Cationic Organometallic Complexes of Scandium, Yttrium, and the Lanthanoids

Enhanced Control of Isoprene Polymerization with Trialkyl Rare Earth Metal Complexes through Neutral Donor Support

The development of catalysts for stereospecific polymerization of 1,3-dienes is an area of interest due to the robust nature of poly(1,3-diene)s' physical and mechanical properties, as well as the material's versatility in many applications. Dialkyl rare earth metal complexes supported by a diverse cast of ligand frameworks are selective for the polymerization of 1,3-dienes and are an exciting option for examination. However, development in this area has been hampered by the focus on complex catalyst systems that are costly to make. In this study, we synthesize a series of simple homoleptic trialkyl rare earth metal precatalysts and highlight their efficacy for isoprene polymerization using 1 or 2 equiv of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] activator. We investigated the addition of commercially available in situ donors, leading to the identification of triphenylphosphine as an ideal support to enhance the dispersity control and prevent loss of catalyst activity. We demonstrated how the activation and reaction conditions, including the order/time of reagent addition and donor electronics, had a major impact on the rate, control, and selectivity for the polymerization of 1,3-dienes. Further interrogation of the catalyst system signals the crucial role of triphenylphosphine in providing enhanced stability and control in this living catalyst system.

Guanidinate Yttrium Complexes Containing Bipyridyl and Bis(benzimidazolyl) Radicals

Ancillary ligand scaffolds that sufficiently stabilize a metal ion to allow its coordination to an open-shell ligand are scarce, yet their development is essential for next-generation spin-based materials with topical applications in quantum information science. To this end, a synthetic challenge must be met: devising molecules that enable the binding of a redox-active ligand through facile displacement and clean removal of a weakly coordinating anion. Here, we probe the accessibility of unprecedented radical-containing rare-earth guanidinate complexes by combining our recently discovered yttrium tetraphenylborate complex [{(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2}2Y][(μ-η6-Ph)(BPh3)] with the redox-active ligands 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 2,2'-bis(benzimidazole) (Bbim), respectively, under reductive conditions. Our endeavor resulted in the first evidence of guanidinate complexes that contain radicals, namely, a mononuclear bipyridyl radical complex, {(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2}2Y(bpy•) (1), and a dinuclear bis(benzimidazolyl) radical-bridged complex, [K(crypt-222)][{(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2}2Y]2(μ-Bbim•) (2'). The latter was achieved by an in situ reduction of [{(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2}2Y]2(μ-Bbim) (2), which was isolated from a salt metathesis reaction. 1 and 2 were characterized by X-ray crystallography and IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. Variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was applied to gain insight into the distribution of unpaired spin density on 1 and 2'. Density functional theory calculations were conducted on 1 and 2' to elucidate further their electronic structures. The redox activity of 1 and 2' was also probed by electrochemical methods.

Rare-Earth Metal Complexes Supported by A Tridentate Amidinate Ligand: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Comparison in Isoprene Polymerization

To systematically investigate the dependence of the initiating group and metal size on polymerization performance, a family of rare-earth metal bis(alkyl)/bis(benzyl)/bis(amide) complexes supported by a monoanionic tridentate amidinate ligand [(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC(Ph)N(C6H4-2-OMe]- (HL) were synthesized and well-characterized. Treatment of rare-earth metal tris(alkyl)/tris(benzyl)/tris(amide) complexes Y(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)3 or Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 or Ln[N(SiHMe2)2]3(THF)x (Ln = Sc, x = 1; Ln = Y, La, Sm, Lu, x = 2) with 1 equiv of HL gave the corresponding mono(amidinate) rare-earth metal bis(alkyl)/bis(benzyl)/bis(amide) complexes [(2,6-iPr2C6H4)NC(Ph)N(C6H4-2-OMe)]Y(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)2 (1), [(2,6-iPr2C6H4)NC(Ph)N(C6H4-2-OMe)]Y(CH2SiMe3)2(THF) (2), and [(2,6-iPr2C6H4)NC(Ph)N(C6H4-2-OMe)]Ln[N(SiHMe2)2]2(THF)n (Ln = Y, n = 1 (3); Ln = La, n = 1 (4); Ln = Sc, n = 0 (5); Ln = Lu, n = 0 (6); Ln = Sm, n = 0 (7)) in good isolated yields. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the presence of excess AlMe3 and on treatment with 1 equiv of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], these complexes could serve as precatalysts for cationic polymerization of isoprene, in which the dependence of the polymerization activity and regioselectivity on the initiating group and metal size was observed.

