Abstract
Non-peripherally octakis-substituted phthalocyanines (npPc’s), MPc(C12H25)8 with M = 2H (3) or Zn (4), as well as peripherally octakis-substituted phthalocyanines (pPc’s) with M = Zn (6), Mg (7) and 2H (8), were synthesized by cyclotetramerization of 3,6- (2) or 4,5-bis(dodecyl)phthalonitrile (5), template cyclotetramerization of precursor phthalonitriles in the presence of Zn or Mg, metal insertion into metal-free phthalocyanines, and removal of Mg or Zn from the phthalocyaninato coordination cavity. The more effective synthetic route towards pPc 8 was demetalation of 7. npPc’s were more soluble than pPc’s. The Q-band λmax of npPc’s was red-shifted with ca. 18 nm, compared to that of pPc’s. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) differentiated between N–H, Nmeso and Ncore nitrogen atoms for metal-free phthalocyanines. Binding energies were ca. 399.6, 398.2 and 397.7 eV respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) also showed zinc phthalocyanines 4 and 6 have four equivalent Nmeso and four equivalent N–Zn core nitrogens. In contrast, the Mg phthalocyanine 7 has two sets of core N atoms. One set involves two Ncore atoms strongly coordinated to Mg, while the other encompasses the two remaining Ncore atoms that are weakly associated with Mg. pPc’s 6, 7, and 8 have cyclic voltammetry features consistent with dimerization to form [Pc][Pc+] intermediates upon oxidation but npPc’s 3 and 4 do not. Metalation of metal-free pPc’s and npPc’s shifted all redox potentials to lower values.

Abstract
A fluorophore modified nanoparticle was developed that can only fluoresce when a specific environmental parameter interacts with the system. The model system consisted of an azide modified bovine serum albumin (azBSA) that had been covalently attached to an alkyne modified silicon phthalocyanine (alSiPc) derivative through a copper catalyzed azide/alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition (click reaction). The azBSA/alSiPc assembly was then clicked to a ca. 67 nm poly(propargyl acrylate) (PA) nanoparticle (PA/azBSA/alSiPc). The resulting particles did not exhibit any florescence when the alSiPc was excited. Incubating the particles at 37 °C for 30 min with a proteolytic enzyme (trypsin) degraded the linking BSA and resulted in the appearance of florescence that was attributed to a "free" silicon phthalocyanine. The PA/azBSA/alSiPc particles were incubated with human non-small cell lung cancer cells (A549) and the florescence of the initially quenched particles was achieved with cellular uptake.

Abstract
A novel subphthalocyanine containing bulky substituents placed at its peripheral sites (i.e. 2,3,9,10,16,17-hexa(2′,6′-di-iso-propylphenoxy)boron subphthalocyanine) was prepared and assessed for supramolecular binding with C[Formula: see text], through crystallisation and fluorescence studies. Three different crystal polymorphs of the subphthalocyanine were obtained that showed inclusion of a single aromatic solvent molecule within the well-defined cavity of the molecule but complete exclusion of C[Formula: see text]. Analysis of the crystal structures indicated that the bowl-shaped cavity of the subphthalocyanine molecule was only accessible to small molecules due to the steric congestion surrounding the macrocycle, which results in hindered rotation of the substituents on the NMR timescale. Enhanced solubility, up to 42.0 g/L in common organic solvents, was demonstrated consistent with the crystal structures which are dominated by relatively weak intermolecular interactions, which allow solvent molecules to play a role in crystallisation.

Abstract
Methods for the preparation of a variety of covalently linked Pc–Pc homo-dimers (ortho and meta), heterodimers and Pc–Pc triads linked through NH and bridged viaN-aryl (phenyl) groups were developed. The palladium catalyzed intermolecular carbon–nitrogen coupling reaction (Buchwald–Hartwig) between Pc-iodo and Pc-amino phthalocyanine derivatives was used for these studies. Photophysical data reveal energy transfer between the Pc moieties resulting in the appearance of new red-shift Q-bands that correlate to the planarity and dihedral angle between the subunits. The shift and the nature of Q-band depend on the number of phenyl groups, the number of Pc and the position of attachment on the phenyl ring.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising therapeutic modality which uses a photosensitizer to capture visible light resulting in phototoxicity in the irradiated region. PDT has been used in a number of pathological indications, including tumor. A key desirable feature of the photosensitizer is the high phototoxicity on tumor cells but not on normal cells. In this study, we conjugate a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to a photosensitizer, Zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc), in order to enhance its specificity to breast cancer, which over-expresses GnRH receptor. ZnPc has unique advantages over other photosensitizers, but is difficult to derivatize and purify as a single isomer. We previously developed a straight-forward way to synthesize mono-substituted β-carboxy-phthalocyanine zinc (ZnPc-COOH). Photophysical and photochemical parameters of this ZnPc-GnRH conjugate including fluorescence quantum yield (Фf), fluorescence decay time (τs) and singlet oxygen quantum yield (ФΔ) were evaluated and found comparable with that of ZnPc, indicating that addition of a GnRH peptide does not significantly alter the generation of singlet oxygen from ZnPc. Cellular uptakes and phototoxicities of this conjugate were tested and found significantly enhanced on human breast cancer cell lines overexpressing GnRH receptors (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells) compared to cells with low levels of GnRH receptors, such as human embryonic lung fibroblast (HELF) and human liver carcinoma (HepG2) cells. In addition, the cellular uptake of this conjugate toward MCF-7 cells were found clearly alleviated by a GnRH receptor blocker Cetrorelix, suggesting that the cellular uptake of this conjugate was GnRH receptor-mediated. Put together, these findings revealed that coupling ZnPc with GnRH analogue was an effective way to improve the selectivity of ZnPc towards tumors with over-expressed GnRH receptors.

