Self-assembly of intramolecular charge-transfer compounds into functional molecular systems

Ab initio electronic absorption spectra of para-nitroaniline in different solvents: Intramolecular charge transfer effects

Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effects of para-nitroaniline (pNA) in eight solvents (cyclohexane, toluene, acetic acid, dichloroethane, acetone, acetonitrile, dimethylsulfoxide, and water) are investigated extensively. The second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction, ADC(2), ab initio wave function is employed with the COSMO implicit and discrete multiscale solvation methods. We found a decreasing amine group torsion angle with increased solvent polarity and a linear correlation between the polarity and ADC(2) transition energies. The first absorption band involves π → π* transitions with ICT from the amine and the benzene ring to the nitro group, increased by 4%-11% for different solvation models of water compared to the vacuum. A second band of pNA is characterized for the first time. This band is primarily a local excitation on the nitro group, including some ICT from the amine group to the benzene ring that decreases with the solvent polarity. For cyclohexane, the COSMO implicit solvent model shows the best agreement with the experiment, while the explicit model has the best agreement for water.

Luminescent Ln-MOFs for Chemical Sensing Application on Biomolecules

At present, the application of rare-earth organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) in fluorescence sensing has entered rapid development and shown great potential in various analytical fields, such as environmental analysis, food analysis, drug analysis, and biological and clinical analysis by utilizing their internal porosity, tunable structural size, and energy transfer between rare-earth ions, ligands, and photosensitizer molecules. In addition, because the luminescence properties of rare-earth ions are highly dependent on the structural details of the coordination environment surrounding the rare-earth ions, and although their excitation lifetimes are long, they are usually not burst by oxygen and can provide an effective platform for chemical sensing. In order to further promote the development of fluorescence sensing technology based on Ln-MOFs, we summarize and review in detail the latest progress of the construction of Ln-MOF materials for fluorescence sensing applications and related sensor components, including design strategies, preparation methods, and modification considerations and initially propose the future development prospects and prospects.

A Strained Donor-Acceptor Carbon Nanohoop: Synthesis, Photophysical and Charge Transport Properties

Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel intramolecular donor-acceptor (D-A) system ([12]CPP-8TPAOMe) based on cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) grafted with eight di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino groups (TPAOMe) as donors. Compared to [12]CPP, D-A nanohoop exhibited significant changes in physical properties, including a large redshift (>78 nm) in the fluorescence spectrum and novel positive solvatofluorochromic properties with a maximum peak ranging from 484 nm to 546 nm. The potential applications of [12]CPP-8TPAOMe in electron- and hole-transport devices were further investigated, and its bipolar behavior as a charge transport active layer was clearly observed.

Layer-by-Layer Nanoparticle Assembly for Biomedicine: Mechanisms, Technologies, and Advancement via Acoustofluidics

The deposition of thin films plays a crucial role in surface engineering, tailoring structural modifications, and functionalization across diverse applications. Layer-by-layer self-assembly, a prominent thin-film deposition method, has witnessed substantial growth since its mid-20th-century inception, driven by the discovery of eligible materials and innovative assembly technologies. Of these materials, micro- and nanoscopic substrates have received far less interest than their macroscopic counterparts; however, this is changing. The catalogue of eligible materials, including nanoparticles, quantum dots, polymers, proteins, cells and liposomes, along with some well-established layer-by-layer technologies, have combined to unlock impactful applications in biomedicine, as well as other areas like food fortification, and water remediation. To access these fields, several well-established technologies have been used, including tangential flow filtration, fluidized bed, atomization, electrophoretic assembly, and dielectrophoresis. Despite the invention of these technologies, the field of particle layer-by-layer still requires further technological development to achieve a high-yield, automatable, and industrially ready process, a requirement for the diverse, reactionary field of biomedicine and high-throughput pharmaceutical industry. This review provides a background on layer-by-layer, focusing on how its constituent building blocks and bonding mechanisms enable unmatched versatility. The discussion then extends to established and recent technologies employed for coating micro- and nanoscopic matter, evaluating their drawbacks and advantages, and highlighting promising areas in microfluidic approaches, where one distinctly auspicious technology emerges, acoustofluidics. The review also explores the potential and demonstrated application of acoustofluidics in layer-by-layer technology, as well as analyzing existing acoustofluidic technologies beyond LbL coating in areas such as cell trapping, cell sorting, and multidimensional particle manipulation. Finally, the review concludes with future perspectives on layer-by-layer nanoparticle coating and the potential impact of integrating acoustofluidic methods.

