Abstract
This article describes the molecular mechanism by which tetraalkylammonium chloride ([R4N]Cl: R- = methyl (Me), ethyl (Et), propyl (Pr),butyl (Bu)) modulates the stability, folding, and dynamics of cytochrome c (Cyt c). Analysis of [R4N]Cl effects on thermal/chemical denaturations, millisecond refolding/unfolding kinetics, and slow CO-association kinetics of Cyt c without and with denaturant providing some significant results: (i) [R4N]Cl decreasing the unfolding free energy estimated by thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of thermal/chemical denaturation curves and kinetic chevrons (Log kobs-[GdmCl]) of Cyt c, respectively (ii) hydrophobicity of R-group of [R4N]Cl, preferential inclusion of [R4N]Cl at the protein surface, and destabilizing enthalpic attractive interactions of [Me4N]Cl and steric entropic interactions of [Et4N]Cl,[Pr4N]Cl and [Bu4N]Cl with protein contribute to [R4N]Cl-induced decrease thermodynamic stability of Cyt c (iii) [R4N]Cl exhibits an additive effect with denaturant to decrease thermodynamic stability and refolding rates of Cyt c (iv) low concentrations of [R4N]Cl (≤ 0.5 M) constrain the motional dynamics while the higher concentrations (>0.75 M [R4N]Cl) enhance the structural-fluctuations that denture protein (v) hydrophobicity of R-group of [R4N]Cl alters the [denaturant]-dependent conformational stability, refolding-unfolding kinetics, and CO-association kinetics of Cyt c. Furthermore, the MD simulations depicted that the addition of 1.0 M of [R4N]Cl increased the conformational fluctuations in Cyt c leading to decreased structural stability in the order [Me4N]Cl < [Et4N]Cl < [Pr4N]Cl < [Bu4N]Cl consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have unique physicochemical properties that make them advantageous for catalysis, such as low vapor pressure, non-flammability, high thermal and chemical stabilities, and the ability to enhance the activity and stability of (bio)catalysts. ILs can improve the efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability of bio(transformations) by acting as activators of enzymes, selectively dissolving substrates and products, and reducing toxicity. They can also be recycled and reused multiple times without losing their effectiveness. ILs based on imidazolium cation are preferred for structural organization aspects, with a semiorganized layer surrounding the catalyst. ILs act as a container, providing a confined space that allows modulation of electronic and geometric effects, miscibility of reactants and products, and residence time of species. ILs can stabilize ionic and radical species and control the catalytic activity of dynamic processes. Supported IL phase (SILP) derivatives and polymeric ILs (PILs) are good options for molecular engineering of greener catalytic processes. The major factors governing metal, photo-, electro-, and biocatalysts in ILs are discussed in detail based on the vast literature available over the past two and a half decades. Catalytic reactions, ranging from hydrogenation and cross-coupling to oxidations, promoted by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in both single and multiphase conditions, are extensively reviewed and discussed considering the knowledge accumulated until now.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the water concentration dependence of the intermolecular vibrations of two hydrated ionic liquids (ILs), cholinium dihydrogen phosphate ([ch][dhp]) and cholinium bromide ([ch]Br), using femtosecond Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy (fs-RIKES). The anions of the former and latter hydrated ILs are kosmotropic and chaotropic, respectively. We found that the spectral peak of ∼50 cm-1 shifted to the low-frequency side in hydrated [ch][dhp], indicating the weakening of its intermolecular interactions. In contrast, no change in the peak frequency of the low-frequency band at ∼50 cm-1 was observed with increasing water concentration in hydrated [ch]Br. The vibrational density of states (VDOS) spectra generated from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. Decomposition analysis of the VDOS spectra for each component revealed that the red shift of the low-frequency band in the hydrated [ch][dhp] upon water addition was essentially due to the contributions of anions and water rather than that of the cholinium cation. We also found from the low-frequency spectra of the two hydrated ILs that they differed in the concentration dependence of the 180 cm-1 band, which is assigned as a hindered translational motion of water molecules combined to form O···O stretching motions. From the relationship between the peak frequency of the low-frequency band and the bulk parameter, which is the square root of the surface tension divided by the density, we found that the peak frequency in the hydrated IL with kosmotropic [dhp]- depends on the bulk parameter, similar to the case for an aqueous solution of the typical deep eutectic solvent reline. However, the peak frequency of the hydrated IL with chaotropic Br- is constant with the bulk parameter.

