Lanthanide complexes in multifunctional asymmetric catalysis

Gd(III)-Catalyzed Regio-, Diastereo-, and Enantioselective [4 + 2] Photocycloaddition of Naphthalene Derivatives

Catalytic asymmetric dearomatization (CADA) reactions have evolved into an efficient strategy for accessing chiral polycyclic and spirocyclic scaffolds from readily available planar aromatics. Despite the significant developments, the CADA reaction of naphthalenes remains underdeveloped. Herein, we report a Gd(III)-catalyzed asymmetric dearomatization reaction of naphthalene with a chiral PyBox ligand via visible-light-enabled [4 + 2] cycloaddition. This reaction features application of a chiral Gd/PyBox complex, which regulates the reactivity and selectivity simultaneously, in excited-state catalysis. A wide range of functional groups is compatible with this protocol, giving the highly enantioenriched bridged polycycles in excellent yields (up to 96%) and selectivity (up to >20:1 chemoselectivity, >20:1 dr, >99% ee). The synthetic utility is demonstrated by a 2 mmol scale reaction, removal of directing group, and diversifications of products. Preliminary mechanistic experiments are performed to elucidate the reaction mechanism.

Frustrated Lewis Pair-Type Reactivity of Intermolecular Rare-Earth Aryloxide and N-Heterocyclic Carbene/Olefin Combinations

This work reports the cooperative reactivity of rare-earth aryloxide complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) or N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO), showcasing their synergistic effect on the activation of H2 and diverse organic substrates. Reactions of RE(OAr)3 (RE=La, Sm, and Y; Ar=2,6-tBu2-C6H3) with unsaturated NHC ItBu (:C[N(R)CH]2, R=tBu) isolated abnormally bound RE metal NHC complexes RE/aNHC. In contrast, no metal-NHO adducts were formed when RE(OAr)3 were treated with NHO (R2C=C[N(R)C(R)]2, R=CH3). Both RE/aNHC and RE/NHO Lewis pairs enabled cooperative H2 activation. Furthermore, RE(OAr)3 were found to catalyze the hydrogenation of the exocyclic C=C double bond of NHO under mild conditions. Moreover, treatment of the La/aNHC complex with benzaldehyde produced a La/C4 1,2-addition product. The La/NHO Lewis pair could react with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane and α, β-conjugated imine, affording an isocyanotrimethylsilyl lanthanum amide complex and a La/C 1,4-addition product, respectively.

Cholesky Decomposition-Based Implementation of Relativistic Two-Component Coupled-Cluster Methods for Medium-Sized Molecules

A Cholesky decomposition (CD)-based implementation of relativistic two-component coupled-cluster (CC) and equation-of-motion CC (EOM-CC) methods using an exact two-component Hamiltonian augmented with atomic-mean-field spin-orbit integrals (the X2CAMF scheme) is reported. The present CD-based implementation of X2CAMF-CC and EOM-CC methods employs atomic-orbital-based algorithms to avoid the construction of two-electron integrals and intermediates involving three and four virtual indices. Our CD-based implementation extends the applicability of X2CAMF-CC and EOM-CC methods to medium-sized molecules with the possibility to correlate around 1000 spinors. Benchmark calculations for uranium-containing small molecules were performed to assess the dependence of the CC results on the Cholesky threshold. A Cholesky threshold of 10-4 is shown to be sufficient to maintain chemical accuracy. Example calculations to illustrate the capability of the CD-based relativistic CC methods are reported for the bond-dissociation energy of the uranium hexafluoride molecule, UF6, with up to quadruple-ζ basis sets, and the lowest excitation energy in the solvated uranyl ion [UO22+(H2O)12].

Excited-Multimer Mediated Supramolecular Upconversion on Multicomponent Lanthanide-Organic Assemblies

Upconversion (UC) is a fascinating anti-Stokes-like optical process with promising applications in diverse fields. However, known UC mechanisms are mainly based on direct energy transfer between metal ions, which constrains the designability and tunability of the structures and properties. Here, we synthesize two types of Ln8L12-type (Ln for lanthanide ion; L for organic ligand L1 or L2R/S) lanthanide-organic complexes with assembly induced excited-multimer states. The Yb8(L2R/S)12 assembly exhibits upconverted multimer green fluorescence under 980 nm excitation through a cooperative sensitization process. Furthermore, upconverted red emission from Eu3+ on the heterometallic (Yb/Eu)8L12 assemblies is also realized via excited-multimer mediated energy relay. Our findings demonstrate a new strategy for designing UC materials, which is crucial for exploiting photofunctions of multicomponent lanthanide-organic complexes.