Tandem Four-Component Reaction to Access Fused Polycycles Exhibiting Aggregation-Enhanced Through-Space Charge Transfer Emission

Rapid construction of new fluorescence emitters is essential in advancing synthetic luminescent materials. This study illustrated a piperidine-promoted reaction of chiral dialdehyde with benzoylacetonitrile and malonitrile, leading to the formation of the 6/6/7 fused cyclic product in good yield. The proposed reaction mechanism involves a dual condensation/cyclization process, achieving the formation of up to six bonds for fused polycycles. The single crystal structure analysis revealed that the fused cyclic skeleton contains face-to-face naphthyl and cyanoalkenyl motifs, which act as the electronic donor and acceptor, respectively, potentially resulting in through-space charge transfer (TSCT) emission. While the TSCT emissions were weak in solution, a notable increase in luminescence intensity was observed upon aggregation, indicating bright fluorescent light. A series of theoretical analyses further supported the possibility of spatial electronic communication based on frontier molecular orbitals, the distance of charge transfer, and reduced density gradient analysis. This work not only provides guidance for the one-step synthesis of complex polycycles, but also offers valuable insights into the design of aggregation-enhanced TSCT emission materials.

Island-Like Heterogeneous Interface Generating Tandem Toroidal Built-In Electric Field for Efficient Potassium Ions Diffusion

For large-size potassium accommodation, heterostructure usually suffers severe delamination and exfoliation at the interfaces due to different volume expansion of two-phase during charge/discharge process, resulting in the deconstruction of heterostructures and shortened lifespan of batteries. Here, an innovative strategy is proposed through constructing a microscopic heterostructure system containing copper quantum dots (Cu QDs) highly dispersed in the triphenyl-substituted triazine graphdiyne (TPTG) substrates (TPTG@CuQDs) to solve this problem. The copper quantum dots are uniformly anchored on TPTG substrates, generating a myriad of island-like heterogeneous structures, together with tandem toroidal built-in electric field (BIEF) between every micro heterointerface. The island-like heterostructure endows both benefits of exposed contact interface and robust architecture. Generated tandem toroidal BIEF provides efficient transport pathways with lower energy barriers, reducing the diffusion resistance and facilitating the reaction kinetics of potassium ions. When used as anode, the TPTG@CuQDs exhibit highly reversible capacity and low-capacity degradation (≈0.01% over 5560 cycles at 1 A g-1). Moreover, the TPTG@CuQDs-based full cell delivers an outstanding reversible capacity of ≈110 mAh g-1 over 800 cycles at 1 A g-1. This quantum-scale heterointerface construction strategy offers a new approach toward stable heterostructure design for the application of metal ion batteries.

Synthesis, DFT studies on a series of tunable quinoline derivatives

The synthesis, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, and photo physical characteristics of a range of quinoline derivatives have been described in the present work. Initially, the innovative derivatives are synthesized through the cyclization of 2-amino-5-nitrobenzophenone with either acetyl acetone or ethyl acetoacetate, followed by reducing the nitro group to an amine. Subsequently, these compounds undergo an acid-amine cross-coupling reaction. The investigation shows the DFT and photo physical properties of these substances. It is noteworthy that compound 6z exhibits the most remarkable Stokes shift among the fluorophores investigated. Furthermore, the research also provides insights into the electrophilicity index, Electronegativity, chemical potential, chemical hardness and softness properties. These properties are determined by utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and evaluating electron potential efficiency and using computational methods Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) to predict absorption spectra in molecules at the B3LYP/6-31G'(d,p) level/basis.

Mitochondria-targeted BODIPY dyes for small molecule recognition, bio-imaging and photodynamic therapy

Mitochondria are essential for a diverse array of biological functions. There is increasing research focus on developing efficient tools for mitochondria-targeted detection and treatment. BODIPY dyes, known for their structural versatility and excellent spectroscopic properties, are being actively explored in this context. Numerous studies have focused on developing innovative BODIPYs that utilize optical signals for imaging mitochondria. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the progress made in this field, aiming to investigate mitochondria-related biological events. It covers key factors such as design strategies, spectroscopic properties, and cytotoxicity, as well as mechanism to facilitate their future application in organelle imaging and targeted therapy. This work is anticipated to provide valuable insights for guiding future development and facilitating further investigation into mitochondria-related biological sensing and phototherapy.

Microcrystalline Nanofiber Electrode with Adaptive Intrinsic Structure and Microscopic Interface

A strategy of microcrystalline aggregation is proposed to fabricate energy storage electrode with outstanding capacity and stability. Carbon-rich electrode (BDTG) functionalized with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene units and butadiyne segments are prepared. The linear conjugate chains pack as microcrystalline nanofibers on nanoscale, which further aggregates to form a porous interpenetrating network. The microcrystalline aggregation feature of BDTG exhibit stable structure during long cycling test, revealing the following advantage in structure and property. The stretchable butadiyne linker facilitates reversible adsorption and desorption of Li with the aid of adjacent sulfur heteroatom. The alkyne-alkene transition exhibits intrinsic structural stability of microcrystalline region in BDTG electrodes. Meanwhile, alkynyl groups and sulfur heteroatoms on the surface of BDTG nanofibers participate in the formation of microscopic interface, providing a stable interfacial contact between BDTG electrodes and adjacent electrolyte. As a proof-of-concept, BDTG-based electrode shows high capacity (1430 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1) and excellent cycle performance (8000 cycles under 5 A g-1) in half-cell of lithium-ion batteries, and a reversible capacity of 120 mAh g-1 is obtained under the current density of 2 C in full-cell. This work shows microcrystalline aggregation is beneficial to realize adaptive intrinsic structure and interface contact during the charge-discharge process.

