Stereoselective Gold(I)-Catalyzed Intermolecular Hydroalkoxlation of Alkynes

Zinc-Catalyzed Cyclization of Alkynyl Derivatives: Substrate Scope and Mechanistic Insights

Novel alkyl zinc complexes supported by acetamidate/thioacetamidate heteroscorpionate ligands have been successfully synthesized and characterized. These complexes exhibited different coordination modes depending on the electronic and steric effects of the acetamidate/thioacetamidate moiety. Their catalytic activity has been tested toward the hydroelementation reactions of alkynyl alcohol/acid substrates, affording the corresponding enol ether/unsaturated lactone products under mild reaction conditions. Kinetic studies have been performed and confirmed that reactions are first-order in [catalyst] and zero-order in [alkynyl substrate]. DFT calculations supported a reaction mechanism through the formation of the catalytically active species, an alkoxide-zinc intermediate, by a protonolysis reaction of the Zn-alkyl bond with the alcohol group of the substrate. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, a catalytic cycle has been proposed.

Palladium-catalyzed selective C-C bond cleavage of keto-vinylidenecyclopropanes: construction of structurally rich dihydrofurans and tetrahydrofurans

Palladium-catalyzed selective cleavage of the distal C-C bond and proximal C-C bond of keto-vinylidenecyclopropanes by altering the sterically bulky phosphine ligands has been realized. The proximal C-C bond cleavage can be achieved by using dtbpf as a phosphine ligand, affording bicyclic products containing dihydrofuran skeletons in good yields along with broad substrate scope. In proximal C-C bond cleavage reactions, the eight-membered cyclic palladium intermediate plays a key role in the reaction. The [3 + 2] cycloaddition of keto-vinylidenecyclopropanes through the distal C-C bond cleavage can be effectively accomplished with t BuXPhos as a phosphine ligand and ZnCl2 as an additive, delivering bicyclic products containing tetrahydrofuran skeletons in good yields. The further transformation of these bicyclic products has been demonstrated, and the reaction mechanisms of two different C-C bond cleavage reactions have been investigated by control experiments and DFT calculations.

Titanium-catalyzed highly stereoselective anti-Markovnikov intermolecular hydroalkoxylation of alkynes to prepare Z-enol ethers

Enol ethers are essential synthetic frameworks and widely applied in organic synthesis; however, high regio- and stereo-selective access to enol ethers remains challenging. Herein, we report a titanium-catalyzed stereospecific anti-Markovnikov hydroalkoxylation reaction of alkynes for the synthesis of Z-enol ethers with excellent functional group tolerance and yields. Mechanistic studies showed that the titanium coordinates with the alkyne and then an oxygen anion attacks the π-bond of the alkyne from the backside to provide a trans-oxygen metallation intermediate, which accounts for the high Z-stereoselectivity. Furthermore, Z-enol ethers could be applied as a kind of synthon for late-stage transformations and gram-scale synthesis, which demonstrates their potential value in organic synthesis.

Formation of pyramidal structures through mixing gold and platinum atoms: the AuxPty2+ clusters with x + y = 10

The geometric and electronic structures of a small series of mixed gold and platinum AuxPty2+ clusters, with x + y = 10, were investigated using quantum chemical methods. A consistent tetrahedral pyramid structure emerges, displaying two patterns of structural growth by a notable critical point at y = 5. This affects the clusters' electron population, chemical bonding, and stability. For the Pt-doped Au clusters with y values from 2 to 5, the bonds enable Pt atoms to assemble into symmetric line, triangle, quadrangle, and tetragonal pyramidal Pty blocks, respectively. For the Au-doped Pt clusters, with larger values of y > 5, the structures are more relaxed and the d electrons of Pt atoms become delocalized over more centers, leading to lower symmetry structures. A certain aromaticity arising from delocalization of d electrons over the multi-center framework in the doped Pt clusters contributes to their stability, with Pt102+ at y = 10 exhibiting the highest stability. While the ground electronic state of the neutral platinum atom [Xe]. 4f145d96s1 leads to a triplet state (3D3), the total magnetic moments of AuxPty2+ are large increasing steadily from 0 to 10 μB and primarily located on Pt atoms, corresponding to the increase of the number of Pt atoms from 0 to 10 and significantly enhancing the magnetic moments. An admixture of both Au and Pt atoms thus emerges as an elegant way of keeping a small pyramidal structure but bringing in a high and controllable magnetic moment.