Double Bond Cleavage in Small Molecules Using a Geminal Sc/P Lewis Pair

Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have proven capable of cleaving the H-H σ-bond and binding a variety of unsaturated small molecules. In contrast, examples of FLP-mediated complete rupture of double-bonded substrates remain scarce. Herein, we present a geminal Sc/P Lewis pair, i.e., (ArO)2ScN(tBu)PPh2 (Ar = 2,6-tBu2-C6H3), that exhibits typical FLP-type 1,2-addition reactivity toward CO2. Notably, it enables the complete cleavage of a series of double bonds, such as the N═N bond in azobenzene or pyridazine, the N═O bond in nitrosobenzene, and the N═S and S═O bonds in N-sulfinylaniline, to yield the corresponding metallacyclic products. Moreover, the first rare-earth metal sulfur monoxide adduct could be obtained through the bond cleavage of PhNSO, demonstrating the capability of rare-earth metal complexes to capture reactive species.

Cooperative Lewis Acid-1,2,3-Triazolium-Aryloxide Catalysis: Pyrazolone Addition to Nitroolefins as Entry to Diaminoamides

Pyrazolones represent an important structural motif in active pharmaceutical ingredients. Their asymmetric synthesis is thus widely studied. Still, a generally highly enantio- and diastereoselective 1,4-addition to nitroolefins providing products with adjacent stereocenters is elusive. In this article, a new polyfunctional CuII -1,2,3-triazolium-aryloxide catalyst is presented which enables this reaction type with high stereocontrol. DFT studies revealed that the triazolium stabilizes the transition state by hydrogen bonding between C(5)-H and the nitroolefin and verify a cooperative mode of activation. Moreover, they show that the catalyst adopts a rigid chiral cage/pore structure by intramolecular hydrogen bonding, by which stereocontrol is achieved. Control catalyst systems confirm the crucial role of the triazolium, aryloxide and CuII , requiring a sophisticated structural orchestration for high efficiency. The addition products were used to form pyrazolidinones by chemoselective C=N reduction. These heterocycles are shown to be valuable precursors toward β,γ'-diaminoamides by chemoselective nitro and N-N bond reductions. Morphological profiling using the Cell painting assay identified biological activities for the pyrazolidinones and suggest modulation of DNA synthesis as a potential mode of action. One product showed biological similarity to Camptothecin, a lead structure for cancer therapy.

Gold-Based Coronands as Hosts for M3+ Metal Ions: Ring Size Matters

The controlled, self-assembled synthesis of multinuclear coordination compounds can be performed via different approaches. Frequently, steric, geometric and/or electronic factors located at the ligand systems predefine the way in which metal ions can assemble them to large aggregates. For the compounds in the present paper, also the Pearson's acidities and preferred coordination geometries of the metal ions were used as organization principles. The ligand under study, 2,6-dipicolinoylbis(N,N-diethylthiourea), H₂L1^ethyl, possesses 'soft' sulfur and 'hard' nitrogen and oxygen donors. One-pot reactions of this compound with [AuCl(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) and M³⁺ salts (M = Sc, Y, La, Ln, Ga, In) give products with gold-based {Au₃(L1^ethyl)₃}³⁺ or {Au₂(L1^ethyl)₂}²⁺ coronands, which host central M³⁺ ions. The formation of such units is templated by the M³⁺ ions and the individual size of the coronand rings is dependent on the ionic radii of the central ions in a way that small ions such as Ga³⁺ form a [Ga⊂{Au₂(L1^ethyl)₂}]⁺ assembly, while larger ions (starting from Sc³⁺/In³⁺) establish neutral [M⊂{Au₃(L1^ethyl)₃}] units with nine-coordinate central ions.

