Layered tantalum oxynitride nanorod array carpets for efficient photoelectrochemical conversion of solar energy: experimental and DFT insights

Laser-Assisted Nanotexturing and Silver Immobilization on Titanium Implant Surfaces to Enhance Bone Cell Mineralization and Antimicrobial Properties

Despite the great advancement and wide use of titanium (Ti) and Ti-based alloys in different orthopedic implants, device-related infections remain the major complication in modern orthopedic and trauma surgery. Most of these infections are often caused by both poor antibacterial and osteoinductive properties of the implant surface. Here, we have demonstrated a facile two-step laser nanotexturing and immobilization of silver onto the titanium implants to improve both cellular integration and antibacterial properties of Ti surfaces. The required threshold laser processing power for effective nanotexturing and osseointegration was systematically determined by the level of osteoblast cells mineralized on the laser nanotextured Ti (LN-Ti) surfaces using a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser (Nd:YAG, wavelength of 1.06 μm). Laser processing powers above 24 W resulted in the formation of hierarchical nanoporous structures (average pore 190 nm) on the Ti surface with a 2.5-fold increase in osseointegration as compared to the pristine Ti surface. Immobilization of silver nanoparticles onto the LN-Ti surface was conducted by dip coating in an aqueous silver ionic solution and subsequently converted to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using a low power laser-assisted photocatalytic reduction process. Structural and surface morphology analysis via XRD and SEM revealed a uniform distribution of Ag and the formation of an AgTi-alloy interface on the Ti surface. The antibacterial efficacy of the LN-Ti with laser immobilized silver (LN-Ti/LI-Ag) was tested against both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The LN-Ti/LI-Ag surface was observed to have efficient and stable antimicrobial properties for over 6 days. In addition, it was found that the LN-Ti/LI-Ag maintained a cytocompatibility and bone cell mineralization property similar to the LN-Ti surface. The differential toxicity of the LN-Ti/LI-Ag between bacterial and cellular species qualifies this approach as a promising candidate for novel rapid surface modification of biomedical metal implants.

On the relationship between rutile/anatase ratio and the nature of defect states in sub-100 nm TiO2 nanostructures: experimental insights

Black TiO₂ is being widely investigated due to its superior optical activity and potential applications in photocatalytic hydrogen generation. Herein, the limitations of the hydrogenation process of TiO₂ nanostructures are unraveled by exploiting the fundamental tradeoffs affecting the overall efficiency of the water splitting process. To control the nature and concentration of defect states, different reduction rates are applied to sub-100 nm TiO₂ nanotubes, chosen primarily for their superiority over their long counterparts. X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy disclosed changes in the stoichiometry of TiO₂ with the reduction rate. UV-vis and Raman spectra showed that high reduction rates promote the formation of the rutile phase in TiO₂, which is inactive towards water splitting. Furthermore, electrochemical analysis revealed that such high rates induce a higher concentration of localized electronic defect states that hinder the water splitting performance. Finally, incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) highlighted the optimum reduction rate that attains a relatively lower defect concentration as well as lower rutile content, thereby achieving the highest conversion efficiency.

Efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting on ultrasmall defect-rich TaOx nanoclusters enhanced by size-selected Pt nanocluster promoters

Formation of nanoclusters has attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their distinct properties from isolated atoms and bulk solids. Here, we focus on the catalytic properties of supported transition metal oxide nanoclusters, such as TaO₂, with a well-defined size distribution below 10 nm. We show that their catalytic performance can be greatly enhanced by introducing a reaction promoter such as Pt. Different combinations of precisely size-selected, defect-rich TaO_x and Pt nanoclusters are produced by a gas-phase aggregation technique in a special DC magnetron sputtering system. Argon flow rate and aggregation length are carefully optimized to control the sizes of these ultrasmall TaO_x and Pt nanoclusters by using a quadrupole mass filter, and TEM studies reveal the different crystalline nature of TaO_x (amorphous) and Pt (crystalline) nanoclusters. We have further demonstrated the size-dependent photoanode activity of (TaO_x, Pt) nanocluster systems in a photoelectrochemical water splitting reaction, where the Pt nanocluster promoters are found to provide a significant enhancement in the photocurrent density, approximately tripled that was observed from just TaO_x nanocluster catalysts alone. The photocurrent density and photoconversion efficiency tend to reduce when Pt nanoclusters become overpopulated due to blocking of the photosensitive TaO_x surface. Reducing the Pt nanocluster size resolves this problem by incorporating a greater number of smaller nanocluster promoters without blocking TaO_x, which leads to further enhancement in the photocurrent density. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to synergetic effects introduced by the Pt nanoclusters that act as temporary charge storage sites to facilitate effective separation of a large number of electron-hole pairs, generated from a large number of active sites on the defect-rich amorphous TaO_x nanoclusters upon illumination.

Silver Nanoparticles-Decorated Titanium Oxynitride Nanotube Arrays for Enhanced Solar Fuel Generation

We demonstrate, for the first time, the synthesis of highly ordered titanium oxynitride nanotube arrays sensitized with Ag nanoparticles (Ag/TiON) as an attractive class of materials for visible-light-driven water splitting. The nanostructure topology of TiO2, TiON and Ag/TiON was investigated using FESEM and TEM. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses confirm the formation of the oxynitride structure. Upon their use to split water photoelectrochemically under AM 1.5 G illumination (100 mW/cm2, 0.1 M KOH), the titanium oxynitride nanotube array films showed significant increase in the photocurrent (6 mA/cm2) compared to the TiO2 nanotubes counterpart (0.15 mA/cm2). Moreover, decorating the TiON nanotubes with Ag nanoparticles (13 ± 2 nm in size) resulted in exceptionally high photocurrent reaching 14 mA/cm2 at 1.0 VSCE. This enhancement in the photocurrent is related to the synergistic effects of Ag decoration, nitrogen doping, and the unique structural properties of the fabricated nanotube arrays.

Self-assembled nanostructured photoanodes with staggered bandgap for efficient solar energy conversion

Vertically oriented Ta-W-O nanotube array films were fabricated via the anodization of Ta-W alloy foils in HF-containing electrolytes. HF concentration is a key parameter in achieving well-adhered nanotube array structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and diffuse reflectance measurements confirm the staggered band-alignment between Ta2O5 and WO3, which facilitates the separation of charge carriers. The nanotubes made of Ta-W films containing 10% W showed 100-fold improvement in the measured photocurrent compared to pristine Ta2O5 upon their use to split water photoelectrochemically. This enhancement was related to the efficient charge transport and the red shift in absorption spectrum with increase of the W content, which was asserted by ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy measurements. The TA measurements showed the elimination of trap states upon annealing Ta-W-O nanotubes and, hence, minimizing the charge carrier trapping, whereas the trap states remain in pristine Ta2O5 nanotubes even after annealing.