Trimethyltriazacyclohexane coordination chemistry of simple rare-earth metal salts

Reactions of 1,3,5-trimethyl-triazacyclohexane (Me₃tach) with common rare-earth metal iodide, chloride, and triflate salts were examined to determine the capacity of this inexpensive chelate to provide alternative precursors for THF-free reactions. The reaction of LaI₃(THF)₄ and CeI₃(THF)₄ with 1,3,5-trimethyl-triazacyclohexane in THF generated toluene soluble (Me₃tach)₂LnI₃, 1-Ln, in which the Ln center has a tri-capped trigonal prismatic geometry with two eclipsed Me₃tach rings. Reaction with NdI₃(THF)_3.5 forms the analogous 1-Nd, but a different structure with one outer sphere iodide, [(Me₃tach)₂NdI₂][I], 2-Nd, is also accessible and has a structure reminiscent of bent metallocenes. The reaction of LaCl₃ and Me₃tach forms the less soluble (Me₃tach)₂LaCl₃, which has a structure analogous to 1-Ln with eclipsed Me₃tach rings. The mono-ring yttrium complex, (Me₃tach)YCl₃(THF)₂, could be isolated from the reaction of YCl₃ with Me₃tach. Reactions of La(OTf)₃ with Me₃tach were sensitive to the presence of residual proton sources as exemplified by the isolation of {[(Me₃tach)La(μ-OH)(μ-OTf)]₂(μ-OTf)₂}₂, 5-La, and [HMe₃tach][(Me₃tach)₂La-(OTf)₄], 6-La. SmI₂ reacts with Me₃tach to produce the Sm(II) complex, (Me₃tach)₂SmI₂(THF), 7-Sm, but 2-Sm can also form in this reaction. Complexes of the larger 1,4,7-trimethyltriazacyclononane (Me₃tacn) ligand, namely (Me₃tacn)LaI₃(THF), (Me₃tacn)YCl₃, and (Me₃tacn)SmI₂(THF) were synthesized for comparison. Several examples of the protonated ligands with simple counteranions, [HMe₃tach][X] (X = Cl, Br, I) and [HMe₃tacn][OTf], were identified in the course of these studies.

Selective Cleavage of the Strong or Weak C-C Bonds in Biphenylene Enabled by Rare-Earth Metals

Selective cleavage of C-C bonds within arene rings is of great interest but remains elusive, especially for the molecules possessing the active and inert C-C bonds. Here, we report that the active and inert C-C bonds of biphenylene could be controllably cleaved by the reaction of biphenylene, potassium graphite, and rare-earth complexes with different metal centers. For scandium, the bond activation occurs at the C_aryl-C_aryl single bond, yielding 9-scandafluorene. For Lu, the reaction goes through ring contraction of the aromatic ring in biphenylene to provide benzopentalene dianionic lutetium. The origin of the selectivity and the reaction mechanism were illustrated by the isolation of intermediates and DFT calculations.

