Abstract
Recent studies show good osteoinductive properties of polyurethanes modified with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). In this work, three types of POSS; propanediolisobutyl-POSS (PHI-POSS), disilanolisobutyl-POSS (DSI-POSS), and octahydroxybutyl-POSS (OCTA-POSS) were chemically incorporated into linear polyurethane based on an aliphatic isocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), to obtain new nanohybrid PU-POSS materials. The full conversion of POSS was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) spectra of the model reactions with pure HDI. The materials obtained were investigated by FTIR, SEM-EDS, and DSC. The DSC studies showed the thermoplasticity of the obtained materials and apparently good recovery. 30-day immersion in SBF (simulated body fluid) revealed an increase in the rate of deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAp) for the highest POSS loadings, resulting in thick layers of hydroxyapatite (~60-40 μm), and the Ca/P ratio 1.67 (even 1.785). The structure and properties of the inorganic layer depend on the type of POSS, the number of hard segments, and those containing POSS, which can be tailored by changing the HDI/poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) ratio. Furthermore, the obtained composites revealed good biocompatibility, as confirmed by cytotoxicity tests conducted on two cell lines; normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) and primary human osteoblasts (HOB). Adherent cells seeded on the tested materials showed viability even after a 48-h incubation. After this time, the population of viable, and proliferating cells exceeded 90%. Bioimaging studies have shown the fibroblast and osteoblast cells were well attached to the surface of the tested materials.

Abstract
We present a smart and efficient methodology for the synthesis of a variety of fluorinated silsesquioxanes (SQs) with diverse Si-O-Si core architecture. The protocol is based on an easy-to-handle and selective hydrosilylation reaction. An investigation on the placement of the reactive Si-HC=CH2 vs. Si-H in the silsesquioxane, as well as silane vs. olefin structure, respectively, on the progress and selectivity of the hydrosilylation process, was studied. Two alternative synthetic pathways for obtaining a variety of fluorine-functionalized silsesquioxanes were developed. As a result, a series of mono- and octa- T8 SQs, tri- 'open-cage' T7 SQs, in addition to di- and tetrafunctionalized double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) derivatives, were obtained selectively with high yields. All products were characterized by spectroscopic (NMR, FTIR) techniques. Selected samples were subjected to the measurements revealing their dielectric permittivity in a wide range of temperatures (from -100 °C to 100 °C) and electric field frequencies (100-106 Hz).

Abstract
Advanced organic-inorganic materials-composites, nanocomposites, and hybrids with various compositions offer unique properties required for biomedical applications. One of the most promising inorganic (nano)additives are polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS); their biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and phase separation ability that modifies the material porosity are fundamental properties required in modern biomedical applications. When incorporated, chemically or physically, into polyurethane matrices, they substantially change polymer properties, including mechanical properties, surface characteristics, and bioactivity. Hence, this review is dedicated to POSS-PU composites that have recently been developed for applications in the biomedical field. First, different modes of POSS incorporation into PU structure have been presented, then recent developments of PU/POSS hybrids as bio-active composites for scaffolds, cardiovascular stents, valves, and membranes, as well as in bio-imaging and cancer treatment, have been described. Finally, characterization and methods of modification routes of polyurethane-based materials with silsesquioxanes were presented.

Abstract
Ice formation on the aerodynamic surfaces of an aircraft is regarded as a major problem in the aerospace industry. Ice accumulation may damage parts, sensors and controllers and alter the aerodynamics of the airplane, leading to a range of undesired consequences, including flight delays, emergency landings, damaged parts and increased energy consumption. There are various approaches to reducing ice accretion, one of them being the application of icephobic coatings. In this work, commercially available polyurethane-based coatings were modified and deposited on NACA 0012 aircraft airfoils. A hybrid modification of polyurethane (PUR) topcoats was adopted by the addition of nanosilica and three-functional spherosilicates (a variety of silsesqioxane compound), which owe their unique properties to the presence of three different groups. The ice accretion on the manufactured nanocomposites was determined in an icing wind tunnel. The tests were performed under three different icing conditions: glaze ice, rime ice and mixed ice. Furthermore, the surface topography and wetting behavior (static contact angle and contact angle hysteresis) were investigated. It was found that the anti-icing properties of polyurethane nanocomposite coatings strongly depend on the icing conditions under which they are tested. Moreover, the addition of nanosilica and spherosilicates enabled the reduction of accreted ice by 65% in comparison to the neat topcoat.