On-surface synthesis of two types of cyano-substituted polyfluorene derivatives via Ullmann coupling on Au(111)

Using 4-(3,6-dibromo-9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzonitrile (DBCB) precursors, we successfully constructed two types of cyano-substituted polymers on Au(111) by the molecular beam epitaxy method. According to the geometry, the two polymers are referred to as w-type polymers composed of cis-dimers and z-type polymers composed of trans-dimers. The intermediate dimers and final polymers were well characterized by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (HR-STM). Moreover, the productivities of these two polymers can be controlled by adjusting the heating rate and different treatment methods. High heating rates and hot deposition can provide more ample space and time for molecular diffusion, which is conducive to the formation of w-type polymers with relatively low density. In addition, by combining scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have shown that the addition of CN groups reduces the band gap of the two polymers. Our investigation thus shows the controllable construction of nanostructures through efficient surface synthesis parameters and reveals the potential of using functional groups as tools to modify the electronic properties of polymers.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bola-Amphiphilic Porphyrin-Perylenebisimide Architectures

We report on the synthesis and characterization of a family of three water-soluble bola-amphiphilic zinc-porphyrin-perylenebisimide triads containing oligo carboxylic-acid capped Newkome dendrons in the periphery. Variations of the perylenebisimide (PBI) core geometry and dendron size (G1 and G2 dendrons with 3- and 9-carboxylic acid groups respectively) allow for tuning the supramolecular aggregation behavior with respect to variation of the molecular architecture. The triads show good solubility in basic aqueous media and aggregation to supramolecular assemblies. Theoretical investigations at the DFT level of theory accompanied by electrochemical measurements unravel the geometric and electronic structure of the amphiphiles. UV/Vis and fluorescence titrations with varying amounts of THF demonstrate disaggregation.

Star-shaped small donor molecules based on benzotriindole for efficient organic solar cells: a DFT study

CONTEXT

The purpose of the S01-S05 series of end-capped modified donor chromophores is to amplify the energy conversion efficiency of organic solar cells. Using quantum chemical modeling, the photophysical and photoelectric characteristics of the S01-S05 geometries are examined.

METHOD

The influence of side chain replacement on multiple parameters, including the density of states (DOS), molecular orbital analysis (FMOS), exciton-binding energy (Eb), molecular electrostatic potential analysis, dipole moment (μ), and photovoltaic characteristics including open circuit voltage (VOC), and PCE at minimal energy state geometries, has been investigated employing density functional theory along with TD-DFT analysis. The molar absorption coefficient (λmax) of all the proposed compounds (S01-S05) was efficiently enhanced by the terminal acceptor alteration technique, as demonstrated by their scaling up with the reference molecule (SR). Among all molecules, S04 has shown better absorption properties with a red shift in absorption having λmax at 845 nm in CHCl3 solvent and narrow energy gap (EG) 1.83 eV with least excitation energy (Ex) of 1.4657 eV. All created donors exhibited improved FF and VOC than the SR, which significantly raised PCE and revealed their great efficiency as OSC. Consequently, the results recommended these star-shaped molecules as easily attainable candidates for constructing extremely efficient OSCs.

Keto-Adamantane-Based Macrocycle Crystalline Supramolecular Assemblies Showing Selective Vapochromism to Tetrahydrofuran

Here, we report the synthesis of adamantane-based macrocycle 2 by combining adamantane building blocks with π-donor 1,3-dimethoxy-benzene units. An unpredictable keto-adamantane-based macrocycle 3 was obtained by the oxidation of 2 using DDQ as an oxidant. Moreover, a new type of macrocyclic molecule-based CT cocrystal was prepared through exo-wall CT interactions between 3 and DDQ. The cocrystal material showed selective vapochromism behavior towards THF, specifically, among nine volatile organic solvents commonly used in the laboratory. Powder X-ray diffraction; UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy; 1H NMR; and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that color changes are attributed to the vapor-triggered decomplexation of cocrystals.

Self-Assembly of Functionalized Twistarenes into Supramolecular Assemblies with Chiroptical Property and Photoconductive Behavior

A pair of novel chiral 1-phenylethylamine-modified twistarenes (4 and 11; compound 4 = 9,14-di-tert-butyl-7,16-diphenyl-2-(1-phenylethyl)-1H-benzo[8',9']triphenyleno[2',3':6,7]fluoreno[2,1,9-def]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione) have been synthesized and characterized, and how the solvent component affects the chirality transfer of their self-assembled processes is investigated in mixtures with THF and H2O. The ordered assembly of 11 exhibits circular dichroism response. In addition, both 11a and 11b display positive photoconducting behavior.

