Unusual redox stability of pentavalent uranium with hetero-bifunctional phosphonocarboxylate: insight into aqueous speciation

The +5 state is an unusual oxidation state of uranium due to its instability in the aqueous phase. As a result, gaining information about its aqueous speciation is extremely difficult. The present work is an attempt in that direction and it provides insight into the existence of a new pentavalent species in the presence of hetero-bifunctional phosphonocarboxylate (PC) chelators, other than the carbonate ion, in the aqueous medium. The aqueous chemistry of pentavalent uranium species with three environmentally relevant PCs was probed using electrochemical and DFT methods to understand the redox energy and kinetics of conversion of the U(VI)/U(V) couple, stability, structure, stoichiometry, binding modes, etc. Interestingly, pentavalent uranium complexes with PCs are quite persistent over a wide range of pH starting from acidic to alkaline conditions. The PC chelators block the cation-cation interaction (CCI) of U(V) through strong hetero-bidentate chelation and intermolecular hydrogen bonding (IMHB) interactions which stabilize the pentavalent metal ion against disproportionation. For uranyl species in the presence of PCs, acting as chelators, CV plots were obtained at varying pH values from 2 to 8. The obtained results indicate an irreversible single redox peak involving U(VI) to U(V) conversion and association of a coupled chemical reaction with the electron transfer step. ESI-MS studies were performed to understand the speciation effect on the U(VI)/U(V) redox couple with varying pH. Speciation modelling of U(V) with the PC ligands was carried out, which indicated that the U(V) is redox stable in nearly 47% of the pH region in the presence of the PCs as compared to the carboxylate-based chelators. The free energy and reduction potential of the U(V) complexes and the reduction free energy and disproportionation free energy for the U(VI)/U(V) couple were determined by DFT computations in the presence of the PCs. In situ spectroelectrochemical spectra were recorded to provide evidence for the existence of U(V) species with PCs in the aqueous medium and to acquire its absorption spectra. The present study is highly significant for understanding the coordination chemistry of pentavalent uranium species, accurate modelling of uranium, and isolation of U(V).

Thermodynamics of the Eu(III)-Mg-SO4-H2O and Eu(III)-Na-SO4-H2O systems. Part II: spectroscopy experiments, complexation and Pitzer/SIT models

A time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) study was carried out to investigate the Eu(III)-SO4 complexation at room temperature over a wide range of Na2SO4 concentrations (0-2 mol kg-1). Spectroscopic observations confirm the step-wise formation of the aqueous complexes Eu(SO4)+, Eu(SO4)2- and Eu(SO4)33- over the investigated Na2SO4 concentrations. Combining TRLFS data obtained in this study and solubility data reported in Part I of this work for the Eu2(SO4)3-Na2SO4-H2O and Eu2(SO4)3-MgSO4-H2O systems, thermodynamic and activity models were derived based on the SIT and Pitzer formalisms. A combination of the geochemical calculation codes PhreeqC (SIT), PhreeSCALE (Pitzer) and the parameter estimation code PEST was used to determine the solubility products of Eu2(SO4)3·8H2O(cr) and Na2Eu2(SO4)4·2H2O(cr), stability constants of the Eu(III)-SO4 complexes (β0i), and the specific binary and ternary interaction parameters (εij, β(0)ij, β(1)ij, Cϕij, θik, Ψijk) for both activity models. The thermodynamic constants determined in this work are discussed with reference to values available in the literature.

Initial Characterization and Optimization of the Liquid Sampling-Atmospheric Pressure Glow Discharge Ionization Source Coupled to an Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer for the Determination of Plutonium

Plutonium measurements are essential to the nuclear forensics and safeguards community. The liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) microplasma ionization source coupled with an Orbitrap mass spectrometer is a proven platform for uranium isotope ratio determinations. This work expands the LS-APGD-Orbitrap platform capabilities by reporting the first-ever analysis of plutonium with the LS-APGD and the first-ever measurement of elemental plutonium with an Orbitrap mass spectrometer. This coupling has the potential to dramatically reduce the complex sample manipulations required for traditional analysis techniques employed for actinide isotope ratio determinations. As a first step toward the goal of simultaneous uranium and plutonium isotope ratio determinations, the initial characterization and optimization of the platform for the detection of plutonium are reported. Collision-induced dissociation modality settings were optimized to reduce water-related and other molecular clusters containing plutonium, maximizing 242Pu16O2+ responses. A design of experiments study was conducted to optimize the discharge conditions of the dual-electrode LS-APGD toward the responsivity of 242Pu16O2+. The measurement sensitivity was determined from a Pu response curve, yielding a limit of detection of 10 fg (absolute) of total analyte when data was collected and processed with a Spectroswiss FTMS Booster X2 data acquisition system. Additionally, plutonium and uranium were measured in a simultaneous acquisition, and each analyte remained unaffected by the other. It is believed that the LS-APGD-Orbitrap platform could be a valuable addition to the nuclear forensics' toolbox and, indeed, other scientific disciplines and regulatory communities in which rapid, high-resolution plutonium determinations are paramount.

Uranium hydroxide/oxide deposits on uranyl reduction

We clarified the chemical reaction of deposits following the reduction of uranyl ions (U^VIO₂²⁺) from the results of electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, impedance spectra, and X-ray absorption fine structure measurements. We propose the following deposition mechanism: (1) U^IV is formed by the disproportionation of U^V, (2) U^IV forms U^IV hydroxide deposits, and (3) finally, the hydroxide deposits change to U^IV oxide, which generally have a larger electrical resistance than the hydroxide form.