Abstract
To convey novel properties to textile surface cotton-based fabrics were impregnated with solutions containing various chemical agents, such as butane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid or hydrolyzed organotrialkoxysilanes (3-amino)propyltriethoxysilane), (3-glycidylpropyl)-trimethoxysilane, (3-triethoxysilylpropyl)succinic acid anhydride, octyltriethoxysilane, and Dynasylan F8815 (fluoroalkylfunctional water-borne oligosiloxane). The as-prepared cotton specimens were dried and cured at elevated temperatures. As the curing process can be performed at different temperatures, the impregnated and dried cotton samples were studied by means of time-dependent ATR-FTIR spectroscopy in an attempt to get a closer insight into the process mechanism. The results make evident that the butane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid and (3-triethoxysilylpropyl)succinic acid anhydride reacts with the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose via a five-membered cyclic anhydride intermediate which is confirmed by vibration bands appearing at 1782 cm-1 (symmetric stretching vibration of the anhydride carbonyl group) and at 1861 cm-1 (antisymmetric stretching vibration of the anhydride carbonyl group).

Abstract
Coatings with the ability to minimize adhesion of insect residue and other debris are of great interest for future aircraft. These aircraft will exhibit increased fuel efficiency by maintaining natural laminar flow over greater wing chord distances. Successful coatings will mitigate the adhesion of debris on laminar flow surfaces that could cause a premature transition to turbulent flow. The use of surface modifying agents (SMA) that thermodynamically orient towards the air side of a coating can provide specific surface chemistry that may lead to a reduction of contaminate adhesion. Aluminum surfaces coated with urethane co-oligomers containing various amounts of pendant fluoroalky ether groups were prepared, characterized and tested for their abhesive properties. The coated surfaces were subjected to controlled impacts with wingless fruit flies (drosophila melanogaster) using both a benchtop wind tunnel and a larger-scaled wind tunnel test facility. Insect impacts were recorded and analyzed using high-speed digital photography and the remaining residues characterized using optical surface profilometry and compared to that of an aluminum control. It was determined that using fluorinated oligomers to chemically modify coating surfaces altered the adhesion properties relative to the adhesion of insect residues to the surface.

Abstract
Hybrid systems in which poly(ether sulfone) (PESU) chains are grafted to semifluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cores are expected to integrate the advantages of both fluoropolymers and POSS into the polymer system to yield excellent surface properties. For that purpose, we synthesized a novel octa-functional perfluorocyclopentenyl-POSS (PFCP-POSS), which was used as a "core" grafting point. Commercial PESU was successfully grafted to PFCP-POSS via the nucleophilic addition-elimination reaction between the phenolic chain ends and reactive PFCP moieties to yield a hybrid branched polymer possessing a semifluorinated POSS core. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, neutron reflectivity, and atomic force microscopy indicated that the preparation of nanostructured polymer surfaces occurs by migration of the low surface energy components (PFCP-POSS molecules), while POSS aggregation is suppressed by covalent attachment to the long PESU chains. The resulting PFCP-POSS modified PESU films were highly transparent and yielded hydrophobic surfaces with low surface energy and high modulus for potential applications in high performance coatings and composites.

Abstract
This paper presents a short overview of recent advances in the design and synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrids using silsesquioxane-based nanoparticles having nanometer size, relatively narrow size distribution, high functionalities, and various characteristic features, mainly focusing on our recent researches related to the subject. A highlight of this paper is the water-soluble silsesquioxane-based nanoparticles, including hydroxyl-functionalized and cationic silsesquioxanes, which were synthesized via the one-step condensation of the bulky triethoxysilane precursors. The design and synthesis of R-SiO1.5/SiO2and R-SiO1.5/TiO2hybrids by hydrolytic cocondensation of a triethoxysilane precursor and metal alkoxides are briefly introduced. This paper also deals with recent results in stimuli-responsive hybrids based on the water-soluble silsesquioxane nanoparticles and fluorinated and amphiphilic silsesquioxane hybrids.
