Nanoparticulate coatings with efficient up-conversion properties

Highly Versatile Upconverting Oxyfluoride-Based Nanophosphor Films

Fluoride-based compounds doped with rare-earth cations are the preferred choice of materials to achieve efficient upconversion, of interest for a plethora of applications ranging from bioimaging to energy harvesting. Herein, we demonstrate a simple route to fabricate bright upconverting films that are transparent, self-standing, flexible, and emit different colors. Starting from the solvothermal synthesis of uniform and colloidally stable yttrium fluoride nanoparticles doped with Yb3+ and Er3+, Ho3+, or Tm3+, we find the experimental conditions to process the nanophosphors as optical quality films of controlled thickness between few hundreds of nanometers and several micrometers. A thorough analysis of both structural and photophysical properties of films annealed at different temperatures reveals a tradeoff between the oxidation of the matrix, which transitions through an oxyfluoride crystal phase, and the efficiency of the upconversion photoluminescence process. It represents a significant step forward in the understanding of the fundamental properties of upconverting materials and can be leveraged for the optimization of upconversion systems in general. We prove bright multicolor upconversion photoluminescence in oxyfluoride-based phosphor transparent films upon excitation with a 980 nm laser for both rigid and flexible versions of the layers, being possible to use the latter to coat surfaces of arbitrary shape. Our results pave the way toward the development of upconverting coatings that can be conveniently integrated in applications that demand a large degree of versatility.

In situ immobilization of YVO4:Eu phosphor particles on a film of vertically oriented Y2(OH)5Cl·nH2O nanosheets

A heterostructured photoluminescence 'turn-off' film was developed using vertically oriented LYH:Eu nanosheets as a partial sacrificial layer for isolated YVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanophosphor layers and was used for the convenient detection and removal of Cu²⁺ ions with excellent sensitivity and recyclability.

A new solvothermal method for the synthesis of size-controlled YAG:Ce single-nanocrystals

This modified solvothermal method, combined with in situ photoluminescence measurements, allows the synthesis of well-crystallized size-controlled YAG:Ce nanocrystals.

Lanthanoid-Doped Phosphate/Vanadate Mixed Hollow Particles as Ratiometric Luminescent Sensors

Rare earth (RE) phosphates and vanadates are structurally similar compositions that display distinct but complementary luminescent properties. The properties of these phosphors can be combined in REPO₄-REVO₄ heterostructures during the development of new sensing technologies for biological applications. This work presents the synthesis of hollow RE phosphate/vanadate colloidal particles and evaluates their applicability as luminescent markers. Hydrothermal treatments of RE hydroxycarbonate particles in the presence of the PO₄^3- and VO₄^3- precursors afforded the final REPO₄-REVO₄ solids in a two-step template synthesis. We converted precursor hydroxycarbonate particles into the final heterostructures and characterized their structure and morphology. According to our detailed study into the spectroscopic properties of Eu³⁺-doped particles and their luminescence response to several species, the presence of the phosphate and vanadate phases in a single particle provided different chemical environments and enabled the design of a ratiometric approach to detect H₂O₂. These results open new perspectives for the development of new intracellular luminescent markers.

A deep look into the spray coating process in real-time-the crucial role of x-rays

Tailoring functional thin films and coating by rapid solvent-based processes is the basis for the fabrication of large scale high-end applications in nanotechnology. Due to solvent loss of the solution or dispersion inherent in the installation of functional thin films and multilayers the spraying and drying processes are strongly governed by non-equilibrium kinetics, often passing through transient states, until the final structure is installed. Therefore, the challenge is to observe the structural build-up during these coating processes in a spatially and time-resolved manner on multiple time and length scales, from the nanostructure to macroscopic length scales. During installation, the interaction of solid-fluid interfaces and between the different layers, the flow and evaporation themselves determine the structure of the coating. Advanced x-ray scattering methods open a powerful pathway for observing the involved processes in situ, from the spray to the coating, and allow for gaining deep insight in the nanostructuring processes. This review first provides an overview over these rapidly evolving methods, with main focus on functional coatings, organic photovoltaics and organic electronics. Secondly the role and decisive advantage of x-rays is outlined. Thirdly, focusing on spray deposition as a rapidly emerging method, recent advances in investigations of spray deposition of functional materials and devices via advanced x-ray scattering methods are presented.

Color tunable up-conversion emission from ZrO2:Er3+,Yb3+ textile fibers

ZrO₂:xEr³⁺,yYb³⁺ fibers (diameters of approximately 1 μm) with good flexibility and toughness were synthesized via electrospinning technology, and color tunable up-conversion emissions were observed as the changes of Yb³⁺ concentraion.