Abstract
Proteins are highly labile molecules, thus requiring the presence of appropriate solvents and excipients in their liquid milieu to keep their stability and biological activity. In this field, ionic liquids (ILs) have gained momentum in the past years, with a relevant number of works reporting their successful use to dissolve, stabilize, extract, and purify proteins. Different approaches in protein-IL systems have been reported, namely, proteins dissolved in (i) neat ILs, (ii) ILs as co-solvents, (iii) ILs as adjuvants, (iv) ILs as surfactants, (v) ILs as phase-forming components of aqueous biphasic systems, and (vi) IL-polymer-protein/peptide conjugates. Herein, we critically analyze the works published to date and provide a comprehensive understanding of the IL-protein interactions affecting the stability, conformational alteration, unfolding, misfolding, and refolding of proteins while providing directions for future studies in view of imminent applications. Overall, it has been found that the stability or purification of proteins by ILs is bispecific and depends on the structure of both the IL and the protein. The most promising IL-protein systems are identified, which is valuable when foreseeing market applications of ILs, e.g., in "protein packaging" and "detergent applications". Future directions and other possibilities of IL-protein systems in light-harvesting and biotechnology/biomedical applications are discussed.

Abstract
Vitamin E (VE) is a natural antioxidant which is widely used in the food fields, while the shortcomings of easy oxidative inactivation and poor water solubility limit its application. Vitamin E esters' (VEEs) derivatives, such as vitamin E acetate (VEA), are more stable and easier to be absorbed while have similar biological activities and physiological functions compared with VE. In this systematic review, the digestion, absorption and physiological function of VEEs were summarized. To promote their further industrial applications, the synthesis strategies of VEEs were also summarized in-depth. In particular, as a new generation of green solvents, ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely used in enzymatic reactions due to the stabilization and activation of enzymes. Their applications in enzymatic synthesis of VEEs were summarized and discussed. Finally, several future perspectives for developing more efficiency strategies of VEEs synthesis, such as enzyme engineering and design of novel ILs, were also discussed.

Abstract
1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) acts as a potential green solvent for proteins. The present work provides a possible pathway by which the structural, kinetic, thermodynamic, and folding properties of horse cytochrome c (cyt c) are affected in green aqueous-AMIMCl systems. Analysis of the effect of AMIMCl on thermodynamic stability, refolding/unfolding kinetics, and motional dynamics of cyt c provided important information, (i) AMIMCl decreases the thermodynamic stability of reduced cyt c and also strengthens the guanidinium chloride (GdmCl)-mediated decrease in thermodynamic stability of protein, (ii) AMIMCl reduces the thermal-fluctuation of Met80-containing omega-loop of natively-folded compact state of carbonmonoxycytochrome c (MCO-state) due to polyfunctional interactions between the AMIM+ and different groups of protein, (iii) AMIMCl shifts the kinetic chevron plot, ln kobs[GdmCl] to the lower concentration of GdmCl, (iv) AMIMCl shifts the refolding and unfolding limps to vertically downwards and upwards, respectively, and (v) AMIMCl reducing the unfolding free energy estimated by both thermodynamic and kinetic analysis.

Abstract
The use of enzymes in industrial processes requires the improvement of their features in many instances. Enzyme immobilization, a requirement to facilitate the recovery and reuse of these water-soluble catalysts, is one of the tools that researchers may utilize to improve many of their properties. This review is focused on how enzyme immobilization may improve enzyme stability. Starting from the stabilization effects that an enzyme may experience by the mere fact of being inside a solid particle, we detail other possibilities to stabilize enzymes: generation of favorable enzyme environments, prevention of enzyme subunit dissociation in multimeric enzymes, generation of more stable enzyme conformations, or enzyme rigidification via multipoint covalent attachment. In this last point, we will discuss the features of an "ideal" immobilization protocol to maximize the intensity of the enzyme-support interactions. The most interesting active groups in the support (glutaraldehyde, epoxide, glyoxyl and vinyl sulfone) will be also presented, discussing their main properties and uses. Some instances in which the number of enzyme-support bonds is not directly related to a higher stabilization will be also presented. Finally, the possibility of coupling site-directed mutagenesis or chemical modification to get a more intense multipoint covalent immobilization will be discussed.