Polymerization-Mediated Through-Space Charge Transfer: An Emerging Strategy for Light-Emitting Materials

Through-space charge transfer (TSCT) has attracted increasing attention owing to its great potential in designing efficient light-emitting molecules and polymers. Complementary to through-bond charge transfer and Förster resonance energy transfer, TSCT offers an alternative approach for the manipulation of molecular fluorescence. Recently, the synergy between TSCT and polymer systems through polymerization-mediated charge transfer has fostered the advancements of innovative light-emitting functional materials featuring thermally activated delayed fluorescence and/or aggregation-induced emission. This perspective highlights the significant progress in tailoring emission properties through structural engineering of donor and acceptor groups within polymeric systems, leveraging the TSCT mechanism. This strategy has transcended the limitations of traditional charge transfer systems with its tolerance to extended donor-acceptor distance, paving the way for novel applications beyond organic light-emitting diodes. The discussion concludes with a forward-looking analysis of potential future research trajectories in the field of polymerization-mediated charge transfer for developing next-generation light-emitting materials.

Perspectives on push-pull chromophores derived from click-type [2 + 2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization reactions of electron-rich alkynes and electron-deficient alkenes

Various push-pull chromophores can be synthesized in a single and atom-economical step through [2 + 2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) reactions involving diverse electron-rich alkynes and electron-deficient alkenes. In this review, a comprehensive investigation of the recent and noteworthy advancements in the research on push-pull chromophores prepared via the [2 + 2] CA-RE reaction is conducted. In particular, an overview of the physicochemical properties of the family of these compounds that have been investigated is provided to clarify their potential for future applications.

Polarity-Induced Morphological Transformation with Tunable Optical Output of Terpyridine-Phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-Based Ligand and Its Zn(II) Complexes with I-V Characteristics

Self-assembled nanostructures obtained from various functional π-conjugated organic molecules have been able to draw substantial interest due to their inherent optical properties, which are imperative for developing optoelectronic devices, multiple-color-emitting devices with color-tunable displays, and optical sensors. These π-conjugated molecules have proven their potential employment in various organic electronic applications. Therefore, the stimuli-responsive fabrication of these π-conjugated systems into a well-ordered assembly is extremely crucial to tuning their inherent optical properties for improved performance in organic electronic applications. To this end, herein, we have designed and synthesized a functional π-conjugated molecule (TP) having phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole with terpyridine substitution at the 2 position and its corresponding metal complexes (TPZn and (TP)2Zn). By varying the polarity of the self-assembly medium, TP, TPZn, and (TP)2Zn are fabricated into well-ordered superstructures with morphological individualities. However, this medium polarity-induced self-assembly can tune the inherent optical properties of TP, TPZn, and (TP)2Zn and generate multiple fluorescence colors. Particularly, this property makes them useful for organic electronic applications, which require adjustable luminescence output. More importantly, in 10% aqueous-THF medium, TPZn exhibited H-type aggregation-induced white light emission and behaved as a single-component white light emitter. The experimentally obtained results of the solvent polarity-induced variation in optical properties as well as self-assembly patterns were further confirmed by theoretical investigation using density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, we investigated the I-V characteristics, both vertical and horizontal, using ITO and glass surfaces coated with TP, TPZn, and (TP)2Zn, respectively, and displayed maximum current density for the TPZn-coated surface with the order of measured current density TPZn > TP > (TP)2Zn. This observed order of current density measurements was also supported by a direct band gap calculation associated with the frontier molecular orbitals using the Tauc plot. Hence, solvent polarity-induced self-assembly behavior with adjustable luminescence output and superior I-V characteristics of TPZn make it an exceptional candidate for organic electronic applications and electronic device fabrication.

A comprehensive analysis of charge transfer effects on donor-pyrene (bridge)-acceptor systems using different substituents

The alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pyrene has photophysical properties that can be tuned with different donor and acceptor substituents. Recently, a D (donor)-Pyrene (bridge)-A (acceptor) system, DPA, with the electron donor N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA), and the electron acceptor trifluoromethylphenyl (TFM), was investigated by means of time-resolved spectroscopic measurements (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2021, 12, 2226-2231). DPA shows great promise for potential applications in organic electronic devices. In this work, we used the ab initio second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction method ADC(2) to investigate the excited-state properties of a series of analogous DPA systems, including the originally synthesized DPAs. The additionally investigated substituents were amino, fluorine, and methoxy as donors and nitrile and nitro groups as acceptors. The focus of this work was on characterizing the lowest excited singlet states regarding charge transfer (CT) and local excitation (LE) characters. For the DMA-pyrene-TFM system, the ADC(2) calculations show two initial electronic states relevant for interpreting the photodynamics. The bright S1 state is locally excited within the pyrene moiety, and an S2 state is localized ~0.5 eV above S1 and characterized as a donor to pyrene CT state. HOMO and LUMO energies were employed to assess the efficiency of the DPA compounds for organic photovoltaics (OPVs). HOMO-LUMO and optical gaps were used to estimate power conversion and light-harvesting efficiencies for practical applications in organic solar cells. Considering the systems using smaller D/A substituents, compounds with the strong acceptor NO2 substituent group show enhanced CT and promising properties for use in OPVs. Some of the other compounds with small substituents are also found to be competitive in this regard.

π-Extended Hexapyrrolylbenzenes: Exploring Charge-Transfer Phenomena in Donor-Acceptor Propellers

A family of propeller-shaped donor-acceptor hexapyrrolylbenzenes (HPBs) were designed and synthesized by sequential nucleophilic substitution of hexafluorobenzene with π-extended pyrroles. In particular, four hybrids were obtained, containing various combinations of electron-rich and electron-poor acenaphthylene-fused pyrroles. Additionally, to probe the efficiency of ortho transfer interactions, a system was designed containing unique donor and acceptor subunits spatially separated with four unfunctionalized pyrroles. DFT calculations showed propeller-shaped geometries of all HPB molecules and separation of frontier molecular orbitals between donor and acceptor subunits. Steady-state and time-resolved photophysical measurements revealed charge-transfer (CT) character of the emission with strong positive dependence on solvent polarity. The principal CT pathway involves ortho-positioned pairs of donors and acceptors and requires bending of the acceptor in the excited state.

Photoinduced asymmetric charge trapping in a symmetric tetraazapyrene-fused bis(tetrathiafulvalene) conjugate

In fused donor-acceptor (D-A) ensembles, rapid charge recombination often occurs because the D and A units are spatially close and strongly coupled. To the best of our knowledge, a long-lived charge separated (CS) state is still elusive in such systems. The results presented here show that symmetric annulation of two tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) donors to a central tetraazapyrene (TAP) acceptor via two quinoxaline units leads to a CS state lifetime of a few ns. A detailed study of the electronic interactions between TTF and TAP units in the ground and excited states was performed and compared with the asymmetric counterpart by cyclic voltammetry, optical absorption and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the photoinduced asymmetric charge trapping between two TTFs significantly stabilizes the CS state, which is also verified theoretically.

Superior Photophysical and Photosensitizing Properties of Nanoaggregates of Weakly Emissive Dyes for Use in Bioimaging and Photodynamic Therapy

The development of luminescent dyes based on 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobuta-1,3-dienes (TCBDs) is an active research area, and a quantum yield (ΦF) of 7.8% has been achieved so far in cyclohexane by appending a fluorophore. Our novel method radically refines weakly emissive 2,3-disubstituted TCBD (phenyl-TCBD 1) (ΦF = 2.3% in CH3CN) into a water-soluble, biocompatible nanoformulation as highly emissive aggregates 1NPs ⊂ PF-127 with ΦF = 7.9% in H2O and without fluorophore conjugation. Characterization of 1NPs ⊂ PF-127 was carried out using various spectroscopic techniques, and its predominant size was found to be 80-100 nm according to transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering techniques. Spectroscopic studies including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that aggregated phenyl-TCBD particles were encapsulated in a nonluminescent triblock copolymer (PF-127)-based nanomicelles with the TCBD entrapment efficiency of 77%. With increasing water fraction, the phenyl-TCBD nanoaggregates exhibited a 3-fold higher quantum yield, a greater lifetime, and a red shift (155 nm). This remarkable enhancement in red emissivity enabled them to be used as a bioprobe for bioimaging applications and in photodynamic therapy to selectively target cancer cell lines with singlet oxygen generation capability (ΦΔ = 0.25). According to the MTT assay, compared to the native molecular form (1229 nM), the aggregated 1NPs ⊂ PF-127 (13.51 nM) exhibited dose-dependent cell death when exposed to light with 91-fold increased activity. The histoarchitectures of various vital organs (liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, and spleen) were intact when tested for in vivo biocompatibility. This study has significant implications for developing nonplanar push-pull chromophore-based dyes as biosensors and with potential applications beyond bioimaging.

