Abstract
Thermal rate coefficients and kinetic isotope effects have been calculated for an important atmospheric reaction H/D + O3 → OH/OD + O2 based on an accurate permutation invariant polynomial-neural network potential energy surface, using ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD), quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) and variational transition-state theory (VTST) with multidimensional tunneling. The RPMD approach yielded results that are generally in better agreement with experimental rate coefficients than the VTST and QCT ones, especially at low temperatures, attributable to its capacity to capture quantum effects such as tunneling and zero-point energy. The theoretical results support one group of existing experiments over the other. In addition, rate coefficients for the D + O3 → OD + O2 reaction are also reported using the same methods, which will allow a stringent assessment of future experimental measurements, thus helping to reduce the uncertainty in the recommended rate coefficients of this reaction.

Abstract
Since there is no exact solution for problems in physics and chemistry, extrapolation methods may assume a key role in quantitative quantum chemistry. Two topics where it bears considerable impact are addressed, both at the heart of computational quantum chemistry: electronic structure and reaction dynamics. In the first, the problem of extrapolating the energy obtained by solving the electronic Schrödinger equation to the limit of the complete one-electron basis set is addressed. With the uniform-singlet-and-triplet-extrapolation (USTE) scheme at the focal point, the emphasis is on recent updates covering from the energy itself to other molecular properties. The second topic refers to extrapolation of quantum mechanical reactive scattering probabilities from zero total angular momentum to any of the values that it may assume when running quasiclassical trajectories, QCT/QM-[Formula: see text]J. With the extrapolation guided in both cases by physically motivated asymptotic theories, realism is seeked by avoiding unsecure jumps into the unknown. Although, mostly review oriented, a few issues are addressed for the first time here and there. Prospects for future work conclude the overview.

Abstract
The hydridotrioxygen (HO3) radical has been investigated in many previous theoretical and experimental studies over several decades, originally because of its possible relevance to the tropospheric HOx cycle but more recently because of its fascinating chemical bonding, geometric structure, and vibrational dynamics. We have executed new, comprehensive research on this vexing molecule via focal point analyses (FPA) to approach the ab initio limit of optimized geometric structures, relative energies, complete quartic force fields, and the entire reaction path for cis-trans isomerization. High-order coupled cluster theory was applied through the CCSDT(Q) and even CCSDTQ(P) levels, and CBS extrapolations were performed using cc-pVXZ (X = 2-6) basis sets. The cis isomer proves to be higher than trans by 0.52 kcal mol-1, but this energetic ordering is achieved only after the CCSDT(Q) milestone is reached; the barrier for cis → trans isomerization is a minute 0.27 kcal mol-1. The FPA central re(O-O) bond length of trans-HO3 is astonishingly long (1.670 Å), consistent with the semiexperimental re distance we extracted from microwave rotational constants of 10 isotopologues using FPA vibration-rotation interaction constants (αi). The D0(HO-O2) dissociation energy converges to a mere 2.80 ± 0.25 kcal mol-1. Contrary to expectation for such a weakly bound system, vibrational perturbation theory performs remarkably well with the FPA anharmonic force fields, even for the torsional fundamental near 130 cm-1. Exact numerical procedures are applied to the potential energy function for the torsional reaction path to obtain energy levels, tunneling rates, and radiative lifetimes. The cis → trans isomerization occurs via tunneling with an inherent half-life of 1.4 × 10-11 s and 8.6 × 10-10 s for HO3 and DO3, respectively, thus resolving the mystery of why the cis species has not been observed in previous experiments executed in dissipative environments that allow collisional cooling of the trans-HO3 product. In contrast, the pure ground eigenstate of the cis species in a vacuum is predicted to have a spontaneous radiative lifetime of about 1 h and 5 days for HO3 and DO3, respectively.