Abstract
Inspired by the interfacial catalysis of lipase, Herein, the hydrophobic ZIF-L coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and used to immobilize lipase from Aspergillus oryzae (AOL) for biodiesel production. The results showed that the PDMS coating enhanced the stability of ZIF-8 and ZIF-L in PBS. Immobilization efficiency of AOL on PDMS-modified ZIF-L was 96% under optimized conditions. The resultant immobilized lipase (AOL@PDMS-ZIF-L) exhibited higher activity recovery (430%) than AOL@ZIF-L. Meanwhile, compared with free lipase, the AOL@PDMS-ZIF-L exhibited better storage stability and thermal stability. After 150 days of storage, the free lipase retained only 20% of its original activity of hydrolyzing p-NPP, while the AOL@PDMS-ZIF-L still retained 90% of its original activity. The biodiesel yield catalyzed from soybean oil by free lipase was only 69%, However, the biodiesel yield by AOL@PDMS-ZIF-L reached 94%, and could still be maintained at 85% even after 5 consecutive cycles. It is believed that this convenient and versatile strategy has great promise in the important fields of immobilized lipase on MOF for biodiesel production.

Abstract
The authors used mesoporous silica microspheres as a support for the immobilization of inulinase from Aspergillus brasiliensis MTCC 1344 by the process of cross-linking. Under optimized operating conditions of pH 6.0, particle/enzyme ratio of 2.0:1.0 and glutaraldehyde concentration of 7 mM, a maximum immobilization yield of 90.7% was obtained after a cross-linking time of 12.25 h. Subsequently, the cross-linked inulinase was utilized for the hydrolysis of 5% inulin, and a maximum fructose concentration of 31.7 g/L was achieved under the optimum conditions of pH 6.0 and temperature 60°C in 3 h. Furthermore, on performing reusability studies during inulin hydrolysis, it was observed that the immobilized inulinase could be reused up to 10 subsequent cycles of hydrolysis, thus providing a facile and commercially attractive process of high-fructose syrup production.

Abstract
Enzymatic microarchitectures with spatially controlled reactivity, engineered molecular sieving ability, favorable interior environment, and industrial productivity show great potential in synthetic protocellular systems and practical biotechnology, but their construction remains a significant challenge. Here, we proposed a Pickering emulsion interface-directed synthesis method to fabricate such a microreactor, in which a robust and defect-free MOF layer was grown around silica emulsifier stabilized droplet surfaces. The compartmentalized interior droplets can provide a biomimetic microenvironment to host free enzymes, while the outer MOF layer secludes active species from the surroundings and endows the microreactor with size-selective permeability. Impressively, the thus-designed enzymatic microreactor exhibited excellent size selectivity and long-term stability, as demonstrated by a 1000 h continuous-flow reaction, while affording completely equal enantioselectivities to the free enzyme counterpart. Moreover, the catalytic efficiency of such enzymatic microreactors was conveniently regulated through engineering of the type or thickness of the outer MOF layer or interior environments for the enzymes, highlighting their superior customized specialties. This study provides new opportunities in designing MOF-based artificial cellular microreactors for practical applications.

Abstract
Ionic liquids have unique chemical properties that have fascinated scientists in many fields. The effects of adding ionic liquids to biocatalysts are many and varied. The uses of ionic liquids in biocatalysis include improved separations and phase behaviour, reduction in toxicity, and stabilization of protein structures. As the ionic liquid state of the art has progressed, concepts of what can be achieved in biocatalysis using ionic liquids have evolved and more beneficial effects have been discovered. In this review ionic liquids for whole-cell and isolated enzyme biocatalysis will be discussed with an emphasis on the latest developments, and a look to the future.

Abstract
This article reviews the most important advances in the enzymatic synthesis of polyesters. In first place, the different processes of polyester enzymatic synthesis, i.e., polycondensation, ring opening, and chemoenzymatic polymerizations, and the key parameters affecting these reactions, such as enzyme, concentration, solvent, or temperature, are analyzed. Then, the latest articles on the preparation of polyesters either by direct synthesis or via modification are commented. Finally, the main bioapplications of enzymatically obtained polyesters, i.e., antimicrobial, drug delivery, or tissue engineering, are described. It is intended to point out the great advantages that enzymatic polymerization present to obtain polymers and the disadvantages found to develop applied materials.

