Accelerated lithium-ion diffusion via a ligand 'hopping' mechanism in lithium enriched solvate ionic liquids

Solvate ionic liquids (SILs), equimolar amounts of lithium salts and polyether glymes, are well studied highly customisable "designer solvents". Herein the physical, thermal and ion mobility properties of SILs with increased LiTFSI (LiTFSA) concentration, with ligand 1 : >1 LiTFSI stoichiometric ratios, are presented. It was found that between 60-80 °C, the lithium cation diffuses up to 4 times faster than the corresponding anion or ligand (glyme). These systems varied from viscous liquids to self-supporting gels, though were found to thin exponentially when heated to mild temperatures (50-60 °C). They were also found to be thermally stable, up to 200 °C, well in excess of normal operating temperatures. Ion mobility, assessed under an electric potential via ionic conductivity, showed the benefit of SIL optimisation for attaining greater concentrations of Li+ cations to store charge during supercapacitor charging and discharging. Molecular dynamics simulations interrogate the mechanism of enhanced diffusion at high temperatures, revealing a lithium hopping mechanism that implicates the glyme in bridging two lithiums through changes in the denticity.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of pyrimidines and their fused derivatives: A review

The pyrimidine scaffold is present in many bioactive drugs; therefore, efficient synthetic routes that provide shorter reaction times, higher yields, and site-selective reactions are constantly being sought. Ultrasound (US) irradiation has emerged as an alternative energy source in the synthesis of these heterocyclic scaffolds, and over the last ten years there has been a significant increase in the number of publications mentioning US in either the construction or derivatization of the pyrimidine core. This review presents a detailed summary (with 140 references) of the effects of US (synergic or not) on the construction and derivatization of the pyrimidine core through classical reactions (e.g., multicomponent, cyclocondensation, cycloaddition, and alkylation reactions). The main points that were taken into consideration are as follows: chemo- and regioselectivity issues, and the results of conventional heating methods compared to US and mechanistic insights that are also presented and discussed for key reactions.

An expeditious and environmentally benign synthesis of dispiro-3-phenylpyrrolothiazoles in ACI/EG eutectic mixture and its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against urinary tract pathogens

The present study reveals the robust and facile methodology for the synthesis of massively selective dispiro-3-phenylpyrrolothiazole hybrids via one-pot 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction by environmentally supported solvents and to evaluate their biological activities. The quaternary ammonium salt eutectic mixture, acetylcholine iodide-ethylene glycol (ACI/EG) medium brings an efficient environment for the synthesis of dispiropyrrolothiazole with excellent yield in shorter reaction time than imidazolium ionic liquids. The eutectic mixture was recovered and reused without any significant drop in their catalytic activity. Among the eight synthesized compounds 4a-h, halogen derivatives are exhibiting significant antimicrobial activities against selected uropathogens pathogens. Interestingly, chloro and bromo derivatives exhibits the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 12.5 μg/ml and 6.25 μg/ml towards Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Staphylococcus aureus respectively. In addition, the IC50 values of DPPH radicals with synthesized compounds are interesting, particularly compounds 4a, 4d and 4e shows lower than the control BHA indicating their potent scavenging ability of free radicals.

New N-phenylacetamide-incorporated 1,2,3-triazoles: [Et3NH][OAc]-mediated efficient synthesis and biological evaluation

A facile, highly efficient, and greener method for the synthesis of new 1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles was conducted using [Et3NH][OAc] as a medium by the implementation of ultrasound irradiation via click chemistry, affording excellent yields. The present synthetic method exhibited numerous advantages such as mild reaction conditions, excellent product yields, minimal chemical waste, operational simplicity, shorter reaction time, and a wide range of substrate scope. The synthesized compounds were further evaluated for in vitro antifungal activity against five fungal strains, and some of the compounds displayed equivalent or greater potency than the standard drug. A molecular docking study against the modelled three-dimensional structure of cytochrome P450 lanosterol 14α-demethylase was also performed to understand the binding affinity and binding interactions of the enzyme. Furthermore, the synthesized compounds were evaluated for DPPH radical scavenging activity and antitubercular activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv strain.

Phosphonium acidic ionic liquid: an efficient and recyclable homogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of 2-arylbenzoxazoles, 2-arylbenzimidazoles, and 2-arylbenzothiazoles

A highly efficient and green strategy for the synthesis of 2-arylbenzoxazoles, 2-arylbenzimidazoles, and 2-arylbenzothiazoles catalyzed by phosphonium acidic ionic liquid has been developed via the condensation of o-aminophenol, o-phenylenediamines, and o-aminothiophenol, respectively, with aldehydes. The reaction has a good yield, the broad substrate scope, and mild condition. Triphenyl(butyl-3-sulphonyl)phosphonium toluenesulfonate catalyst was easily obtained from cheap and available starting materials through a one-pot synthesis. Its structure was identified by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ³¹P NMR, and FT-IR techniques. Other properties including thermal stability and acidity were determined by TGA and Hammett acidity function method. Interestingly, the catalyst can maintain its constantly outstanding performance till the fourth recovery.