Divalent Lanthanide Tetraisobutylaluminates: Reactivity and Living Isoprene Polymerization

Lanthanide (Ln) tetraisobutylaluminates constitute key components in commercial 1,3-diene polymerization catalysts, and likewise are the homogeneous rare-earth-metal catalysts of prime industrial importance. Discrete divalent rare-earth-metal complexes [Ln(AliBu₄ )₂ ] (Ln=Sm, Eu, Yb) reported here display the first structurally characterized homoleptic metal tetraisobutylaluminates. Treatment of [Ln(AliBu₄ )₂ ] with C₂ Cl₆ gives access to Sm^II /Sm^III mixed-valence cluster [Sm₆ Cl₈ (AliBu₄ )₆ ] and the Yb^II cluster [Yb₄ Cl₄ (AliBu₄ )₄ ], respectively. Reaction with B(C₆ F₅ )₃ leads to hydride abstraction and formation of arene-coordinated hydroborates such as [Sm{HB(C₆ F₅ )₃ }₂ (toluene)₂ ]. Complexes [Ln(AliBu₄ )₂ ] engage in single-component isoprene polymerization, affording high cis-1,4 polyisoprenes with narrow molecular weight distributions. Binary [Yb(AliBu₄ )₂ ]/[HNPhMe₂ ][B(C₆ F₅ )₄ ] fabricates polyisoprene in a perfectly living manner. The catalytically active species are scrutinized by NMR spectroscopy.

Synthesis of Trimethyltriazacyclohexane (Me3tach) Sandwich Complexes of Uranium, Neptunium, and Plutonium Triiodides: (Me3tach)2AnI3

1,3,5-Trimethyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (Me₃tach) readily complexes uranium triiodide to form (Me₃tach)₂UI₃. The complex is soluble in THF and arenes and can function as a source of UI₃ to form organometallic U(III) complexes. When dissolved in pyridine (py), (Me₃tach)₂UI₃ forms (Me₃tach)UI₃(py)₂. A related complex with the larger 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (Me₃tacn) ligand, namely (Me₃tacn)UI₃(THF), was synthesized for comparison. Since X-ray quality crystals of (Me₃tach)₂UI₃ can be synthesized in high yield even with small-scale reactions, the system is ideal for extension to transuranium elements. Accordingly, the neptunium and plutonium complexes (Me₃tach)₂NpI₃ and (Me₃tach)₂PuI₃ were synthesized in an analogous manner from NpI₃(THF)₄ and PuI₃(THF)₄, respectively.

Expanding Bismuth Trihalide Coordination Chemistry with Trimethyltriazacyclohexane and Trimethyltriazacyclononane

1,3,5-Trimethyltriazacyclohexane, Me₃tach, readily adds to bismuth triiodide to form a variety of new coordination compounds depending on the stoichiometry, solvent, and crystallization conditions. X-ray crystallographic evidence has been obtained for both 2:1 and 1:1 Me₃tach:Bi complexes with formulas of [(Me₃tach)₂BiI₂][(Me₃tach)BiI₄], [(Me₃tach)₂BiI₂]₃[Bi₂I₉][I][HMe₃tach]·THF, and (Me₃tach)BiI₃(py)₂. The related chloride structure (Me₃tach)BiCl₃(py)₂ forms from BiCl₃. The structure of (Me₃tacn)BiI₃ with the larger chelate, 1,4,7-trimethyltriazacyclononane, Me₃tacn, was obtained for comparison, and the polymeric structure of BiI₃ in THF was defined as [BiI(THF)(μ-I)₂]_n.

π-Carbazolyl supported bis(alkyl) complexes of Sc, Y and La for α-olefin polymerization and hydrogenation

A series of new half-sandwich bis(alkyl) rare-earth metal complexes coordinated by a sterically demanding 1,3,6,8-tetra-tert-butyl-carbazol-9-yl ligand [tBu₄Carb]La(CH₂C₆H₅)₂(THF) (1-La), [tBu₄Carb]Ln(o-NMe₂C₆H₄CH₂)₂ (Ln = Sc (2-Sc), Y (2-Y), La (2-La), [tBu₄Carb]Ln(CH₂SiMe₃)₂(THF) (Ln = Sc (3-Sc), Y (3-Y)), were synthesized. 1-La, 2-La, and 2-Y were prepared by an alkane elimination protocol, while 2-Sc, 3-Sc, and 3-Y became accessible only when salt metathesis reactions of tBu₄CarbK with R₂Ln(THF)_n⁺[BPh₄]^- were employed. X-ray analysis revealed that in all complexes the carbazolyl ligand exhibits π-coordination with metal ions. 2-Sc and 3-Sc when activated with [Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄] demonstrate excellent activity in α-olefin (octene-1, nonene-1, decene-1 and 1,1-diphenyl-but-1-ene) polymerization. When H₂ was used as a chain transfer agent (1 bar, rt) in the presence of 3-Sc/[Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄] or 2-Y, 2-La olefin hydrogenation occurred with quantitative conversion.