Improved lipophilic probe for visualizing lipid droplets in erastin-induced ferroptosis

Studying the viscosity of lipid droplets (LDs) provides insights into various diseases associated with LD viscosity. Ferroptosis is one such process in which LD viscosity increases due to the abnormal accumulation of lipid ROS (reactive oxygen species) caused by peroxidation. For investigating the LD imaging and ferroptosis, we developed two molecules (NNS and DNS) that show significant Stokes shifts (182-232 nm) and utilized them for sub-cellular imaging. Excellent localization is noted with the lipid droplets. Subsequently, DNS was used to monitor the variations in the LD viscosity during erastin-induced ferroptosis followed by ferroptosis inhibition. Additionally, we explored variations in the LD quantity, size, and accumulation when subjected to oleic acid stimulation. Extensive DFT and TDDFT investigations have been employed to understand the effect of NO2 substitution on the linear and branched molecular derivatives. Our results with the improved lipophilic fluorophore, exhibiting excellent colocalization with LDs, offer valuable insights into sensing erastin-induced ferroptosis and have the potential for real-time diagnostic applications.

Introducing an orthogonally polarized electron-rich alkene: synthesis of a zwitterionic boron-containing π-conjugated system

The synthesis of an alkene is reported which is concurrently twisted (twist angle = 86.6(8)°), push-pull (dipole moment = 7.48 D), and electron-rich (E1/2 = -1.45 V and -0.52 V vs. Fc/Fc+) in nature, comprising a unique trinity combination for the alkene class of compounds. Subsequently, this newly synthesized alkene-motif was used as a donor for the synthesis of a zwitterionic boron-containing π-conjugated compound (dipole moment = 12.17 D) through an intramolecular charge transfer process exploiting the π-conjugated donor-acceptor system.

Disilane-bridged architectures: an emerging class of molecular materials

Disilanes are organosilicon compounds that contain saturated Si-Si bonds. The structural characteristics of Si-Si single bonds resemble those of C-C single bonds, but their electronic structure is more similar to that of C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bonds, as Si-Si bonds have a higher HOMO energy level. These organosilicon compounds feature unique intramolecular σ electron delocalization, low ionization potentials, polarizable electronic structure, and σ-π interaction. It has been demonstrated that the employment of disilane units (Si-Si) is a versatile and effective approach for finely adjusting the photophysical properties of organic materials in both solution and solid states. In this review, we present and discuss the structure, properties, and relationships of novel σ-π-conjugated hybrid architectures with saturated Si-Si σ bonds. The application of disilane-bridged σ-conjugated compounds as optoelectronic materials, multifunctional solid-state emitters, CPL, and non-linear optical and stimuli-responsive materials is also reviewed.

π-Extended Pyrazinepyrene-Fused Zinc Phthalocyanines: Synthesis and Excited-State Charge Separation Involving Coordinated C60

A series of pyrazinepyrene-fused zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPc-Pyr_n) have been newly synthesized by reacting quinoxaline and the corresponding diamino-functionalized phthalocyanines as a new class of π-extended phthalocyanine systems. Bathochromically shifted absorption as a function of the number of pyrazinepyrene entities due to extended π-conjugation and quenched fluorescence due to the presence of fused pyrazinepyrene were witnessed. The electronic structures of these phthalocyanines were probed by systematic computational and electrochemical studies, while the excited-state properties were examined by pump-probe spectroscopies operating at the femto- and nanosecond time scales. Similar to the excited singlet lifetimes, the excited triplet states also revealed diminished lifetimes with an increased number of pyrazinepyrene entities. Further, the coordinatively unsaturated zinc in these molecules was coordinated with phenyl imidazole-functionalized fullerene, ImC₆₀, to form a new series of donor-acceptor conjugates. Upon full characterization of these conjugates, the occurrence of excited-state charge separation was established by transient pump-probe spectroscopy, covering wide temporal and spatial regions. The lifetime of the final charge-separated states was ∼2 ns and decreased with an increase in the number of fused pyrazinepyrene units.

Macrocycle-Based Crystalline Supramolecular Assemblies Built with Intermolecular Charge-Transfer Interactions

Synthetic macrocycles have served as principal tools for supramolecular chemistry, have greatly extended the scope of organic charge transfer (CT) complexes, and have proved to be of great practical value in the solid state during the past few years. In this Minireview, we summarize the research progress on the macrocycle-based crystalline supramolecular assemblies primarily driven by intermolecular CT interactions (a.k.a. macrocycle-based crystalline CT assemblies, MCCAs for short), which are classified by their donor-acceptor (D-A) constituent elements, including simplex macrocyclic hosts, heterogeneous macrocyclic hosts, and host-guest D-A pairs. Particular attention will be focused on their diverse functions and applications, as well as the underlying CT mechanisms from the perspective of crystal engineering. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects are outlined.

Steering On-Surface Reactions by Kinetic and Thermodynamic Strategies

On-surface synthesis has emerged as a powerful tool to fabricate various functional low-dimensional nanostructures with atomic precision, thus becoming a promising platform for the preparation of next-generation semiconductive, magnetic, and topological nanodevices. With the aid of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy, both the chemical structures and physical properties of the obtained products can be well characterized. A major challenge in this field is how to efficiently steer reaction pathways and improve the yield/quality of products. To address this problem, in recent years various kinetic and thermodynamic strategies have been successfully employed to control on-surface reactions. In this Perspective, we discuss these strategies in view of basic reaction steps on surfaces, including molecular adsorption, diffusion, and reaction. We hope this Perspective will help readers to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms of on-surface reactions and rationally design reaction procedures for the fabrication of high-quality functional nanomaterials on surfaces.

