer-by-layer films

Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled films have been exploited for surface-mediated drug delivery. The drugs loaded in the films were usually released via diffusion or the degradation of one of the film components. Here we demonstrate that drug release can also be achieved by exploiting the dynamic nature of hydrogen-bonded LbL films. The films were fabricated from tannic acid (TA), a model polyphenolic drug, and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVPON). The driving force for the film buildup is the hydrogen bonding between the two components, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The film growth is linear, and the growth rate of the film decreases with increasing assembly temperature. Because of the reversible/dynamic nature of hydrogen bonding, when soaked in aqueous solutions, the PVPON/TA films disassemble gradually and thus release TA to the media. The release rate of TA increases with increasing pH and temperature but decreases with increasing ionic strength. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies on the surface morphology of the film during TA release reveal that the film surface becomes smoother and then rougher again because of the dewetting of the film. The released TA can scavenge ABTS(+•) cation radicals, indicating it retains its antioxidant activity, a major biological activity of polyphenols.