Scandium Reduced Arene Complex: Protonation and Reaction with Azobenzene

The reactivity of the reduced anthracene complex of scandium [Li(thf)3 ][Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (anth)] (2-anth-Li) (Xy=3,5-Me2 C6 H3 ; anth=C14 H10 2- , thf=tetrahydrofuran) toward Brønsted acid [NEt3 H][BPh4 ] and azobenzene is reported. While a stepwise protonation of 2-anth-Li with two equivalents of [NEt3 H][BPh4 ] afforded the scandium cation [Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (thf)2 ][BPh4 ] (3), reduction of azobenzene gave a thermolabile, anionic scandium reduced azobenzene complex [Li(thf)][Sc{N(tBu)Xy}2 (η2 -PhNNPh)] (4), which slowly lost one of the anilide ligands to form the neutral scandium azobenzene complex dimer [Sc{N(tBu)Xy}(μ-η2 :η2 -Ph2 N2 )]2 (5). Exposure of 3 to CO2 produced the scandium carbamate complex [Sc{κ2 -O2 CN(tBu)(Xy)}2 ][BPh4 ] (6) as a result of CO2 insertion into the Sc-N bonds. In an attempt to prepare scandium hydrides, the reaction of 3 with the hydride sources LiAlH4 and Na[BEt3 H] led to the terminal aluminum hydride [AlH{N(tBu)Xy}2 (thf)] (7) and the scandium n-butoxide [Sc{N(tBu)(Xy)}2 (μ-OnBu)] (8) after Sc/Al transmetalation and nucleophilic ring-opening of THF, respectively. All reported compounds isolated in moderate to good yields were fully characterized.

A novel bis(pyrazolyl)methane compound as a potential agent against Gram-positive bacteria

This study was designed to propose alternative therapeutic compounds to fight against bacterial pathogens. Thus, a library of nitrogen-based compounds bis(triazolyl)methane (1T–7T) and bis(pyrazolyl)methane (1P–11P) was synthesised following previously reported methodologies and their antibacterial activity was tested using the collection strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Moreover, the novel compound 2P was fully characterized by IR, UV–Vis and NMR spectroscopy. To evaluate antibacterial activity, minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs), minimum biofilm inhibitory concentrations (MBICs), and minimum biofilm eradication concentrations (MBECs) assays were carried out at different concentrations (2–2000 µg/mL). The MTT assay and Resazurin viability assays were performed in both human liver carcinoma HepG2 and human colorectal adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cell lines at 48 h. Of all the synthesised compounds, 2P had an inhibitory effect on Gram-positive strains, especially against S. aureus. The MIC and MBC of 2P were 62.5 and 2000 µg/mL against S. aureus, and 250 and 2000 µg/mL against E. faecalis, respectively. However, these values were > 2000 µg/mL against E. coli and P. aeruginosa. In addition, the MBICs and MBECs of 2P against S. aureus were 125 and > 2000 µg/mL, respectively, whereas these values were > 2000 µg/mL against E. faecalis, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. On the other hand, concentrations up to 250 µg/mL of 2P were non-toxic doses for eukaryotic cell cultures. Thus, according to the obtained results, the 2P nitrogen-based compound showed a promising anti-Gram-positive effect (especially against S. aureus) both on planktonic state and biofilm, at non-toxic concentrations.

