Extraction of oil from oil sands using thermoresponsive polymeric surfactants

New insights into interaction between oil and solid during hydrothermal treatment of oily sludge

Hydrothermal treatment (HT) can effectively dehydrate and reduce oily sludge (OS) volume, but the resulting hydrothermal oily sludge (HOS) presents greater challenges for washing than the initial oily sludge (IOS). This study examines the effects of HT on OS by analyzing changes in water, oil, and solid. Results indicate that HT considerably decreases the water content in OS while increasing resin and asphaltenes contents. In addition, condensation, side-chain scission, and oxidation reactions occur during the HT process, resulting in coking, agglomeration, and an increase in oxygen-containing groups. This increase, further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), enhances the interaction between oil and solids. Calcite, the most prevalent solid-phase component, may form a calcium bridge with the oxygen-containing groups. Moreover, HT reduces the solid particle size, thereby increasing the oil-solid contact area. Interestingly, the process of deasphalting diminishes the interaction between oil and solids, facilitating sludge washing. After washing, the residual oil content in HOS is reduced to less than 0.34%. This study elucidates why HOS is challenging to separate from oil and solids and introduces a novel method that combines dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA)-assisted heptane deasphalting with conventional washing techniques. This method shows promise for applications in OS affected by weathering processes.

Chitosan Grafted with Thermoresponsive Poly(di(ethylene glycol) Methyl Ether Methacrylate) for Cell Culture Applications

Chitosan is a polysaccharide extracted from animal sources such as crab and shrimp shells. In this work, chitosan films were modified by grafting them with a thermoresponsive polymer, poly(di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (PMEO₂MA). The films were modified to introduce functional groups useful as reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents. PMEO₂MA chains were then grown from the films via RAFT polymerization, making the chitosan films thermoresponsive. The degree of substitution of the chitosan-based RAFT agent and the amount of monomer added in the grafting reaction were varied to control the length of the grafted PMEO₂MA chain segments. The chains were cleaved from the film substrates for characterization using ¹H NMR and a gel permeation chromatography analysis. Temperature-dependent contact angle measurements were used to demonstrate that the hydrophilic-hydrophobic nature of the film surface varied with temperature. Due to the enhanced hydrophobic character of PMEO₂MA above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the ability of PMEO₂MA-grafted chitosan films to serve as a substrate for cell growth at 37 °C (incubation temperature) was tested. Interactions with cells (fibroblasts, macrophages, and corneal epithelial cells) were assessed. The modified chitosan films supported cell viability and proliferation. As the temperature is lowered to 4 °C (refrigeration temperature, below the LCST), the grafted chitosan films become less hydrophobic, and cell adhesion should decrease, facilitating their removal from the surface. Our results indicated that the cells were detached from the films following a short incubation period at 4 °C, were viable, and retained their ability to proliferate.

Advanced Switchable Molecules and Materials for Oil Recovery and Oily Waste Cleanup

Advanced switchable molecules and materials have shown great potential in numerous applications. These novel materials can express different states of physicochemical properties as controlled by a designated stimulus, such that the processing condition can always be maintained in an optimized manner for improved efficiency and sustainability throughout the whole process. Herein, the recent advances in switchable molecules/materials in oil recovery and oily waste cleanup are reviewed. Oil recovery and oily waste cleanup are of critical importance to the industry and environment. Switchable materials can be designed with various types of switchable properties, including i) switchable interfacial activity, ii) switchable viscosity, iii) switchable solvent, and iv) switchable wettability. The materials can then be deployed into the most suitable applications according to the process requirements. An in-depth discussion about the fundamental basis of the design considerations is provided for each type of switchable material, followed by details about their performances and challenges in the applications. Finally, an outlook for the development of next-generation switchable molecules/materials is discussed.

Thermoresponsive Glycopolymers Based on Enzymatically Synthesized Oligo-β-Mannosyl Ethyl Methacrylates and N-Isopropylacrylamide

We present here a series of thermoresponsive glycopolymers in the form of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-(2-[β-manno[oligo]syloxy] ethyl methacrylate)s. These copolymers were prepared from oligo-β-mannosyl ethyl methacrylates that were synthesized through enzymatic catalysis, and were subsequently investigated with respect to their aggregation and phase behavior in aqueous solution using a combination of 1H NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The thermoresponsive glycopolymers were prepared by conventional free radical copolymerization of different mixtures of 2-(β-manno[oligo]syloxy)ethyl methacrylates (with either one or two saccharide units) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm). The results showed that below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of poly(NIPAm), the glycopolymers readily aggregate into nanoscale structures, partly due to the presence of the saccharide moieties. Above the LCST of poly(NIPAm), the glycopolymers rearrange into a heterogeneous mixture of fractal and disc/globular aggregates. Cryo-TEM and SAXS data demonstrated that the presence of the pendant β-mannosyl moieties in the glycopolymers induces a gradual conformational change over a wide temperature range. Even though the onset of this transition is not different from the LCST of poly(NIPAm), the gradual conformational change offers a variation of the temperature-dependent properties in comparison to poly(NIPAm), which displays a sharp coil-to-globule transition. Importantly, the compacted form of the glycopolymers shows a larger colloidal stability compared to the unmodified poly(NIPAm). In addition, the thermoresponsiveness can be conveniently tuned by varying the sugar unit-length and the oligo-β-mannosyl ethyl methacrylate content.

