Abstract
The thiophene- and pyrrole-fused heterocyclic compounds have garnered significant interest for their distinctive electron-rich characteristics and notable optoelectronic properties. However, the construction of high-performance systems within this class is of great challenge. Herein, we develop a series of novel dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d] pyrrole (DTP) and tetrathieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d] pyrrole (TTP) bridged arylamine compounds (DTP-C4, DTP-C12, DTP-C4-Fc, TTP-C4-OMe, TTP-C4, and TTP-C12) with varying carbon chain lengths. The pertinent experimental results reveal that this series of compounds undergo completely reversible multistep redox processes. Notably, TTP-bridged compounds TTP-C4 and TTP-C12 exhibit impressive multistep near-infrared (NIR) absorption alterations with notable color changes and electroluminescent behaviors, which are mainly attributed to the charge transfer transitions from terminal arylamine units to central bridges, as supported by theoretical calculations. Additionally, compound DTP-C4 demonstrates the ability to visually identify gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, this work suggests the promising electroresponsive nature of compounds TTP-C4 and TTP-C12, positioning them as excellent materials for various applications. It also provides a facile approach to constructing high-performance multifunctional luminescent materials, particularly those with strong and long-wavelength NIR absorption capabilities.

Abstract
Three unsymmetrical wave-shaped heptathienoacenes (UHT-1, UHT-2 and UHT-3) with sulfur atoms at different isomeric locations in the two terminal thiophene rings were designed and synthesized. The synthetic strategy contains two crucial steps, including the cross-coupling of two different dithienothiophene isomers (DTT) from dithieno[2,3-b:3',2'-d]thiophene (bb-DTT), dithieno[2,3-b:2',3'-d]thiophene (bt-DTT) and dithieno[2,3-b:3',4'-d]thiophene (bs-DTT) as building blocks through the Negishi coupling and intramolecular cyclization reactions with (SnBu3)2S. X-ray crystal structures of UHT-1, UHT-2 and UHT-3 show that the molecules adopt a wave-shaped geometry with multiple intermolecular interactions, such as S-S, S-C and S-H, which result in different crystal packing patterns. The isomeric location of the sulfur atoms of the two terminal thiophene rings of UHT-1, UHT-2 and UHT-3 plays an important role in tuning π-electronic conjugation and spectroscopic behaviors.

Abstract
Ambifunctional heterpentacenes with the heteroatom sequence SSNSS in the ladder-type backbone were used either as donor or as nonfullerenic acceptor in solution-processed bulk-heterojunction solar cells. Different acceptor moieties and side chains were inserted. Synthesis and characterization of the systematically varied structural motifs provided insight in structure-property relationships. Moreover, a dimeric heteroacene was synthesized, and the optoelectronic properties were compared to those of its monomeric counterpart.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of a stable and efficient hole-transport material (HTM) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are one of the most demanding research areas. At present, 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-MeOTAD) is a commonly used HTM in the fabrication of high-efficiency PSCs; however, its complicated synthesis, addition of a dopant in order to realize the best efficiency, and high cost are major challenges for the further development of PSCs. Herein, various diketopyrrolopyrrole-based small molecules were synthesized with the same backbone but distinct alkyl side-chain substituents (i.e., 2-ethylhexyl-, n-hexyl-, ((methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl-, and (2-((2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl)acetamide, designated as D-1, D-2, D-3, and D-4, respectively) as HTMs. The variation in the alkyl chain has shown obvious effects on the optical and electrochemical properties as well as on the molecular packing and film-forming ability. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PSC under one sun illumination (100 mW cm-2) is shown to increase in the order of D-1 (8.32%) < D-2 (11.12%) < D-3 (12.05%) < D-4 (17.64%). Various characterization techniques reveal that the superior performance of D-4 can be ascribed to the well-aligned highest occupied molecular orbital energy level with the counter electrode, the more compact π-π stacking with a higher coherence length, and the excellent hole mobility of 1.09 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1, thus providing excellent energetics for effective charge transport with minimal charge-carrier recombination. Furthermore, the addition of the dopant Li-TFSI in D-4 is shown to deliver a remarkable PCE of 20.19%, along with a short-circuit current density (JSC), open-circuit voltage (VOC), and fill factor (FF) of 22.94 mA cm-2, 1.14 V, and 73.87%, respectively, and superior stability compared to that of other HTMs. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of side-chain engineering for tailoring the properties of HTMs, thus offering new design tactics to fabricate for the synthesis of highly efficient and stable HTMs for PSCs.

Abstract
After the first report in 2008, diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based small-molecule photovoltaic materials have been intensively explored. The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) for the DPP-based small-molecule donors have been improved up to 8%. Furthermore, through judicious structure modification, DPP-based small molecules can also be converted into electron-acceptor materials, and, recently, some exciting progress has been achieved. The development of DPP-based photovoltaic small molecules is summarized here, and the photovoltaic performance is discussed in relation to structural modifications, such as the variations of donor-acceptor building blocks, alkyl substitutions, and the type of conjugated bridges, as well as end-capped groups. It is expected that the discussion will provide a guideline in the exploration of novel and promising DPP-containing photovoltaic small molecules.