Renaissance of Homogeneous Cerium Catalysts with Unique Ce(IV/III) Couple: Redox-Mediated Organic Transformations Involving Homolysis of Ce(IV)-Ligand Covalent Bonds

Recent advances in the catalytic application of cerium complexes were achieved through controlling the Ce(IV/III) redox couple. Although Ce(IV) complexes have been extensively investigated as stoichiometric oxidants in organic synthesis on the basis of their highly positive redox potentials, these complexes can be used as catalysts, not only by introducing supporting ligands around the coordination sphere of cerium, but also by taking advantage of the photoresponsive properties of Ce(IV) and Ce(III) species. Cerium is highly abundant, comparable to that of some first-row transition metals such as copper, nickel, and zinc. Cerium complexes are new and promising homogeneous catalyst candidates for a variety of organic transformations under mild reaction conditions. They are typically used to activate dioxygen to oxidize organic compounds and applied for organic radical generation using the photoresponsive character of Ce(IV) carboxylates and alkoxides as well as electronic transition of Ce(III), in which homolysis of Ce(IV)-ligand covalent bonds is an important step for the overall catalytic cycle. In this Perspective, we first review the early discovery of Ce(OAc)₄-mediated oxidative transformations to emphasize the importance of Ce(IV)-OAc bond homolysis in various C-C bond-forming reactions and its relation to recent developments. We then focus on the fundamental importance of Ce(IV) reactivity involving thermal and photoassisted homolysis of the Ce(IV)-ligand covalent bond and the developments regarding Ce(IV/III) redox changes in catalytic reactions together with our recent findings on cerium-based catalysis.

Recent Advances in Radiometals for Combined Imaging and Therapy in Cancer

Nuclear medicine is defined as the use of radionuclides for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The imaging modalities positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) are based on γ-emissions of specific energies. The therapeutic technologies are based on β^- -particle-, α-particle-, and Auger electron emitters. In oncology, PET and SPECT are used to detect cancer lesions, to determine dosimetry, and to monitor therapy effectiveness. In contrast, radiotherapy is designed to irreparably damage tumor cells in order to eradicate or control the disease's progression. Radiometals are being explored for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. Strategies that combine both modalities (diagnostic and therapeutic), referred to as theranostics, are promising candidates for clinical applications. This review provides an overview of the basic concepts behind therapeutic and diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals and their significance in contemporary oncology. Select radiometals that significantly impact current and upcoming cancer treatment strategies are grouped as clinically suitable theranostics pairs. The most important physical and chemical properties are discussed. Standard production methods and current radionuclide availability are provided to indicate whether a cost-efficient use in a clinical routine is feasible. Recent preclinical and clinical developments and outline perspectives for the radiometals are highlighted in each section.

An Unsymmetric Imino-Phosphanamidinate Ligand and its Y(III) Complex: Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Hydroboration of Carbonyl Compounds

An imino-phosphanamide ligand, [NHI^iPr2Me2P(Ph)NH-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃] (LH), containing two different N-substituents was prepared by the direct reaction of the lithium salt of N-heterocyclic imine (NHI) with phenylchloro-2,6-diisopropylphenyl phosphanamine, PhP(Cl)NH-2,6-ⁱPr₂-C₆H₃. Reaction of LH with Y(N(SiMe₃)₂)₃ afforded the heteroleptic complex, [{L}Y(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂] (1), by elimination of HN(SiMe₃)₂. Compound 1 was characterized by multinuclear NMR and X-ray crystallography. In the complex, the Y(III) center was found to be tetracoordinate in a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The ligand, imino-phosphanamidinate, [L]^-, functions in a chelating manner, and its coordination to Y(III) results in a distorted 4-membered YPN₂ ring. As a proof of principle of its activity, 1 was used as a precatalyst for the hydroboration of various aldehydes and ketones using HBpin as the hydrogen source. The hydroboration reaction was rapid and clean even with low catalyst loadings (0.01-0.1 mol %). In addition, a very good functional group tolerance was observed in these reactions.