Gold-Catalyzed Divergent N/O-Vinylations of trans-2-Butene-1,4-amino Alcohols with Alkynes and the Cascade Rearrangements/Cyclizations to Dihydropyrroles and Dihydrofurans

Although the transition-metal-catalyzed vinylations of amines and alcohols via the additions to alkynes have been well developed, the selective vinylations of amino alcohols have been merely investigated. Herein, we report the gold-catalyzed divergent additions of trans-2-butene-1,4-amino alcohols' N-H and O-H groups to alkynes. The allyl enamine and allyl vinyl ether adducts then underwent a cascade (Aza-) Claisen rearrangement/cyclization sequence, furnishing the functionalized dihydropyrrole and dihydrofuran products.

The Au12 Gold Cluster: Preference for a Non-Planar Structure

The transition point from a two-dimensional (2D) to a three-dimensional (3D) structure in a series of small gold clusters remains a topic of continuing debate. In the present study, coupled-cluster CCSD(T) and DFT calculations are performed to re-examine the relative energies of several low-lying isomers of Au12, aiming to shed new light on this issue. At odds with many previous reports on the preference of a planar di-capped elongated-hexagon structure, the Au12 size is found to energetically prefer a globular cup-like form with C2v symmetry. While DFT results are not able to assign the most stable form of Au12 as the relative energies between the lowest-lying isomers are strongly functional-dependent, coupled-cluster theory calculations point out the preference of a 3D structure for having a D3h symmetry. Such a prediction is further supported by a comparison of the vibrational spectra computed using the revTPSS density functional with the available experimental infrared ones that were previously recorded from the far-IR multiple photon dissociation (FIR-MPD) experiment.

Unexpected structures of the Au17 gold cluster: the stars are shining

The Au₁₇ gold cluster was experimentally produced in the gas phase and characterized by its vibrational spectrum recorded using far-IR multiple photon dissociation (FIR-MPD) of Au₁₇Kr. DFT and coupled-cluster theory PNO-LCCSD(T)-F12 computations reveal that, at odds with most previous reports, Au₁₇ prefers two star-like forms derived from a pentaprism added by two extra Au atoms on both top and bottom surfaces of the pentaprism, along with five other Au atoms each attached on a lateral face. A good agreement between calculated and FIR-MPD spectra indicates a predominant presence of these star-like isomers. Stabilization of a star form arises from strong orbital interactions of an Au₁₂ core with a five-Au-atom string.

The lowest-energy structure of the gold cluster Au10: planar vs. nonplanar?

The onset of the transition from 2D to 3D structures in pure gold clusters remains a matter of continuing debate. In this theoretical study we revisit several planar and non-planar structural motifs of the size Au₁₀ with the aim to clarify this issue. Computations using a long-range corrected exchange-correlation functional LC-BLYP, coupled-cluster theories CCSD(T) and PNO-LCCSD(T)-F12 reveal that, at variance with previous reports on the preference of a planar elongated hexagon, both planar and nonplanar isomers of the neutral Au₁₀ are energetically degenerated up to 300 K. Its 3D equilibrium geometry is a core-shell structure which can be built up from a trigonal prism by capping four extra Au atoms outside. A comparison to the available experimental vibrational spectra allows us to argue that both lowest-lying 2D and 3D isomers of Au₁₀ likely coexist in the molecular beam during measurement of its FIR spectra. This result also suggests that the 2D-3D transition of neutral gold clusters occurs at the size Au₁₀.

Transition Metal-Catalyzed Hydroalkoxylation of Alkynes: An Overview

Oxygen-bearing motifs, mainly the congener heterocycles are ubiquitous due to their presence in various natural products and bioactive scaffolds. Although in literature, several strategies have been developed for their synthesis, hydroalkoxylation of alkynes has come forward as a method of choice and has been used extensively. In particular, hydroalkoxylation of alkynes has gained enormous attention from the synthetic community due to the rapid access to a very useful and reactive synthetic intermediate like 'enol ether'. Furthermore, to manifold the utility of these methods, reports have been developed elaborating the generation of 'enol ether' using hydroalkoxylation and their usage in various reactions in cascade or tandem manner. This review focuses on recent development on the hydroalkoxylation of alkynes for the synthesis of oxygen-containing entities.