The role of lanthanide luminescence in advancing technology

Our society is indebted to the numerous inventors and scientists who helped bring about the incredible technological advances in modern society that we all take for granted. The importance of knowing the history of these inventions is often underestimated, although our reliance on technology is escalating. Lanthanide luminescence has paved the way for many of these inventions, from lighting and displays to medical advancements and telecommunications. Given the significant role of these materials in our daily lives, knowingly or not, their past and present applications are reviewed. A majority of the discussion is devoted to pointing out the benefits of using lanthanides over other luminescent species. We aimed to give a short outlook outlines promising directions for the development of the considered field. This review aims to provide the reader enough content to further appreciate the benefits that these technologies have brought into our lives, with the perspective of travelling among the past and latest advances in lanthanide research, aiming for an even brighter future.

Perfluoroalkyl Chain Length Effect on Crystal Packing and [LnO8] Coordination Geometry in Lanthanide-Lithium β-Diketonates: Luminescence and Single-Ion Magnet Behavior

Functionalized perfluoroalkyl lithium β-diketonates (LiL) react with lanthanide(III) salts (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy) in methanol to give heterobimetallic Ln-Li complexes of general formula [(LnL₃)(LiL)(MeOH)]. The length of fluoroalkyl substituent in ligand was found to affect the crystal packing of complexes. Photoluminescent and magnetic properties of heterobimetallic β-diketonates in the solid state are reported. The effect of the geometry of the [LnO₈] coordination environment of heterometallic β-diketonates on the luminescent properties (quantum yields, phosphorescence lifetimes for Eu, Tb, Dy complexes) and single-ion magnet behavior (U_eff for Dy complexes) is revealed.

Added Complexity!-Mechanistic Aspects of Heterobimetallic Complexes for Application in Homogeneous Catalysis

Inspired by multimetallic assemblies and their role in enzyme catalysis, chemists have developed a plethora of heterobimetallic complexes for application in homogeneous catalysis. Starting with small heterobimetallic complexes with σ-donating and π-accepting ligands, such as N-heterocyclic carbene and carbonyl ligands, more and more complex systems have been developed over the past two decades. These systems can show a significant increase in catalytic activity compared with their monometallic counterparts. This increase can be attributed to new reaction pathways enabled by the presence of a second metal center in the active catalyst. This review focuses on mechanistic aspects of heterobimetallic complexes in homogeneous catalysis. Depending on the type of interaction of the second metal with the substrates, heterobimetallic complexes can be subdivided into four classes. Each of these classes is illustrated with multiple examples, showcasing the versatility of both, the types of interactions possible, and the reactions accessible.

A Practical and Robust Zwitterionic Cooperative Lewis Acid/Acetate/Benzimidazolium Catalyst for Direct 1,4-Additions

A catalyst type is disclosed allowing for exceptional efficiency in direct 1,4-additions. The catalyst is a zwitterionic entity, in which acetate binds to Cu^II , which is formally negatively charged and serving as counterion for benzimidazolium. All 3 functionalities are involved in the catalytic activation. For maleimides productivity was increased by a factor >300 compared to literature (TONs up to 6700). High stereoselectivity and productivity was attained for a broad range of other Michael acceptors as well. The polyfunctional catalyst is accessible in only 4 steps from N-Ph-benzimidazole with an overall yield of 96 % and robust during catalysis. This allowed to reuse the same catalyst multiple times with nearly constant efficiency. Mechanistic studies, in particular by DFT, give a detailed picture how the catalyst operates. The benzimidazolium unit stabilizes the coordinated enolate nucleophile and prevents that acetate/acetic acid dissociate from the catalyst.

Reversible trans-to-cis photoisomerization and irreversible photocyclization reactions of a Co-coordinated stilbene derivative on chiral di-β-diketonate lanthanide complexes

Six lanthanide complexes constructed from two chiral β-diketonates (d/l-fbc = 3-heptafluorobutyryl-(+)/(-)-camphorate), the stilbene derivative (E)-N',N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-4-styrylbenzoyl hydrazide (L), a trifluoroacetate anion (CF₃CO₂ ^-), and one water molecule, namely [Ln(d/l-fbc)₂(L)(CF₃CO₂)]·H₂O (LnC₅₇H₅₄F₁₇N₄O₈, Ln = La (1, d-fbc), La (2, l-fbc), Sm (3, d-fbc), Eu (4, d-fbc), Eu (5, l-fbc), and Tb (6, d-fbc), were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ¹H-NMR, elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The photoisomerization reactions of these complexes were systematically studied by means of experimental and theoretical calculations. Crystals of complexes 1, 2, 3, and 4 were obtained and belong to the monoclinic crystal system and the C2 chiral space group. The Λ- and Δ-diastereomers coexist in their crystals and no apparent bisignate couplets are observed in their ECD spectra. Among the complexes, the photocyclization reaction is followed by the trans-to-cis photoisomerization reaction and competes with the trans-to-cis photoisomerization, then the photocyclization reaction continues. The photocyclization reaction is irreversible in this stilbene derivative and is delayed in the lanthanide complexes. These results provide a viable strategy for the design of promising new stilbene-attached dual-functional lanthanide-based optical-switching materials.

