Abstract
New Cu(I) catalysts are effective in enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation of a variety of indoles with different β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters. A control study shows that such a catalyst system is less sensitive to air, and the reactions can be carried out without special cares such as glovebox operation or moisture/oxygen-free conditions. Preliminary computation results suggest that there exists π-π stacking between the substrate and the catalyst, and such an interaction seems to play a role in stabilizing the reaction intermediate and enhancing the stereoselectivity of the reactions. The desired products can be obtained in up to 98% yield at 99% enantiomeric excess. The same high enantioselectivity can be observed when the reaction is carried in a gram scale, indicating a good scalability of the catalyst system in enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation of different indoles with β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters.

Abstract
Abstract:
A novel tertiary amine squaramide has successfully developed and applied to catalyze the asymmetric Michael addition between cyclic diketones and β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters. The catalyst system performed well with a low catalyst loading of 1 mol% under mild reaction conditions. A series of synthetically and pharmaceutically useful chiral bicyclic compounds were obtained with both high yields (up to 97%) and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee).

Abstract
A highly efficient asymmetric 1,2-allylation reaction of β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters was realized by using a Bi(OAc)3/chiral phosphoric acid catalyst system under mild conditions. Meanwhile, using this combined strategy of enantioselective 1,2-allylation and subsequent anionic oxy-Cope rearrangement, the asymmetric formal 1,4-allylation reaction was achieved by a one-pot process. These reactions offer rapid access to an array of homoallylic tertiary alcohols and γ-allyl-α-ketoesters with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Density functional theory calculations were conducted to interpret the high enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Heterocycles have been widely used in organic synthesis, agrochemical, pharmaceutical and materials science industries. Catalytic three-component ylide formation/cycloaddition enables the assembly of complex heterocycles from simple starting materials in a highly efficient manner. However, asymmetric versions remain a yet-unsolved task. Here, we present a new bimetallic catalytic system for tackling this challenge. A combined system of Rh(ii) salt and chiral N,N'-dioxide-Sm(iii) complex was established for promoting the unprecedented tandem carbonyl ylide formation/asymmetric [4 + 3]-cycloaddition of aldehydes and α-diazoacetates with β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters smoothly, affording various chiral 4,5-dihydro-1,3-dioxepines in up to 97% yield, with 99% ee. The utility of the current method was demonstrated by conversion of products to optically active multi-substituted tetrahydrofuran derivatives. A possible reaction mechanism was provided to elucidate the origin of chiral induction based on experimental studies and X-ray structures of catalysts and products.

Abstract
A sulfa-Michael/aldol/lactonization cascade reaction has been established to construct isotetronic acid-fused thiochromanes in a highly stereoselective fashion (≥11:1 dr, 35-98% ee). The tricyclic products were obtained in 35-99% isolated yields in the presence of a bifunctional squaramide. Three reactive sites of β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoester, including the less-explored ester carbonyl group, were sequentially utilized to construct two fused heterocycles in a one-pot operation.

Abstract
Prominent in the current stage of drug development, antiviral compounds can be efficiently prepared through cycloaddition reactions. The chapter reports the use of classical Diels–Alder and their hetero version for the design and synthesis of compounds that were tested for their antiviral activities against a variety of viruses. Furthermore, 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of selected 1,3-dipoles, such as azides, nitrones, and nitrile oxides, are reviewed in the light of their application in the preparation of key intermediates for antiviral synthesis. A few examples of [2+2] cycloaddition reactions are also presented. The products obtained from these pericyclic reaction approaches were all tested for their activities in terms of blocking the virus replication, and the relevant biological data are highlighted.

Abstract
The metal-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition (ACA) reaction has emerged as a general and powerful approach for the construction of optically active compounds and is among the most significant and useful reactions in synthetic organic chemistry. In recent years, great progress has been made in this area with the use of various chiral metal complexes based on different chiral ligands. This review provides comprehensive and critical information on the enantioselective 1,4-conjugate addition of nonorganometallic (soft) nucleophiles and their importance in synthetic applications. The literature is covered from the last 10 years, and a number of examples from before 2007 are included as background information. The review is divided into multiple parts according to the type of nucleophile involved in the reaction (such as C-, B-, O-, N-, S-, P-, and Si-centered nucleophiles) and metal catalyst systems used.

Abstract
A series of Cinchona alkaloid-derived dimers were obtained in high yields in copper-catalyzed 1,3-dipolar "click" cycloaddition using bis(TMS)butadiyne and other bivalent alkynes. The products with bitriazole linkers were effective ligands for asymmetric copper-catalyzed Michael addition. It was shown that the presence of such linker was responsible for effective chirality transfer.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation of pyrrole to β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters was developed by virtue of a chiral copper complex, affording the alkylated derivatives of pyrrole with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Moreover, merging copper catalysis with gold catalysis realized a one-pot construction of the seven-membered ring to give annulated pyrroles with moderate to good yields and high enantiomeric excesses.

Abstract
A new highly enantioselective domino Michael/hemiketalization reaction of α-hydroxyacetophenone with β,γ-unsaturated α-keto esters for the synthesis of 2,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted chiral tetrahydrofurans is reported. With 2 mol % intramolecular dinuclear zinc-AzePhenol complex prepared in situ from the reaction of multidentate semi-azacrown ether ligand with ZnEt2 , the corresponding anti-multisubstituted tetrahydrofuran products were obtained in up to 90 % yields, and 98 % enantiomeric excess (ee) at 0 °C for 45 min. Moreover, the products were easily converted to 2,3,5-trisubstituted 2,3-dihydrofurans without any loss in optical activity.