Gold N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysts for the Hydrofluorination of Alkynes Using Hydrofluoric Acid: Reaction Scope, Mechanistic Studies and the Tracking of Elusive Intermediates

An efficient and chemoselective methodology deploying gold-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes as catalysts in the hydrofluorination of terminal alkynes using aqueous HF has been developed. Mechanistic studies shed light on an in situ generated catalyst, formed by the reaction of Brønsted basic gold pre-catalysts with HF in water, which exhibits the highest reactivity and chemoselectivity. The catalytic system has a wide alkyl substituted-substrate scope, and stoichiometric as well as catalytic reactions with tailor-designed gold pre-catalysts enable the identification of various gold species involved along the catalytic cycle. Computational studies aid in understanding the chemoselectivity observed through examination of key mechanistic steps for phosphine- and NHC-coordinated gold species bearing the triflate counterion and the elusive key complex bearing a bifluoride counterion.

Modular ketal-linked prodrugs and biomaterials enabled by organocatalytic transisopropenylation of alcohols

Isopropenyl ethers are critical intermediates for accessing medicinally valuable ketal-based prodrugs and biomaterials, but traditional approaches for the synthesis of isopropenyl ethers suffer from poor functional group compatibility and harsh reaction conditions. Here, we develop an organocatalytic transisopropenylation approach to solve these challenges, enabling the synthesis of isopropenyl ethers from various hydroxyl-group-containing small-molecule drugs, polymers, and functional building blocks. The method provides a straightforward and versatile synthesis of isopropenyl ethers, features excellent tolerance of diverse functional groups, applies to a wide range of substrates, and allows scalable synthesis. The development of this organocatalytic transisopropenylation approach enables access to modular preparation of various acid-sensitive ketal-linked prodrugs and functionalized ketalated biomaterials. We expect our syntheses and transformations of isopropenyl ethers will find utility in several diverse fields, including medicinal chemistry, drug delivery, and biomaterials.

Optimizing Catalyst and Reaction Conditions in Gold(I) Catalysis-Ligand Development

This review considers phosphine and N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of gold(I) that are used as (pre)catalysts for a range of reactions in organic synthesis. These are divided according to the structure of the ligand, with the narrative focusing on studies that offer a quantitative comparison between the ligands and readily available or widely used existing systems.

Alkyl Enol Ethers: Development in Intermolecular Organic Transformation

Alkyl enol ethers (AEE) are versatile synthetic intermediates with a unique reactivity pattern. This review article summarizes the synthesis of AEE as well as its reactivity and how enol ether undergoes intermolecular reactions for various bond formation, leading to the construction of several useful organic molecules. The synthetic applications of alkyl enol ethers towards intermolecular bond-forming reactions include metal-catalyzed reactions, cycloaddition and heterocycle formation as well as rwactions in the field of natural products synthesis. The achievement of these impressive transformations prove the countless synthetic potential of AEE. The main objective of this review is to bring attentiveness among synthetic chemists to show how AEE extensively can be used to react with both electrophiles as well as nucleophiles, thereby behaving as an ambiphilic reactant. We trust that the unique reactivity pattern of alkyl enol ethers and the fundamental mechanistic idea can attract chemists in AEE chemistry. Exclusively, intermolecular reactions of AEE with other functionalized moieties have not been reviewed to the best of our knowledge.

Synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene gold(I) complexes

N-heterocyclic carbene gold(I) chloride and hydroxide complexes are regularly used as synthons to access various oxygen-, nitrogen- or carbon-bound gold complexes. They are also widely employed as efficient catalysts in addition reactions of hydroelements to unsaturated bonds and in several rearrangement and decarboxylation protocols. Here we describe the multigram synthesis of the most common mononuclear N-heterocyclic carbene gold(I) chloride complexes bearing the N,N'-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IMes), N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr) and N,N'-bis(2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-methylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr*) ligands. Their synthesis is achieved through the straightforward and practical weak base approach in a total time of 4-5 h. This straightforward methodology is conducted under air and possesses considerable advantages over alternative routes, such as the use of a sustainable reaction solvent, minimal amounts of a mild base and commercially available or easily obtained starting materials. Additionally, we describe the synthesis of the mononuclear gold(I) hydroxide complex bearing the IPr ligand, using the state-of-the-art method requiring 24 h. Finally, the improved synthesis of the dinuclear gold(I) hydroxide complex [{Au(IPr)}₂(μ-OH)][BF₄] is described (~3 h). All procedures can be performed by researchers with standard training and lead to high yields (76-99%) of microanalytically pure bench-stable materials.