Yttrium and Lithium Keto-β-Diketiminate Complexes [{2,6-Me2C6H3N=C(Me)}2CС(tert-Bu)=O]2Y(μ2-Cl)2Li(THF)2 and {[{2,6-Me2C6H3N=C(Me)}2CС(tert-Bu)=O]Li(THF)}n. Synthesis, Molecular Structures, and Catalytic Activity in ε-Caprolactone Polymerization

Abstract

The reaction of lithium β-diketiminate [{2,6-Me2C6H3N=CMe}2CH]Li with benzophenone in toluene at 25°C affords the coordination complex [{2,6-Me2C6H3N=CMe}2CH]Li(Ph2C=O) (I). New keto-β-diketimine {2,6-Me2C6H3N=C(Me)}2CHC(tert-Bu)=O (II) is synthesized by the reaction of tert-Bu(C=O)Cl with [{2,6-Me2C6H3N=CMe}2CH]Li. The metallation of keto-β-diketimine II with n-butyllithium in THF at 0°C gives lithium keto-β-diketiminate {[{2,6-Me2C6H3N=C(Me)}2CС(tert-Bu)=O]Li(THF)}n (III). The exchange reaction of YCl3 with compound III (molar ratio 1 : 2, THF) affords the yttrium bis(keto-diketiminate) complex [{2,6-Me2C6H3N=C(Me)}2CС(tert-Bu)=O]2Y(μ2-Cl)2L-(THF)2 (IV). The molecular structures of complexes I, III, and IV are determined by X-ray diffraction analysis (CIF files CCDC nos. 2001131 (I), 2001132 (III), and 2001133 (IV)). Complex IV in the crystalline state exists as an ate complex with one LiCl molecule. Complexes I, III, and IV are catalysts of ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone in toluene at 25°С.

Scandium calix[n]arenes (n = 4, 6, 8): structural, cytotoxicity and ring opening polymerization studies

Interaction of [Sc(OR)3] (R = iPr or triflate) with p-tert-butylcalix[n]arenes, where n = 4, 6, or 8, affords a number of intriguing structural motifs, which are relatively non-toxic (cytotoxicity evaluated against cell lines HCT116 and HT-29) and a number were capable of the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclohexene oxide.

La(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)3-catalyzed reduction of esters to alcohols with pinacolborane

La(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)3/HBpin is an efficient catalytic system for the hydroborative reduction of esters to alcohols under mild conditions.

Redox-controlled syndio-specific polymerization of styrene catalyzed by ferrocenyl functionalized half-sandwich scandium complexes

Redox-controlled polymerization is one of the new and efficient strategies to precisely construct the microstructures of polymeric materials, and thus has received increasing attention in the chemical community. Salt metathesis of ScCl₃ with 1 equiv. of Fc(1-C₉H₆)Li (where Fc = ferrocenyl group), followed by the addition of 2 equiv. of LiCH₂C₆H₄NMe₂-o in THF at room temperature gave the ferrocenyl functionalized half-sandwich scandium bis(o-dimethylaminobenzyl) complex [Fc(1-C₉H₆)]Sc(CH₂C₆H₄NMe₂-o)₂ (1) in 89% isolated yield. This complex was characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Treatment of 1 with 1 equiv. of [Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄] in THF generated the THF-coordinated cationic half-sandwich scandium mono(o-dimethylaminobenzyl) complex {[Fc(1-C₉H₆)]Sc(CH₂C₆H₄NMe₂-o)}{[B(C₆F₅)₄]} (2-THF₂). Switching in situ between the oxidized and reduced forms of active THF-free species (originally generated from 1/[Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄] in situ) resulted in the redox-controlled syndio-specific polymerization of styrene.

Homologous Structural, Chemical, and Biological Behavior of Sc and Lu Complexes of the Picaga Bifunctional Chelator: Toward Development of Matched Theranostic Pairs for Radiopharmaceutical Applications