Aquatic Chemistry of Pentavalent Plutonium: Determination of the First Hydrolysis Constant

Up to now, no recommendations have been made by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD-NEA) for the first two hydrolysis constants of pentavalent plutonium. We have determined them, as well as those of Np(V), by means of capillary electrophoresis coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICP-MS) in 0.1 M NaCl at 25 °C. The hydrolysis constants of Pu(V) were compared to those of Np(V), for which consensual values have been proposed by the OECD-NEA. The first hydrolysis stability constant for Pu(V) extrapolated at zero ionic strength (log⁡β10*=-(11.50±0.12)) is, as expected, close to that of Np(V) (log⁡β10*=-(11.36±0.13)). We have obtained an excellent agreement with the OECD-NEA value for Np(V) [log⁡β10*=-(11.3±0.7)]. Based on eight independent values including our own, we propose a new, robust value for the first hydrolysis of Np(V): log⁡β10*=-(11.22±0.20). The determination of the second hydrolysis constant for Np(V) by CE-ICP-MS [⁢log⁡β20*=-(24.40±0.33)] deviates from the value adopted by the OECD-NEA [⁢log⁡β20*=-(23.6±0.5)]. This discrepancy might be explained by the association of a sodium counter cation with the species [NpO2(OH)2]-. A stability constant is proposed at zero ionic strength and 25 °C for this association: log⁡KNa[NpO2(OH)2]0=(1.6±0.5). As a result, it is considered that the second hydrolysis constant for Pu(V), [⁢log⁡β20*=-(24.24±0.26)], is also a mixed constant, taking into account both the hydrolysis and the association with a sodium cation.

Novel biocompatible and sensitive visual sensor based on aggregation-induced emission for on-site detection of radioactive uranium in water and live cell imaging

In consideration of the severe hazards of radioactive uranium pollution, the rapid assessment of uranium in field and in vivo are urgently needed. In this work a novel biocompatible and sensitive visual fluorescent sensor based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was designed for onsite detection of UO₂²⁺ in complex environmental samples, including wastewater from Uranium Plant, river water and living cell. The AIE-active sensor (named as TPA-SP) was prepared with a "bottom-up" strategy by introducing a trianiline group (TPA) with a single-bond rotatable helix structure into the salicylaldehyde Schiff-base molecule. The photophysical properties, cytotoxicity test, recognition mechanism and the analytical performance for the detection of UO₂²⁺ in actual water samples and cell imaging were systematically investigated. TPA-SP exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity toward UO₂²⁺ as well as outstanding anti-interference ability against large equivalent of different ions in a wide effective pH range. A good linear relationship in the UO₂²⁺ concentration range of 0.05-1 μM was obtained with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 39.4 nM (9.38 ppb) for uranium detection. The prepared visual sensor showed great potential for fast risk assessment of uranium pollution in environmental systems. In addition, our results also indicated that the TPA-SP exhibited very low cytotoxicity in cells and demonstrated great potential for uranium detection in vivo.

Ion sieving in graphene oxide membrane enables efficient actinides/lanthanides separation

Separation of actinides from lanthanides is of great importance for the safe management of nuclear waste and sustainable development of nuclear energy, but it represents a huge challenge due to the chemical complexity of these f-elements. Herein, we report an efficient separation strategy based on ion sieving in graphene oxide membrane. In the presence of a strong oxidizing reagent, the actinides (U, Np, Pu, Am) in a nitric acid solution exist in the high valent and linear dioxo form of actinyl ions while the lanthanides (Ce, Nd, Eu, Gd, etc.) remain as trivalent/tetravalent spheric ions. A task-specific graphene oxide membrane with an interlayer nanochannel spacing between the sizes of hydrated actinyl ions and lanthanides ions is tailored and used as an ionic cut-off filter, which blocks the larger and linear actinyl ions but allows the smaller and spheric lanthanides ions to penetrate through, affording lanthanides/actinides separation factors up to ~400. This work realizes the group separation of actinides from lanthanides under highly acidic conditions by a simple ion sieving strategy and highlights the great potential of utilizing graphene oxide membrane for nuclear waste treatment.

Single-Hydroxide Bridged Dimers of U and Np Actinyls: A Density Functional Study on Their Existence and Structure in Aqueous Solution

With quantum chemical calculations at the density functional theory level, we examined the structure and the stability of diactinyl monohydroxo complexes [(AnO₂)₂(OH)]^3+/+ in aqueous solution for An = U(VI), Np(VI), and Np(V). In particular, this study contributes to understanding the hydrolysis of Np(VI) and Np(V), which is less well characterized than for U(VI). [(UO₂)₂(OH)]³⁺ is a known hydrolysis complex of U(VI) at low pH. Although not yet found in experiments, [(NpO₂)₂(OH)]³⁺ is suggested to exist due to the similarity between Np(VI) and U(VI) complexes, while [(NpO₂)₂(OH)]⁺ is a hypothetical species thus far. Our calculations suggest that the An(VI) complexes favor the parallel orientation of actinyls, whereas for the Np(V) complex a perpendicular arrangement is stabilized by hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and the actinyl oxygen atoms. The Np(VI) complex [(NpO₂)₂(OH)]³⁺ features a structure and stability similar to its U(VI) analogue. From calculated formation constants for An(VI) diactinyl monohydroxo complexes, we find qualitative agreement with the experiment for U(VI). Both An(VI) complexes are only slightly less stable than the separate mononuclear constituents, the actinyl aqua and the monohydroxo complex. For the Np(V) species [(NpO₂)₂(OH)]⁺, we calculated a considerably lower complexation constant than for its An(VI) analogues, but it is more stable against decay into its constituents. Thus, this complex may exist at about the pH where Np(V) hydrolysis starts at not too low Np(V) concentrations.

Structural Approach to Understanding the Formation of Amorphous Metal Hydroxides

This study investigates the formation of amorphous tetravalent metal hydroxides, M(OH)₄, based on the structural analysis by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) and on the electrical potential charge near the surface of M(OH)₄ particles. The amorphous zirconium hydroxide solid phases that aged in NaCl and CaCl₂ solutions at 25 °C exhibited a hierarchical structure consisting of primary particles of a few nanometers in size and their aggregates more than 100 nm in size. The SWAXS profiles suggested that the size of the primary particles depends on the ionic strength and electrolytes in the sample solutions. The smaller size of the primary particles observed in solutions with higher ionic strength can be explained by the thinner electrical double layer. Additionally, we focused on the ζ potentials of M(OH)₄ suspensions in NaCl, NaNO₃, and CaCl₂ solutions. With the aid of reference systems of metal oxides, MO₂, it was found that the ζ potentials were well interpreted by a traditional surface ionization and complexation model, and the size distributions of large aggregates were explained by the classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory with the ζ potential values. The present study suggests the formation mechanism of amorphous metal hydroxides through a combination of structural analysis and investigation of electrical potentials.

