One His, two His…the emerging roles of histidine in cellular nickel trafficking

Biological environments present a complex array of metal-binding ligands. Metal-binding proteins have been the overwhelming focus of study because of their important and well-defined biological roles. Consequently, the presence of functional low molecular weight (LMW) metal-ligand complexes has been overlooked in terms of their roles in metallobiochemistry, particularly within cells. Recent studies in microbial systems have illuminated the different roles of L-histidine in nickel uptake, gene expression, and metalloenzyme maturation. In this focused critical review, these roles are surveyed in the context of the coordination chemistry of Ni(II) ions and the amino acid histidine, and the physico-chemical properties of nickel complexes of histidine. These complexes are fundamentally important to cellular metal homeostasis and further work is needed to fully define their contributions.

2-Phenylbenzothiazolyl iridium complexes as inhibitors and probes of amyloid β aggregation

The aggregation of amyloid β (Aβ) peptides is a significant hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the detection of Aβ aggregates and the inhibition of their formation are important for the diagnosis and treatment of AD, respectively. Herein, we report a series of benzothiazole-based Ir(III) complexes HN-1 to HN-8 that exhibit appreciable inhibition of Aβ aggregation in vitro and in living cells. These Ir(III) complexes can induce a significant fluorescence increase when binding to Aβ fibrils and Aβ oligomers, while their measured log D values suggest these compounds could have enhanced blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. In vivo studies show that HN-1, HN-2, HN-3, and HN-8 successfully penetrate the BBB and stain the amyloid plaques in AD mouse brains after a 10-day treatment, suggesting that these Ir(III) complexes could act as lead compounds for AD therapeutic and diagnostic agent development.

Solvent Exchange Dynamics in M2(dobdc): An Interplay among Binding Strength, Exchange Kinetics, and Cooperativity

Solvent exchange is a crucial step in ensuring the complete activation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs); however, the conditions for solvent exchange vary among MOFs, even within the isostructural variants. This study examines the factors contributing to solvent exchange by investigating the isostructural M2(dobdc) (M═Mg, Co, Zn) series. Common solvents N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), ethanol (EtOH), and methanol (MeOH) are employed to assess the solvent exchange at coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) of M2(dobdc). By monitoring both solvents released from the MOF during solvent exchange and the coordination environment of metals within the MOF, a picture is constructed of exchange rates during early stages of solvent exchange as well as expulsion of the last traces of bound solvents. This differentiation is achieved by a combination of bulk monitoring of solvent phase composition and microscopic application of Raman spectroscopy on the single-crystal level. The kinetics of solvent replacement is revealed to have a substantial contribution from cooperativity; this phenomenon is observed in both the forward and reverse directions. Thermogravimetric analysis coupled with IR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to elucidate the relationship between solvent exchange rates and solvent binding energy. The solvent exchange rates are determined by the kinetic barriers of solvent exchange that do not follow the order of the solvent binding affinity. This work contributes to understanding the solvent exchange of MOFs by examining the interplay among the binding strength, exchange kinetics, and cooperativity. It further provides valuable insights for scrutinizing MOF activation protocols.

Chelate Complexes of 3d Transition Metal Ions─A Challenge for Electronic-Structure Methods?

Different electronic-structure methods were assessed for their ability to predict two important properties of the industrially relevant chelating agent nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA): its selectivity with respect to six different first-row transition metal ions and the spin-state energetics of its complex with Fe(III). The investigated methods encompassed density functional theory (DFT), the random phase approximation (RPA), coupled cluster (CC) theory, and the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method, as well as the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method and the respective on-top methods: second-order N-electron valence state perturbation theory (NEVPT2) and multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT). Different strategies for selecting active spaces were explored, and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) approach was used to solve the largest active spaces. Despite somewhat ambiguous multi-reference diagnostics, most methods gave relatively good agreement with experimental data for the chemical reactions connected to the selectivity, which only involved transition-metal complexes in their high-spin state. CC methods yielded the highest accuracy followed by range-separated DFT and AFQMC. We discussed in detail that even higher accuracies can be obtained with NEVPT2, under the prerequisite that consistent active spaces along the entire chemical reaction can be selected, which was not the case for reactions involving Fe(III). A bigger challenge for electronic-structure methods was the prediction of the spin-state energetics, which additionally involved lower spin states that exhibited larger multi-reference diagnostics. Conceptually different, typically accurate methods ranging from CC theory via DMRG-NEVPT2 in combination with large active spaces to AFQMC agreed well that the high-spin state is energetically significantly favored over the other spin states. This was in contrast to most DFT functionals and RPA which yielded a smaller stabilization and some common DFT functionals and MC-PDFT even predicting the low-spin state to be energetically most favorable.

Step-wise changes in the excited state lifetime of [Eu(D2O)9]3+ and [Eu(DOTA)(D2O)]- as a function of the number of inner-sphere O-H oscillators

Lanthanide luminescence is dominated by quenching by high-energy oscillators in the chemical environment. The rate of non-radiative energy transfer to a single H2O molecule coordinated to a Eu3+ ion exceeds the usual rates of emission by an order of magnitude. We know these rates, but the details of these energy transfer processes are yet to be established. In this work, we study the quenching rates of [Eu(D2O)9]3+ and [Eu(DOTA)(D2O)]- in H2O/D2O mixtures by sequentially exchanging the deuterons with protons. Flash freezing the solutions allows us to identify species with various D/H contents in solution and thus to quantify the energy transfer processes to individual OH-oscillators. This is not possible in solution due to fast exchange in the ensembles present at room temperature. We conclude that the energy transfer processes are accurately described, predicted, and simulated using a step-wise addition of the rates of quenching by each O-H oscillator. This documents the sequential increase in the rate of the energy transfer processes in the quenching of lanthanide luminescence, and further provides a methodology to identify isotopic impurities in deuterated lanthanide systems in solution.

From Bulk to Interface: Solvent Exchange Dynamics and Their Role in Ion Transport and the Interfacial Model of Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries

Multivalent battery chemistries have been explored in response to the increasing demand for high-energy rechargeable batteries utilizing sustainable resources. Solvation structures of working cations have been recognized as a key component in the design of electrolytes; however, most structure-property correlations of metal ions in organic electrolytes usually build upon favorable static solvation structures, often overlooking solvent exchange dynamics. We here report the ion solvation structures and solvent exchange rates of magnesium electrolytes in various solvents by using multimodal nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis and molecular dynamics/density functional theory (MD/DFT) calculations. These magnesium solvation structures and solvent exchange dynamics are correlated to the combined effects of several physicochemical properties of the solvents. Moreover, Mg2+ transport and interfacial charge transfer efficiency are found to be closely correlated to the solvent exchange rate in the binary electrolytes where the solvent exchange is tunable by the fraction of diluent solvents. Our primary findings are (1) most battery-related solvents undergo ultraslow solvent exchange coordinating to Mg2+ (with time scales ranging from 0.5 μs to 5 ms), (2) the cation transport mechanism is a mixture of vehicular and structural diffusion even at the ultraslow exchange limit (with faster solvent exchange leading to faster cation transport), and (3) an interfacial model wherein organic-rich regions facilitate desolvation and inorganic regions promote Mg2+ transport is consistent with our NMR, electrochemistry, and cryogenic X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (cryo-XPS) results. This observed ultraslow solvent exchange and its importance for ion transport and interfacial properties necessitate the judicious selection of solvents and informed design of electrolyte blends for multivalent electrolytes.