Probing the structural, electronic, and adsorptive properties of Au16O2- clusters

Great progress has been made in O₂ adsorption on gold clusters. However, systematic investigations of O₂ adsorption on [Formula: see text] clusters have not been reported. Here, we present a systematic study of the structural, electronic, and adsorptive properties of [Formula: see text] clusters by density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled with stochastic kicking method. Global minimum searches for [Formula: see text] reveal that exohedral derivatives are more favored. Furthermore, the obtained ground-state structure exhibits significant stability, as judged by its larger adsorption energy (1.16 eV) and a larger HOMO-LUMO gap (0.57 eV). The simulated photoelectron spectra (PES) of [Formula: see text] isomers will be instructive to identify the structures in future experiments. There are three interesting discoveries in the present paper: (1) O₂ undergoes chemical adsorption onto the parent [Formula: see text] clusters, but the amount of the adsorption energy is related to the parent [Formula: see text] clusters; (2) the process that O₂ undergoes dissociative adsorption onto the parent [Formula: see text] clusters is exothermic; (3) [Formula: see text] isomers show smaller X-A energy gaps than those of parent [Formula: see text] clusters, reflecting that their geometric and electronic structures are distorted remarkably due to dissociative adsorption of O₂.

Gold-Catalyzed Intermolecular Alkyne Hydrofunctionalizations—Mechanistic Insights

An overview of the current state of mechanistic understanding of gold-catalyzed intermolecular alkyne hydrofunctionalization reactions is presented. Moving from the analysis of the main features of the by-now-generally accepted reaction mechanism, studies and evidences pointing out the mechanistic peculiarities of these reactions using different nucleophiles HNu that add to the alkyne triple bond are presented and discussed. The effects of the nature of the employed alkyne substrate and of the gold catalyst (employed ligands, counteranions, gold oxidation state), of additional additives and of the reaction conditions are also considered. Aim of this work is to provide the reader with a detailed mechanistic knowledge of this important reaction class, which will be invaluable for rapidly developing and optimizing synthetic protocols involving a gold-catalyzed alkyne hydrofunctionalization as a reaction step.

Synthesis of Fulvene Vinyl Ethers by Gold Catalysis

Gold-catalyzed cyclization of 1,5-diynes with ketones as reagents and solvent provides diversely substituted vinyl ethers under mild conditions. The regioselectivity of such gold-catalyzed cyclizations is usually controlled by the scaffold of the diyne. Herein, we report the first solvent-controlled switching of regioselectivity from a 6-endo-dig- to 5-endo-dig-cyclization in these transformations, providing fulvene derivatives. With respect to the functional-group tolerance, aryl fluorides, chlorides, bromides, and ethers are tolerated. Furthermore, the mechanism and selectivity are put to scrutiny by experimental studies and a thermodynamic analysis of the product. Additionally, 6-(vinyloxy)fulvenes are a hitherto unknown class of compounds. Their reactivity is briefly evaluated, to give insights into their potential applications.

Synthesis, reactivity and catalytic activity of Au-PAd3 complexes

Novel Au-PAd₃ complexes have been synthesized from the known [Au(PAd₃)Cl]. A number of derivatives were deployed as catalysts and compared with NHC and tertiary phosphine congeners.

Dinuclear gold(i) complexes: from bonding to applications

The last two decades have seen a veritable explosion in the use of gold(i) complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and phosphine (PR₃) ligands.

Hydroalkoxylation of Terminal and Internal Alkynes Catalyzed by Dinuclear Gold(I) Complexes with Bridging Di(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Ligands

A series of six dinuclear gold(I) complexes with bridging bidentate N-heterocycic carbene ligands (NHCs) of general formula Au2Br2LX (L = diNHC, X = 1–6) have been studied as catalysts in the intermolecular hydroalkoxylation of terminal and internal alkynes. The best catalytic results have been obtained by using Au2Br2L4, characterized by 2,6-diisopropylphenyl wingtip substituents and a methylene bridging group between the two NHC donors. Complex Au2Br2L4 has been structurally characterized for the first time in this work, showing the presence of intramolecular aurophiclic interaction in the solid state. In the adopted reaction conditions Au2Br2L4 is able to convert challenging substrates such as diphenylacetylene. Comparative catalytic tests by using the mononuclear gold(I) complexes AuIL7 and IPrAuCl have been performed in order to determine the possible presence of cooperative effects in the catalytic process.

Gold-Catalyzed Hydroalkoxylation/Povarov Reaction Cascade of Alkynols with N-Aryl Imines: Synthesis of Tetrahydroquinolines

A one-pot gold-catalyzed hydroalkoxylation/Povarov reaction cascade of alkynols with N-aryl imines or in situ generated iminium has been developed. The protocol provides a facile access to a series of fused tricyclic tetrahydroquinolines with a broad substrate scope using readily available materials under mild conditions. The unique mechanistic feature is the dual function of the gold catalyst, which first catalyzed the intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of alkynols, and upon the formation of dihydrofuran species, promoted the following Povarov reaction with high stereoselectivity.