A green, straightforward, and efficient synthesis of 2-arylbenzoxazoles, 2-arylbenzimidazoles, and 2-arylbenzothiazoles catalyzed by phosphonium acidic ionic liquid has been developed.

Synthesis of benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidines and 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones under metal-free and solvent-free conditions for minimizing waste generation

Brønsted acidic ionic liquid was found to be an efficient and recyclable catalyst for the synthesis of benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidines and 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones. The reactions proceeded smoothly with a broad scope of substrates providing the expected products in good to excellent yields under an atom-economical pathway. The low-cost recyclable catalyst, metal- and solvent-free conditions, and the ease of product isolation are the highlighted advantages in solving the issue of trace metal contamination in synthesized pharmaceuticals.

A facile, efficient, and atom-economic method for preparing benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidines and 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones under metal- and solvent-free condition has been developed.

Theoretical study on the effective dehydrochlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane catalyzed by tetraalkylphosphonium chlorides: electrostatically controlled reactivity

Herein, we report a DFT study on how and why tetraalkylphosphonium chlorides efficiently catalyze the dehydrochlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane.

1-Alkenyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ionic liquids: novel and low-viscosity ionic liquid electrolytes for dye-sensitized solar cells

Dye-sensitized Solar Cells (DSCs) based on ruthenium complex N719 as sensitizer have received much attention due to their affordability and high efficiency. However, their best performance is only achieved when using volatile organic solvents as electrolyte solutions, which are unstable under prolonged thermal stress. Thus, we developed a new series of 1-alkenyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ionic liquids used as robust DSC electrolytes. These ionic liquids exhibit low viscosity, high conductivity, and thermal stability. The implementation of 1-but-3-enyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate, [ButMIm]OTf, into DSCs gave the best photovoltaic performance. The results are fairly comparable to those reports for other popular ionic liquid electrolytes currently used in DSC field. An insightful discussion on the relationship between the structure of these new ionic liquids and the J–V characterization as well as electrochemical impedance measurement of DSCs will give more interesting information. The results are useful for large-scale outdoor application of DSCs.

New nano-Fe3O4-supported Lewis acidic ionic liquid as a highly effective and recyclable catalyst for the preparation of benzoxanthenes and pyrroles under solvent-free sonication

A novel magnetic nanomaterial-immobilized Lewis acidic ionic liquid was successfully synthesized by the covalent embedding of 3-(3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium chlorozincate (ii) ionic liquid to the surface of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. The material was then characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, TGA, ICP-OES, Raman, and EDS. Its performance as a new-generation Lewis acidic catalyst was also examined on the ultrasound-mediated synthesis of benzoxanthenes and pyrroles. Upon completion, the catalyst was simply recovered by an external magnet for multiple reuses without significant lessening of catalytic performance.

A novel magnetically separable catalyst can be used as a green solid Lewis acid catalyst in the synthesis of benzoxanthenes and pyrroles under solvent-free sonication.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Supramolecular Understanding of 1,3,5-Tris(1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)benzenes

Understanding the supramolecular environment of crystal structures is necessary to facilitate designing molecules with desirable properties. A series of 12 novel 1,3,5-tris(1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)benzenes was used to assess the existence of planar stacking columns in supramolecular structures of pyrazoles. This class of molecules with different substituents may assist in understanding how small structural changes affect the supramolecular environment. The obtained compounds did not present the formation of planar stacking interactions between benzenes in solid or liquid states. This supposition was indicated by single crystal diffraction, Density Functional Theory (DFT) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) calculations, and concentration-dependent liquid-state ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). NMR showed that chemical shifts of benzene and pyrazole hydrogens confirm that planar stacking interactions are not formed in solution. The crystalline structures presented different molecular conformations. The molecular structures of 5 and 9b are in a twisted conformation, while compound 7 showed a conformation analogous to a calyx form.

Prospective Symbiosis of Green Chemistry and Energetic Materials

A global increase in environmental pollution demands the development of new "cleaner" chemical processes. Among urgent improvements, the replacement of traditional hydrocarbon-derived toxic organic solvents with neoteric solvents less harmful for the environment is one of the most vital issues. As a result of the favorable combination of their unique properties, ionic liquids (ILs), dense gases, and supercritical fluids (SCFs) have gained considerable attention as suitable green chemistry media for the preparation and modification of important chemical compounds and materials. In particular, they have a significant potential in a specific and very important area of research associated with the manufacture and processing of high-energy materials (HEMs). These large-scale manufacturing processes, in which hazardous chemicals and extreme conditions are used, produce a huge amount of hard-to-dispose-of waste. Furthermore, they are risky to staff, and any improvements that would reduce the fire and explosion risks of the corresponding processes are highly desirable. In this Review, useful applications of almost nonflammable ILs, dense gases, and SCFs (first of all, CO₂ ) for nitration and other reactions used for manufacturing HEMs are considered. Recent advances in the field of energetic (oxygen-balanced and hypergolic) ILs are summarized. Significant attention is paid to the SCF-based micronization techniques, which improve the energetic performance of HEMs through an efficient control of the morphology and particle size distribution of the HEM fine particles, and to useful applications of SCFs in HEM processing that makes them less hazardous.