Tris buffer-accelerated ligand exchange rate for instant fluorescence detection of trivalent chromium ion

Functional nucleic acids (FNAs) have attracted a lot of attention for the rapid detection of metal ions. Cr3+ is one of the major heavy metal ions in natural waters. Due to the slow ligand exchange rate of Cr3+, the FNA-based Cr3+ sensors require long assay times, limiting the on-site applications. In this study, we report that the good's buffers containing amino and polyhydroxy groups greatly increase the ligand exchange rate of Cr3+. Using EDTA as a model coordinate ligand, the Tris buffer (100 mM, pH 7.0) showed the best acceleration effect among the eight buffers. It improved the rate constant ∼20-fold, shorten the half-time 19-fold, and lowered the activation energy ∼70% at 40 °C. The Tris buffer was then applied for sensor based on the Cr3+-binding induced fluorescence quenching of fluorescein (FAM)-labeled and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), which shortened the assay time from 1 h to 1 min. The Tris buffer also ∼100% enhanced the fluorescence intensity of FAM, achieving the 11.4-fold lower limit of detection (LOD = 6.97 nM, S/N = 3). By the combination use of the Tris buffer and ascorbic acid, the strong interference from Cu2+, Pb2+, and Fe3+ suffered in many previous reported Cr3+ sensors was avoided. The practical application of the sensor for the detection of Cr3+ spiked in the real water samples were demonstrated with high recovery percentages. The Tris buffer could be applied for other metal ions with slow ligand exchange rate (such as V2+, Co3+ and Fe2+) to solve diverse issues such as long assay time and low synthesis yield of metal complexes, without the need of heating treatment.

Characterization of the Coordination and Solvation Dynamics of Solvated Systems─Implications for the Analysis of Molecular Interactions in Solutions and Pure H2O

The characterization of solvation shells of atoms, ions, and molecules in solution is essential to relate solvation properties to chemical phenomena such as complex formation and reactivity. Different definitions of the first-shell coordination sphere from simulation data can lead to potentially conflicting data on the structural properties and associated ligand exchange dynamics. The definition of a solvation shell is typically based on a given threshold distance determined from the respective solute-solvent pair distribution function g(r) (i.e., GC). Alternatively, a nearest neighbor (NN) assignment based on geometric properties of the coordination complex without the need for a predetermined cutoff criterion, such as the relative angular distance (RAD) or the modified Voronoi (MV) tessellation, can be applied. In this study, the effect of different NN algorithms on the coordination number and ligand exchange dynamics evaluated for a series of monatomic ions in aqueous solution, carbon dioxide in aqueous and dichloromethane solutions, and pure liquid water has been investigated. In the case of the monatomic ions, the RAD approach is superior in achieving a well separated definition of the first solvation layer. In contrast, the MV algorithm provides a better separation of the NNs from a molecular point of view, leading to better results in the case of solvated CO2. When analyzing the coordination environment in pure water, the cutoff-based GC framework was found to be the most reliable approach. By comparison of the number of ligand exchange reactions and the associated mean ligand residence times (MRTs) with the properties of the coordination number autocorrelation functions, it is shown that although the average coordination numbers are sensitive to the different definitions of the first solvation shell, highly consistent estimates for the associated MRT of the solvated system are obtained in the majority of cases.

Reactivity of Organoiridium Tungsten Oxide Clusters with Transition Metal Aquo Cations

Organometallic-polyoxometalate (POM) complexes form a unique class of molecular organometallic oxides characterized by the dynamic behavior of the organometallic cations. Herein, we investigated the reactivity of Cp*Ir-octatungstate clusters (where Cp* represents pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, C5Me5-) with Werner-type transition-metal aquo cations. The addition of Ag+, Co2+, Ni2+, and M3+ (M = Cr, Fe, or In) cations to the aqueous solution of Cp*Ir-octatungstate clusters resulted in the formation of [{Ag(OH2)2}2{Cp*Ir(OH2)}2{Cp*IrW3O12(OH)}2(WO2)2] (1), Co1.5K0.8Na0.2[{trans-Co(OH2)2}{Cp*IrW3O12(OH)}2(WO2)1.3{cis-Co(OH2)2}0.7] (2-Co), Ni0.2K1.4Na0.2[{Ni(OH2)4}2{Cp*IrW3O12(OH)}2(WO2)1.1{cis-Ni(OH2)2}0.9] (2-Ni), and [{M(OH2)4}2{Cp*IrW3O12(OH)}2{cis-M(OH2)2}2](NO3)2 (M = Cr, 3-Cr; Fe, 3-Fe; or In, 3-In), respectively. All clusters share the same cubane-type {Cp*IrW3O12(OH)}5- building block, representing the first examples of organoiridium-POMs functionalized by transition-metal aquo cations. These compounds are insoluble in water, facilitating the evaluation of their heterogeneous water-oxidation properties. Notably, 2-Co generates the highest catalytic water oxidation current. This work provides a new synthetic method to introduce metal-aquo complexes on an organometallic oxide cluster, producing multimetallic molecules that model the catalytic sites of complex oxides.

On the simulation and interpretation of substrate-water exchange experiments in photosynthetic water oxidation

Water oxidation by photosystem II (PSII) sustains most life on Earth, but the molecular mechanism of this unique process remains controversial. The ongoing identification of the binding sites and modes of the two water-derived substrate oxygens ('substrate waters') in the various intermediates (Si states, i = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) that the water-splitting tetra-manganese calcium penta-oxygen (Mn4CaO5) cluster attains during the reaction cycle provides central information towards resolving the unique chemistry of biological water oxidation. Mass spectrometric measurements of single- and double-labeled dioxygen species after various incubation times of PSII with H218O provide insight into the substrate binding modes and sites via determination of exchange rates. Such experiments have revealed that the two substrate waters exchange with different rates that vary independently with the Si state and are hence referred to as the fast (Wf) and the slow (WS) substrate waters. New insight for the molecular interpretation of these rates arises from our recent finding that in the S2 state, under special experimental conditions, two different rates of WS exchange are observed that appear to correlate with the high spin and low spin conformations of the Mn4CaO5 cluster. Here, we reexamine and unite various proposed methods for extracting and assigning rate constants from this recent data set. The analysis results in a molecular model for substrate-water binding and exchange that reconciles the expected non-exchangeability of the central oxo bridge O5 when located between two Mn(IV) ions with the experimental and theoretical assignment of O5 as WS in all S states. The analysis also excludes other published proposals for explaining the water exchange kinetics.

Assignment of the slowly exchanging substrate water of nature's water-splitting cofactor

Identifying the two substrate water sites of nature's water-splitting cofactor (Mn4CaO5 cluster) provides important information toward resolving the mechanism of O-O bond formation in Photosystem II (PSII). To this end, we have performed parallel substrate water exchange experiments in the S1 state of native Ca-PSII and biosynthetically substituted Sr-PSII employing Time-Resolved Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry (TR-MIMS) and a Time-Resolved 17O-Electron-electron Double resonance detected NMR (TR-17O-EDNMR) approach. TR-MIMS resolves the kinetics for incorporation of the oxygen-isotope label into the substrate sites after addition of H218O to the medium, while the magnetic resonance technique allows, in principle, the characterization of all exchangeable oxygen ligands of the Mn4CaO5 cofactor after mixing with H217O. This unique combination shows i) that the central oxygen bridge (O5) of Ca-PSII core complexes isolated from Thermosynechococcus vestitus has, within experimental conditions, the same rate of exchange as the slowly exchanging substrate water (WS) in the TR-MIMS experiments and ii) that the exchange rates of O5 and WS are both enhanced by Ca2+→Sr2+ substitution in a similar manner. In the context of previous TR-MIMS results, this shows that only O5 fulfills all criteria for being WS. This strongly restricts options for the mechanism of water oxidation.