Synthesis and multi-scale properties of PuO2 nanoparticles: recent advances and open questions

Due to the increased attention given to actinide nanomaterials, the question of their structure-property relationship is on the spotlight of recent publications. Plutonium oxide (PuO₂) particularly plays a central role in nuclear energetics and a comprehensive knowledge about its properties when nanosizing is of paramount interest to understand its behaviour in environmental migration schemes but also for the development of advanced nuclear energy systems underway. The element plutonium further stimulates the curiosity of scientists due to the unique physical and chemical properties it exhibits around the periodic table. PuO₂ crystallizes in the fluorite structure of the face-centered cubic system for which the properties can be significantly affected when shrinking. Identifying the formation mechanism of PuO₂ nanoparticles, their related atomic, electronic and crystalline structures, and their reactivity in addition to their nanoscale properties, appears to be a fascinating and challenging ongoing topic, whose recent advances are discussed in this review.

Quantifying the Influence of Covalent Metal-Ligand Bonding on Differing Reactivity of Trivalent Uranium and Lanthanide Complexes

Qualitative differences in the reactivity of trivalent lanthanide and actinide complexes have long been attributed to differences in covalent metal-ligand bonding, but there are few examples where thermodynamic aspects of this relationship have been quantified, especially with U³⁺ and in the absence of competing variables. Here we report a series of dimeric phosphinodiboranate complexes with trivalent f-metals that show how shorter-than-expected U-B distances indicative of increased covalency give rise to measurable differences in solution deoligomerization reactivity when compared to isostructural complexes with similarly sized lanthanides. These results, which are in excellent agreement with supporting DFT and QTAIM calculations, afford rare experimental evidence concerning the measured effect of variations in metal-ligand covalency on the reactivity of trivalent uranium and lanthanide complexes.

The mechanism of Fe induced bond stability of uranyl(v)

The stabilization of uranyl(v) (UO₂ ^{1 +} ) by Fe(ii) in natural systems remains an open question in uranium chemistry. Stabilization of U^VO₂ ¹⁺ by Fe(ii) against disproportionation was also demonstrated in molecular complexes. However, the relation between the Fe(ii) induced stability and the change of the bonding properties have not been elucidated up to date. We demonstrate that U(v) - oaxial bond covalency decreases upon binding to Fe(ii) inducing redirection of electron density from the U(v) - oaxial bond towards the U(v) - equatorial bonds thereby increasing bond covalency. Our results indicate that such increased covalent interaction of U(v) with the equatorial ligands resulting from iron binding lead to higher stability of uranyl(v). For the first time a combination of U M_4,5 high energy resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure (HR-XANES) and valence band resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (VB-RIXS) and ab initio multireference CASSCF and DFT based computations were applied to establish the electronic structure of iron-bound uranyl(v).

Chemical and Redox Speciation of Uranyl with Three Environmentally Relevant Bifunctional Chelates: Multi-Technique Approach Combined with Theoretical Estimations

Carbon and phosphorous are two primary elements common to the bio-geosphere and are omnipresent in both biotic and abiotic arenas. Phosphonate and carboxylate are considered as building blocks of glyphosate and humic substances and constituents of the cellular wall of bacteria and are the driving functionalities for most of the chemical interactions involving these two elements. Phosphonocarboxylates, a combination of both the functionalities in one moiety, are ideal models to dig deep into for understanding the chemical interactions of the two functional groups with metal ions. Phosphorous and carbon majorly exist as inorganic/organic phosphate and carboxylate, respectively, in the bio-geosphere. Aquatic contamination is a major concern for uranium, and the presence of complexing agents would alter the uranium concentrations in aquifers. Determination of solution thermodynamic parameters, speciation plots, redox patterns, E_h-pH diagrams, coordination structures, and molecular-level understanding by density functional theory calculations was carried out to interpret the uranyl (UO₂²⁺) interaction with three environmentally relevant phosphonocarboxylates, namely, phosphono-formic acid (PFA), phosphono-acetic acid (PAA), and phosphono-propanoic acid (PPA). UO₂²⁺ forms 1:1 complexes with the three phosphonocarboxylates in the monoprotonated form, having nearly the same stability, and the complexes [UO₂(PFAH)], [UO₂(PAAH)], and [UO₂(PPAH)] involve chelate formation of five, six, and seven membered rings, respectively, through the participation of an oxygen each from the carboxylate and phosphonate, strengthened by an intra-molecular hydrogen bonding through the proton of the phosphonate moiety with uranyl oxygen. The complex formations are favored both enthalpically and entropically, with the latter being more contributive to the overall free energy of formation. The redox speciation showed an aqueous soluble complex formation over a wide pH range of 1-8. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and extended X-ray absorption fine structure established the coordination modes, which are further corroborated by density functional calculations. The knowledge gained from the present studies provide potential inputs in framing the cleanup, sequestering, microbial, and bio-remediation strategies for uranyl from aquatic environments.

Determination of 241Am in Environmental Samples: A Review

The determination of ²⁴¹Am in the environment is of importance in monitoring its release and assessing its environmental impact and radiological risk. This paper aims to give an overview about the recent developments and the state-of-art analytical methods for ²⁴¹Am determination in environmental samples. Thorough discussions are given in this paper covering a wide range of aspects, including sample pre-treatment and pre-concentration methods, chemical separation techniques, source preparation, radiometric and mass spectrometric measurement techniques, speciation analyses, and tracer applications. The paper focuses on some hyphenated separation methods based on different chromatographic resins, which have been developed to achieve high analytical efficiency and sample throughput for the determination of ²⁴¹Am. The performances of different radiometric and mass spectrometric measurement techniques for ²⁴¹Am are evaluated and compared. Tracer applications of ²⁴¹Am in the environment, including speciation analyses of ²⁴¹Am, and applications in nuclear forensics are also discussed.

