Abstract
A [4+2] cycloaddition strategy to assemble phenanthren-9-yldiphenylphosphine oxides is reported. This reaction relies on the strategic use of readily available phenylallenyl phosphine oxides as dienes to participate in [4+2] cycloaddition with arynes. Notably, benzo[b][1,4]oxaphosphinin-4-iums can be controllably synthesized by simply tuning the substituents in the phosphine oxide unit through a [2+2] cycloaddition cascade.

Abstract
Here we demonstrate the hydrohalogenation reactions of HDDA benzynes promoted by BiX3 reagents for the generation of complex aryl halides. All three bismuth(III) halides can act as the source for their respective halides, i.e., Cl- or Br- or I-. The regiochemical preference for hydrohalogenation is dependent on the nature of the substituent present at the diyne terminus but neither on the linker nor on the BiX3 reagent. The substrate scope for this transformation is broad in terms of the tethers A-B-C and the substituents R1 and R2.

Abstract
The synthesis of complex polysubstituted aromatic molecules from simple precursors is a central goal in organic chemistry. In this study, we developed an approach for the ortho-alkylation of iodoarenes utilizing a dual ligand catalytic system. By combining Pd/olefin ligand cooperative catalysis with bulky trialkylphosphine ligand-promoted C(sp2)-I reductive elimination, we have established an ortho-alkylative Catellani-type reaction with the aryl-iodine bond reconstruction as the final step, which opens new synthetic opportunities within the Catellani-type reactions. Through in-depth mechanistic investigations, we have isolated and characterized key organopalladium intermediates, revealing the synergistic interaction of the dual ligands in merging the Catellani-type process with C(sp2)-I reductive elimination. The present study showcases the unique advantages of Pd/olefin ligand catalysis and emphasizes the effectiveness of the dual ligand system in expanding the chemical space of the Catellani chemistry.

Abstract
This work describes a model study for synthesis of cellulose-based block copolymers, investigating selective coupling of peracetyl β-d-cellobiose and perethyl β-d-cellobiose at their reducing-ends by olefin cross-metathesis (CM). Herein we explore suitable pairs of ω-alkenamides that permit selective, quantitative coupling by CM. Condensation reactions of hepta-O-acetyl-β-d-cellobiosylamine or hepta-O-ethyl-β-d-cellobiosylamine with acyl chlorides afforded the corresponding N-(β-d-cellobiosyl)-ω-alkenamide derivatives with an aromatic olefin or linear olefinic structures. Among the introduced olefinic structures, CM of the undec-10-enamide (Type I olefin) and the acrylamide (Type II olefin) gave the hetero-block tetramers, N-(hepta-O-ethyl-β-d-cellobiosyl)-N'-(hepta-O-acetyl-β-d-cellobiosyl)-alkene-α,ω-diamides, with >98 % selectivity. Moreover, selectivity was not influenced by the cellobiose substituents when a Type I olefin with a long alkyl tether was used. Although the amide carbonyl group could chelate the ruthenium atom and reduce CM selectivity, the results indicated that such chelation is suppressed by sterically hindered pyranose rings or the long alkyl chain between the amido group and the double bond. Based on this model study, selective end-to-end coupling of tri-O-ethyl cellulose and acetylated cellobiose was accomplished, proving the concept that this model study with cellobiose derivatives is a useful signpost for selective synthesis of polysaccharide-based block copolymers.

Abstract
This study presents an efficient synthetic strategy for phenanthrenes and 1-hydroxyphenanthrenes through aromatization-assisted ring-closing metathesis (RCM). It involves vinylation of 1-bromo-2-naphthaldehyde derivatives, Barbier allylation, and subsequent one-pot RCM/dehydration of the diene precursors to yield phenanthrene derivatives. Further, the corresponding keto analogues of diene precursors produce 1-hydroxyphenanthrenes through RCM and aromatization-driven keto-enol tautomerism. This pathway enables rapid access to a diverse array of functionalized phenanthrenes and 1-hydroxyphenanthrenes, including synthetically challenging derivatives containing both -OH and -OMe groups via the sequential construction of the terminal phenanthrene ring.