Abstract
A novel, NIR absorbing organic small molecular donor material denoted as ICT3 with an A-D-D-D-A architecture having dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole (DTP) and butylrhodanine as donor and acceptor moieties, respectively, is synthesized and its thermal, photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties are explored. ICT3 has excellent stability over a broad range of temperatures with a decomposition temperature (Td corresponds to 5% weight loss) of 372 °C, soluble in most common organic solvents (solubility up to 30 mg mL-1) and suitable for solution processing during device fabrication. ICT3 has broad (520-820 nm) and intense visible region absorption (molar excitation coefficient is 1.69 × 105 mol-1 cm-1) and has suitable HOMO and LUMO energy levels with the [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) acceptor for efficient exciton dissociation and charge transfer. Bulk heterojunction solar cells (BHJSCs) with an indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)/ICT3:PC71BM/poly(9,9-bis(3'-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl)fluorene-2,7-diyl)-alt-(9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl) (PFN)/aluminium (Al) structure are fabricated and the BHJSCs with the active layer as cast from chloroform solution displayed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.04% (JSC = 8.22 mA cm-2, VOC = 0.86 V and FF = 0.43). Annealing the active layer significantly improved the PCE of these BHJSCs. While thermal annealing of the active layer improved the PCE of the BHJSCs to 4.94%, thermal followed by solvent vapour annealing enhanced the PCE to 6.53%. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy analyses are carried out on the active layer and these results revealed that annealing treatment improves the crystallinity and nanoscale morphology of the active layer, enriches the device exciton generation and dissociation efficiency, charge transport and collection efficiency and reduces carrier recombination. The observed higher PCE (6.53%) of the BHJSCs having ICT3 with a DTP donor moiety broadens the scope to develop new, efficient DTP based small molecular donor materials for BHJSCs.

Abstract
Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based small molecules with acceptor-core-acceptor (A-core-A) type as donor materials have been used successfully in organic solar cells (OSC). In this work, based on the DPP-core-DPP type molecule SM1 consisting of a DPP unit as acceptor and benzene as the core, we replaced the benzene core with more electron-withdrawing groups in SM1 and further designed four new small-molecular donors (SM2-SM5) in order to improve the electrical properties, optical absorption and performance in OSC applications. The calculated results indicate that the designed small-molecular donors SM2-SM5 exhibit better performances in comparison with SM1, such as lower highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), narrower energy gap, larger absorption range, better electronic transfer between donor and acceptor and higher hole mobility. Moreover, the decreased HOMO levels and transition energy of small-molecular donors in OSC applications play an important role in the parameters of open-current voltage, fill factor and short-circuit current. Consequently, adjusting the electron-deficient ability of cores in DPP-core-DPP type small-molecular donors is an efficient approach that can be used to obtain high-efficiency DPP-based small-molecular donors for OSC applications. Graphical Abstract The designed small-molecules with good electronic and photophysical properties will act as a promising donor candidate for organic solar cell applications. Moreover, The decreased HOMO levels and transition energy of small-molecular donors in OSC applications play an important role in the parameters of open-current voltage, fill factor and short-circuit current.

Abstract
Two molecules containing a central diketopyrrolopyrrole and two oligothiophene units have been designed and synthesized. Comparisons between the molecules containing terminal F (FDPP) and Cl (CDPP) atoms allowed us to evaluate the effects of halogenation on the photovoltaic properties of the small molecule organic solar cells (OSCs). The OSCs devices employing FDPP:PC71BM films showed power conversion efficiencies up to 4.32%, suggesting that fluorination is an efficient method for constructing small molecules for OSCs.

Abstract
Three 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indancene (BODIPY)-based small molecule donors H-T-BO, Br-T-BO, and DIMER were synthesized and fully characterized. Although modification at the meso position has a subtle influence on the light-harvesting ability, energy levels, and phase sizes, it has a striking effect on the packing behavior in solid film as two-dimension grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (2D GIXRD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirm. Br-T-BO exhibits better packing ordering than H-T-BO in pristine film, which is beneficial from reinforced intermolecular interaction from halogen atoms. However, when [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) is blended, no diffraction patterns corresponding to the monomeric donor can be seen from the XRD data and both H-T-BO- and Br-T-BO-based blend films give a slightly blue-shifting absorption peak with respect to their neat ones, both of which imply destruction of the crystalline structure. As for DIMER, the enhancement of the intermolecular interaction arises not only from the expansion of the backbone but the "steric pairing effect" brought on by its twisted structure. When blended with PC71BM, the diffraction patterns of DIMER are, however, kept well and the absorption peak position remains unchanged, which indicates the ordered packing of DIMER is held well in blend film. In coincidence with the fact that packing ordering improves from H-T-BO to Br-T-BO and DIMER in pristine films and the ordered packing of DIMER even in blend film, DIMER-based devices show the highest and most balanced hole/electron mobility of 1.16 × 10(-3)/0.90 × 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)with respect to Br-T-BO (4.71 × 10(-4)/2.09 × 10(-4) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)) and H-T-BO (4.27 × 10(-5)/1.00 × 10(-5) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)) based ones. The short-circuit current density of the three molecule-based cells follows the same trend from H-T-BO (6.80) to Br-T-BO (7.62) and then to DIMER (11.28 mA cm(-2)). Finally, the H-T-BO-, Br-T-BO-, and DIMER-based optimal device exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 1.56%, 1.96%, and 3.13%, respectively.

Abstract
Two different thienopyrroledione (TPD)-based small molecules (SMs) with different alkyl substitution positions were synthesized, and their photovoltaic properties are measured and compared to examine the effect of the alkyl substitution position on their optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties. The use of TPD as an electron-accepting unit in conjugated SMs effectively lowers the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of the conjugated SMs and leads to high open-circuit voltage (VOC). The two SMs with n-hexyl group substituted at different positions exhibit almost identical optical and electrochemical properties in the pristine state. However, the crystallographic and morphological characteristics of the two SMs are significantly different, because they are blended with PC71BM. The SM in which n-alkyl groups are substituted at the central accepting unit exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.0% with VOC=0.94 V, which is among the highest PCE values of TPD-based SM devices, whereas the SM with n-alkyl groups being substituted at the chain ends shows a moderate PCE value of 3.1%.