A Coupled EXAFS-Molecular Dynamics Study on PuO2+ and NpO2+ Hydration: The Importance of Electron Correlation in Force-Field Building

The physicochemical properties of the monovalent actinyl cations, PuO₂⁺ and NpO₂⁺, in water have been studied by means of classical molecular dynamic simulations. A specific set of cation-water intermolecular potentials based on ab initio potential energy surfaces has been built on the basis of the hydrated ion concept. The TIP4P water model was adopted. Given the paramagnetic character of these actinyls, the cation-water interaction energies were computed from highly correlated wave functions using the NEVPT2 method. It is shown that the multideterminantal character of the wave function has a relevant effect on the main distances of the hydrated molecular cations. Several structural, dynamical, and energetic properties of the aqueous solutions have been obtained and analyzed. Structural RDF analysis gives An-O_yl distances of 1.82 and 1.84 Å and An-O(water) distances of 2.51 and 2.53 Å for PuO₂⁺ and NpO₂⁺ in water, respectively. Experimental EXAFS spectra from dilute aqueous solutions of PuO₂⁺ and NpO₂⁺ are revisited and analyzed, assuming tetra- and pentahydration of the actinyl cations. Simulated EXAFS spectra have been computed from the snapshots of the MD simulations. Good agreement with the experimental information available is found. The global analysis leads us to conclude that both PuO₂⁺ and NpO₂⁺ cations in water are stable pentahydrated aqua ions.

Elucidation of the sorbent role in sorption thermodynamics of uranium(VI) on goethite

The sorption process of radionuclides, often conducted at ambient temperature, shows significant sensitivity to the surrounding temperature. Prediction of fate and transport in the environment, therefore, requires accurate thermodynamic data of their species defining sorption-desorption onto solid surfaces. Herein, we examined the thermodynamics of uranium(VI), U(VI), sorption onto goethite with particular emphasis on directly calculating the enthalpy of U(VI) surface species formed under slightly acidic pH conditions. To achieve this aim, a sorption study of U(VI) was carried out on goethite in the pH range 3-10 and modelled using a 2-pK single-site diffuse layer surface complexation model. A binuclear bidentate species of U(VI), (FeO)₂UO₂, reproduces the sorption profile at pH 3-5 while the sorption was under-estimated in the pH >5 region. Precipitation of schoeptite at pH 5-8 was attributed to the underestimation of the predicted sorption behaviour. The species complexation constant was employed in the analysis of heat consumed, measured using an isothermal titration calorimeter, in the titration of the goethite suspension with U(VI) at pH 4.5 ± 0.1. Enthalpy for the U(VI) species was found to be 41 ± 7 kJ mol^-1, suggesting that sorption is an entropically driven process. Comparing thermodynamic data with that of similar U(VI)-iron oxide systems, binding energy of U(VI) surface species, surface hydration and hydrogen binding are suggested as main factors in the sorbent role towards the thermodynamics of the sorption process.

Radionuclide geochemistry evolution in the Long-term In-situ Test (LIT) at Grimsel Test Site (Switzerland)

The Long-term In-situ Test (LIT) of the Colloid Formation and Migration project (CFM) at the Grimsel Test Site, investigates the generation of bentonite colloids and, hence, radionuclide mobilization within a well-defined and controlled shear zone in a crystalline rock. In this context, the determination of radionuclide aqueous speciation is essential to understand whether radionuclides are easily transported or immobilized by precipitation or uptake processes in the bentonite barrier included in a repository concept for nuclear waste, and mimic in the LIT experiment. The objective of this work is to determine the aqueous speciation of seven radionuclides (i.e. ⁷⁵Se(VI), ⁹⁹Tc(VII),²³³U(VI), ²³⁷Np(V), ²⁴¹Am(III), Th(IV) and ²⁴²Pu(IV)) by thermodynamic calculations in different water compositions representing the geochemical evolution through the LIT. A comparison of the results obtained from two different modelling groups allows the identification of the geochemical key parameters affecting radionuclide mobility in this context and the corresponding numerical and conceptual uncertainties. Particularly, silicate complexes of trivalent actinides and uranium(VI) carbonato complexes (i.e. Ca_nUO₂(CO₃)₃^(4-2n) n = 1 or 2) seem to be crucial in these environments, even at reducing conditions. Conceptual uncertainties like inclusion/exclusion of tetravalent actinide-bearing colloids formation and polyselenides have clearly been identified.

Coordination-Adaptive Polydentate Pseudorotaxane Ligand for Capturing Multiple Uranyl Species

The propensity of uranyl for hydrolysis in aqueous environments prevents precise control of uranyl species in the scenarios of on-demand separation and tailored synthesis. Herein, using cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) as the macrocyclic molecule and 4,4'-bipyridine-N,N'-dioxide (DPO) as the string molecule, we propose a new kind of multidentate pseudorotaxane ligand, DPO@CB[7] for capturing uranyl species at different pH's. With the aprotic nature of DPO for metal coordination, the coordination ability of the DPO@CB[7] ligand is less affected by pH and can work in a wide range of pH's. Furthermore, by adaptive uranyl coordination, this aprotic pseudorotaxane ligand achieves effective recognition for different uranyl species ranging from monomeric to tetrameric originating from hydrolysis at varying pH's, and four novel uranyl-rotaxane compounds (URC1-4) are successfully obtained. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the DPO@CB[7] ligand coordinates with uranyl centers from monomeric to tetrameric in four different modes, as a result of structural flexibility of the DPO@CB[7] pseudorotaxane ligand. A detailed discussion for conformation flexibility of the DPO@CB[7] ligand has been conducted on the position changes of the DPO ligand trapped in the CB[7], which thus reveals good adaptivity of DPO@CB[7] that is noncovalently bonded as a supramolecular motif. In addition, characterization of the physicochemical properties of URC1 and URC2 with high phase purity, including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and luminescence properties, are also provided. This work provides a good case of an adaptive pseudorotaxane ligand for the recognition and capture of different uranyl species and will bring valuable hints to the design of multifunctional supramolecular ligands for actinide separation in the future.

SOLUBILITY OF Ca(II), Ni(II), Nd(III) AND Pu(IV) IN THE PRESENCE OF PROXY LIGANDS FOR THE DEGRADATION OF POLYACRYLONITRILE IN CEMENTITIOUS SYSTEMS

Size and structure of hexanuclear plutonium oxo-hydroxo clusters in aqueous solution from synchrotron analysis

The size and shape of a water-soluble hexanuclear plutonium cluster were probed by combining synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). A specific setup coupling both techniques and dedicated to radioactive samples on the MARS beamline endstation at Synchrotron SOLEIL is described. The plutonium hexanuclear cores are well stabilized by the 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid ligands and this allows a good evaluation of the setup to probe the very small plutonium core. The results show that, in spite of the constrained conditions required to avoid any risk of sample dispersion, the flux and the sample environment are optimized to obtain a very good signal-to-noise ratio, allowing the detection of small plutonium aggregates in an aqueous phase. The structure of the well defined hexanuclear cluster has been confirmed by EXAFS measurements in solution and correlated with SAXS data processing and modelling. An iterative comparison of classical fit models (Guinier or sphere form factor) with the experimental results allowed a better interpretation of the SAXS signal that will be relevant for future work under environmentally relevant conditions.