Abstract
An industrially important enzyme, Candida antarctica lipase B (CalB), was modified with a range of functional polymers including hydrophilic, hydrophobic, anionic, and cationic character using a "grafting to" approach. We determined the impact of polymer chain length on CalB activity by synthesizing biohybrids of CalB with each polymer at three different chain lengths, using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The activity of CalB in both aqueous and aqueous-organic media mixtures was significantly enhanced for acrylamide (Am) and N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAm) conjugates, with activity remaining approximately constant in 25 and 50% ethanol solvent systems. Interestingly, the activity of N,N-dimethylaminopropyl-acrylamide (DMAPA) conjugates increased gradually with increasing organic solvent content in the system. Contrary to other literature reports, our study showed significantly diminished activity for hydrophobic polymer-protein conjugates. Functional thermal stability assays also displayed a considerable enhancement of retained activity of Am, DMAm, and DMAPA conjugates compared to the native CalB enzyme. Thus, this study provides an insight into possible advances in lipase production, which can lead to new improved lipase bioconjugates with increased activity and stability.

Abstract
In drug discovery and drug development, it is estimated that around 40% of commercialized and 90% of under-study drugs have inadequate pharmaceutical properties, severely impairing its therapeutic efficacy. Thus, there is a strong demand to find strategies to enhance the delivery of such drugs. Ionic liquids are a novel class of liquids composed of a combination of organic salts that are of particular interest alone or in combination with drug delivery systems. This review is focused on the recent efforts using ionic liquids in drug solubility, formulation and drug delivery with specific emphasis on nanotechnology. The latest developments using hybrid delivery systems obtained upon the combination of drug delivery systems and ionic liquids will also be addressed.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have been receiving much attention as solvents in various areas of biochemistry because of their various beneficial properties over the volatile solvents and ILs availability in myriad variants (perhaps as many as 108) owing to the possibility of paring one cation with several anions and vice-versa as well as formulations as zwitterions. Their potential as solvents lies in their tendency to offer both directional and non-directional forces toward a solute molecule. Because of these forces, ionic liquids easily undergo intermolecular interactions with a range of polar/non-polar solutes, including biomolecules such as proteins and DNA. The interaction of genomic species in aqueous/non-aqueous states assists in unraveling their structure and functioning, which have implications in various biomedical applications. The charge density of ionic liquids renders them hydrophilic and hydrophobic, which retain intact over long-range of temperatures. Their ability in stabilizing or destabilizing the 3D-structure of a protein or the double-helical structure of DNA has been assessed superior to the water and volatile organic solvents. The aptitude of an ion in influencing the structure and stability of a native protein depends on their ranking in the Hofmeister series. However, at several instances, a reverse Hofmeister ordering of ions and specific ion-solute interaction has been observed. The capability of an ionic liquid in terms of the tendency to promote the coiling/uncoiling of DNA structure is noted to rely on the basicity, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobicity of the ionic liquid in question. Any change in the DNA's double-helical structure reflects a change in its melting temperature (T m), compared to a standard buffer solution. These changes in DNA structure have implications in biosensor design and targeted drug-delivery in biomedical applications. In the current review, we have attempted to highlight various aspects of ionic liquids that influence the structure and properties of proteins and DNA. In short, the review will address the issues related to the origin and strength of intermolecular interactions, the effect of structural components, their nature, and the influence of temperature, pH, and additives on them.

Abstract
Analysis of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters measured for CO-association reaction of Ferrocytochrome c (Ferrocyt c) under variable concentrations of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium with varying anion ([Bmim]X) (X = Cl-, I-, Br-, HSO4-) at pH 7 revealed that the low concentration of [Bmim]X (≤0.5 M) constrains the CO-association dynamics of Ferrocyt c and typically follows the order: [Bmim]HSO4 > [Bmim]Cl > [Bmim]Br > [Bmim]I. At relatively higher concentrations (>0.5), the chaotropic action of [Bmim]+ dominates which consequently increases the thermal-fluctuations responsible to denature the protein and thus accelerates the speed of CO-association reaction. Analysis of thermal denaturation curves of Ferrocyt c measured at different concentrations of [Bmim]X revealed that the [Bmim]X decreases the thermodynamic stability of protein and typically follows the order: [Bmim]I > [Bmim]Br > [Bmim]Cl > [Bmim]CH3COO > [Bmim]HSO4, demonstrating that the effect of [Bmim]X on thermodynamic stability of protein is not in accordance to Hofmeister series effect of anions because instead of increasing the kosmotropic anion carrying [Bmim]X ([Bmim]CH3COO and [Bmim]HSO4) also decreases the thermodynamic stability of protein.