Abstract
Two new zinc phthalocyanine derivatives bearing four 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl (ZnPc1) and 3,5-dimethylphenoxy (ZnPc2) have been synthesized and proved by elemental analyses and UV-vis, 1H NMR, FTIR and MALDI-TOF mass spectra as spectroscopic determination. Thermal stabilities of these neutral Zn -phthalocyanines were performed by thermal gravimetric analysis and, significantly, were found stable up to 373 °C for ZnPc1 and 550 °C for ZnPc2. In addition, the photostability of the sensitizers was quite successful within 240 min. Furthermore, photodynamic therapy has been investigated using these neutral phthalocyanines. Singlet oxygen generation capacities of ZnPc1 and ZnPc2 were studied using 1,3-diphenyl-iso-benzofuran (50.0 μM) as a selective singlet oxygen trap in DMSO and both of them demonstrated very high singlet oxygen generation capacity. Photodynamic therapy is of considerable interest for its potential as an antimicrobial therapy on the grounds that the photodynamic activity of these compounds was tested against a Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli and a Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. Suspensions of the microorganisms were irradiated for 240 min in the presence of ZnPc1 (with hydrophilic group) and ZnPc2 phthalocyanines. In order to simulate solar radiation, we used a 750 W xenon lamp. Minimum photosensitizer concentration was used as 0.1 mg.10 mL-1 in 1% dimethylsulfoxide/phosphate buffer saline solution (DMSO/PBS). Moreover, the photostability of these compounds has been investigated and the effect of the amount of DMSO tested against selected bacteria. In the dark, with and without Pcs, bacterial inactivation did not occur. Bacterial inactivation by light with ZnPc1 was observed in response to Gram-negative bacteria E. coli and Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus, whereas the photoinactivation studies with ZnPc2 have revealed that the lack of its activity is due to its poor affinity for either of the organisms. These results suggest that a neutral amphiphilic photosensitizer may be easily used in an application concerning photoinactivation of bacterial cells as well as ionic photosensitizers.

Abstract
Phthalimides have been found to react with Cl-BsubPc to produce a new class of BsubPc derivatives, phthalimido-boronsubphthalocyanines (Phth-BsubPcs). They exhibit a high quantum yield for photoluminescence (Φ), maintain a high molar extinction coefficient (ε) and have bipolar electrochemical stability previously unseen in simple BsubPc derivatives. Their bipolar electrochemical characteristics have been extended into simple organic electronic devices: in OLEDs as charge transporters and emitters.

Abstract
The title compound, C24BBrF12N6 or Br-F12BsubPc (BsubPc is boronsubphtalocyanine), has a bowl-shaped structure with an approximate molecular C3v symmetry characteristic of boronsubphthalocyanine compounds. In the crystal, molecules are arranged in one-dimensional columns and the boron–subphthalocyanine units within each column are offset and angled in a bowl-to-ligand packing arrangement such that the axial Br atom rests in the aromatic concaved bowl of the neighboring subphthalocyanine with an intermolecular Br⋯B distance of 3.721 (3) Å.

Abstract
A series of mono-beta-, di-alpha- and di-beta-substituted phthalonitriles which contain one or two tetraethylene-glycol-linked 1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-glucofuranose unit(s) were prepared by typical substitution reactions. These precursors underwent self-cyclisation or mixed-cyclisation with an excess of unsubstituted phthalonitrile in the presence of Zn(OAc)(2) x 2 H(2)O and DBU to give the corresponding zinc(II) phthalocyanines with 1, 2 or 4 glucosylated substituent(s). For the di-alpha- and tetra-beta-glucosylated analogues, removal of the isopropylidene groups was also performed by the treatment with trifluoroacetic acid and water to give the corresponding water-soluble deprotected glucosylated derivatives. All of these glucoconjugated phthalocyanines were fully characterised with various spectroscopic methods and studied for their photophysical properties and in vitro photodynamic activities against HT29 human colon adenocarcinoma and HepG2 human hepatocarcinoma cells. The tetra-beta-glucosylated phthalocyanines ZnPc(beta-PGlu)(4) (4) and ZnPc(beta-Glu)(4) (5) were found to be essentially non-cytotoxic. By contrast, the mono- and di-glucosylated analogues ZnPc(beta-PGlu) (7), ZnPc(alpha-PGlu)(2) (11), ZnPc(alpha-Glu)(2) (12) and ZnPc(beta-PGlu)(2) (20) exhibited substantial photocytotoxicity. The isopropylidene-protected di-alpha-substituted derivative 11 was particularly potent, having IC(50) values as low as 0.03 microM. The different photodynamic activities of these compounds can be attributed to their different extent of cellular uptake and aggregation tendency in the biological media, which greatly affect their singlet oxygen generation efficiency.