Relativistic Multiconfigurational Ab Initio Calculation of Uranyl 3d4f Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We applied relativistic multiconfigurational all-electron ab initio calculations including the spin-orbit interaction to calculate the 3d4f resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) map (3d3/2 → 5f5/2 U M4 absorption edge and 4f5/2 → 3d3/2 U Mβ emission) of uranyl (UO22+). The calculated data are in excellent agreement with experimental results and allow a detailed understanding of the observed features and an unambiguous assignment of all involved intermediate and final states. The energies corresponding to the maxima of the resonant emission and the non-resonant (normal) emission were determined with high accuracy, and the corresponding X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra extracted at these two positions were simulated and agree well with the measured data. With the high quality of our theoretical data, we show that the cause of the splitting of the three main peaks in emission is due to the fine structure splitting of the 4f orbitals induced through the trans di-oxo bonds in uranyl and that we are able to obtain direct information about the energy differences between the 5f and 4f orbitals: Δ5f δ/ϕ - 4f δ/ϕ, Δ5f π* - 4f π, and Δ5f σ* - 4f σ from the 3d4f RIXS map. RIXS maps contain a wealth of information, and ab initio calculations facilitate an understanding of their complex structure in a clear and transparent way. With these calculations, we show that the multiconfigurational protocol, which is nowadays applied as a standard tool to study the X-ray spectra of transition metal complexes, can be extended to the calculation of RIXS maps of systems containing actinides.

Complexation and redox chemistry of neptunium, plutonium and americium with a hydroxylaminato ligand

There is significant interest in ligands that can stabilize actinide ions in oxidation states that can be exploited to chemically differentiate 5f and 4f elements. Applications range from developing large-scale actinide separation strategies for nuclear industry processing to carrying out analytical studies that support environmental monitoring and remediation efforts. Here, we report syntheses and characterization of Np(iv), Pu(iv) and Am(iii) complexes with N-tert-butyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl)hydroxylaminato, [2-(^tBuNO)py]⁻(interchangeable hereafter with [(^tBuNO)py]⁻), a ligand which was previously found to impart remarkable stability to cerium in the +4 oxidation state. An[(^tBuNO)py]₄ (An = Pu, 1; Np, 2) have been synthesized, characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, ¹H NMR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry, along with computational modeling and analysis. In the case of Pu, oxidation of Pu(iii) to Pu(iv) was observed upon complexation with the [(^tBuNO)py]⁻ ligand. The Pu complex 1 and Np complex 2 were also isolated directly from Pu(iv) and Np(iv) precursors. Electrochemical measurements indicate that a Pu(iii) species can be accessed upon one-electron reduction of 1 with a large negative reduction potential (E_1/2 = −2.26 V vs. Fc^+/0). Applying oxidation potentials to 1 and 2 resulted in ligand-centered electron transfer reactions, which is different from the previously reported redox chemistry of U^IV[(^tBuNO)py]₄ that revealed a stable U(v) product. Treatment of an anhydrous Am(iii) precursor with the [(^tBuNO)py]⁻ ligand did not result in oxidation to Am(iv). Instead, the dimeric complex [Am^III(μ₂-(^tBuNO)py)((^tBuNO)py)₂]₂ (3) was isolated. Complex 3 is a rare example of a structurally characterized non-aqueous Am-containing molecular complex prepared using inert atmosphere techniques. Predicted redox potentials from density functional theory calculations show a trivalent accessibility trend of U(iii) < Np(iii) < Pu(iii) and that the higher oxidation states of actinides (i.e., +5 for Np and Pu and +4 for Am) are not stabilized by [2-(^tBuNO)py]⁻, in good agreement with experimental observations.

The coordination modes and electronic properties of a strongly coordinating hydroxylaminato ligand with Np, Pu and Am were investigated.Complexes were characterized by a range of experimental and computational techniques.

Impact of sulfate on the solubility of Tc(IV) in acidic to hyperalkaline aqueous reducing systems

The solubility of 99Tc(IV) was investigated from undersaturation conditions in NaCl–Na2SO4 (0.3 M ≤ I ≤ 5.0 M), MgCl2–MgSO4 (I = 13.5 M) and CaCl2–CaSO4 (I = 13.5 M) systems with 0.001 M ≤ [SO4 2−]tot ≤ 1.0 M and 1 ≤ pH m  ≤ 12 (with pH m  = −log[H+], in molal units). Reducing conditions were set by either Sn(II) or Fe(0). Special efforts were dedicated to accurately characterize the correction factors A m required for the determination of pH m from the experimentally measured pH values in the mixed salt systems investigated, with pH m  = pHexp + A m . The combination of (pe + pH m ) measurements with Pourbaix diagrams of Tc suggests that technetium is present in its +IV redox state. This hypothesis is confirmed by XANES, which unambiguously shows the predominance of Tc(IV) both in the aqueous and solid phases of selected solubility samples. XRD and SEM–EDS support the amorphous character of the solid phase controlling the solubility of Tc(IV). EXAFS data confirm the predominance of TcO2(am, hyd) at pH m  > 1.5, whereas the formation of a Tc(IV)–O–Cl solid phase is hinted at lower pHm values in concentrated NaCl–Na2SO4 systems with ≈5 M NaCl. Solubility data collected in sulfate-containing systems are generally in good agreement with previous solubility studies conducted in sulfate-free NaCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2 solutions of analogous ionic strength. Although the complexation of Tc(IV) with sulfate cannot be completely ruled out, these results strongly support that, if occurring, complexation must be weak and has no significant impact on the solubility of Tc(IV) in dilute up to highly saline media. Solubility upper-limits determined in this work can be used for source term estimations including the effect of sulfate in a variety of geochemical conditions relevant in the context of nuclear waste disposal.

