Abstract
The hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsule has been utilized as one of the most versatile supramolecular capsule catalysts. Enlarging its size would enable expansion of the substrate size scope. However, no larger catalytically active versions have been reported. Herein, we introduce a novel class of macrocycles, named window[1]resorcin[3]arene (wRS), that assemble to a cage-like hexameric host. The new host was studied by NMR, encapsulation experiments, and molecular dynamics simulations. The cage is able to bind tetraalkylammonium ions that are too large for encapsulation inside the hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsule. Most importantly, it retained its catalytic activity, and the accelerated conversion of a large substrate that does not fit the closed hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsule was observed. Thus, it will help to expand the limited substrate size scope of the closed hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsule.

Abstract
The history of electronic structure calculations on the endohedral complexes of fullerenes is reviewed. First, the long road to the isolation of new allotropes of carbon that commenced with the seminal organic syntheses involving simple inorganic substrates is discussed. Next, the focus is switched to author's involvement with fullerene research that has led to the in silico discovery of endohedral complexes. The predictions of these pioneering theoretical studies are juxtaposed against the data afforded by subsequent experimental developments. The successes and failures of the old and modern quantum-chemical calculations on endohedral complexes are summarized and their remaining deficiencies requiring further attention are identified.

Abstract
A new class of macrocycles denoted as "xanthene[n]arenes" was synthesized. In contrast to most other macrocycles, they feature a conformationally restricted bowl shape due to the attached alkyl groups at the linking methylene units. This facilitates the synthesis of cavitands and the self-assembly to molecular capsules via noncovalent interactions. The derivatization potential of the novel macrocycles was demonstrated on the xanthene[3]arene scaffold. Besides a deep cavitand and an oxygen-embedded zigzag hydrocarbon belt[12]arene, a modified macrocycle was synthesized that self-assembles into a hydrogen-bonded tetrameric capsule, demonstrating the potential of xanthene[n]arenes as a new set of macrocyclic building blocks.

Abstract
The purpose of this work is to develop a magnetically recyclable immobilized base catalyst for the green synthesis of calixresorcarenes. To achieve this, poly triazine-benzene sulfonamide (PTBSA) has been coated on magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and subsequently chlorosulfonic acid has been supported to obtain Fe3O4@PTBSA-SO3H. The structure of nano-Fe3O4@PTBSA-SO3H was characterized by TEM, XRD, FT-IR, VSM, WDX, EDX, TGA/DSC and FE-SEM. The catalytic efficiency of this catalyst was also investigated in the synthesis of novel calixresorcarene derivatives. The advantages of heterogeneous nature, catalytic activity and the recyclability of the polymer support were also strengthened by advanced surface treatment. These key factors (basic sites, acidic sites and heterogeneity) play essential roles in the catalyst performance. This procedure has some advantages such as short reaction time, clean and fast work-up and easy separation of the catalyst by an external magnet. Magnetic poly triazine-benzene sulfonamide-SO3H was investigated for the synthesis of calixresorcarenes.![]()

Abstract
Three novel thiol bearing resorcin[4]arene and pyrogallol[4]arene derivatives were synthesized. Their properties were studied with regards to self-assembly, disulfide chemistry, and Brønsted acid catalysis. This work demonstrates that (1) one aromatic thiol on the resorcin[4]arene framework is tolerated in the self-assembly process to a hexameric hydrogen bond-based capsule, (2) thio-derivatized resorcin[4]arene analogs can be covalently linked through disulfides, and (3) the increased acidity of aromatic thio-substituent is not sufficient to replace HCl as cocatalyst for capsule catalyzed terpene cyclizations.

Abstract
Two organic cages have been prepared in situ in water through the 2 + 3 hydrazone coupling of two pyridinium-derived trialdehydes and oxalohydrazide. The highly water-soluble cages encapsulate and solubilize linear neutral molecules. Such encapsulation has been applied for the promotion of both two- or three-component hydrazone condensation in water. For two-component reactions, the yields of the resulting monohydrazones are increased from 5-10 to 90-96%. For three-component reactions of hydrazinecarbohydrazide with 11 aromatic aldehydes, in the presence of the organic cages, the bihydrazone products can be produced in 88-96% yields. In contrast, without the promotion of the organic cages, 9 of the reactions do not afford the corresponding dihydrazone product.