Multi-Combilipases: Co-Immobilizing Lipases with Very Different Stabilities Combining Immobilization via Interfacial Activation and Ion Exchange. Abstract
The lipases A and B from Candida antarctica (CALA and CALB), Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL) or Rhizomucor miehei (RML), and the commercial and artificial phospholipase Lecitase ultra (LEU) may be co-immobilized on octyl agarose beads. However, LEU and RML became almost fully inactivated under conditions where CALA, CALB and TLL retained full activity. This means that, to have a five components co-immobilized combi-lipase, we should discard 3 fully active and immobilized enzymes when the other two enzymes are inactivated. To solve this situation, CALA, CALB and TLL have been co-immobilized on octyl-vinyl sulfone agarose beads, coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) and the least stable enzymes, RML and LEU have been co-immobilized over these immobilized enzymes. The coating with PEI is even favorable for the activity of the immobilized enzymes. It was checked that RML and LEU could be released from the enzyme-PEI coated biocatalyst, although this also produced some release of the PEI. That way, a protocol was developed to co-immobilize the five enzymes, in a way that the most stable could be reused after the inactivation of the least stable ones. After RML and LEU inactivation, the combi-biocatalysts were incubated in 0.5 M of ammonium sulfate to release the inactivated enzymes, incubated again with PEI and a new RML and LEU batch could be immobilized, maintaining the activity of the three most stable enzymes for at least five cycles of incubation at pH 7.0 and 60 °C for 3 h, incubation on ammonium sulfate, incubation in PEI and co-immobilization of new enzymes. The effect of the order of co-immobilization of the different enzymes on the co-immobilized biocatalyst activity was also investigated using different substrates, finding that when the most active enzyme versus one substrate was immobilized first (nearer to the surface of the particle), the activity was higher than when this enzyme was co-immobilized last (nearer to the particle core).

Abstract
New Candida antarctica lipase B derivatives with higher activity than the free enzyme were obtained by occlusion in an organogel of an ionic liquid (ionogel) based on the ionic liquid [Omim][PF6] and polyvinyl chloride. The inclusion of glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker improved the properties of the ionogel, allowing the enzymatic derivative to reach 5-fold higher activity than the free enzyme and also allowing it to be reused at 70 °C. The new methodology allows enzymatic derivatives to be designed by changing the ionic liquid, thus providing a suitable microenvironment for the enzyme. The ionic liquid may act on substrates to increase their local concentration, while reducing water activity in the enzyme's microenvironment. All this allows the activity and selectivity of the enzyme to be improved and greener processes to be developed. The chemical composition and morphology of the ionogel were also studied by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, finding that porosity, which was related with the chemical composition, was a key factor for the enzyme activity.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) present a vast number of solvents capable of replacing toxic organic solvents in chemical, biotechnology and biomedical applications. ILs are inexpensive and environmentally friendly as the materials can be recycled conveniently. Chemists use a variety of cation and anion combinations to produce an IL that fits the requirements of the sustainable future through the pursuit of greener chemical processes. As such, the development of various types of ILs has been recognized as the emergence of environmentally friendly solvents to attain enhanced protein stability in vitro. The literature survey reveals that there exist a large number of scholarly articles as well as elegant reviews on protein stability in ILs. Biomolecules have adapted to antagonistic environmental stresses that normally denature proteins, and the mechanism of adaptation that protects the cellular components against denaturation involves the intracellular concentration of co-solvents. In this regard, recent experimental results distinctly demonstrated that ILs are stabilizing proteins against denaturing stresses, and their presence in the cells does not alter protein functional activities. However, a review focusing particularly on the refolding and counteracting effects of the ILs against denatured proteins by multiple stresses is still missing. This perspective unveils the studies that have been conducted to improve protein stabilities with ILs as well as the refolding and counteracting abilities of these ILs against the denatured proteins under the influence of multiple stresses. We believe that ILs can provide significant environmental and economic advantages for biochemical processes in the near future. Essentially, numerous investigations are required to allow us to further explore the stabilizing properties of ILs over proteins.