Evidence for ligand- and solvent-induced disproportionation of uranium(IV)

Disproportionation, where a chemical element converts its oxidation state to two different ones, one higher and one lower, underpins the fundamental chemistry of metal ions. The overwhelming majority of uranium disproportionations involve uranium(III) and (V), with a singular example of uranium(IV) to uranium(V/III) disproportionation known, involving a nitride to imido/triflate transformation. Here, we report a conceptually opposite disproportionation of uranium(IV)-imido complexes to uranium(V)-nitride/uranium(III)-amide mixtures. This is facilitated by benzene, but not toluene, since benzene engages in a redox reaction with the uranium(III)-amide product to give uranium(IV)-amide and reduced arene. These disproportionations occur with potassium, rubidium, and cesium counter cations, but not lithium or sodium, reflecting the stability of the corresponding alkali metal-arene by-products. This reveals an exceptional level of ligand- and solvent-control over a key thermodynamic property of uranium, and is complementary to isolobal uranium(V)-oxo disproportionations, suggesting a potentially wider prevalence possibly with broad implications for the chemistry of uranium.

Recent developments in highly basic N-heterocyclic iminato ligands in actinide chemistry

In the last decade, major conceptual advances in the chemistry of actinide molecules and materials have been made to demonstrate their distinct reactivity profiles as compared to lanthanide and transition metal compounds, but some difficult questions remain concerning the intriguing stability of low-valent actinide complexes, and the importance of the 5f-orbitals in reactivity and bonding. The imidazolin-2-iminato moiety has been extensively used in ligands for the advancement of actinide chemistry owing to its unique capability of stabilizing the reactive and highly electrophilic metal ions by virtue of its strong electron donation and steric tunability. The current review article describes recent developments in the chemistry of light actinide metal ions (thorium and uranium) bearing these N-heterocyclic iminato moieties as supporting ligands. In addition, the effect of ring expansion of the N-heterocycle on the catalytic aptitude of the organoactinides is also described herein. The synthesis and reactivity of actinide complexes bearing N-heterocyclic iminato ligands are presented, and promising apposite applications are also presented. The current review focuses on addressing the catalytic behavior of actinide complexes with oxygen-containing substrates such as in the Tishchenko reaction, hydroelementation processes, and polymerization reactions. Actinide complexes have also found new catalytic applications, as demonstrated by the potent chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration and tandem proton-transfer esterification (TPTE) reaction, featuring coupling between an aldehyde and alcohol.

Production of no-carrier-added 89Zr at an 18 MeV cyclotron, its purification and use in investigations in solvent extraction

The chemical separation of zirconium from lanthanides by liquid–liquid extraction is challenging but critical for medical and technological applications. Using the example of 89Zr, we optimize the liquid–liquid-extraction process by means of the radiotracer technique. We produced 89Zr by proton irradiation of a metallic yttrium target at a cyclotron. The purification of the radionuclide was performed by a UTEVA resin. 89Zr was separated in no-carrier-added form in a sulfuric acid solution. 89Zr was successfully used in solvent extraction tests with calixarenes for the separation of zirconium from lanthanides. This reaction is suitable for the efficient extraction and purification of lanthanides.

Combining EXAFS and Computer Simulations to Refine the Structural Description of Actinyls in Water

EXAFS spectroscopy is one of the most used techniques to solve the structure of actinoid solutions. In this work a systematic analysis of the EXAFS spectra of four actinyl cations, [UO2]2+, [NpO2]2+, [NpO2]+ and [PuO2]2+ has been carried out by comparing experimental results with theoretical spectra. These were obtained by averaging individual contributions from snapshots taken from classical Molecular Dynamics simulations which employed a recently developed [AnO2]2+/+ -H2O force field based on the hydrated ion model using a quantum-mechanical (B3LYP) potential energy surface. Analysis of the complex EXAFS signal shows that both An-Oyl and An-OW single scattering paths as well as multiple scattering ones involving [AnO2]+/2+ molecular cation and first-shell water molecules are mixed up all together to produce a very complex signal. Simulated EXAFS from the B3LYP force field are in reasonable agreement for some of the cases studied, although the k= 6-8 Å-1 region is hard to be reproduced theoretically. Except uranyl, all studied actinyls are open-shell electron configurations, therefore it has been investigated how simulated EXAFS spectra are affected by minute changes of An-O bond distances produced by the inclusion of static and dynamic electron correlation in the quantum mechanical calculations. A [NpO2]+-H2O force field based on a NEVPT2 potential energy surface has been developed. The small structural changes incorporated by the electron correlation on the actinyl aqua ion geometry, typically smaller than 0.07 Å, leads to improve the simulated spectrum with respect to that obtained from the B3LYP force field. For the other open-shell actinyls, [NpO2]2+ and [PuO2]2+, a simplified strategy has been adopted to improve the simulated EXAFS spectrum. It is computed taking as reference structure the NEVPT2 optimized geometry and including the DW factors of their corresponding MD simulations employing the B3LYP force field. A better agreement between the experimental and the simulated EXAFS spectra is found, confirming the a priori guess that the inclusion of dynamic and static correlation refine the structural description of the open-shell actinyl aqua ions.

Studies of aqueous U(iv) equilibrium and nanoparticle formation kinetics using spectrophotometric reaction modeling analysis

Hydrolysis of tetravalent uranium (U(iv)) and U(iv)-nanoparticle formation kinetics were examined over a wide range of temperatures using spectrophotometric reaction modeling analysis. The characteristic absorption bands representing U⁴⁺, U(OH)³⁺, and a proposed oxohydroxo species were newly identified in the UV region (190–300 nm). Dynamic absorption band changes in the UV and visible regions (360–800 nm) were explored to reevaluate the binary ion interaction coefficients for U(iv) ions and the thermodynamic constants of the primary hydrolysis reaction, including complexation constants, enthalpy, and entropy. No further hydrolysis equilibrium beyond the formation of U(OH)³⁺ was identified. Instead, an irreversible transformation of U(iv) ions to U(iv)-nanoparticles (NPs) was found to occur exclusively via the formation of a new intermediate species possessing characteristic absorption bands. The kinetic analysis, based on a two-step, pseudo-first-order reaction model, revealed that the rate of the initial step producing the intermediates is highly temperature-dependent with the measured kinetic energy barrier of ∼188 kJ mol⁻¹. With additional experimental evidence, we conclude that the intermediates are oligomeric oxohydroxo U(iv) species occurring from the condensation of U(iv) ions and simultaneously participating in the nucleation and growth process of UO₂(cr)-NPs.