Spinolate Lanthanide Complexes for High Circularly Polarized Luminescence Metrics in the Visible and Near-Infrared

Analogues of Shibasaki's complexes supported by enantiopure Spinol are synthesized and characterized. The tris(Spinol) Ln^III complexes are generated either by ligand deprotonation followed by complexation with lanthanide triflate salts or by in situ deprotonation by Ln(N(SiMe₃)₂)₃ salts in the presence of additional base. The resulting complexes are found to be luminescent and chiroptically active for both circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), notably producing strong CPL with dissymmetry factors (g_lum) of up to 0.50, 0.53, and 0.53 for Sm, Tb, and Dy, respectively. The Sm complex is found to be CPL-active in the near-infrared (NIR) region at 980 nm, representing the first report of NIR CPL from Sm. Additionally, the Tb complex, due to efficient sensitization (Φ = 0.846 in tetrahydrofuran) coupled with strong dissymmetry factors, achieves a CPL brightness (B_CPL) of 3760 M^-1 cm^-1, the highest reported for any CPL-active compound to date. These are rare examples of compounds that show simultaneous improvement of both CPL metrics (g_lum and B_CPL). Solid-state structural analysis of the Spinolate complexes and comparisons to other CPL-active analogues of Shibasaki's complexes also suggest that nondistorted geometries should generate even stronger metrics.

Basified Graphene Oxide and PPO Composite Aerogel with Basified Graphene Oxide for Henry Reaction in Solvent-Free Conditions: A Green Approach

Novel basified graphene oxide and high-porosity monolithic composite aerogels of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) containing basified graphene oxide (b-eGO) have been prepared as recoverable and reusable catalysts for the Henry reaction in solvent-free conditions at room temperature. The results showed that, although b-eGO was able to promote the reaction, it suffered from reduced stability. On the other hand, PPO/b-eGO aerogels were able to efficiently promote the Henry reaction in solvent-free conditions. The product could be obtained pure without a purification step, and the catalyst was stable for over 15 months and could be easily recycled without losing catalytic efficiency. The stereochemical outcome was further investigated in the presence of PPO/b-eGO. Despite its negligible influence on diastereoselectivity, better efficiency and a sensible reduction of reaction time were observed.

Electroprecipitation of Nanometer-Thick Films of Ln(OH)3 [Ln = La, Ce, and Lu] at Pt Microelectrodes and Their Effect on Electron-Transfer Reactions

We report investigations of the deposition of nanometer-thick Ln(OH)₃ films (Ln = La, Ce, and Lu) and their effect on outer-sphere and inner-sphere electron-transfer reactions. Insoluble Ln(OH)₃ films are deposited from aqueous solutions of LaCl₃ onto the surface of 12.5 μm radius Pt microdisk electrodes during water or oxygen reduction. Both reactions produce interfacial OH^-, which complexes with Ln³⁺, resulting in the precipitation of Ln(OH)₃. Surface analyses by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy indicate the formation of a 1-2 nm thick uniform film. Outer-sphere electron-transfer reactions (Ru(NH₃)₆³⁺ reduction, FcMeOH oxidation, and Fe(CN)₆^4-/3- oxidation/reduction) were investigated at Ln(OH)₃-modified electrodes of different film thicknesses. The results demonstrate that the steady-state transport-limited current for these reactions decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the degree of blockage depends upon the redox species, suggesting that the Ln(OH)₃ films are free from pinholes greater than the size of the redox molecules. This suggests that the films are either ionically conducting or that electron tunneling occurs across these thin layers. A similar blocking effect was observed for the inner-sphere reductions of H₂O and O₂. We further demonstrate that the thickness of La(OH)₃ films can be controlled by anodic dissolution. Additionally, we show that La³⁺ lowers the supersaturation of dissolved H₂ required to nucleate a stable nanobubble.