Abstract
Site-selective ortho/ipso C-H difunctionalizations of aromatic compounds were designed to afford polyfunctionalized arenes including challenging 1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted ones (62 examples, up to 97 % yields). To ensure the excellent regioselectivity of the process while keeping high efficiency, an original strategy based on a "C-H thianthenation/Catellani-type reaction" sequence was developed starting from simple arenes. Non-prefunctionalized arenes were first regioselectively converted into the corresponding thianthrenium salts. Then, a palladium-catalyzed, norbornene (NBE)-mediated process allowed the synthesis of ipso-olefinated/ortho-alkylated polyfunctionalized arenes using a thianthrene as a leaving group (revisited Catellani reaction). Pleasingly, using a commercially available norbornene (NBE) and a unique catalytic system, synthetic challenges known for the Catellani reaction with aryl iodides were smoothly and successfully tackled with the "thianthrenium" approach. The protocol was robust (gram-scale reaction) and was widely applied to the two-fold functionalization of various arenes including bio-active compounds. Moreover, a panel of olefins and alkyl halides as coupling partners was suitable. Pleasingly, the "thianthrenium" strategy was successfully further applied to the incorporation of other groups at the ipso (CN/alkyl/H, aryl) and ortho (alkyl, aryl, amine, thiol) positions, showcasing the generality of the process.

Abstract
An operationally simple and efficient protocol for copper(II)-mediated, picolinamido-directed C8-H sulfonamidation of 1-naphthylamine derivatives with various sulfonamides has been developed. Remarkably, this cross-dehydrogenative C-H/H-N coupling reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope with excellent functional group tolerance, is scalable, and enables an expeditious route to a library of unsymmetrical N-arylated sulfonamides in good to excellent yields with exclusive site selectivity.

Abstract
A concise strategy to prepare polycyclic heteroaromatics involving a deaminative contraction cascade is detailed. The efficient deaminative ring contraction involves the in situ methylation of a biaryl-linked dihydroazepine to form a cyclic ammonium cation that undergoes a base-induced [1,2]-Stevens rearrangement/dehydroamination sequence. The presence of pseudosymmetry guides the retrosynthetic analysis of pyridyl-containing polycyclic heteroaromatics, enabling their construction by the reductive cyclization and deaminative contraction of tertiary amine precursors.

Abstract
Organic metathesis reactions allow for expedient assembly of diverse molecular skeletons and appendages through the exchange of molecular fragments. The olefin-imine variant of this process, in particular, can expand the synthetic toolbox for manipulating carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen bonds but has thus far been achieved only on a stoichiometric metal-mediated basis. Herein, we report the development of a catalytic olefin-imine metathesis reaction, featuring cobalt-catalyzed amidine olefination with enaminones and a versatile product synthon enabling further structural diversification.

Abstract
1,3,5-tri-substituted benzene rings emerged with unique properties has widespread applications in materials, boosting the rapid development of their synthesis. Despite the significance, the direct construction of hetero-1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene core was far less-developed. Herein, we realized a DBU-mediated isomerization/6-π electro-cyclization/oxidative aromatization cascade of sulfonyl-substituted allenyl ketones under an air atmosphere (DBU=1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene). This versatile protocol featured metal-free conditions, easy operation, and broad functional group tolerance provides a new avenue for the construction of hetero-1,3,5-tri-substituted benzene.

Abstract
Juncus species are valuable sources of phenanthrene compounds that have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Effusol and juncusol are the most investigated compounds reported to have antimicrobial and anticancer effects; however, to date, their effects on higher plants have not been investigated. In this study, we examined the effects of effusol and juncusol on the growth and other biochemical parameters of the dicot model plant Arabidopsis thaliana in a concentration-dependent manner with a focus on polyamine metabolism. Phenanthrene induced toxic effects on plant growth and development, while effusol and juncusol induced higher biomass and maintained antioxidant defence mechanisms associated with reduced polyamine degradation. Taken together, our results suggest that these compounds could be good candidates for new biopesticide or biostimulant plant growth regulators in the future.

Abstract
A novel method toward a facile synthesis of diverse benzofuran derivates from easily obtained quinols and alkynyl esters has been reported. A gold-catalyzed intermolecular alkoxylation/Claisen rearrangement/condensation cascade was involved. The introduction of difluorodiphenylsilane as a water-trapping reagent in the reaction leads to a higher yield.

Abstract
A hypervalent iodine-mediated, oxidative alkene arylation reaction has been developed. Both Koser’s reagent (PhI(OH)OTs) and (diacetoxyiodo)toluene (TolI(OAc)2) were equally viable as oxidants, which reacted with ortho-vinylbiphenyl derivatives to produce tri-, tetra- and pentacyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in yields up to 97%. Comparison of this stoichiometric reaction with a previously-reported catalytic process showed that these protocols were largely complementary, and that they likely operate via the same general mechanistic sequence involving vinyliodonium salts decomposing into vinylene phenonium ions. Various mechanistic control experiments were conducted, which ruled out epoxides as intermediates, and which showed that E- and Z- alkene geometry in 10-substituted ortho-vinylbiphenyls had no impact on the ensuing isomeric product distributions. These experiments strongly supported the formation of E-vinyliodonium ions as initial reaction intermediates, and while the occurrence of 1,2-phenyl shift products was a common phenomenon, we concluded that alkyl substitution on the ortho-vinylbiphenyl was a requirement for this alternate pathway to occur.