The primary hydrolysis equilibrium of U⁴⁺ and the kinetics of U(iv)-nanoparticle formation were investigated by using spectrophotometric reaction modeling analysis and the spectral data collected in the UV and visible regions.

Interaction of Polyoxometalates and Nanoparticles with Collector Surfaces—Focus on the Use of Streaming Current Measurements at Flat Surfaces

Streaming current measurements were used to study the interaction of polyoxometalates (POMs) and nanoparticles (NPs) with flat surfaces as an alternative, innovative approach to infer POM and NP properties of potential sparse material in terms of charge and magnitude. With respect to POMs, the approach was able to reveal subtle details of charging properties of +7 vs. +8 charge at very low POM concentrations. For NPs, the sign of charge and even the zeta-potential curve was retrieved. Concerning NPs, mutual interaction between TiO2 and SiO2 surfaces was studied in some detail via macroscopic measurements. Post-mortem analysis of samples from electrokinetic studies and separate investigations via AFM and HRTEM verified the interactions between TiO2 NPs and SiO2 collector surfaces. The interactions in the SiO2/TiO2 system depend to some extent on NP morphology, but in all our systems, irreversible interactions were observed, which would make the studied types of NPs immobile in natural environments. Overall, we conclude that the measurement of streaming currents at flat surfaces is valuable (i) to study NP and POM collector surface interactions and (ii) to simultaneously collect NPs or POM (or other small mobile clusters) for further (structural, morphological or release) investigations.

A novel synthesis of graphene quantum dots via thermal treatment of crude graphite oxide in a dry and alkaline condition, and their application in uranyl detection

In this article, a novel method to synthesize graphene quantum dots was developed via thermal treatment of crude graphite oxide (GO) in a dry and alkaline condition to cut the crude GO sheets into small graphene quantum dots (named as aGQDs). The aGQDs are nano-scale reduced graphene oxide pieces with the sizes around 5-10 nm. The aGQDs could disperse in water for their richment of oxygen-containing groups. The fluorescence properties were carefully investigated. The aGQDS aqueous solution shows a bright yellow-green fluorescence under the UV illumination. Besides, the uranyl ions show a strong fluorescence quenching effect on the a aGQD aqueous solution even at a low concentration (~10-7 M) compared with other common ions in natural water-body, which makes that these aGQDs could be applied as a chemosensor for detection of uranyl ions with good sensitivity and selectivity.

Spectroscopic and Theoretical Insights into Surprisingly Effective Sm(III) Extraction from Alkaline Aqueous Media by o-Phenylenediamine-Derived Sulfonamides

Alkaline high-level waste (HLW) generated as a result of years of nuclear weapons production has complicated composition and requires comprehensive treatment methods, which would allow concentrating its most radiotoxic components in a small volume for geological disposal. We have investigated six alkyl-substituted o-phenylenediamine-derived sulfonamides for extraction and consecutive stripping of Sm(III) from alkaline aqueous media. Up to 81% of Sm(III) recovery at pH 13.0-13.5 was achieved by disulfonamide (dsa) or dsa/Et₃N in CH₂Cl₂, measured after contact with organic phases and subsequent stripping with 0.1 M HNO₃. The use of Et₃N dramatically enhances Sm(III) extraction at lower pH ranges (10.5-11.5) but decreases extraction at pH 13.0-13.5, while control experiments with Et₃N and no dsa showed no extraction. Analysis of the extraction equilibria gave a 1:1 sulfonamide-Sm(III) complexation ratio, with the extracted species also presumed to contain coordinated H₂O or OH^-, as also shown by DFT calculations. Titration experiments of sulfonamides with Sm(III) in CH₃CN were consistent with a 1:1 complexation ratio of dsa-6 to Sm(III) with a K₁₁ = 6.6 × 10⁷ M^-1 derived from nonlinear regression analysis of the 1:1 binding isotherm. Theoretical DFT calculations determined the structures of possible species formed during extraction and the thermodynamics of extraction processes based on several initial [Sm(OH)_y(NO₃)_z(H₂O)_x]^3-y-z species and 1:1 Sm(III)/dsa-3^2- complexes formed in the organic phase, in which dsa complexes to Sm(III) in its bis-deprotonated form (denoted below as dsa-3^2-). Organization of close ion pairs of type {Na[Sm(dsa-3^2-)(OH)₂]·2H₂O} was shown to be thermodynamically favorable for extraction from alkaline aqueous media with pH = 13.0-13.5. Theoretical calculations also demonstrated thermodynamically favorable coordination to Am(III).

The structure and composition of solid complexes comprising of Nd(III), Ca(II) and D-gluconate isolated from solutions relevant to radioactive waste disposal

Certain complexing agents (such as D-gluconate, D-isosaccharinate, etc.) as well as actinides and lanthanides are simultaneously present in cementitious radioactive waste repositories and (in the presence of water) are capable of forming complex compounds. Such processes may immobilize radionuclides and are of importance in the thermodynamic modelling of the aqueous chemistry of waste repositories. Nd(III) is considered to be a suitable model for trivalent lanthanides and actinides, due to the similarity of their ionic radii. In the current work, solid complexes isolated from aqueous solution containing Nd(III), Ca(II) and D-gluconate (Gluc−) were investigated. In an aqueous solution containing Nd(III) and Gluc−, the formation of a precipitate was observed at pH ≥ 8. This precipitate was found to redissolve around pH ~ 11, but reprecipitated when Ca(II) ions were added to the solution. In order to gain an insight in binary and ternary aqueous systems, in the present work we report the structure of these solid complexes obtained from XRD, FT-IR, Raman, SEM-EDAX and UV-DRS measurements. The structure of these solids, where possible, was compared with those identified in solution. The compositions of these complexes are suggested to be NdGlucH−1(OH) · 2H2O and CaNdGlucH−1(OH)3 · 2H2O, respectively. In these, the chemical environment of the Nd(III) was found to be the same as that in the NdGlucH−1(OH)0(aq) solution species.