Adaptive 2D and Pseudo-2D Systems: Molecular, Polymeric, and Colloidal Building Blocks for Tailored Complexity

Two-dimensional and pseudo-2D systems come in various forms. Membranes separating protocells from the environment were necessary for life to occur. Later, compartmentalization allowed for the development of more complex cellular structures. Nowadays, 2D materials (e.g., graphene, molybdenum disulfide) are revolutionizing the smart materials industry. Surface engineering allows for novel functionalities, as only a limited number of bulk materials have the desired surface properties. This is realized via physical treatment (e.g., plasma treatment, rubbing), chemical modifications, thin film deposition (using both chemical and physical methods), doping and formulation of composites, or coating. However, artificial systems are usually static. Nature creates dynamic and responsive structures, which facilitates the formation of complex systems. The challenge of nanotechnology, physical chemistry, and materials science is to develop artificial adaptive systems. Dynamic 2D and pseudo-2D designs are needed for future developments of life-like materials and networked chemical systems in which the sequences of the stimuli would control the consecutive stages of the given process. This is crucial to achieving versatility, improved performance, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Here, we review the advancements in studies on adaptive, responsive, dynamic, and out-of-equilibrium 2D and pseudo-2D systems composed of molecules, polymers, and nano/microparticles.

Synthesis and Properties of Norphthalocyanines Functionalized with a Tetrathiacrown Ether-Tetrathiafulvalene Substituent

To construct novel ion receptors and D-A self-assembly systems for materials with better functions, the annulation of a tetrathiafulvalene donor with a magnesium norphthalocyanine core via a flexible tetrathiacrown ether bridge afforded a new triad 1. The structure of this product was characterized by 1H NMR and infrared spectroscopy, time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The optical and electrochemical properties were investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The complex of triad 1 and 2,3,5,6- tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane produced electron transfer with a radical cationic character, as confirmed by UV-Vis and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Furthermore, the target compound presented evident intramolecular charge-transfer interactions in ground states, which were explained using density functional theory. Furthermore, norphthalocyanine 1 was able to coordinate Ag⁺ through the peripheral ligating oxathiaether crown.

Highly Efficient Luminescence from Charge-Transfer Gold Nanoclusters Enabled by Lewis Acid

Understanding the complicated intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) behaviors of nanomaterials is crucial to the development of high-quality nanoluminophores for various applications. However, the ICT process in molecule-like metal nanoclusters has been rarely explored. Herein, a proton binding-induced enhanced ICT state is discovered in 6-aza-2-thiothymine-protected gold nanoclusters (ATT-AuNCs). Such an excited-state electron transfer process gives rise to the weakened and red-shifted photoluminescence of these nanoclusters. By the joint use of this newfound ICT mechanism and a restriction of intramolecular motion (RIM) strategy, a red shift in the emission maxima of 30 nm with 27.5-fold higher fluorescence quantum efficiency is achieved after introducing rare-earth scandium ion (Sc³⁺) into ATT-AuNCs. Furthermore, it is found that upon the addition of Sc³⁺, the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) rate from ATT-AuNCs to minocycline is largely accelerated by forming a donor-bridge-acceptor structure. This paper offers a simple method to modulate the luminescent properties of metal nanoclusters for the rational design of next-generation sensing platforms.

Chemically Driven Rotatory Molecular Machines

Molecular machines are at the frontier of biology and chemistry. The ability to control molecular motion and emulating the movement of biological systems are major steps towards the development of responsive and adaptive materials. Amazing progress has been seen for the design of molecular machines including light-induced unidirectional rotation of overcrowded alkenes. However, the feasibility of inducing unidirectional rotation about a single bond as a result of chemical conversion has been a challenging task. In this Review, an overview of approaches towards the design, synthesis, and dynamic properties of different classes of atropisomers which can undergo controlled switching or rotation under the influence of a chemical stimulus is presented. They are categorized as molecular switches, rotors, motors, and autonomous motors according to their type of response. Furthermore, we provide a future perspective and challenges focusing on building sophisticated molecular machines.