Abstract
The use of hydrazine-catalyzed ring-closing carbonyl–olefin metathesis (RCCOM) to synthesize polycyclic heteroaromatic (PHA) compounds is described. In particular, substrates bearing Lewis basic functionalities such as pyridine rings and amines, which strongly inhibit acid catalyzed RCCOM reactions, are shown to be compatible with this reaction. Using 5 mol% catalyst loadings, a variety of PHA structures can be synthesized from biaryl alkenyl aldehydes, which themselves are readily prepared by cross-coupling. Hydrazine catalysis enables the ring-closing carbonyl–olefin metathesis (RCCOM) to form polycyclic heteroaromatics, especially those with basic functionality.![]()

Abstract
The synthesis and functionalization of carbazole ring systems have received considerable attention in organic synthesis due to their widespread occurrence in biologically active compounds. One of the classical methods for the synthesis of carbazoles involves C-C bond formation of a biaryl amine moiety by oxidizing agents. Over the last few years, various new strategies have evolved for the synthesis of carbazole ring systems. During the past two decades, ring-closing metathesis (RCM) based approaches have been efficiently employed for the synthesis of nitrogen containing heteroaromatic systems including carbazoles. Herein, we discuss the construction of carbazole ring systems using RCM and the application of RCM based methods in the preparation of other indole-fused heterocycles. The application of these methods in the synthesis of carbazole alkaloids and bioactive indole-fused natural products has been discussed to highlight the importance of RCM in total synthesis.

Abstract
Divergent synthesis is extremely important for the highly efficient preparation of structurally diverse target molecules. Herein, we describe a multicomponent cascade reaction, which allows access to highly substituted pyridines and benzenes by combining four individual steps in a one-pot manner from the same set of readily available starting materials. The azepine intermediates were first used as the precursors for 6π-electrocyclization to construct highly substituted pyridines and benzenes in a tunable manner.

Abstract
Olefin metathesis, a powerful synthetic method with numerous practical applications, can be improved by developing heterogeneous catalysts that can be recycled. In this study, a single-stage process for the entrapment of ruthenium-based catalysts was developed by the sol-gel process. System effectiveness was quantified by measuring the conversion of the ring-closing metathesis reaction of the substrate diethyl diallylmalonate and the leakage of the catalysts from the matrix. The results indicate that the nature of the precursor affects pore size and catalyst activity. Moreover, matrices prepared with tetraethoxysilane at an alkaline pH exhibit a better reaction rate than in the homogenous system under certain reaction conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to present a one-step process that is simpler and faster than the methods reported in the literature for catalyst entrapment by the sol-gel process under standard conditions.

Abstract
A method for remote radical C-H alkynylation and amination of diverse aliphatic alcohols has been developed. The reaction features a copper nucleophile complex formed in situ as a photocatalyst, which reduces the silicon-tethered aliphatic iodide to an alkyl radical to initiate 1,n-hydrogen atom transfer. Unactivated secondary and tertiary C-H bonds at β, γ, and δ positions can be functionalized in a predictable manner.

Abstract
We report the design, synthesis, structure, bonding, and reaction of a neutral 2π aromatic three‐membered disilaborirane. The disilaborirane is synthesized by a facile one‐pot reductive dehalogenation of amidinato‐silylene chloride and dibromoarylborane with potassium graphite. Despite the tetravalent arrangement of atoms around silicon, the three‐membered silicon‐boron‐silicon ring is aromatic, as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy, nucleus independent chemical shift calculations, first‐principles electronic structure studies using density functional theory (DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) based bonding analysis. Trimethylsilylnitrene, generated in situ, inserts in the Si−Si bond of disilaborirane to obtain a four‐membered heterocycle 1‐aza‐2,3‐disila‐4‐boretidine derivative. Both the heterocycles are fully characterized by X‐ray crystallography.

Abstract
The metal-carbon triple bonds and carbon-carbon triple bonds are both highly unsaturated bonds. As a result, their reactions tend to afford cycloaddition intermediates or products. Herein, we report a reaction of M≡C and C≡C bonds that affords acyclic addition products. These newly discovered reactions are highly efficient, regio- and stereospecific, with good functional group tolerance, and are robust under air at room temperature. The isotope labeling NMR experiments and theoretical calculations reveal the reaction mechanism. Employing these reactions, functionalized dπ-pπ conjugated systems can be easily constructed and modified. The resulting dπ-pπ conjugated systems were found to be good electron transport layer materials in organic solar cells, with power conversion efficiency up to 16.28% based on the PM6: Y6 non-fullerene system. This work provides a facile, efficient methodology for the preparation of dπ-pπ conjugated systems for use in functional materials.