Abstract
The Hartree-Fock (HF) energy is shown to be extrapolatable from subminimal, minimal, and extended basis sets. Unprecedentedly, it can be reliably extrapolated to the complete basis set limit (CBS) from as small as Pople's STO-2G up to the largest aug-cc-pVXZ basis sets of Dunning's correlation-consistent type and even more complete variants of such ansatzes. The approach is tested on a panoply of small, medium and large molecular systems. As a case study, extrapolation is shown to be particularly reliable and cost-effective (typically an order of magnitude more economical for similar accuracy) when employing a hybrid (STO-2G,extended) basis set pair. The additional cost relative to a single-point calculation with the extended basis set is of no significance. After training the novel scheme with a meager set of 18 systems (TS-18), four test sets covering from neutrals (TS-105) to neutrals plus cations (TS-26) and anions (TS-17), these involving up to third-row elements, as well as tetrapeptide conformers (TS-10) were utilized for its validation. Although the answer to the question of whether all basis sets converge to the same HF/CBS limit is a clear yes, that of whether they show the same convergence rate is open, an issue also examined in the present work. For systems involving atoms up to the second-row of the periodic table the answer seems to be a clear yes, at least when using correlation-consistent basis sets, but it is shown to be a no when the study is extended to anionic systems containing third-row elements. For the latter, augmented correlation consistent basis sets display a faster, perhaps optimal, convergence rate. The implications of this in practice can hardly be anticipated. For example, it cannot be predicted a priori which of such basis sets will yield the best relative energies for those anions, although a logical expectation suggests it to be the augmented ones which turn out to display the fastest convergence. As a blind-test type illustration, the novel scheme is applied to the conformational analysis of 2 tetrapeptides with 5 conformers each, using from subminimal up to extended basis sets as large as cc-pV5Z and aug-cc-pVQZ. The (STO-2G,extended) results so obtained are predicted to be in very good agreement with the best data reported thus far.

Abstract
The major aspects of the C2, C3 and C4 elemental carbon clusters are surveyed. For C2, a brief analysis of its current status is presented. Regarding C3, the most recent results obtained in our group are reviewed with emphasis on modelling its potential energy surface which is particularly complicated due to the presence of multiple conical intersections. As for C4, the most stable isomeric forms of both triplet and singlet spin states and their possible interconversion pathways are examined afresh by means of accurate ab initio calculations. The main strategies for modelling the ground triplet C4 potential are also discussed. Starting from a truncated cluster expansion and a previously reported DMBE form for C3, an approximate four-body term is calibrated from the ab initio energies. The final six-dimensional global DMBE form so obtained reproduces all known topographical aspects while providing an accurate description of the C4 linear-rhombic isomerization pathway. It is therefore commended for both spectroscopic and reaction dynamics studies. This article is part of the theme issue 'Modern theoretical chemistry'.

Abstract
Because the one-electron basis set limit is difficult to reach in correlated post-Hartree-Fock ab initio calculations, the low-cost route of using methods that extrapolate to the estimated basis set limit attracts immediate interest. The situation is somewhat more satisfactory at the Hartree-Fock level because numerical calculation of the energy is often affordable at nearly converged basis set levels. Still, extrapolation schemes for the Hartree-Fock energy are addressed here, although the focus is on the more slowly convergent and computationally demanding correlation energy. Because they are frequently based on the gold-standard coupled-cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)], correlated calculations are often affordable only with the smallest basis sets, and hence single-level extrapolations from one raw energy could attain maximum usefulness. This possibility is examined. Whenever possible, this review uses raw data from second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory, as well as CCSD, CCSD(T), and multireference configuration interaction methods. Inescapably, the emphasis is on work done by the author's research group. Certain issues in need of further research or review are pinpointed.