Abstract
One important aspect of the green chemistry revolution has been the use of ionic liquids as the solvent in liquid-phase enzymatic catalysis. An essential requirement for protein enzyme function is the correct folding of the polypeptide chain into its functional "native" state. Quantitative assessment of protein structure may be carried out either empirically, or by using model-based characterization procedures, in which the parameters are defined in terms of a standard reference state. In this short note, we briefly outline the nature of the parameters associated with different empirical and model-based characterization procedures and point out factors which affect their interpretation when using a base solvent different from water. This review principally describes arguments developed by Wakayama et al., Protein Solubility and Amorphous Aggregation: From Academic Research to Applications in Drug Discovery and Bioindustry, 2019, edited by Y. Abstract
For more than 40 years, protein-polymer conjugates have been widely used for many applications, industrially and biomedically. These bioconjugates have been shown to modulate the activity and stability of various proteins while introducing reusability and new activities that can be used for drug delivery, improve pharmacokinetic ability, and stimuli-responsiveness. Techniques such as RDRP, ROMP and "click" have routinely been utilized for development of well-defined bioconjugate and polymeric materials. Synthesis of bioconjugate materials often take advantage of natural amino acids present within protein and peptide structures for a host of coupling chemistries. Polymer modification may elicit increased or decreased activity, activity retention under harsh conditions, prolonged activity in vivo and in vitro, and introduce stimuli responsiveness. Bioconjugation has resulted to modulated thermal stability, chemical stability, storage stability, half-life and reusability. In this review we aim to provide a brief state of the field, highlight a wide range of behaviors caused by polymer conjugation, and provide areas of future work.

Abstract
Lipases exhibit a unique process during the catalysis of the hydrolysis of triglyceride substrates called interfacial activation. Surfactants are used as cosolvents with water not only to offer a less polar environment to the lipases needed for their interfacial activation but also to solvate the substrate which are poorly soluble in water. However, the presence of detergent in the medium can affect both the lipase and the substrate, making the construction of a microkinetic model for lipase activity in the presence of the detergent difficult. Herein, we study the interfacial activation of a lidless lipase LipA from Bacillus subtilis using extensive atomistic molecular dynamics simulations at different concentrations of the surfactant, Thesit (C12E8), at two pH values. Residues which bind to the monomeric detergent are found to be the same as the ones which have been reported earlier to bind to the substrate. Very importantly, a pH-induced rotation of the enzyme with respect to surfactant aggregate has been observed which not only explains the experimentally observed pH-dependent enzymatic activity of this lidless lipase, but also suggests its reorientation at an aqueous-lipodophilic interface.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of the addition of the following ionic liquids (IL): choline chloride (CC), tetramethylammonium bromide (TB) and 1‑ethyl‑3‑methylimidazolium bromide (EM), on some biochemical properties including enzymatic activity and different kinetic parameters of commercial proteases. The enzyme-IL combinations that showed the highest increases in enzyme activities were as follows: CC (0.5mM) and Neutrase® 0.8L; CC (5mM) and Flavourzyme® 500L; TB (2000mM) and Alcalase® 2.4L, with relative increases of 20, 15 and 150% in protease activities, respectively, compared to the control assays. The combination TB and Alcalase® 2.4L showed a reduction of 50% of the activation energy (Ea), an increase of the relation Vmax/Km of 35% and a 16-fold rise in the values of t1/2, and D. Neutrase® 0.8L combined with CC showed an increase of 20% in the relation Vmax/Km. The combination Flavourzyme® 500L and CC presented a 20% higher value of the relation Vmax/Km and a 2-fold increase in the values of t1/2 and D compared to the control assay. In summary, the most positive effects observed in this study included proteases with improved activity and stability properties and a greater affinity for the substrate.

Abstract
The remarkable progress in the field of ionic liquids (ILs) in the last two decades has involved investigations on different aspects of ILs in various conditions. The nontoxic and biocompatible nature of ILs makes them a suitable substance for the storage and application of biomolecules. In this regard, the aqueous IL solutions have attracted a large number of studies to comprehend the role of water in modulating various properties of biomolecules. Here, we review some of the recent studies on aqueous ILs that concern the role of water in altering the behavior of ILs in general and in case of biomolecules solvated in ILs. The different structural and dynamic effects caused by water have been highlighted. We discuss the different modes of IL interaction that are responsible for stabilization and destabilization of proteins and enzymes followed by examples of water effect on this. The role of water in the case of nucleic acid storage in ILs, an area which has mostly been underrated, also has been emphasized. Our discussions highlight the fact that the effects of water on IL behavior are not general and are highly dependent on the nature of the IL under consideration. Overall, we aim to draw attention to the significance of water dynamics in the aqueous IL solutions, a better understanding of which can help in developing superior storage materials for application purposes.