Proving Cooperativity of a Catalytic Reaction by Means of Nanoscale Geometry: The Case of Click Reaction

Establishing whether a reaction is catalyzed by a single-metal catalytic center or cooperatively by a fleeting complex encompassing two such centers may be an arduous pursuit requiring detailed kinetic, isotopic, and other types of studies─as illustrated, for instance, by over a decade-long work on single-copper versus di-copper mechanisms of the popular "click" reaction. This paper describes a method to interrogate such cooperative mechanisms by a nanoparticle-based platform in which the probabilities of catalytic units being proximal can be varied systematically and, more importantly, independently of their volume concentration. The method relies on geometrical considerations rather than a detailed knowledge of kinetic equations, yet the scaling trends it yield can distinguish between cooperative and non-cooperative mechanisms.

Lanthanides Singing the Blues: Their Fascinating Role in the Assembly of Gigantic Molybdenum Blue Wheels

Molybdenum blues (MBs) are a distinct class of polyoxometalates, exhibiting versatile/impressive architectures and high structural flexibility. In acidified and reduced aqueous environments, isopolymolybdates generate precisely organizable building blocks, which enable unique nanoscopic molecular systems (MBs) to be constructed and further fine-tuned by hetero elements such as lanthanide (Ln) ions. This Review discusses wheel-shaped MB-based structure types with strong emphasis on the ∼30 Ln-containing MBs as of August 2021, which include both organically hybridized and nonhybridized structures synthesized to date. The spotlight is thereby put on the lanthanide ions and ligand types, which are crucial for the resulting Ln-patterns and alterations in the gigantic structures. Several critical steps and reaction conditions in their synthesis are highlighted, as well as appropriate methods to investigate them both in solid state and in solution. The final section addresses the homogeneous/heterogeneous catalytic, molecular recognition and separation properties of wheel-shaped Ln-MBs, emphasizing their inimitable behavior and encouraging their application in these areas.

Structure and Chemical Bonding in Medium-Size Boron Clusters Doped with Praseodymium

After reports of unusually low oxidation states of lanthanide elements in Ln-B clusters and their inverse sandwich geometrical topologies, the interest shifted from boride clusters doped with transition metal (TM) elements to the boride clusters doped with lanthanide atoms. In this work, the results obtained by a combined approach consisting of CALYPSO structure predictions and density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the neutral and anionic PrB_n series, n = 7-16, are reported. A close agreement between our calculated vertical detachment energies and experimental data supports the accuracy of the results obtained. Contrary to the medium-size TM-doped medium boron clusters, which prefer three types of structural configurations, all lowest-energy states of the medium-size Pr-doped boron clusters have half-sandwich geometries. An interesting structural evolution pattern was found for both neutral and anionic PrB_n clusters at n = 7, 10, 13, and 16, which includes quasi-planar B₇ units half-sandwiching the Pr atom. Unusual oxidation numbers of +2 and +1 were found for the Pr atom in the PrB₇^- and PrB₈^- anions, respectively. Chemical bonding analysis for the neutral PrB₇ and PrB₁₃ clusters revealed that their high stability stems from interactions between Pr 5d and B 2p orbitals. A stable tubular-shaped PrB₃₀ cluster is proposed as a promising building block for boron-based nanotubes.

LFDFT—A Practical Tool for Coordination Chemistry

The electronic structure of coordination compounds with lanthanide ions is studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work deals with the electronic structure and properties of open-shell systems based on the calculation of multiplet structure and ligand-field interaction, within the framework of the Ligand–Field Density-Functional Theory (LFDFT) method. Using effective Hamiltonian in conjunction with the DFT, we are able to reasonably calculate the low-lying excited states of the molecular [Eu(NO3)3(phenanthroline)2] complex, subjected to the Eu3+ configuration 4f6. The results are compared with available experimental data, revealing relative uncertainties of less than 5% for many energy levels. We also demonstrate the ability of the LFDFT method to simulate absorption spectrum, considering cerocene as an example. Ce M4,5 X-ray absorption spectra are simulated for the complexes [Ce(η8−C8H8)2] and [Ce(η8−C8H8)2][Li(tetrahydrofurane)4], which are approximated by the Ce oxidation states 4+ and 3+, respectively. The results showed a very good agreement with the experimental data for the Ce3+ compound, unlike for the Ce4+ one, where charge transfer electronic structure is still missing in the theoretical model. Therefore this presentation reports the benefits of having a theoretical method that is primarily dedicated to coordination chemistry, but it also outlines limitations and places the ongoing developmental efforts in the broader context of treating complex molecular systems.

Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence at 1550 nm from Enantiopure Molecular Erbium Complexes

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in two subregions of the near-infrared (NIR) has been achieved. By leveraging the rigidity and diminishing detrimental vibrations of the heterobimetallic binolate complexes of erbium [(Binol)₃ErNa₃], species exhibiting an exceptionally high dissymmetry factor (|g_lum |) of 0.47 at 1550 nm were obtained. These erbium complexes are the first reported examples of CPL observed beyond 1200 nm. Analogous complexes of ytterbium and neodymium also exhibited strong CPL (|g_lum| = 0.17, 0.05, respectively) in a higher energy NIR window (800-1200 nm). All complexes exhibit high quantum yields (Er: 0.58%, Yb: 17%, Nd: 9.3%) and high B_CPL values (Er: 57 M^-1 cm^-1, Yb: 379 M^-1 cm^-1, Nd: 29 M^-1 cm^-1). Because of their strong CPL emission in the telecom band (1550 nm), biologically relevant NIR emission window (800-1100 nm), and synthetic versatility, the complexes reported here could permit further promising developments in quantum communication technologies and biologically relevant sensors.

Development of chiral potassium strong Brønsted base catalysts for enantioselective carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions

Chiral alkaline metal Brønsted bases are traditional and reliable promoters in enantioselective catalysis. Here, new chiral potassium strong base catalysts were developed for enantioselective carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions of weakly acidic carbon pronucleophiles. Chiral potassium amide or alkyl potassium catalyzed enantioselective addition reactions to imines or α,β-unsaturated amides with good to high enantioselectivities. The good potential of chiral potassium Brønsted bases to act as proton transfer catalysts has been shown.

Photo racemization of 2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl derivatives

Photo racemization of 2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (BINOL) and its monomethyl ether, monobutyl ether, and dimethyl ether was studied by means of circularly dichroism spectra, chiral HPLC, and theoretical calculations of rotation energy barriers. Racemization was fastest for BINOL and about one seventh as fast for the monomethyl and monobutyl ethers while it was too slow to be detected for the dimethyl ether under the present conditions.

A one-dimensional (1D) azido-bridged dysprosium coordination polymer featuring a zig-zag chain structure constructed from a halogen-functionalized quinoline derivative and N₃ ^- ligands was structurally and magnetically characterized. Magnetic studies revealed that the chain complex exhibits zero-field slow magnetic relaxation and a significant butterfly-like hysteresis loop, originating from highly magnetic anisotropy of the Dy³⁺ ions in a D_4d symmetry. This compound represents the first azido-bridged lanthanide chain showing zero-field slow magnetic relaxation behavior. These results highlight that the combination of high symmetric Ln³⁺ ions with the versatile azido bridging ligand provides an effective approach for the design and construction of advanced lanthanides molecular magnets.

Enantioselective "organocatalysis in disguise" by the ligand sphere of chiral metal-templated complexes