Surfactant-Controlled Mobility of Oil Droplets in Mineral Nanopores

Polymer flooding is one of the widely used enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods. However, tuning polymer properties to achieve improved performance in porous mineral rocks of diverse oil reservoirs remains one of the challenges of EOR processes. Here, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to examine decane/water mixtures with surfactant additives in calcite and kaolinite mineral nanopores and characterize surfactant properties associated with increased fluid mobility and improved wettability in planar and constricted nanopore geometries. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants are found to modulate the contact angles of decane droplets and reduce the decane density on mineral surfaces. CTAC can enhance and unblock the flow of decane droplets through narrowing nanopores with constricted geometries while aiding in decane droplet shape deformation, whereas SDS leads to decane droplets stalling in front of constrictions in nanopores. We hypothesize that the inability of the cationic CTAC headgroup to form hydrogen bonds is one of the key factors leading to enhanced CTAC-coated decane flow through constricted nanopores. The obtained molecular view of equilibrium and dynamic properties of complex fluids typical of oil reservoirs can provide a basis for the future design of new molecules for EOR processes.

The Effect of Number of Arms on the Aggregation Behavior of Thermoresponsive Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Star Polymers

The thermoresponsive nature of aqueous solutions of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) star polymers containing 2, 3, 4, and 6 arms has been investigated by turbidity, dynamic light scattering, rheology, and rheo-SALS. Simulations of the thermosensitive nature of the single star polymers have also been conducted. Some of the samples form aggregates even at temperatures significantly below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAAM. Increasing concentration and number of arms promotes associations at low temperatures. When the temperature is raised, there is a competition between size increase due to enhanced aggregation and a size reduction caused by contraction. Monte Carlo simulations show that the single stars contract with increasing temperature, and that this contraction is more pronounced when the number of arms is increased. Some samples exhibit a minimum in the turbidity data after the initial increase at the cloud point. The combined rheology and rheo-SALS data suggest that this is due to a fragmentation of the aggregates followed by re-aggregation at even higher temperatures. Although the 6-arm star polymer aggregates more than the other stars at low temperatures, the more compact structure renders it less prone to aggregation at temperatures above the cloud point.

Thermo-responsive polymers: Applications of smart materials in drug delivery and tissue engineering

Synthetic polymers are attracting great attention in the last decades for their use in the biomedical field as nanovectors for controlled drug delivery, hydrogels and scaffolds enabling cell growth. Among them, polymers able to respond to environmental stimuli have been recently under growing consideration to impart a "smart" behavior to the final product, which is highly desirable to provide it with a specific dynamic and an advanced function. In particular, thermo-responsive polymers, materials able to undergo a discontinuous phase transition or morphological change in response to a temperature variation, are among the most studied. The development of the so-called controlled radical polymerization techniques has paved the way to a high degree of engineering for the polymer architecture and properties, which in turn brought to a plethora of sophisticated behaviors for these polymers by simply switching the external temperature. These can be exploited in many different fields, from separation to advanced optics and biosensors. The aim of this review is to critically discuss the latest advances in the development of thermo-responsive materials for biomedical applications, including a highly controlled drug delivery, mediation of cell growth and bioseparation. The focus is on the structural and design aspects that are required to exploit such materials for cutting-edge applications in the biomedical field.

A pH and salt dually responsive emulsion in the presence of amphiphilic macromolecules

A pH and salt dually responsive emulsion has been designed on the basis of a novel amphiphilic macromolecule. It was found that the water separation of an oil-in-water emulsion reached up to ∼60% after standing for 10 min at low pH. 2-(Diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEA) residues were found to induce the macromolecules to protonate and to be hydrophilic at pH values between 2 and 6, resulting in dewetting from oil droplet surfaces in water. Besides, the macromolecules form aggregates with different structures at the water/oil interface, depending on the pH value or salt concentration of the emulsion system, enabling the system to be demulsified in response to the pH or salt stimulus. The experimental results also showed that with the addition of aluminium chloride at 100 mg L^-1, the water separation was about 70% after 20 min. A possible mechanism with respect to demulsifying was proposed on the basis of an "ion bridge" among sodium acrylate (SA) residues, inducing the macromolecules to "cross-link" and become insoluble, and leading to oil/water separation. Furthermore, at a fixed pH of 5, addition of salt to the aqueous dispersion increased the degree of oil-water interfacial activity and batch emulsions were significantly unstable to coalesce at a low salinity of 25-50 mg L^-1. This finding presents a new manipulation on emulsion stability and potential applications in the fields of oil recovery, wastewater treatment, sludge removal, and so on.

Preparation of Thermo-Responsive and Cross-Linked Fluorinated Nanoparticles via RAFT-Mediated Aqueous Polymerization in Nanoreactors

In this work, a thermo-responsive and cross-linked fluoropolymer poly(2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl) methacrylate (PTFEMA) was successfully prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) mediated aqueous polymerization with a thermo-responsive diblock poly(dimethylacrylamide-b-N-isopropylacrylamide) (PDMA-b-PNIPAM) that performed a dual function as both a nanoreactor and macro-RAFT agent. The cross-linked polymer particles proved to be in a spherical-like structure of about 50 nm in diameter and with a relatively narrow particle size distribution. ¹H-NMR and ¹⁹F-NMR spectra showed that thermo-responsive diblock P(DMA-b-NIPAM) and cross-linked PTFEMA particles were successfully synthesized. Influence of the amount of ammonium persulfate (APS), the molar ratio of monomers to RAFT agent, influence of the amount of cross-linker on aqueous polymerization and thermo-responsive characterization of the particles are investigated. Monomer conversion increased from 44% to 94% with increasing the molar ratio of APS and P(DMA-b-NIPAM) from 1:9 to1:3. As the reaction proceeded, the particle size increased from 29 to 49 nm due to the consumption of TFEMA monomer. The size of cross-linked nanoparticles sharply decreased from 50.3 to 40.5 nm over the temperature range 14–44 °C, suggesting good temperature sensitivity for these nanoparticles.