Abstract
[{ReI(CO)3(Hbim)}3(tpta)]2 (1, Hbim- = 2,2'-biimidazolate monoanion, tpta = 2,4,6-tripyridyl-1,3,5-triazine) was prepared as a nano-space supramolecule by using a new group of H-bonded coordination capsules. The hamburger bun-shaped half unit [{ReI(CO)3(Hbim)}3(tpta)] contains six intermolecular H-bonds of Hbim- ligands with complementary dual NHN types, and three [ReI(CO)3(Hbim)] are coordinated by bridging tridentate tpta. Interestingly, mechanical grinding easily would convert single crystals of 1 to an amorphous state with minor crystallinity while maintaining the nano-space pores. The ground sample can reversibly uptake and release small molecules such as CO2 and (CH2Cl)2.

Abstract
Diarylmethanes are cardinal scaffolds by virtue of their unique structural feature including the presence of a benzylic CH2 group that can be easily functionalized to generate a variety of fascinating molecules holding immense importance in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and material sciences. While the originally developed protocols for benzylic C-H functionalization in diarylmethanes employing base-mediated and metal-catalyzed strategies are still actively used, they are joined by a new array of metal-free conditions, offering milder and benign conditions. With the recent surge of interest towards the synthesis of functionalized diarylmethanes, numerous choices are now available for a synthetic organic chemist to transform the benzylic C-H bond to C-C or C-X bond offering the synthesis of any molecule of choice. This review highlights benzylic methylene (CH2 ) functionalizations of diaryl/heteroarylmethanes utilizing various base-mediated, transition-metal-catalyzed, and transition-metal free approaches for the synthesis of structurally diverse important organic molecules, often with a high chemo-, regio- and enantio-selectivity. This review also attempts to provide analysis of the scope and limitations, mechanistic understanding, and sustainability of the transformations.

Abstract
In this study, the synthesis and structure of 4-aminocoumarin derivatives of resorcin[4]arene were investigated. Spectroscopic analysis and quantum mechanical calculations showed that this molecule undertakes a crown-in conformation in chloroform. The conformations of the aminocoumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene were compared with a hydroxycoumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene, and the effect of the substituent on the conformational selectivity of the coumarin derivatives of resorcin[4]arene was demonstrated. Both UV-VIS and fluorescence spectroscopy for the coumarin derivative of resorcin[4]arene (3) were performed, and a strong fluorescence quenching of derivative 3 compared to 4-aminocoumarin was observed.

Abstract
Covalent organic capsules, such as carcerands and hemicarcerands, are an interesting class of molecular hosts. These container molecules have confined spaces capable of hosting small molecules, although the fact that the size of the inner cavities cannot be changed substantially limits the scope of their applications. The title covalently linked container was produced by metal-directed dimerization of a resorcinarene-based cavitand having four 2,2'-bipyridyl arms on the wide rim followed by olefin metathesis at the vertices of the resulting capsule with a second-generation Grubbs catalyst. The covalently linked bipyridyl arms permit expansion of the inner cavity by demetalation. This structural change influences the molecular recognition properties; the metal-coordinated capsule recognizes only 4,4'-diacetoxybiphenyl, whereas the metal-free counterpart can encapsulate not only 4,4'-diacetoxybiphenyl, but also 2,5-disubstituted-1,4-bis(4-acetoxyphenylethynyl)benzene, which is 9.4 Å longer than the former guest. Molecular mechanics calculations predict that the capsule expands the internal cavity to encapsulate the long guest by unfolding the folded conformation of the alkyl chains, which demonstrates the flexible and regulable nature of the cavity. Guest competition experiments show that the preferred guest can be switched by metalation and demetalation. This external-stimuli-responsive guest exchange can be utilized for the development of functional supramolecular systems controlling the uptake, transport, and release of chemicals.