Mapping the distribution of electronic states within the 5D4 and 7F6 levels of Tb3+ complexes with optical spectroscopy

The Tb(III) ion has the most intense luminescence of the trivalent lanthanide(III) ions. In contrast to Eu(III), where the two levels only include a single state, the high number of electronic states in the ground (7F6) and emitting (5D4) levels makes detailed interpretations of the electronic structure-the crystal field-difficult. Here, luminescence emission and excitation spectra of Tb(III) complexes with 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA, [Tb(DOTA)(H2O)]-), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA, [Tb(EDTA)(H2O)3]-) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA, [Tb(DTPA)(H2O)]2-) as well as the Tb(III) aqua ion ([Tb(H2O)9]3+) were recorded at room temperature and in frozen solution. Using these data the electronic structure of the 5D4 multiplets of Tb(III) was mapped by considering the transitions to the singly degenerate 7F0 state. A detailed spectroscopic investigation was performed and it was found that the 5D4 multiplet could accurately be described as a single band for [Tb(H2O)9]3+, [Tb(DOTA)(H2O)]- and [Tb(EDTA)(H2O)3]-. In contrast, for [Tb(DTPA)(H2O)]2- two bands were needed. These results demonstrated the ability of describing the electronic structure of the emitting 5D4 multiplet using emission spectra. This offers an avenue for investigating the relationship between molecular structure and luminescent properties in detailed photophysical studies of Tb(III) ion complexes.

Long-Term Stable Liposome Modified by PEG-Lipid in Natural Seawater

This paper describes the stabilization of liposomes using a PEGylated lipid, N-(methylpolyoxyethylene oxycarbonyl)-1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine sodium salt (DSPE-PEGs), and the evaluation of the survival rate in natural seawater for future environmental applications. Liposomes in natural seawater were first monitored by confocal microscopy, and the stability was compared among different lengths and the introduction ratio of DSPE-PEGs. The survival rate increased with an increase in the PEG ratio. In addition, the survival rate in different cationic solutions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ solutions) was studied to estimate the effects of the DSPE-PEG introduction. We propose that these variations in liposome stability are due to the cations, specifically the interaction between the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains and divalent ions, which contribute to making it difficult for cations to access the lipid membrane. Our studies provide insights into the use of PEG lipids and may offer a promising approach to the fabrication of liposomal molecular robots using different natural environments.

Molecular Selectivity in the Binding of Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, First-Row Transition Metals, and Lanthanides with Cyclic Depsipeptides

Beauvericin (BEA) and enniatins (ENN) are cyclic hexadepsipeptide mycotoxins known for their ionophoric activities across cell membranes. While their ability to selectively bind alkali ions to form binary complexes has been studied, their interaction with multivalent metal ions to form higher-order complexes remains less explored. We report the unique characteristics of the 1:2, Mn+:BEA or ENN complexes with monovalent, divalent, and trivalent metal ions. A thorough IMS-MS analysis underscores the substantial interplay among ionic radii, coordination numbers, and their impact on conformational selection within higher-order complexes that is pertinent to ion transport. Transition metals offer insights into the effects of ion radii and ligand side chains on conformational selection, while lanthanide complexes enable a direct evaluation of coordination chemistry. An intriguing finding concerning the lanthanide complexes involves an unexpected C-H bond activation, wherein water ligands may catalyze the deprotonation of the cyclic peptides.

Protein MRI Contrast Agents as an Effective Approach for Precision Molecular Imaging

ABSTRACT

Cancer and other acute and chronic diseases are results of perturbations of common molecular determinants in key biological and signaling processes. Imaging is critical for characterizing dynamic changes in tumors and metastases, the tumor microenvironment, tumor-stroma interactions, and drug targets, at multiscale levels. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged to be a primary imaging modality for both clinical and preclinical applications due to its advantages over other modalities, including sensitivity to soft tissues, nondepth limitations, and the use of nonionizing radiation. However, extending the application of MRI to achieve both qualitative and quantitative precise molecular imaging with the capability to quantify molecular biomarkers for early detection, staging, and monitoring therapeutic treatment requires the capacity to overcome several major challenges including the trade-off between metal-binding affinity and relaxivity, which is an issue frequently associated with small chelator contrast agents. In this review, we will introduce the criteria of ideal contrast agents for precision molecular imaging and discuss the relaxivity of current contrast agents with defined first shell coordination water molecules. We will then report our advances in creating a new class of protein-targeted MRI contrast agents (ProCAs) with contributions to relaxivity largely derived from the secondary sphere and correlation time. We will summarize our rationale, design strategy, and approaches to the development and optimization of our pioneering ProCAs with desired high relaxivity, metal stability, and molecular biomarker-targeting capability, for precision MRI. From first generation (ProCA1) to third generation (ProCA32), we have achieved dual high r1 and r2 values that are 6- to 10-fold higher than clinically approved contrast agents at magnetic fields of 1.5 T, and their relaxivity values at high field are also significantly higher, which enables high resolution during small animal imaging. Further engineering of multiple targeting moieties enables ProCA32 agents that have strong biomarker-binding affinity and specificity for an array of key molecular biomarkers associated with various chronic diseases, while maintaining relaxation and exceptional metal-binding and selectivity, serum stability, and resistance to transmetallation, which are critical in mitigating risks associated with metal toxicity. Our leading product ProCA32.collagen has enabled the first early detection of liver metastasis from multiple cancers at early stages by mapping the tumor environment and early stage of fibrosis from liver and lung in vivo, with strong translational potential to extend to precision MRI for preclinical and clinical applications for precision diagnosis and treatment.

Preliminary studies of XANES and DFT calculation of Ru extraction by imino-diacetamide and related compounds

We connected three research fields on Ru extraction, XANES, and DFT calculation and elucidate the sequence of distribution ratio (D) and their reactions. The magnitude order of the distribution ratio, D(Ru), from acids, HCl > H2SO4 > HNO3 > HClO4, by IDOA indicates to extract readily the stable Ru-Cl ions. The XANES signals, which suggests the electrical charge of Ru(III) extracted into the organic phase, supports the ion-pairing extraction of the anionic Ru-Cl complex with an extractant protonated. Ru(III) in other acids might be extracted by solvation of extractant, thus ion-pair extraction is stronger than solvation in Ru extraction. According to the D(Ru), the same extractant trend, NTAamide > MIDOA > IDOA, as the energy gap of HOMO and LUMO by DFT calculation is found, which suggests that DFT calculation can give the relative magnitude of each D(M) value when extractant and metal in an extraction are determined.

Effect of hydration equilibria on the relaxometric properties of Gd(III) complexes: new insights into old systems

We present a detailed relaxometric and computational investigation of three Gd(III) complexes that exist in solution as an equilibrium of two species with a different number of coordinated water molecules: [Gd(H2O)q]3+ (q = 8, 9), [Gd(EDTA)(H2O)q]- and [Gd(CDTA)(H2O)q]- (q = 2, 3). 1H nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion (NMRD) data were recorded from aqueous solutions of these complexes using a wide Larmor frequency range (0.01-500 MHz). These data were complemented with 17O transverse relaxation rates and chemical shifts recorded at different temperatures. The simultaneous fit of the NMRD and 17O NMR data was guided by computational studies performed at the DFT and CASSCF/NEVPT2 levels, which provided information on Gd⋯H distances, 17O hyperfine coupling constants and the zero-field splitting (ZFS) energy, which affects electronic relaxation. The hydration equilibrium did not have a very important effect in the fits of the experimental data for [Gd(H2O)q]3+ and [Gd(CDTA)(H2O)q]-, as the hydration equilibrium is largely shifted to the species with the lowest hydration number (q = 8 and 2, respectively). The quality of the analysis improves however considerably for [Gd(EDTA)(H2O)q]- upon considering the effect of the hydration equilibrium. As a result, this study provides for the first time an analysis of the relaxation properties of this important model system, as well as accurate parameters for [Gd(H2O)q]3+ and [Gd(CDTA)(H2O)q]-.

