Abstract
The structure of solvent molecules within zeolite pores influences the rates and selectivities of catalytic reactions by altering the free energies of reactive species. Here, we examine the consequences of these effects on the kinetics and thermodynamics of 1,2-epoxybutane (C4H8O) ring-opening with methanol (CH3OH) in acetonitrile (CH3CN) cosolvent over Lewis acidic (Zr-BEA) and Brønsted acidic (Al-BEA) zeolites of varying (SiOH) x density. Despite ostensibly identical reaction mechanisms across materials, turnover rates depend differently on (SiOH) x density between acid types. (SiOH) x -rich Zr-BEA (Zr-BEA-OH) provides ∼10 times greater rates than a (SiOH) x -poor material (Zr-BEA-F), while Al-BEA-OH and Al-BEA-F give turnover rates within a factor of 2. Zr-BEA-OH shows more positive activation enthalpies and entropies than Zr-BEA-F across the range of [CH3OH], which reflect the displacement of solvent molecules and lead to greater rates in Zr-BEA-OH due to the dominant role of entropic gains. Measurements of the density and composition of solvent within the pores show that the (SiOH) x nests within Zr-BEA-OH promote hydrogen-bonded solvent structures distinct from Zr-BEA-F, while the Brønsted acid sites confer interactions similar to (SiOH) x nests and give solvent structures within Al-BEA-F that resemble those within Al-BEA-OH. Correlations between apparent activation enthalpies and C4H8O adsorption enthalpies show that interactions with solvent molecules give proportional changes to both C4H8O adsorption and ring-opening transition state formation. The differences in intrapore environment carry consequences for both rates and regioselectivities of epoxide ring-opening, as demonstrated by product regioselectivities that increase by a factor of 3 in response to changes in solvent composition and the type of acid site in the *BEA structure (i.e., Lewis or Brønsted). These results demonstrate the ability to control rates, regioselectivities, and adsorption thermodynamics relevant for industrially relevant liquid-phase reactions through the design of noncovalent interactions among solvating molecules, reactive species, and (SiOH) x functions.

Abstract
Nanostructured materials continue to find applications in various electronic and sensing devices, chromatography, separations, drug delivery, renewable energy, and catalysis. While major advancements on the synthesis and characterization of these materials have already been made, getting information about their structures at sub-nanometer resolution remains challenging. It is also unfortunate to find that many emerging or already available powerful analytical methods take time to be fully adopted for characterization of various nanomaterials. The scanning low energy electron microscopy (SLEEM) is a good example to this. In this report, we show how clearer structural and surface information at nanoscale can be obtained by SLEEM, coupled with deep learning. The method is demonstrated using Au nanoparticles-loaded mesoporous silica as a model system. Moreover, unlike conventional scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SLEEM does not require the samples to be coated with conductive films for analysis; thus, not only it is convenient to use but it also does not give artifacts. The results further reveal that SLEEM and deep learning can serve as great tools to analyze materials at nanoscale well. The biggest advantage of the presented method is its availability, as most modern SEMs are able to operate at low energies and deep learning methods are already being widely used in many fields.

Abstract
Nanoconfinement within enzymes can increase reaction rate and improve selectivity under mild conditions. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve chemical reactions imitating enzymes with directional molecular motion, short reaction time, ≈100% conversion, and chiral conversion in artificial nanoconfined systems. Here, directional flow ring-opening reactions of styrene oxide and alcohols are demonstrated with ≈100% conversion in <120 s at 22 °C using graphene oxide membrane nanoreactors. Dominant products have the same configuration as chiral styrene oxide in confined reactions, which is dramatically opposed to bulk reactions. The unique chiral conversion mechanism is caused by spatial confinement, limiting the inversion of benzylic chiral carbon. Moreover, the enantiomeric excess of same-configuration products increased with higher alkyl charge in confined reactions. This work provides a new route to achieve rapid flow ring-opening reactions with specific chiral conversion within 2D nanoconfined channels, and insights into the impact of nanoconfinement on ring-opening reaction mechanisms.