Gold-Catalyzed Hydrophenoxylation of Propargylic Alcohols and Amines: Synthesis of Phenyl Enol Ethers

A practical method for the synthesis of phenyl enol ethers is reported. The combination of a gold(I) catalyst and potassium carbonate selectively mediates the addition of phenols to propargylic alcohols/amines in a chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective fashion in high yield. The resulting enol ethers are formed exclusively with a Z-configuration and can be obtained from a wide array of phenols and propargylic alcohols or amines with the reaction showing excellent functional group tolerance.

A convergent synthesis of vinyloxyimidazopyridine via Cu(i)-catalyzed three-component coupling

The synthesis of vinyloxyimidazopyridine with complete regio- and stereoselectivity has been achieved by the Cu(i)-catalyzed three-component coupling of 2-aminopyridine, 2-oxoaldehyde and alkyne. This protocol is operationally very simple and has much potential for the synthesis of heteroarylated vinyl ethers from basic chemicals. Steroidal imidazopyridinyl vinyl ether was obtained successfully from ethynylestradiol.

Quantifying electronic similarities between NHC–gold(i) complexes and their isolobal imidazolium precursors

Gold(i) catalysed regio- and stereoselective intermolecular hydroamination of internal alkynes: towards functionalised azoles

Vinyl- and saturated azoles were synthesised through gold(i) catalysed regio- and stereoselective intermolecular hydroamination of internal alkynes and subsequent hydrogenation.

Silver-Catalyzed Olefination of Acetals and Ketals with Diazoesters to β-Alkoxyacrylates

The first silver-catalyzed reaction of acetals or ketals with diazoesters leading to trisubstituted or tetrasubstituted β-alkoxyacrylates is now reported. A broad range of acetals and ketals bearing different substituents is compatible with this protocol and thus provides an attractive approach for the synthesis of complex β-alkoxyacrylates. The power of this method was further demonstrated by the successful synthesis of picoxystrobin, which is one of the most popular agricultural fungicides commercialized by Dupont.

Stabilization of golden cages by encapsulation of a single transition metal atom

Golden cage-doped nanoclusters have attracted great attention in the past decade due to their remarkable electronic, optical and catalytic properties. However, the structures of large golden cage doped with Mo and Tc are still not well known because of the challenges in global structural searches. Here, we report anionic and neutral golden cage doped with a transition metal atom MAu16 (M = Mo and Tc) using Saunders 'Kick' stochastic automation search method associated with density-functional theory (DFT) calculation (SK-DFT). The geometric structures and electronic properties of the doped clusters, MAu16q (M = Mo and Tc; q = 0 and -1), are investigated by means of DFT theoretical calculations. Our calculations confirm that the 4d transition metals Mo and Tc can be stably encapsulated in the Au16- cage, forming three different configurations, i.e. endohedral cages, planar structures and exohedral derivatives. The ground-state structures of endohedral cages C2v Mo@Au16--(a) and C1 Tc@Au16--(b) exhibit a marked stability, as judged by their high binding energy per atom (greater than 2.46 eV), doping energy (0.29 eV) as well as a large HOMO-LUMO gap (greater than 0.40 eV). The predicted photoelectron spectra should aid in future experimental characterization of MAu16- (M = Mo and Tc).

Gold(III) NHC Complexes for Catalyzing Dihydroalkoxylation and Hydroamination Reactions

A gold(III) complex of an N-heterocyclic carbene based hemilabile ligand with two pendant pyrazole arms (1,3-bis((1H-pyrazol-3-yl)methyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazole, LH) was synthesized. Complex [LAu(III)Cl₃] is an excellent catalyst for promoting dihydroalkoxylation at room temperature, even catalyzing this reaction at 0 °C. [LAu(III)Cl₃] is one of the most efficient catalysts reported to date for the spirocyclization of alkynyl diols. Furthermore, [LAu(III)Cl₃] catalyzed intra- and intermolecular hydroamination reactions, achieving good to excellent conversions. [LAu(III)Cl₃] is a more efficient catalyst than a gold(I) analogue, [LAu(I)Cl]. The dependence of the quantity of weakly coordinating anion [BAr^F₄]^- ((3,5-trifluoromethyl)phenyl borate) present on catalysis efficiency was probed for the dihydroalkoxylation reaction. X-ray diffraction analysis of single crystals demonstrated the solid-state structure of gold complexes [LAu(III)Cl₃] and [LAu(I)Cl], which displayed the expected square-planar and linear coordination geometries, respectively.