Abstract
Surface-clean Au nanoparticles (NPs) confined in films of ionic liquids (ILs) can be easily fabricated by sputtering deposition. A silicon wafer coated with films of both hydrophobic (bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)amide, NTf2-) and hydrophilic (tetrafluoroborate, BF4-) imidazolium-based ILs forms an 'ionic carpet-like' structure that can be easily decorated with Au NPs of 5.1 and 6.5 nm mean diameter, respectively. The depth profile distribution of the Au NPs depends on the arrangement of the IL, which is controlled mainly by the anion volume. Higher concentrations of Au NPs are found closer to the IL surface for the system containing a larger anion (NTf2) whereas Au NPs are located deeper in the IL for the system containing a smaller anion (BF4). The Au NPs are well distributed over the IL/Si support and are strictly confined in a single layer of the IL. This method is among the most simple and versatile for the generation of liquid layers containing surface-clean, stable and confined Au NPs.

Abstract
Background Developing an efficient lipophilization reaction system for phenolic derivatives could enhance their applications in food processing. Low solubility of phenolic acids reduces the efficiency of phenolic derivatives in most benign enzyme solvents. The conversion of phenolic acids through esterification alters their solubility and enhances their use as food antioxidant additives as well as their application in cosmetics. Results This study has shown that lipase-catalyzed esterification of dihydrocaffeic acid with hexanol in ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumbis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide) was the best approach for esterification reaction. In order to achieve the maximum yield, the process was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) based on a five-level and four independent variables such as: dosage of enzyme; hexanol/dihydrocaffeic acid mole ratio; temperature and reaction time. The optimum esterification condition (Y = 84.4%) was predicted to be obtained at temperature of 39.4 °C, time of 77.5 h dosage of enzyme at 41.6% and hexanol/dihydrocaffeic acid mole ratio of 2.1. Conclusion Finally, this study has produced an efficient enzymatic esterification method for the preparation of hexyl dihydrocaffeate in vitro using a lipase in an ionic liquid system. Concentration of hexanol was the most significant (p < 0.05) independent variable that influenced the yield of hexyl dihydrocaffeate.Synthesis of different Hexyl dihydrocaffeates in ionic liquid ![]()

Abstract
In the last two decades, while searching for interesting applications of ionic liquids as potent solvents, their solvation properties and their general impact on biomolecules, and in particular on proteins, gained interest. It turned out that ionic liquids are excellent solvents for protein refolding and crystallization. Biomolecules showed increased solubilities and stabilities, both operational and thermal, in ionic liquids, which also seem to prevent self-aggregation during solubilization. Biomolecules can be immobilized, e.g. in highly viscous ionic liquids, for particular biochemical processes and can be designed to some extent by the proper choice of the ionic liquid cations and anions, which can be characterized by the Hofmeister series.

Abstract
It is widely believed that lipases in ionic liquids (ILs) possess higher enzyme activity, stability and selectivity; however, reaction equilibrium is always limited by product inhibition, and the product is difficult to separate from non-volatile ILs using distillation. To solve this problem, using trialkylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as a complexing agent, a novel biphase of reactive solvent and IL was firstly reported for caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) production from methyl caffeate (MC) and 2-phenylethanol (PE) catalyzed by lipase via transesterification. The effects of the reaction parameters and their action mechanism were investigated, and the inhibition of CAPE against bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum was firstly measured. The MC conversion of 98.83% ± 0.76% and CAPE yield of 96.29% ± 0.07% were obtained by response surface methodology in the 25 g/L TOPO-cyclohexane/[Bmim][Tf2N] (1:1, v/v); the complex stoichiometry calculation and FTIR spectrum confirmed that the reversible hydrogen-bond complexation between TOPO and caffeates significantly enhances the cooperative effect of two phases on the lipase-catalyzed reaction. The temperature was reduced by 14 °C; the MC concentration increased by 3.33-fold; the ratio of catalyst to donor decreased by 4.5-fold; and Km decreased 1.08-fold. The EC50 of CAPE against R. solanacearum was 0.17–0.75 mg/mL, suggesting that CAPE is a potential in vitro inhibitor of plant pathogenic bacteria.