G0W0 Ionization Potentials of First-Row Transition Metal Aqua Ions

We report computations of the vertical ionization potentials within the GW approximation of the near-complete series of first-row transition metal (V-Cu) aqua ions in their most common oxidation states, i.e., V3+, Cr3+, Cr2+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+. The d-orbital occupancy of these systems spans a broad range from d2 to d9. All of the structures were first optimized at the density functional theory level using a large cluster of explicit water molecules that are embedded in a continuum solvation model. Vertical ionization potentials were computed with the one-shot G0W0 approach on a range of transition metal ion clusters (6, 18, 40, and 60 explicit water molecules), wherein the convergence with respect to the basis set size was evaluated using the systems with 40 water molecules. We assess the results using three different density functional approximations as starting points for the vertical ionization potential calculations, namely, G0W0@PBE, G0W0@PBE0, and G0W0@r2SCAN. While the predicted ground-state structures are similar to all three exchange-correlation functionals, the vertical ionization potentials were in closer agreement with experiment when using the G0W0@PBE0 and G0W0@r2SCAN approaches, with the r2SCAN-based calculations being significantly less expensive. Computed bond distances and vertical ionization potentials for all structures are in good agreement with available experimental data.

A Personal Account on Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms

The presented Review is focused on the latest research in the field of inorganic chemistry performed by the van Eldik group and his collaborators. The first part of the manuscript concentrates on the interaction of nitric oxide and its derivatives with biologically important compounds. We summarized mechanistic information on the interaction between model porphyrin systems (microperoxidase) and NO as well as the recent studies on the formation of nitrosylcobalamin (CblNO). The following sections cover the characterization of the Ru(II)/Ru(III) mixed-valence ion-pair complexes, including Ru(II)/Ru(III)(edta) complexes. The last part concerns the latest mechanistic information on the DFT techniques applications. Each section presents the most important results with the mechanistic interpretations.

Optical Imaging Opportunities to Inspect the Nature of Cytosolic Iron Pools

The chemical nature of intracellular labile iron pools (LIPs) is described. By virtue of the kinetic lability of these pools, it is suggested that the isolation of such species by chromatography methods will not be possible, but rather mass spectrometric techniques should be adopted. Iron-sensitive fluorescent probes, which have been developed for the detection and quantification of LIP, are described, including those specifically designed to monitor cytosolic, mitochondrial, and lysosomal LIPs. The potential of near-infrared (NIR) probes for in vivo monitoring of LIP is discussed.

Extraction of Rh(III) from hydrochloric acid by protonated NTAamide(C6) and analogous compounds and understanding of extraction equilibria by using UV spectroscopy and DFT calculations

Extraction of Rh from hydrochloric acid is conducted using NTAamide(C6) (N,N,N´,N´,N´´,N´´-hexahexyl-nitrilotriacetamide) and other related compounds. We use the ion-pair extraction of anionic species of Rh-chloride and protonated extractant. Rh ions exist as Rh(Cl)n(H2O)6-n (n ≤ 5) and the tertiary nitrogen atom in an extractant are protonated to produce a quaternary amine in acidic condition. The D(Rh) values are changeable because the Rh-Cl-H2O complex forms from + 3 to - 2 valency. Rh-chloride ion with a peak of spectrum at 504 nm can be extracted effectively, where RhCl4(H2O)- and RhCl5(H2O)2- exist from Density functional theory calculation and UV spectrum. The maximum distribution ratio (D) of Rh(III) is 16, and 85 mM Rh can be extracted from 1 M HCl dissolving 96 mM, due to less third phase formation. Approximate 80% of Rh can be stripped by the water-soluble reagents having the activities of neutralization and solvation. The figure for the Graphical Index saved in the JPEG, PNG or TIFF format at 300 dpi should be pasted with the size adjusted to the frame below (5 cm long and 8 cm wide).

Aminodealkenylation: Ozonolysis and copper catalysis convert C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds to C(sp3)-N bonds

Great efforts have been directed toward alkene π bond amination. In contrast, analogous functionalization of the adjacent C(sp3)-C(sp2) σ bonds is much rarer. Here we report how ozonolysis and copper catalysis under mild reaction conditions enable alkene C(sp3)-C(sp2) σ bond-rupturing cross-coupling reactions for the construction of new C(sp3)-N bonds. We have used this unconventional transformation for late-stage modification of hormones, pharmaceutical reagents, peptides, and nucleosides. Furthermore, we have coupled abundantly available terpenes and terpenoids with nitrogen nucleophiles to access artificial terpenoid alkaloids and complex chiral amines. In addition, we applied a commodity chemical, α-methylstyrene, as a methylation reagent to prepare methylated nucleosides directly from canonical nucleosides in one synthetic step. Our mechanistic investigation implicates an unusual copper ion pair cooperative process.

In Situ Observation of Solvent Exchange Kinetics in a MOF with Coordinatively Unsaturated Sites

Solvent exchange of synthesis solvent within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an essential process for the activation of coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) to achieve an optimal surface area; activation of the CUS is required to exploit the versatile applications of MOFs. However, it is challenging to replace CUS-bound synthesis solvent prior to MOF activation, which can lead to a structural collapse and reduced surface area post-evacuation. Herein, we quantify the exchange behavior of a copper paddlewheel-based CUS-MOF (HKUST-1) in the presence of three different solvents: ethanol (EtOH), dichloromethane (DCM), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The DMF release profiles are monitored via in situ observation of the exchange solvent composition via 1H NMR and Raman spectroscopy at the macroscopic scale. Furthermore, the change in solvent within a single crystal is measured to directly elucidate the exchange behavior. We demonstrate the DMF release profile from HKUST-1 exhibits different rate laws depending on whether the solvent exchange occurs at the CUS or is purely diffusive through the pores. This contribution represents the first characterization of release from a CUS-MOF as a function exchange solvent and reveals that solvent exchange in a CUS-MOF is not diffusion-limited, but rather is limited by the solvent exchange kinetics at the metal center. Insights from this study can be generalized to the variety of copper-paddlewheel-based MOFs, informing best practices for solvent exchange.

Impact of hierarchical water dipole orderings on the dynamics of aqueous salt solutions

Ions exhibit highly ion-specific complex behaviours when solvated in water, which remains a mystery despite the fundamental importance of ion solvation in nature, science, and technology. Here we explain these ion-specific properties by the ion-induced hierarchical dipolar, translational, and bond-orientational orderings of ion hydration shell under the competition between ion-water electrostatic interactions and inter-water hydrogen bonding. We first characterise this competition by a new length λHB(q), explaining the ion-specific effects on solution dynamics. Then, by continuously tuning ion size and charge, we find that the bond-orientational order of the ion hydration shell highly develops for specific ion size and charge combinations. This ordering drastically stabilises the hydration shell; its degree changes the water residence time around ions by 11 orders of magnitude for main-group ions. These findings are fundamental to ionic processes in aqueous solutions, providing a physical principle for electrolyte design and application.