Abstract
Inspired by recent advances on functional modification of cellulosic materials, the crosslinking behaviors of epoxide with cellulose under the catalysis of different homogeneous catalysts including H2O, Brønsted acid, Brønsted base, Lewis acid and neutral salt were systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) methods with hybrid micro-solvation-continuum approach. The results showed that catalytic activity, reaction mechanism and regioselectivity are determined by the combined effect of catalyst type, electronic effect and steric hindrance. All the homogeneous catalysts have catalytic activity for the crosslinking reaction, which decreases in the order of NaOH > HCl > NCl3 > MCl2 > CH3COOH > NaCl (N = Fe3+, Al3+; M = Zn2+, Ca2+). Upon the catalysis of NaOH, hydroxyl group of cellulose is firstly deprotonated to form a carbanion-like intermediate which will further attack the less sterically hindered C atom of epoxide showing excellent regioselectivity. Acidic catalysts readily cause epoxide protonated, which suffers from nucleophilic attack of cellulose and forms the carbocation-like intermediate. Brønsted acid exhibits poor regioselectivity, however, Lewis acid shows an interesting balance between catalytic activity and regioselectivity for the crosslinking reaction, which may be attributed to the unique catalysis and stabilization effects of its coordinated H2O on the transition state structure.

Abstract
The synthesis of highly functionalized five-membered oxa- and aza-heterocycles has been reported utilizing hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) catalysis. In this method, an epoxide was taken as a substrate and reacted with functionalized arylidene/alkylidene malononitrile derivatives in the presence of a newly designed HBD catalyst. In all the cases, the products 2,5-disubstituted tetrahydrofurans (2,5-THFs) were obtained in good to excellent yields (up to 86%) with high diastereoselectivity (dr up to 99:1) as a single regioisomer. The stereochemistry at the 2- and 5-positions of the five-membered ring has been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis, and cis is found to be the major product. The same strategy has been further utilized to obtain substituted oxazolidines whenever the epoxide has been reacted with isocyanate as an electrophile. In order to induce enantioselectivity, a chiral epoxide has been reacted with both the electrophiles in the presence of the same catalyst system to afford the single stereoisomer of the final products. This synthetic methodology involves a low catalyst loading and ambient reaction condition and has been generalized with various substituents present in the starting electrophiles to produce the resultant products in acceptable yields and stereoselectivity.

Abstract
β-Alkoxyalcohols generated from epoxide ring-opening reactions are significant due to their enormous value as pharmaceutical intermediates and fine chemicals. Using a phenyl-substituted double-decker-type silsesquioxane as the precursor, a hybrid porous material (PCS-DDSQ) was synthesized through a Scholl coupling reaction with an AlCl3 catalyst. Then, novel excellent Brønsted acid-derived silsesquioxane solid catalysts (PCS-DDSQ-SO3H-x) were successfully obtained through an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction of chlorosulfonic acid on phenyl rings of PCS-DDSQ, fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed desorption, water contact angle, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller model, thermogravimetric analysis, and solid-state 13C and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The catalytic behavior of the PCS-DDSQ-SO3H-x with different SO3H loadings for the methanolysis of styrene oxide was compared and evaluated. The presence of SO3H groups endows them with excellent catalytic abilities, achieving the highest values from PCS-DDSQ-SO3H-1 (the acid site of its catalyst is 1.84 mmol/g) as 99% conversion and 100% selectivity for the methanolysis of styrene oxide in 30 min, which shows superior catalytic properties of low dosage and high efficiency. Furthermore, the PCS-DDSQ-SO3H-1 catalyst can maintain high activity and selectivity after three cycles. This study provides a feasible method for the preparation of Brønsted solid acid catalysts with different acid loadings by introducing the sulfonic group into PCS-DDSQ.