Abstract
We have compiled gas phase enthalpies of formation for nine hydrogen-oxygen species (HxOy) and selected recommended values for H, O, OH, H2O, HO2, H2O2, O3, HO3, and H2O3. The compilation consists of values derived from experimental measurements, quantum chemical calculations, and prior evaluations. This work updates the recommended values in the NIST-JANAF (1985) and Gurvich et al. (1989) thermochemical tables for seven species. For two species, HO3 and H2O3 (important in atmospheric chemistry) and not found in prior thermochemical evaluations, we also provide supplementary data consisting of molecular geometries, vibrational frequencies, and torsional potentials which can be used to compute thermochemical functions. For all species, we also provide supplementary data consisting of zero point energies, vibrational frequencies, and ion reaction energetics.

Abstract
The emergence of chemical complexity during star and planet formation is largely guided by the chemistry of unstable molecules that are reaction intermediates in terrestrial chemistry. Our knowledge of these intermediates is limited by both the lack of laboratory studies and the difficulty in their astronomical detection. In this work, we focus on the weakly bound cluster HO3 as an example of the connection between laboratory spectroscopic study and astronomical observations. Here, we present a fast-sweep spectroscopic technique in the millimeter and submillimeter range to facilitate the laboratory search for trans-HO3 and DO3 transitions in a discharge supersonic jet and report their rotational spectra from 70 to 450 GHz. These new measurements enable full determination of the molecular constants of HO3 and DO3. We also present a preliminary search for trans-HO3 in 32 star-forming regions using this new spectroscopic information. HO3 is not detected, and column density upper limits are reported. This work provides additional benchmark information for computational studies of this intriguing radical, as well as a reliable set of molecular constants for extrapolation of the transition frequencies of HO3 for future astronomical observations.

Abstract
First generation product yields from the OH-initiated oxidation of methyl vinyl ketone (3-buten-2-one, MVK) under both low and high NO conditions are reported. In the low NO chemistry, three distinct reaction channels are identified leading to the formation of (1) OH, glycolaldehyde, and acetyl peroxy R2a , (2) a hydroperoxide R2b , and (3) an α-diketone R2c . The α-diketone likely results from HOx-neutral chemistry previously only known to occur in reactions of HO2 with halogenated peroxy radicals. Quantum chemical calculations demonstrate that all channels are kinetically accessible at 298 K. In the high NO chemistry, glycolaldehyde is produced with a yield of 74 ± 6.0%. Two alkyl nitrates are formed with a combined yield of 4.0 ± 0.6%. We revise a three-dimensional chemical transport model to assess what impact these modifications in the MVK mechanism have on simulations of atmospheric oxidative chemistry. The calculated OH mixing ratio over the Amazon increases by 6%, suggesting that the low NO chemistry makes a non-negligible contribution toward sustaining the atmospheric radical pool.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) reacts with hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the gas phase to produce nitrous acid, HONO, but essentially nothing is known about the isomeric nitrosyl-O-hydroxide (HOON), owing to its perceived instability. We report the detection of gas-phase HOON in a supersonic molecular beam by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and a precise determination of its molecular structure by further spectroscopic analysis of its (2)H, (15)N, and (18)O isotopologs. HOON contains the longest O-O bond in any known molecule (1.9149 ± 0.0005 Å) and appears surprisingly stable, with an abundance roughly 3% that of HONO in our experiments.

Abstract
The two lowest singlet potential energy surfaces of the hydrazoic acid are explored using high-level quantum chemistry calculations, revealing isomeric forms, transition states, and a new path for the nitrogen ring-closing mechanism in the ground state. The reaction of cyc-N3 with hydrogen is shown to proceed through a barrierless path that dissociates to N2 + NH((1)Δ) without reaching the HN3 global minimum. Several intersections between the two states are localized for both N3 isomers near the N3 + H dissociation. The energies of stationary structures and dissociation asymptotes are obtained with the multireference configuration interaction method at the complete basis set limit. A comparison with recent experimental data regarding the H-N3 bond strength and the dissociation barrier in the excited state shows that the present results are of chemical accuracy (~1 kcal mol(-1)).