Copper-Catalyzed Enantioconvergent Radical C(sp3)-N Cross-Coupling of Activated Racemic Alkyl Halides with (Hetero)aromatic Amines under Ambient Conditions

The enantioconvergent C(sp³)-N cross-coupling of racemic alkyl halides with (hetero)aromatic amines represents an ideal means to afford enantioenriched N-alkyl (hetero)aromatic amines yet has remained unexplored due to the catalyst poisoning specifically for strong-coordinating heteroaromatic amines. Here, we demonstrate a copper-catalyzed enantioconvergent radical C(sp³)-N cross-coupling of activated racemic alkyl halides with (hetero)aromatic amines under ambient conditions. The key to success is the judicious selection of appropriate multidentate anionic ligands through readily fine-tuning both electronic and steric properties for the formation of a stable and rigid chelating Cu complex. Thus, this kind of ligand could not only enhance the reducing capability of a copper catalyst to provide an enantioconvergent radical pathway but also avoid the coordination with other coordinating heteroatoms, thereby overcoming catalyst poisoning and/or chiral ligand displacement. This protocol covers a wide range of coupling partners (89 examples for activated racemic secondary/tertiary alkyl bromides/chlorides and (hetero)aromatic amines) with high functional group compatibility. When allied with follow-up transformations, it provides a highly flexible platform to access synthetically useful enantioenriched amine building blocks.

Superparamagnetic Spinel-Ferrite Nano-Adsorbents Adapted for Hg2+, Dy3+, Tb3+ Removal/Recycling: Synthesis, Characterization, and Assessment of Toxicity

In the present work, superparamagnetic adsorbents based on 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (APTMS)-coated maghemite (γFe₂O₃@SiO₂-NH₂) and cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄@SiO₂-NH₂) nanoparticles were prepared and characterized using transmission-electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM/EDXS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), specific surface-area measurements (BET), zeta potential (ζ) measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and magnetometry (VSM). The adsorption of Dy³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Hg²⁺ ions onto adsorbent surfaces in model salt solutions was tested. The adsorption was evaluated in terms of adsorption efficiency (%), adsorption capacity (mg/g), and desorption efficiency (%) based on the results of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Both adsorbents, γFe₂O₃@SiO₂-NH₂ and CoFe₂O₄@SiO₂-NH₂, showed high adsorption efficiency toward Dy³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Hg²⁺ ions, ranging from 83% to 98%, while the adsorption capacity reached the following values of Dy³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Hg²⁺, in descending order: Tb (4.7 mg/g) > Dy (4.0 mg/g) > Hg (2.1 mg/g) for γFe₂O₃@SiO₂-NH₂; and Tb (6.2 mg/g) > Dy (4.7 mg/g) > Hg (1.2 mg/g) for CoFe₂O₄@SiO₂-NH₂. The results of the desorption with 100% of the desorbed Dy³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Hg²⁺ ions in an acidic medium indicated the reusability of both adsorbents. A cytotoxicity assessment of the adsorbents on human-skeletal-muscle derived cells (SKMDCs), human fibroblasts, murine macrophage cells (RAW264.7), and human-umbilical-vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was conducted. The survival, mortality, and hatching percentages of zebrafish embryos were monitored. All the nanoparticles showed no toxicity in the zebrafish embryos until 96 hpf, even at a high concentration of 500 mg/L.

High-Flux Nanofibrous Composite Reverse Osmosis Membrane Containing Interfacial Water Channels for Desalination

A nanofibrous composite reverse osmosis (RO) membrane with a polyamide barrier layer containing interfacial water channels was fabricated on an electrospun nanofibrous substrate via an interfacial polymerization process. The RO membrane was employed for desalination of brackish water and exhibited enhanced permeation flux as well as rejection ratio. Nanocellulose was prepared by sequential oxidations of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) and sodium periodate systems and surface grafting with different alkyl groups including octyl, decanyl, dodecanyl, tetradecanyl, cetyl, and octadecanyl groups. The chemical structure of the modified nanocellulose was verified subsequently by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and solid NMR measurements. Two monomers, trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD), were employed to prepare a cross-linked polyamide matrix, i.e., the barrier layer of the RO membrane, which integrated with the alkyl groups-grafted nanocellulose to build up interfacial water channels via interfacial polymerization. The top and cross-sectional morphologies of the composite barrier layer were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to verify the integration structure of the nanofibrous composite containing water channels. The aggregation and distribution of water molecules in the nanofibrous composite RO membrane verified the existence of water channels, demonstrated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The desalination performance of the nanofibrous composite RO membrane was conducted and compared with that of commercially available RO membranes in the processing of brackish water, where 3 times higher permeation flux and 99.1% rejection ratio against NaCl were accomplished. This indicated that the engineering of interfacial water channels in the barrier layer could substantially increase the permeation flux of the nanofibrous composite membrane while retaining the high rejection ratio as well, i.e., to break through the trade-off between permeation flux and rejection ratio. Antifouling properties, chlorine resistance, and long-term desalination performance were also demonstrated to evaluate the potential applications of the nanofibrous composite RO membrane; remarkable durability and robustness were achieved in addition to 3 times higher permeation flux and a higher rejection ratio against commercial RO membranes in brackish water desalination.

Nuclear spin relaxation in aqueous paramagnetic ion solutions

A Brownian shell model describing the random rotational motion of a spherical shell of uniform particle density is presented and validated by molecular dynamics simulations. The model is applied to proton spin rotation in aqueous paramagnetic ion complexes to yield an expression for the Larmor-frequency-dependent nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice relaxation rate T_{1}^{-1}(ω) describing the dipolar coupling of the nuclear spin of the proton with the electronic spin of the ion. The Brownian shell model provides a significant enhancement to existing particle-particle dipolar models without added complexity, allowing fits to experimental T_{1}^{-1}(ω) dispersion curves without arbitrary scaling parameters. The model is successfully applied to measurements of T_{1}^{-1}(ω) from aqueous manganese(II), iron(III), and copper(II) systems where the scalar coupling contribution is known to be small. Appropriate combinations of Brownian shell and translational diffusion models, representing the inner and outer sphere relaxation contributions, respectively, are shown to provide excellent fits. Quantitative fits are obtained to the full dispersion curve of each aquoion with just five fit parameters, with the distance and time parameters each taking a physically justifiable numerical value.

Electronic Structure of Neodymium(III) and Europium(III) Resolved in Solution Using High-Resolution Optical Spectroscopy and Population Analysis

Solution chemistry of the lanthanide(III) ions is unexplored and relevant: extraction and recycling processes exclusively operate in solution, MRI is a solution-phase method, and bioassays are done in solution. However, the molecular structure of the lanthanide(III) ions in solution is poorly described, especially for the near-IR (NIR)-emitting lanthanides, as these are difficult to investigate using optical tools, which has limited the availability of experimental data. Here we report a custom-built spectrometer dedicated to investigation of lanthanide(III) luminescence in the NIR region. Absorption, luminescence excitation, and luminescence spectra of five complexes of europium(III) and neodymium(III) were acquired. The obtained spectra display high spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios. Using the high-quality data, a method for determining the electronic structure for the thermal ground states and emitting states is proposed. It combines Boltzmann distributions with population analysis and uses the experimentally determined relative transition probabilities from both excitation and emission data. The method was tested on the five europium(III) complexes and was used to resolve the electronic structures of the ground state and the emitting state of neodymium(III) in five different solution complexes. This is the first step toward correlating optical spectra with chemical structure in solution for NIR-emitting lanthanide complexes.

Ligand exchange at tetra-coordinated beryllium centres

Mono and dinuclear phosphine complexes of beryllium halides [(PMe₃)₂BeX₂], [(PMe₃)BeX₂]₂ and [(PCy₃)BeX₂]₂ (X = Cl, Br, I) were synthesised and characterised via NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. Dissociation and ligand exchange processes at these complexes were investigated through variable temperature NMR experiments in combination with line shape analysis and complemented by quantum chemical calculations. The PMe₃ dissociation energy is smallest in [(PMe₃)₂BeCl₂], while PMe₃ exchange is similar in energy in all mononuclear [(PMe₃)₂BeX₂] complexes and follows an interchange mechanism. While [(PMe₃)BeX₂]₂ dissociates homolytically, [(PCy₃)BeX₂]₂ cleaves one phosphine ligand. These distinctive dissociation processes account for the different chemical behaviour of these complexes.