An intramolecular-locked strategy for designing nonlinear optical materials with remarkable first hyperpolarizability

To meet the expanding demands of high performance nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, an unprecedented intramolecular-locked strategy is proposed to design NLO materials with remarkable static first hyperpolarizability (β₀). This strategy means that importing a large steric hindrance group diphenylmethane (DPM) decreases the torsion angles (θ) between the donor {triphenylamine (TPA)} and acceptor {9-H-thioxanthen-9-one-10,10-dioxide (TXO)} units, as well as between the donor (TPA) and π-bridge (benzene) fragments. The decrease of θ can accelerate the intramolecular charge transfer and enhance the contributions of the TPA, TXO and quinoxaline-6,7-dicarbo-nitrile (QCN) fragments to the axial component of the β₀ value, and then the β₀ values of TPA-TXO (β₀ = 10 762 au) and TPA-QCN (β₀ = 22 495 au) are increased by 14.9% and 34.4%, respectively. Overall, the intramolecular-locked strategy is very effective for designing high performance NLO materials.

Controlled Growth and Self-Assembly of Multiscale Organic Semiconductor

Currently, organic semiconductors (OSs) are widely used as active components in practical devices related to energy storage and conversion, optoelectronics, catalysis, and biological sensors, etc. To satisfy the actual requirements of different types of devices, chemical structure design and self-assembly process control have been synergistically performed. The morphology and other basic properties of multiscale OS components are governed on a broad scale from nanometers to macroscopic micrometers. Herein, the up-to-date design strategies for fabricating multiscale OSs are comprehensively reviewed. Related representative works are introduced, applications in practical devices are discussed, and future research directions are presented. Design strategies combining the advances in organic synthetic chemistry and supramolecular assembly technology perform an integral role in the development of a new generation of multiscale OSs.

Twisted intramolecular charge transfer of nitroaromatic push-pull chromophores

The structural changes during the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of nitroaromatic chromophores, 4-dimethylamino-4′-nitrobiphenyl (DNBP) and 4-dimethylamino-4′-nitrostilbene (DNS) were investigated by femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) with both high spectral and temporal resolutions. The kinetically resolved Raman spectra of DNBP and DNS in the locally-excited and charge-transferred states of the S₁ state appear distinct, especially in the skeletal vibrational modes of biphenyl and stilbene including ν_8a and ν_C=C. The ν_8a of two phenyls and the ν_C=C of the central ethylene group (only for stilbene), which are strongly coupled in the planar geometries, are broken with the twist of nitrophenyl group with the ICT. Time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy measurements and the time-dependent density functional theory simulations support the ultrafast ICT dynamics of 220–480 fs with the twist of nitrophenyl group occurring in the S₁ state of the nitroaromatic chromophores. While the ICT of DNBP occurs via a barrier-less pathway, the ICT coordinates of DNS are strongly coupled to several low-frequency out-of-phase deformation modes relevant to the twist of the nitrophenyl group.

Intramolecular charge transfer of a push-pull chromophore with restricted internal rotation of an electron donor

Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-[2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-benzo[ij]quinolizin-9-yl)vinyl]-4H-pyran (LD688) in DMSO solution was investigated by femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) with 403 nm excitation. The molecular structure of LD688 is similar to that of a well-known push-pull chromophore, 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), except that the internal rotation of the electron-donating dimethylamino group is restricted with the introduction of the julolidine moiety. Upon photo-excitation, LD688 shows an ultrafast (1.0 ps) ICT followed by the vibrational relaxation (3-8 ps) in the charge-transfer (CT) state. Two distinct Raman spectra of LD688 in the locally excited (LE) and CT state of the S₁ state were retrieved from FSRS measurements. Based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations, a "twisted" julolidine geometry of LD688 was proposed for the ICT state, which was further confirmed in comparison to the spectral changes of several push-pull chromophores with the π-conjugated backbone of stilbene, biphenyl, styrylpyran, styrylpyridinium, and styrene in terms of the skeletal vibrational modes of ν_19b,py, ν_CC,ph, and ν_CN.

Fluorescent probes for targeting endoplasmic reticulum: design strategies and their applications

Advances in developing organic fluorescent probes and fluorescence imaging techniques have enhanced our understanding of cell biology. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a dynamic structure that plays a crucial role in protein synthesis, post-translational modifications, and lipid metabolism. The malfunction of ER contributes to several physiological and pathological conditions. Therefore, the investigations on the imaging and role of ER have attracted a lot of attention. Due to their simplicity, synthetic tunability, photostability, high quantum yields, easier cellular uptake, and lower cytotoxicity, organic fluorophores offer invaluable tools for the precision targeting of various cellular organelles and probe ER dynamics. The precision staining is made possible by incorporating specific functional groups having preferential and local organelle biomolecular interactions. For instance, functional moieties such as methyl sulfonamide, sulfonylurea, and pentafluorophenyl assist in ER targeting and thus have become essential tools to probe a deeper understanding of their dynamics. Furthermore, dual-function fluorescent probes that simultaneously image ER and detect specific physiological parameters or biological analytes were achieved by introducing special recognition or chemically reactive sites. This article attempts to comprehensively capture various design strategies currently employed by researchers utilizing small organic molecules to target the ER and detect specific analytes.