The radioactive isotopes scandium-44/47 and lutetium-177 are gaining relevance for radioimaging and radiotherapy, resulting in a surge of studies on their coordination chemistry and subsequent applications. Although the trivalent ions of these elements are considered close homologues, dissimilar chemical behavior is observed when they are complexed by large ligand architectures due to discrepancies between Lu(III) and Sc(III) ions with respect to size, chemical hardness, and Lewis acidity. Here, we demonstrate that Lu and Sc complexes of 1,4-bis(methoxycarbonyl)-7-[(6-carboxypyridin-2-yl)methyl]-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (H₃mpatcn) and its corresponding bioconjugate picaga-DUPA can be employed to promote analogous structural features and, subsequently, biological properties for coordination complexes of these ions. The close homology was evidenced using potentiometric methods, computational modeling, variable temperature mass spectrometry, and pair distribution function analysis of X-ray scattering data. Radiochemical labeling, in vitro stability, and biodistribution studies with Sc-47 and Lu-177 indicate that the 7-coordinate ligand environment of the bifunctional picaga ligand is compatible with biological applications and the future investigation of β-emitting, picaga-chelated Sc and Lu isotopes for radiotherapy.

Recent Advances in Rare Earth Complexes Containing N-Heterocyclic Carbenes: Synthesis, Reactivity, and Applications in Polymerization

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are ubiquitous ancillary ligands employed in metal-catalyzed homogeneous reactions and polymerization reactions. Of significance is the use of NHCs as the supporting ligand in second- and third-generation Grubbs catalysts for their application in olefin metathesis and ring-opening metathesis polymerization. While the applications of transition metal catalysts ligated with NHCs in polymerization chemistry are well-documented, the use of analogous rare earth (Ln = Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) catalysts in this area remains under-developed, despite the unique role of rare earth elements in regio- and stereo-specific (co)polymerization reactions. By using hetero-atom-tethered chelating NHCs and, more recently, the employment of other structurally related NHCs, NHC-ligated Ln complexes have proven to be promising and fruitful catalysts for selective polymerization reactions. This review summarizes the recent developments in the coordination chemistry of Ln complexes containing NHCs and their catalytic performance in polymerization.

Highly selective redistribution of primary arylsilanes to secondary arylsilanes catalyzed by Ln(CH2C6H4NMe2-o)3@SBA-15

Half-sandwich rare-earth metal complexes bearing a C5Me4-C6H4-o-CH2NMe2 ligand: synthesis, characterization and catalytic properties for isoprene, 1-hexene and MMA polymerization

A new ortho-dimethylaminomethylphenyl-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl ligand C₅Me₄H-C₆H₄-o-CH₂NMe₂ (HL) and a series of rare-earth metal complexes bearing this ligand were synthesized. Of these complexes, two binuclear alkyl complexes [(C₅Me₄-C₆H₄-o-CH₂N(Me)CH₂-μ)Ln(CH₂SiMe₃)]₂ (Ln = Sc (1a) and Y (1b)) were obtained from the alkane elimination reaction of the free ligand with Ln(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(THF)₂, followed by an intramolecular C-H activation process of a NMe group in the ligand with a CH₂SiMe₃ group, two binuclear dichloro complexes (C₅Me₄-C₆H₄-o-CH₂NMe₂)₂Y₂Cl₄[LiCl(THF)₂] (2a) and [(C₅Me₄-C₆H₄-o-CH₂NMe₂)LuCl(μ-Cl)]₂ (2b) were synthesized by the reaction of anhydrous yttrium or lutetium trichloride with the lithium salt of the ligand LiL, and the binuclear bis(borohydrido) complexes [(C₅Me₄-C₆H₄-o-CH₂NMe₂)Ln(μ-BH₄)BH₄]₂ (Ln = Sm (3a) and Nd (3b)) were synthesized by the reaction of Ln(BH₄)₃(THF)₃ (Ln = Sm and Nd) with the lithium salt of the ligand. The molecular structures of all complexes 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a and 3b were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Upon activation with AlR₃/Ph₃CB(C₆F₅)₄, MAO or MMAO, the binuclear alkyl complexes 1a and 1b show good catalytic activity for isoprene cis-1,4 enriched regioselective polymerization and moderate catalytic activity for 1-hexene polymerization. Complexes 3a and 3b were studied as catalysts for methyl methacrylate polymerization reaction under different conditions and were found to show moderate to high catalytic activity.