Towards Luminescent Vanadium(II) Complexes with Slow Magnetic Relaxation and Quantum Coherence

Molecular entities with doublet or triplet ground states find increasing interest as potential molecular quantum bits (qubits). Complexes with higher multiplicity might even function as qudits and serve to encode further quantum bits. Vanadium(II) ions in octahedral ligand fields with quartet ground states and small zero-field splittings qualify as qubits with optical read out thanks to potentially luminescent spin-flip states. We identified two V²⁺ complexes [V(ddpd)₂ ]²⁺ with the strong field ligand N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridine-2-yl-pyridine-2,6-diamine (ddpd) in two isomeric forms (cis-fac and mer) as suitable candidates. The energy gaps between the two lowest Kramers doublets amount to 0.2 and 0.5 cm^-1 allowing pulsed EPR experiments at conventional Q-band frequencies (35 GHz). Both isomers possess spin-lattice relaxation times T₁ of around 300 μs and a phase memory time T_M of around 1 μs at 5 K. Furthermore, the mer isomer displays slow magnetic relaxation in an applied field of 400 mT. While the vanadium(III) complexes [V(ddpd)₂ ]³⁺ are emissive in the near-IR-II region, the [V(ddpd)₂ ]²⁺ complexes are non-luminescent due to metal-to-ligand charge transfer admixture to the spin-flip states.

Ultrafast spectroscopy of RuII polypyridine complexes in the gas phase and the liquid phase: [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)2(nicotinamide)2]2

[Ru(bipyridine)₂(nicotinamide)₂]²⁺ (1) and its monoaqua-complex [Ru(bipyridine)₂(nicotinamide)(H₂O)]²⁺ (2) were spectroscopically studied for the first time in the gas phase by static and time resolved UV photodissociation spectroscopy, observing nicotinamide and H₂O ligand dissociation for 1 and 2, respectively. Both processes and their ultrafast dynamics were investigated in parallel by transient absorption spectroscopy in aqueous solution. The latter data were newly acquired for the long-wavelength MLCT band excitation of 1 and provide novel ultrafast ligand dissociation results for 2, confirming the gas phase results, i.e., exclusive H₂O cleavage over nicotinamide loss. Similar apparent time constants in the sub-ps and few ps ranges were obtained for 1 in both phases, whereas a larger time constant of ca. two hundreds of ps for the ground state recovery was observed exclusively in the solution phase. Our reaction scheme accounts for faster dissociation dynamics in the gas phase by energetical lowering of the ³MC vs. the ³MLCT states by lack of solvent stabilization of the latter. Based on the apparent time constants, we favour, for the solution dynamics, a fast bimodal vibrational deactivation in the ³MLCT/³MC manifolds and a slow dissociation obfuscated by the ground state recovery. This is substantiated by a similar reaction scheme proposed for the ultrafast dynamics of 2, resulting in a new assignment for transient absorption features with λ > 550 nm to the ³MC manifold, and a common kinetic description for 1 and 2. Computations at the TD-DFT/cc-PVTZ/MDF28 level support our spectroscopic findings and the suggested deactivation pathways.

Effect of buffers and pH in antenna sensitized Eu(III) luminescence

The photophysics of a europium(III) complex of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacycododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid-10-(2-methylene)-1-azathioxanthone was investigated in three buffer systems and at three pH values. The buffers-phosphate buffered saline (PBS), 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES), and universal buffer (UB)-had no effect on the europium luminescence, but a lower overall emission intensity was determined in HEPES. It was found that this was due to quenching of the 1-azathioxanthone first excited singlet state by HEPES. The effect of pH on the photophysics of the complex was found to be minimal, and protonation of the pyridine nitrogen was found to be irrelevant. Even so, pH was shown to change the intensity ratio between 1-azathioxanthone fluorescence and europium luminescence. It was concluded that the full photophysics of a potential molecular probe should be investigated to achieve the best possible results in any application.

New ruthenium(II) complexes with quinone diimine and substituted bipyridine as inert ligands: synthesis, characterization, mechanism of action, DNA/HSA binding affinity and cytotoxic activity

This paper presents the synthesis and structural characterization of a series of new ruthenium(II) complexes 1-7, with the general formula mer-[RuL₃(N-N)Cl]Cl, where L is 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (tpy) or 4'-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (Cl-Ph-tpy) and N-N is o-benzoquinonediimine (o-bqdi), 2,3-naphthoquinonediimine (nqdi), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dmbpy) or 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (dcbpy). The kinetic results showed that the ligand substitution reactions of new Ru(II)-polypyridyl complexes with biomolecules were affected by different substituents and the aromaticity of meridional tridentate and bidentate spectator ligands as well as by the nature of the entering nucleophile. The reactivity of the complexes increases in the order: dmbpy < dcbipy < nqdi < o-bqdi. In addition, quantum chemical calculations were performed to support the interpretation and discussion of the experimental data. Furthermore, combining ethidium bromide (EB) and Hoechst 33258 (2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-5-[5-(4-methylpiperazine-1-yl)benzimidazo-2-yl]-benzimidazole) fluorescence assay results implied that 1-7 might interact with calf thymus DNA through partial intercalation and/or minor groove binding. The human serum albumin (HAS)-fluorescence binding studies involving the site markers, eosin Y, as a marker for site I of subdomain IIA, and ibuprofen, as a marker for site II of subdomain IIIA, showed that Ru(II) compounds bind to both sites with moderately strong affinity (K_b = 10⁴-10⁶ M^-1). Moreover, these DNA/HSA experimental results were confirmed by molecular docking. Complexes 2, 5 and 6 exerted good to strong and highly selective cytotoxic activity against breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB 231), colorectal carcinoma (HCT116) and cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa). Depending on their structure and cell line, the complexes acted differently in terms of their influence on autophagy, the cell cycle and the engaged apoptotic pathway.

Characterization of a Ferryl Flip in Electronically Tuned Nonheme Complexes. Consequences in Hydrogen Atom Transfer Reactivity

Two oxoiron(IV) isomers (^R 2a and ^R 2b) of general formula [Fe^IV (O)(^R PyNMe₃ )(CH₃ CN)]²⁺ are obtained by reaction of their iron(II) precursor with NBu₄ IO₄ . The two isomers differ in the position of the oxo ligand, cis and trans to the pyridine donor. The mechanism of isomerization between ^R 2a and ^R 2b has been determined by kinetic and computational analyses uncovering an unprecedented path for interconversion of geometrical oxoiron(IV) isomers. The activity of the two oxoiron(IV) isomers in hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions shows that ^R 2a reacts one order of magnitude faster than ^R 2b, which is explained by a repulsive noncovalent interaction between the ligand and the substrate in ^R 2b. Interestingly, the electronic properties of the R substituent in the ligand pyridine ring do not have a significant effect on reaction rates. Overall, the intrinsic structural aspects of each isomer define their relative HAT reactivity, overcoming changes in electronic properties of the ligand.

