Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is one of the most sensitive analytical tools. In some cases, it is possible to record a high-quality SERS spectrum in which even a single molecule is involved. Therefore, SERS is considered a significantly promising option as an alternative to routine analytical techniques used in food, environmental, biochemical, and medical analyzes. In this review, the definitive applications of SERS developed to identify biochemically important species (especially medical and biological) from the simplest to the most complex are briefly discussed. Moreover, the potential capability of SERS for being used as an alternative to routine methods in diagnostic and clinical cases is demonstrated. In addition, this article describes how SERS-based sensors work, addresses its advancements in the last 20 years, discusses its applications for detecting Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), and finally describes future works. The authors hope that this article will be useful for researchers who want to enter this amazing field of research.

A 433-MHz surface acoustic wave sensor with Ni-TiO 2-poly(L-lysine) composite film for dopamine determination. Mikrochim Acta 2020; 187:671. Abstract
A ternary hybrid material composed of Ni nanoparticles (NPs), TiO2 NPs, and poly(L-lysine) (Ply) was used as a sensing material. It was electrodeposited in situ onto a commercial 433-MHz surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator to construct a Ni-TiO2-Ply/SAW sensor. The Ni-TiO2-Ply sensing layer fully covered the resonant cavity of the SAW resonator. As the sensing layer completely covers the interdigital transducer and piezoelectric substrate, the sensing area is significantly increased, and the resonator is protected from damage or contamination. To detect the level of dopamine (DA) in serum, the fabrication of the Ni-TiO2-Ply sensing layer, distributions of various components in the sensing layer, and responses of the SAW biosensor to DA were investigated in detail. In addition, an electric field-assisted liquid-phase oxidation technique was developed for loading analytes onto the SAW sensors. After optimizing the pH value and L-lysine content of the sensing layer electrolyte and the pH value of the DA solution, the SAW biosensor responded to DA with a linear concentration range of 1 to 1000 nM, sensitivity of 5.77 MHz nM-1 cm-2, and limit of detection of 0.067 nM. Moreover, the sensor exhibited good selectivity, reproducibility, and stability at ambient temperature.Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Lung cancer is continuously the leading cause of cancer related death. Noninvasive exhaled breath condensate (EBC) detection using portable devices may pave a new avenue for monitoring conditions of the high-risk population of lung cancer, thereby increasing the 5-year survival rate. Here, a portable system is proposed for on-line detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in EBC. This miniaturized system employs an aptameric Love-wave sensor to provide a detection with advantages of low cost, operational simplicity and high sensitivity. In addition, the aptasensor can be used in label-free and real-time monitoring. Integrating with measurement circuits and iOS APP, the system realizes online transmission and processing of signals which reflect the CEA concentration. Artificial samples have been detected, and experimental results demonstrate that the present system is sensitive (limit of detection = 1 ng/ml) and accurate (relative accuracy = 0.995). Applying in detection of clinical EBC, the relative error is as low as 0.305% and the result can be used to distinguish lung cancer patients from healthy subjects. Therefore, this portable system offers a potential solution for noninvasive detection of lung cancer in its early stage.

Abstract
In this work, we presented a thin-film piezoelectric acoustic gas sensor with enhanced sensitivity by a surface modification strategy of oxygen plasma treated graphene oxide (GO) functionalization. By exposing to ammonia vapor (NH3) of various concentrations at controlled temperature and humidity, the characteristics of the GO-coated acoustic sensor were investigated, that is, sensitivity, linearity, response, and recovery time. Oxygen plasma treatment of the GO-coated sensor further enhanced the sensitivity compared with the freshly prepared GO-coated sensor. The mechanism of oxygen plasma treatment effect on the GO-coated sensor was discussed based on characterizations of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and precise weighing of the acoustic sensor. It was found that the oxygen plasma treatment introduces numerous defects to GO flakes, which are uniformly distributed across the GO surface, providing more gas molecule binding sites.

Abstract
A combined theoretical and experimental analysis of dopamine (DA) is presented in this work with the objective of achieving more accurate detection and monitoring of this neurotransmitter at very low concentrations, specific to physiological levels. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy on silver nanoparticles was employed for recording DA concentrations as low as 10-11 molar. Quantum chemical density functional calculations were carried out using Gaussian-09 analytical suite software. Relatively good agreement between the simulated and experimentally determined results indicates the presence of different DA molecular forms, such as uncharged DA±, anionic DA-, and dopaminequinone. Disappearance of the strongest bands of dopamine around 750 cm-1 and 790 cm-1, which suggests its adsorption onto the metallic surface, is not only consistent with all of these DA configurations, but also provides additional information about the analyte's redox process and voltammetric detection. On the other hand, occurrence of the abovementioned Raman lines could indicate the formation of multilayers of DA or its presence in a cationic DA⁺ form. Thus, through coordinated experiment and theory, valuable insights into changes observed in the vibrational signatures of this important neurotransmitter can be achieved for a better understanding of its detection at physiological levels, which is crucial if further optovoltammetric medical device development is envisioned.

Abstract
Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) was used for the evaluation of conducting polymer polypyrrole (Ppy), which was formed by a sequence of potential pulses on a Au-plated EQCM disc. The Ppy layer was obtained from freshly prepared polymerization solution consisting of pyrrole that was dissolved in phosphate buffer. The main aim of the study was to determine some aspects of the Ppy layer formation process. The polymerization process was estimated by EQCM and chronoamperometry. The Cottrell equation was used for the integration of total charge that was passing through the electrochemical cell during the formation of the Ppy-based layer. It was found that the charge of the electrical double layer, which was estimated while applying an Anson plot, is negative. From this observation, it could be assumed that the pyrrole oxidation process could be well described by principles of heterogeneous kinetics. The negative value of the electrical double layer was the result of a charge-transfer restriction. This restriction of charge transfer could occur due to partial blocking of the electrode surface by an aggregated Ppy particle-based layer. Quartz crystal motional resistance (R) was taken into account during this research. Ppy layer formation is represented schematically on the basis of the obtained experimental results and analytical data.