Abstract
Surface modification of mesoporous SBA-15 with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane greatly enhances its capability to adsorb the tetrachloroauric anion (AuCl4-). The calcination of the sample after the adsorption experiment led to the generation of homogeneously dispersed, spherical, single crystalline gold nanoparticles (Au0 NPs) of less than 5 nm size, embedded on SBA-15 as observed from the TEM images. The as-prepared SBA-15/Au0 nanohybrid material has offered excellent catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of cyclohexane using TBHP as the oxidant in the absence of any solvent. A maximum of 48.7% cyclohexane conversion was achieved and surprisingly, cyclohexanone (K) has much higher selectivity (>95%) than cyclohexanol (A). The hot-filtration study confirmed the leach-resistant characteristics as well as the true heterogeneous catalytic activity of the SBA-15/Au0 nanohybrid catalyst. The catalyst was recycled up to four times without significant loss in its catalytic activity.

Abstract
Nucleophilic ring opening reactions of epoxides with aromatic amines are in the forefront of the synthetic organic chemistry research to build new bioactive scaffolds. Here, convenient, green, and highly efficient regioselective ring opening reactions of sterically hindered (2R,3S)-3-(N-Boc-amino)-1-oxirane-4-phenylbutane with various poorly reactive aromatic amines are accomplished under microwave irradiation in nitromethane. All the reactions effectively implemented for various aromatic amines involve the reuse of nitromethane that supports its dual role as a solvent and catalyst. The corresponding new β-alcohol analogs of hydroxyethylamine (HEA) are isolated in 41-98% yields. The reactions proceed under mild conditions for a broad range of less reactive and sterically hindered aromatic amines. Proton NMR experiments suggest that the nucleophilicity of amines is influenced by nitromethane, which is substantiated by the extensive computational studies. Overall, this methodology elucidates the first-time use of nitromethane as a solvent for the ring opening reactions under microwave conditions involving an equimolar ratio of epoxide and aromatic amine without any catalyst, facile ring opening of complex epoxide by less reactive aromatic amines, low reaction time, less energy consumption, recycling of the solvent, and simple workup procedures.

Abstract
A one‐pot multi‐step method for the oxidative cleavage of alkenes to aldehydes/ketones under ambient conditions is described as an alternative to ozonolysis. The first step is a highly efficient manganese catalyzed epoxidation/cis‐dihydroxylation of alkenes. This step is followed by an Fe(III) assisted ring opening of the epoxide (where necessary) to a 1,2‐diol. Carbon–carbon bond cleavage is achieved by treatment of the diol with sodium periodate. The conditions used in each step are not only compatible with the subsequent step(s), but also provide for increased conversion compared to the equivalent reactions carried out on the isolated intermediate compounds. The described procedure allows for carbon–carbon bond cleavage in the presence of other alkenes, oxidation sensitive moieties and other functional groups; the mild conditions (r.t.) used in all three steps make this a viable general alternative to ozonolysis and especially for use under flow or continuous batch conditions.

Abstract
A FeIII -triflate complex, bearing a bis-thioether-di-phenolate [OSSO]-type ligand, was discovered to promote the ring-opening of glycidol with alcohols under mild reaction conditions (0.05 mol % catalyst and 80 °C). The reaction proceeded with high activity (initial turnover frequency of 1680 h-1 for EtOH) and selectivity (>95 %) toward the formation of twelve monoalkyl glyceryl ethers (MAGEs) in a regioselective fashion (84-96 % yield of the non-symmetric regioisomer). This synthetic approach allows the conversion of a glycerol-derived platform molecule (i.e., glycidol) to high-value-added products by using an Earth-crust abundant metal-based catalyst.