+·Cl− (1), and bis(2,2′-{[(6-chloro-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)bis(azanediyl)]bis(methylene)}bis(1H-benzimidazol-3-ium)) tetrachloride heptahydrate, 2C19H18ClN9
2+·4Cl−·7H2O (2). Both salts were characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and IR spectroscopy. Moreover, the NMR (1H and 13C) spectra of 1 were obtained. Salts 1 and 2 have triclinic symmetry (space group P-1) and their supramolecular structures are stabilized by hydrogen bonding and offset π–π interactions. In hydrated salt 2, the noncovalent interactions yield pseudo-nanotubes filled with chloride anions and water molecules, which were modelled in the refinement with substitutional and positional disorder.

Abstract
Two molecules of tetra(4-pyridyl)cavitand 1 and four molecules of isophthalic acid linker 2a with a triethylene glycol monomethyl ether (TEG) group self-assembled into a six-component capsule 12·2a4 through eight pyNHO2C hydrogen bonds, which encapsulates one molecule of guest G such as bis(4-acetoxyphenyl)acetylene and hexakis(4-iodophenyl)benzene to form G@(12·2a4). Guest-encapsulation ability and selectivity of 12·2a4 were revealed. trans-5-(p-Substituted-phenylazo)isophthalic acid with two dichotomous branching TEG groups trans-2b serves as a photoresponsive linker to form 12·(trans-2b)4, which moderately reduced guest-encapsulation ability upon photoisomerization (at the photostationary state, 10% guest release upon subunit-trans-2b/subunit-cis-2b = 18 : 82).

Abstract
Two calix[6]arene-based molecular containers were synthesized in high yields. These containers can encapsulate small guests through a unique "rotating door" complexation process. The sequestration of greenhouse gases is clearly demonstrated. They can be stored in the solid state for long periods and released via dissolution of the inclusion complex.

Abstract
The C‐ethyl‐2‐methylresorcinarene (1) forms 1:1 in‐cavity complexes with aromatic N,N′‐dioxides, only if each of the aromatic rings has an N−O group. The structurally different C‐shaped 2,2′‐bipyridine N,N′‐dioxide (2,2′‐BiPyNO) and the linear rod‐shaped 4,4′‐bipyridine N,N′‐dioxide (4,4′‐BiPyNO) both form 1:1 in‐cavity complexes with the host resorcinarene in C4v crown and C2v conformations, respectively. In the solid state, the host–guest interactions between the 1,3‐bis(4‐pyridyl)propane N,N′‐dioxide (BiPyPNO) and the host 1 stabilize the unfavorable anti‐gauche conformation. Contrary to the N,N′‐dioxide guests, the mono‐N‐oxide guest, 4‐phenylpyridine N‐oxide (4PhPyNO), does not form an in‐cavity complex in the solid state. The host–guest complexation and the relative guest affinities were studied through 1H NMR competition experiments in methanol. Single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography of the 1:1 complexes supports the proposed solution‐state structures, also revealing strong hydrogen bonds between the host and the guests, not observed in solution owing to hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange processes in methanol.

Abstract
Size-complementary cyclotriveratrylene (CTV)-based hosts can incarcerate C76 , C78 , and C84 , thus allowing the selective isolation of these higher-order fullerenes from a commercially available mixture of fullerenes. The hemicarceplexes, formed after the encapsulation of the size-complementary fullerenes within the hosts, are isolated by column chromatography and released at elevated temperature, thereby leading to the isolation of C76 /C78 and C84 in good purities (up to 95 and 88 %, respectively).

Abstract
On the basis of many literature measurements, a critical overview is given on essential noncovalent interactions in synthetic supramolecular complexes, accompanied by analyses with selected proteins. The methods, which can be applied to derive binding increments for single noncovalent interactions, start with the evaluation of consistency and additivity with a sufficiently large number of different host-guest complexes by applying linear free energy relations. Other strategies involve the use of double mutant cycles, of molecular balances, of dynamic combinatorial libraries, and of crystal structures. Promises and limitations of these strategies are discussed. Most of the analyses stem from solution studies, but a few also from gas phase. The empirically derived interactions are then presented on the basis of selected complexes with respect to ion pairing, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic contributions, halogen bonding, π-π-stacking, dispersive forces, cation-π and anion-π interactions, and contributions from the hydrophobic effect. Cooperativity in host-guest complexes as well as in self-assembly, and entropy factors are briefly highlighted. Tables with typical values for single noncovalent free energies and polarity parameters are in the Supporting Information.