Metamorphic oxygen-evolving molecular Ru and Ir catalysts

Today sustainable and clean energy conversion strategies are based on sunlight and the use of water as a source of protons and electrons, in a similar manner as it happens in Photosystem II. To achieve this, the charge separation state induced by light has to be capable of oxidising water by 4 protons and 4 electrons and generating molecular oxygen. This oxidation occurs by the intermediacy of a catalyst capable of finding low-energy pathways via proton-coupled electron transfer steps. The high energy involved in the thermodynamics of water oxidation reaction, coupled with its mechanistic complexity, is responsible for the difficulty of discovering efficient and oxidatively robust molecules capable of achieving such a challenging task. A significant number of Ru coordination complexes have been identified as water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) and are among the best understood from a mechanistic perspective. In this review, we describe the catalytic performance of these complexes and focus our attention on the factors that influence their performance during catalysis, especially in cases where a detailed mechanistic investigation has been carried out. The collective information extracted from all the catalysts studied allows one to identify the key features that govern the complex chemistry associated with the catalytic water oxidation reaction. This includes the stability of trans-O-Ru-O groups, the change in coordination number from CN6 to CN7 at Ru high oxidation states, the ligand flexibility, the capacity to undergo intramolecular proton transfer, the bond strain, the axial ligand substitution, and supramolecular effects. Overall, combining all this information generates a coherent view of this complex chemistry.

The two-species phosphate adsorption kinetics on goethite

Studying the adsorption-desorption kinetics of ions and molecules is crucial to understand the mobility of nutrients and pollutants in the environment. This article reports the adsorption-desorption kinetics of phosphate on goethite, as measured by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy at pH 4.5, 7.0 and 9.5. The system phosphate-goethite has become a model system to test new experimental setups and theories to understand the behavior of pollutants with phosphonic or phosphinic moieties such as glyphosate or glufosinate. One of the main difficulties in the analysis of ATR-FTIR spectra in adsorption-desorption kinetics is to calibrate the equipment to convert absorbance vs. t curves into adsorption vs. t curves, and thus the methodology to achieve a good calibration using spectroscopic data in combination with adsorption isotherms is clearly described. The time evolution of the different surface species was monitored simultaneously during adsorption and desorption at different pH, showing the advantages of this spectroscopy over traditional adsorption methods that only quantify total adsorption. Results were analysed in terms of a simple adsorption-desorption model that takes into account transport, attachment, detachment and surface transformation of the adsorbed species. The same rate parameters at a given pH could predict well the adsorption-desorption kinetics of the two formed surface species and the corresponding adsorption isotherm, giving new insights into the dynamics of phosphate on the surface of goethite. It was found that phosphate desorbed faster from goethite at low pH than at high pH, which is counterintuitive, but has good practical and environmental applications.

Pd(II) Complexes with Pyridine Ligands: Substituent Effects on the NMR Data, Crystal Structures, and Catalytic Activity

A wide range of functionalized pyridine ligands have been employed to synthesize a variety of Pd(II) complexes of the general formulas [PdL₄](NO₃)₂ and [PdL₂Y₂], where L = 4-X-py and Y = Cl^– or NO₃^–. Their structures have been unambiguously established via analytical and spectroscopic methods in solution (NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry) as well as in the solid state (X-ray diffraction). This in-depth characterization has shown that the functionalization of ligand molecules with groups of either electron-withdrawing or -donating nature (EWG and EDG) results in significant changes in the physicochemical properties of the desired coordination compounds. Downfield shifts of signals in the ¹H NMR spectra were observed upon coordination within and across the complex families, clearly indicating the relationship between NMR chemical shifts and the ligand basicity as estimated from pK_a values. A detailed crystallographic study has revealed the operation of a variety of weak interactions, which may be factors explaining aspects of the solution chemistry of the complexes. The Pd(II) complexes have been found to be efficient and versatile precatalysts in Suzuki–Miyaura and Heck cross-coupling reactions within a scope of structurally distinct substrates, and factors have been identified that have contributed to efficiency improvement in both processes.

Ligand Steric Interactions Modulate Multidentate Ligand Exchange Pathways: Kinetics of Nickel(II) Ion Capture from N-Substituted IDA Complexes by CDTA

Exchange reactions between multidentate ligands (also known as chelating agents) contribute to kinetic control of metal ion speciation in aquatic environments. However, the complexity of the stepwise reaction mechanism complicates predictions of kinetic behavior (rates, rate laws, and mechanisms). Clarity is achieved with the adjunctive-semijunctive-disjunctive paradigm, which categorizes multidentate ligand exchange pathways along a continuum according to the decreasing ease of forming intermediate mixed-ligand ternary complexes. In order to better understand how steric interaction between entering and leaving ligands affects reaction pathways and kinetic behavior, we use a capillary electrophoresis method to monitor exchange between trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetate (CDTA) and nickel(II) complexes with each of the following N-substituted iminodiacetate ligands (XIDA), iminodiacetate (IDA), methyliminodiacetate (MIDA), and benzyliminodiacetate (BIDA). Kinetic modeling indicates that reactions between CDTA and 1:1 nickel-XIDA complexes occur via parallel adjunctive and disjunctive pathways. With greater steric bulk of N-substituents on iminodiacetate, product formation via a disjunctive pathway increases while formation via the adjunctive pathway decreases. Kinetic analysis demonstrates how the shift in reaction pathways has a nonlinear effect on both the magnitude of the overall rate and the rate dependence on ligand concentrations. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of this work for understanding dynamic metal ion speciation in the environment.

Hydration of divalent lanthanides, Sm2+ and Eu2+ : A molecular dynamics study with polarizable AMOEBA force field

The chemistry of divalent lanthanides, Ln2+ , is a growing sub-field of heavy element chemistry owing to new synthetic approaches. However, some theoretical aspects of these unusual cations are currently underdeveloped, especially as they relate to their dynamic properties in solution. In this work, we address the hydration of two of the classical Ln2+ cations, Sm2+ and Eu2+ , using atomic multipole optimized energetic for biomolecular applications (AMOEBA) force fields. These cations have not been parameterized to date with AMOEBA, and few studies are available because of their instability with respect to oxidation in aqueous media. Coordination numbers (CN's) of 8.2 and 8.1 respectively for Sm2+ and Eu2+ , and 8.8 for both Sm3+ and Eu3+ have been obtained and are in good agreement with the few available AIMD and X-ray absorption fine structures studies. The decreased CN of Ln2+ compared with Ln3+ arises from progressive water exchange events that indicates the gradual stabilization of 8-coordinate structures with respect to 9-coordinate geometries. Moreover, the effects of the chloride counter anions on the coordination of Ln2+ cations have been studied at different chloride concentrations in this work. Lastly, water exchange times of Ln2+ cations have been calculated to provide a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of Eu2+ and Sm2+ in aqueous chloride media.

Bisulfite activated permanganate for oxidative water decontamination

Recently, bisulfite-activated permanganate (MnO₄^-; Mn(VII)) process has attracted considerable attention as a novel class of advanced oxidation technology for destruction of organic contaminants in water. However, disputes over the underlying activation mechanism as well as reactive species generated in the Mn(VII)/bisulfite system remain for a long period due to the fairly complex chemistry involved in this system. This article aims to present a critical review on scientific development of the Mn(VII)/bisulfite system, with particular focus on the generation and contribution of various reactive intermediates. Both reactive manganese species (RMnS) (i.e., soluble Mn(III), Mn(V), and Mn(VI)) and radical species (primarily SO₄^•-) are identified as the oxidizing components responsible for enhanced degradation of organic contaminants by the Mn(VII)/bisulfite system. Bisulfite plays a dual role of being an activating agent for reactive intermediates generation and acting as a complexing agent to stabilize RMnS. Solution chemistry (e.g., the [Mn(VII)]/[bisulfite] molar ratio, solution pH, the type of contaminants, ligands, and water matrix components) greatly impacts the generation and consumption of RMnS and radicals, thus influencing the degradation kinetics and pathways of organics. Particularly, dissolved oxygen (DO) is a vital factor for driving the oxidation of organics since the absence of DO can block the generation of SO₄^•- and meantime causes the consumption of RMnS by excess SO₃^•- as a strong reductant. Interestingly, ferrate (FeO₄^2-, Fe(VI)) and hexavalent chromium (CrO₄^2-/HCrO₄^-, Cr(VI)) that are high-valent metal oxyanions analogous to Mn(VII) can be activated by bisulfite via a similar pathway (i.e. both high-valent metal-oxo intermediates and reactive radicals are involved). Furthermore, key knowledge gaps are identified and future research needs are proposed to address the potential challenges encountered in practical application of the Mn(VII)/bisulfite oxidation technology.