Interaction of Np(v) with borate in alkaline, dilute-to-concentrated, NaCl and MgCl2 solutions

The formation of sparingly soluble ternary Na/Mg–Np(v)–borate(s) solid phases in alkaline, dilute-to-concentrated, NaCl and MgCl₂ solutions is confirmed by a multimethod experimental approach.

ICRP Publication 141: Occupational Intakes of Radionuclides: Part 4

The 2007 Recommendations (ICRP, 2007) introduced changes that affect the calculation of effective dose, and implied a revision of the dose coefficients for internal exposure, published previously in the Publication 30 series (ICRP, 1979a,b, 1980a, 1981, 1988) and Publication 68 (ICRP, 1994b). In addition, new data are now available that support an update of the radionuclide-specific information given in Publications 54 and 78 (ICRP, 1989a, 1997) for the design of monitoring programmes and retrospective assessment of occupational internal doses. Provision of new biokinetic models, dose coefficients, monitoring methods, and bioassay data was performed by Committee 2 and its task groups. A new series, the Occupational Intakes of Radionuclides (OIR) series, will replace the Publication 30 series and Publications 54, 68, and 78. OIR Part 1 (ICRP, 2015) describes the assessment of internal occupational exposure to radionuclides, biokinetic and dosimetric models, methods of individual and workplace monitoring, and general aspects of retrospective dose assessment. OIR Part 2 (ICRP, 2016), OIR Part 3 (ICRP, 2017), this current publication, and the final publication in the OIR series (OIR Part 5) provide data on individual elements and their radioisotopes, including information on chemical forms encountered in the workplace; a list of principal radioisotopes and their physical half-lives and decay modes; the parameter values of the reference biokinetic models; and data on monitoring techniques for the radioisotopes most commonly encountered in workplaces. Reviews of data on inhalation, ingestion, and systemic biokinetics are also provided for most of the elements. Dosimetric data provided in the printed publications of the OIR series include tables of committed effective dose per intake (Sv per Bq intake) for inhalation and ingestion, tables of committed effective dose per content (Sv per Bq measurement) for inhalation, and graphs of retention and excretion data per Bq intake for inhalation. These data are provided for all absorption types and for the most common isotope(s) of each element. The online electronic files that accompany the OIR series of publications contains a comprehensive set of committed effective and equivalent dose coefficients, committed effective dose per content functions, and reference bioassay functions. Data are provided for inhalation, ingestion, and direct input to blood. En Route Activity of Hydration Water Allied with Uranyl (UO22+) Salts Amid Complexation Reactions with an Organothio-Based (O, N, S) Donor Base

This study provides en route activity of hydration water allied with uranyl salts amid complexation reactions with a donor species L bearing O, N, and S (phenolic, -OH; imine, -HC═N-; and thio-, -S-) donor functionalities. The UO₂²⁺/L reaction encounters a series of hydrolytic steps with hydration water released from uranyl salts during the complexation processes. Primarily, the coordinated [L_{(-HC=N)(OH)(-HC=N)} → UO₂(NO₃)₂/(OAc)₂] species formed during the complexation process undergoes partial hydrolysis of the coordinated ligand resulting in the isolation of an aldehyde coordinated uranyl species [L_{(-HC=N)(OH)(-HC=O)} → UO₂(NO₃)₂/(OAc)₂]. The influence of hydration water continued as the reaction further proceeded to the next stage resulting in alteration of the aldehyde coordinated uranyl species [L_{(-HC=N)(OH)(-HC=O)} → UO₂(NO₃)₂/(OAc)₂] to an oxidized carboxy coordinated uranyl species [L_{(-HC=N) (OH){-C(═O)O}} → (NO₃)/(OAc)]₂ without the use of any external oxidizing agents. These studies are of particular significance as they allow one to realize the adventitious role of hydration water released from commonly used uranyl salts during their reaction with organic donor substrates in nonaqueous medium. These results also form an experimental basis to understand the critical behavior of UO₂²⁺ ion activity (as oxidizing, reducing, or catalytic) relevant in many chemical, biological, and environmental processes.

Strong Uranium(VI) Binding onto Bovine Milk Proteins, Selected Protein Sequences, and Model Peptides

Hexavalent uranium is ubiquitous in the environment. In view of the chemical and radiochemical toxicity of uranium(VI), a good knowledge of its possible interactions in the environment is crucial. The aim of this work was to identify typical binding and sorption characteristics of uranium(VI) with both the pure bovine milk protein β-casein and diverse related protein mixtures (caseins, whey proteins). For comparison, selected model peptides representing the amino acid sequence 13-16 of β-casein and dephosphorylated β-casein were also studied. Complexation studies using potentiometric titration and time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that the phosphoryl-containing proteins form uranium(VI) complexes of higher stability than the structure-analog phosphoryl-free proteins. That is in agreement with the sorption experiments showing a significantly higher affinity of caseins toward uranium(VI) in comparison to whey proteins. On the other hand, the total sorption capacity of caseins is lower than that of whey proteins. The discussed binding behavior of milk proteins to uranium(VI) might open up interesting perspectives for sustainable techniques of uranium(VI) removal from aqueous solutions. This was further demonstrated by batch experiments on the removal of uranium(VI) from mineral water samples.

Fifteen Years of Radionuclide Research at the KIT Synchrotron Source in the Context of the Nuclear Waste Disposal Safety Case

For more than 120 years, systematic studies of X-ray interaction with matter have been the basis for our understanding of materials—both of natural or man-made origin—and their structure-function relationships. Beginning with simple radiographic imaging at the end of the 19th century, X-ray based analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and photoemission or X-ray absorption techniques are indispensable in almost any field of chemical and material sciences—including basic and applied actinide and radionuclide studies. The advent of dedicated synchrotron radiation (SR) sources in the second half of the last century has revolutionized the analytical power of X-ray probes, while—with increasing number of SR facilities—beamline instrumentation followed a trend towards increasing specialization and adaption to a major research topic. The INE-Beamline and ACT station at the KIT synchrotron source belong to the exclusive club of a few synchrotron beamline facilities—mostly located in Europe—dedicated to the investigation of highly radioactive materials. Since commissioning of the INE-Beamline in 2005, capabilities for synchrotron-based radionuclide and actinide sciences at KIT have been continuously expanded, driven by in-house research programs and external user needs.