Abstract
Herein, an innovative approach was developed by using stable, lead-free halide perovskite for solar-driven organic synthesis. The ring-opening reaction of epoxides was chosen as a model system for the synthesis of value-added β-alkoxy alcohols, which require energy-intensive process conditions and corrosive, strong acids for conventional synthesis. The developed concept included the in situ preparation of Cs3 Bi2 Br9 and its simultaneous application as photocatalyst for epoxide alcoholysis under visible-light irradiation in air at 293 K, with exceptional high activity and selectivity ≥86 % for β-alkoxy alcohols and thia-compounds. The Cs3 Bi2 Br9 photocatalyst exhibited good stability and recyclability. In contrast, the lead-based perovskite showed a conversion rate of only 1 %. The origin of the unexpected catalytic behavior was attributed to the combination of the photocatalytic process and the presence of suitable Lewis-acidic centers on the surface of the bismuth halide perovskite photocatalyst.

Abstract
FeIII -containing hyper-crosslinked microporous nanotubes (FeNTs) and nanospheres (FeNSs) are synthesized through the reaction of catechol and dimethoxymethane in the presence of FeCl3 or CF3 SO3 H. Both FeNTs and FeNSs demonstrate excellent catalytic activity in Lewis acid catalysis (hydrolysis and regioselective methanolysis of styrene oxide) and tandem catalysis involving a sequential oxidation-cyclization process, which selectively converts benzyl alcohol to 2-phenyl benzimidazole. Apart from Lewis acidity, the FeNTs and FeNSs also showed CO2 uptake capacities of 2.6 and 2.2 mmol g-1 , respectively, at a pressure of 1 atm and temperature of 273 K. Furthermore, Ag nanoparticles are immobilized successfully on the surfaces of FeNTs and FeNSs by the liquid-phase impregnation method to prepare Ag@FeNT and Ag@FeNS nanocomposites, which show high catalytic activity for the selective fixation of CO2 to phenylacetylene to yield phenylpropiolic acid at 60 °C and 1 atm CO2 pressure. Hence, FeIII -catechol-containing hyper-crosslinked nanotubes and nanospheres have huge potential not only as Lewis acid catalysts, but also as excellent supports for immobilizing Ag nanoparticles in the design of a robust catalyst for the carboxylation of terminal alkynes, which has wide scope in catalysis and environmental research.

Abstract
A new porphyrin-based porous organic polymer (POP) with BET surface area ranging from 780 to 880 m2/g was synthesized in free-base form via the reaction of meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl) porphyrin and a rigid trigonal building block, hexahydroxytriphenylene. The material was then metallated with Fe(III) imparting activity for Lewis acid catalysis (regioselective methanolysis ring-opening of styrene oxide), oxidative cyclization catalysis (conversion of bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methanes to the corresponding spirodienone), and a tandem catalytic processes: an in situ oxidation-cyclic aminal formation-oxidation sequence, which selectively converts benzyl alcohol to 2-phenyl-quinazolin-4(3H)-one. Notably, the catalyst is readily recoverable and reusable, with little loss in catalytic activity.

Abstract
1-Benzoyl-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide (H3bpt) was treated with acid - base in one sequence and base - acid in other sequence, both of which lead to ring formation of thiosemicarbazide group, giving N-phenyl-5-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine (Hppta) in the first case and 4,5-diphenyl-2,4-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione (Hdptt) in the second case. The primary (H3bpt) as well as the resulting compounds (Hppta & Hdptt) has been characterized by elemental analyses, NMR, FTIR and Raman spectroscopic techniques. The quantum chemical calculations of the compounds are performed using DFT/B3LYP/6311G(d,p) method for geometry optimizations and also for prediction of the molecular properties. The cyclization is confirmed by disappearance of many bands belonging to the open chain subgroups of H3bpt such as; NH stretching, NH bending, CN stretching, NH puckering, CO stretching etc. The ring formation of 1-benzoyl-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide (H3bpt) has been further confirmed by the appearance of many bands belonging to the closed ring of thiosemicarbazide in the resulting compounds Hppta and Hdptt.