Revisiting the assignment of innocent and non-innocent counterions in lanthanide(III) solution chemistry

Lanthanides are found in critical applications from display technology to renewable energy. Often, these rare earth elements are used as alloys or functional materials, yet access to them is through solution processes. In aqueous solutions, the rare earths are found predominantly as trivalent ions and charge balance dictates that counterions are present. The fast ligand exchange and lack of directional bonding in lanthanide complexes have led to questions regarding the speciation of Ln³⁺ solvates in the presence of various counterions and the distinction between innocent = non-coordinating and non-innocent = coordinating counterions. There is limited agreement as to which group counterions belong to, which led to this report. By using Eu³⁺ luminescence, it was possible to clearly distinguish between coordinating and non-coordinating ions. To interpret the results, it was required to bridge the descriptions of ion pairing and coordination. The data-in the form of Eu³⁺ luminescence spectra and luminescence lifetimes from solutions with varying concentrations of acetate, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, perchlorate and triflate-was contrasted to those obtained with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA^4-), which allowed for the distinction between three Ln³⁺-anion interaction types. It was possible to conclude which counterions are truly innocent (e.g. ClO₄^- and OTf^-) and which clearly coordinate (e.g. NO₃^- and AcO^-). Finally, a considerable amount of data from systems studied under similar conditions allowed the minimum perturbation arising from the inner sphere or outer sphere coordination in Eu³⁺ complexes to be identified.

Diffusions in Aqueous Solutions with Multivalent Cations and Especially in Cationic First Hydration Shell

Compared with univalent cationic diffusion, little is known about the diffusion behavior of multivalent cations let alone the diffusion of water in their first hydration shell. Here, we show that all published translational diffusion coefficients of multivalent cations and water measured at room temperature exhibit the same concentration dependence when plotted as a function of the mass fraction of free water or of hydrated solute. This behavior is held until only hydration and confined water remain in solutions, wherein their concentration dependences become cationic charge number-dependent. We also found that the iceberg model can well describe the diffusions of multivalent cations with decreasing water content until only hydration water is present. However, ¹H-pulsed-field-gradient nuclear magnetic resonance measurements confirmed that ¹H in the first hydration shell diffuses faster than Al³⁺ at room temperature and they have the same diffusion coefficient only with decreasing the temperature down to about 243 K. Therefore, iceberg model only equivalently describes the effect of strong ion-water interaction on multivalent cationic diffusion. These results will also help us reconceive our current understanding of the pathway for hydration water affecting the diffusion behavior of solutes with relatively weak solute-water interactions.

Stochastic Model of Solvent Exchange in the First Coordination Shell of Aqua Ions

Ion microsolvation is a basic, yet fundamental, process of ionic solutions underlying many relevant phenomena in either biological or nanotechnological applications, such as solvent reorganization energy, ion transport, catalytic activity, and so on. As a consequence, it is a topic of extensive investigations by various experimental techniques, ranging from X-ray diffraction to NMR relaxation and from calorimetry to vibrational spectroscopy, and theoretical approaches, especially those based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The conventional microscopic view of ion solvation is usually provided by a "static" cluster model representing the first ion-solvent coordination shell. Despite the merits of such a simple model, however, ion coordination in solution should be better regarded as a complex population of dynamically interchanging molecular configurations. Such a more comprehensive view is more subtle to characterize and often elusive to standard approaches. In this work, we report on an effective computational strategy aiming at providing a detailed picture of solvent coordination and exchange around aqua ions, thus including the main structural, thermodynamic, and dynamic properties of ion microsolvation, such as the most probable first-shell complex structures, the corresponding free energies, the interchanging energy barriers, and the solvent-exchange rates. Assuming the solvent coordination number as an effective reaction coordinate and combining MD simulations with enhanced sampling and master-equation approaches, we propose a stochastic model suitable for properly describing, at the same time, the thermodynamics and kinetics of ion-water coordination. The model is successfully tested toward various divalent ions (Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cd²⁺) in aqueous solution, considering also the case of a high ionic concentration. Results show a very good agreement with those issuing from brute-force MD simulations, when available, and support the reliable prediction of rare ion-water complexes and slow water exchange rates not easily accessible to usual computational methods.

Development and Validation of an Analytical HPLC Method to Assess Chemical and Radiochemical Purity of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-Exendin-4 Produced by a Fully Automated Method

Background: Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R) is preferentially expressed in pancreatic islets, especially in β-cells, and highly expressed in human insulinomas and gastrinomas. In recent years several GLP-1R-avid radioligands have been developed to image insulin-secreting tumors or to provide a tentative quantitative in vivo biomarker of pancreatic β-cell mass. Exendin-4, a 39-amino acid peptide with high binding affinity to GLP-1R, has been labeled with Ga-68 for imaging with positron emission tomography (PET). Preparation conditions may influence the quality and in vivo behavior of tracers. Starting from a published synthesis and quality controls (QCs) procedure, we have developed and validated a new rapid and simple UV-Radio-HPLC method to test the chemical and radiochemical purity of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4, to be used in the clinical routine. Methods: Ga-68 was obtained from a 68Ge/68Ga Generator (GalliaPharma®) and purified using a cationic-exchange cartridge on an automated synthesis module (Scintomics GRP®). NODAGA-exendin-4 contained in the reactor (10 µg) was reconstituted with HEPES and ascorbic acid. The reaction mixture was incubated at 100 °C. The product was purified through HLB cartridge, diluted, and sterilized. To validate the proposed UV-Radio-HPLC method, a stepwise approach was used, as defined in the guidance document released by the International Conference on Harmonization of Technical Requirements of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), adopted by the European Medicines Agency (CMP/ICH/381/95 2014). The assessed parameters are specificity, linearity, precision (repeatability), accuracy, and limit of quantification. Therefore, a range of concentrations of Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4, NODAGA-exendin-4 (5, 4, 3.125, 1.25, 1, and 0.75 μg/mL) and [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4 were analyzed. To validate the entire production process, three consecutive batches of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4 were tested. Results: Excellent linearity was found between 5-0.75 μg/mL for both the analytes (NODAGA-exendin-4 and 68Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4), with a correlation coefficient (R2) for calibration curves equal to 0.999, average coefficients of variation (CV%) < 2% (0.45% and 0.39%) and average per cent deviation value of bias from 100%, of 0.06% and 0.04%, respectively. The calibration curve for the determination of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4 was linear with a R2 of 0.993 and CV% < 2% (1.97%), in accordance to acceptance criteria. The intra-day and inter-day precision of our method was statistically confirmed using 10 μg of peptide. The mean radiochemical yield was 45 ± 2.4% in all the three validation batches of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4. The radiochemical purity of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4 was >95% (97.05%, 95.75% and 96.15%) in all the three batches. Conclusions: The developed UV-Radio-HPLC method to assess the radiochemical and chemical purity of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-exendin-4 is rapid, accurate and reproducible like its fully automated production. It allows the routine use of this PET tracer as a diagnostic tool for PET imaging of GLP-1R expression in vivo, ensuring patient safety.