Asymmetric catalysis holds a prominent position among the important developments in chemistry during the 20th century. This was acknowledged by the 2001 Nobel Prize in chemistry awarded to Knowles, Noyori, and Sharpless for their development of chiral metal catalysts for organic transformations. The key feature of the catalysts was the crucial role of the chiral ligand and the nature of the metal ions, which promoted the catalytic conversions of the substrates via direct coordination. Subsequently the development of asymmetric organic catalysis opened new avenues to the synthesis of enantiopure compounds, avoiding any use of metal ions. Recently, an alternative approach to asymmetric catalysis emerged that relied on the catalytic functions of the ligands themselves boosted by coordination to metal ions. In other words, in these hybrid chiral catalysts the substrates are activated not by the metal ions but by the ligands. The activation and enantioselective control occurred via well-orchestrated and custom-tailored non-covalent interactions of the substrates with the ligand sphere of chiral metal complexes. In these metal-templated catalysts, the metal served either as a template (a purely structural role), or it constituted the exclusive source of chirality (metal-centred chirality due to the spatial arrangement of achiral or chiral bi-/tridentate ligands around an octahedral metal centre), and/or it increased the Brønsted acidity of the ligands. Although the field is still in its infancy, it represents an inspiring combination of both metal and organic catalysis and holds major unexplored potential to push the frontiers of asymmetric catalysis. Here we present an overview of this emerging field discussing the principles, applications and perspectives on the catalytic use of chiral metal complexes that operate as "organocatalysts in disguise". It has been demonstrated that these chiral metal complexes are efficient and provide high stereoselective control in asymmetric hydrogen bonding catalysis, phase-transfer catalysis, Brønsted acid/base catalysis, enamine catalysis, nucleophilic catalysis, and photocatalysis as well as bifunctional catalysis. Also, many of the catalysts have been identified as highly effective catalysts at remarkably low catalyst loadings. These hybrid systems offer many opportunities in the synthesis of chiral compounds and represent promising alternatives to metal-based and organocatalytic asymmetric transformations.

Competitive Coordination of Chloride and Fluoride Anions Towards Trivalent Lanthanide Cations (La3+ and Nd3+ ) in Molten Salts

Molten salt electrolysis is a vital technique to produce high-purity lanthanide metals and alloys. However, the coordination environments of lanthanides in molten salts, which heavily affect the related redox potential and electrochemical properties, have not been well elucidated. Here, the competitive coordination of chloride and fluoride anions towards lanthanide cations (La³⁺ and Nd³⁺ ) is explored in molten LiCl-KCl-LiF-LnCl₃ salts using electrochemical, spectroscopic, and computational approaches. Electrochemical analyses show that significant negative shifts in the reduction potential of Ln³⁺ occur when F^- concentration increases, indicating that the F^- anions interact with Ln³⁺ via substituting the coordinated Cl^- anions, and confirm [LnCl_x F_y ]^3-x-y (y_max =3) complexes are prevailing in molten salts. Spectroscopic and computational results on solution structures further reveal the competition between Cl^- and F^- anions, which leads to the formation of four distinct Ln(III) species: [LnCl₆ ]^3- , [LnCl₅ F]^3- , [LnCl₄ F₂ ]^3- and [LnCl₄ F₃ ]^4- . Among them, the seven-coordinated [LnCl₄ F₃ ]^4- complex possesses a low-symmetry structure evidenced by the pattern change of Raman spectra. After comparing the polarizing power (Z/r) among different metal cations, it was concluded that Ln-F interaction is weaker than that between transition metal and F^- ions.

Drastic Enhancement of Photosensitized Energy Transfer Efficiency of a Eu(III) Complex Driven by Arsenic

In this study, we focused on arsenic as a new potential motif for the ligand design of high-efficiency, luminous lanthanide complexes. A Eu³⁺ complex bearing triphenylarsine oxide had a photosensitized energy-transfer efficiency 7.9 times higher than that of a Eu³⁺ complex bearing triphenylphosphine oxide. This is mainly due to the heavy-atom effect of arsenic, which was supported by evaluating the photoluminescence spectra of their corresponding Gd³⁺ complexes.

Development of Catalytic Reactions for Precise Control of Chemoselectivity

Catalytic chemoselective reactions of innately less reactive functionalities over more reactive functionalities are described. A cooperative catalyst comprising a soft Lewis acid/hard Brønsted base enabled chemoselective activation of a hydroxyl group over an amino group, allowing for nucleophilic addition to electron-deficient olefins. The reaction could be applicable for a variety of amino alcohols, including pharmaceuticals, without requiring a tedious protection-deprotection process. Chemoselective enolization and subsequent α-functionalization of carboxylic acid derivatives were also achieved by a redox active catalyst through the radical process, providing unnatural α-amino/hydroxy acid derivatives bearing a complex carbon framework and a diverse set of functionalities. The present chemoselective catalysis described herein offers new opportunities to expand the chemical space for innovative drug discovery research.

Dinuclear helicate or mononuclear pincer lanthanide complexes from one ligand: stereo-controlled assembly and catalysis

By varying the metal/ligand ratio, either dinuclear triple helicate or mononuclear pincer can be stereo-selectively obtained from the same chiral ligand. Their catalytic properties have been demonstrated with the asymmetric FC alkylation reactions.
