Mechanisms and influential factors of soil chromium long-term stability by an accelerated aging system after chemical stabilization

Chemical stabilization is one of the most widely used remediation strategies for chromium (Cr)-contaminated soils by reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and its performance is affected by human and natural processes in a prolonged period, challenging long-term Cr stability. In this work, we established a method for evaluating the long-term effectiveness of remediation of Cr-contaminated soils, and developed an accelerated aging system to simultaneously simulate acid rain leaching and freeze-thaw cycles. The mechanisms and influencing factors of long-term (50-year) change in soil Cr speciation were unravelled after stabilization with Metafix®. Chemical stabilization remarkably decreased the contents of Cr(VI)soil, Crtotal-leach and Cr(VI)leach, among which the removal rate of Cr(VI) in soil was up to 89.70 %, but it also aggravated soil Cr instability. During the accelerated aging process, Crtotal-leach change rates in chemically stabilized soil samples were 0.0462-0.0587 mg/(L·a), and soil Cr became instable after 20-year accelerated aging. The proportion of Cr bound to organic matter and residual Cr increased in soil, and exchangeable Cr decreased. Linear combination fitting results of XANES also showed that Cr(VI) and Cr3+ were transformed into OM-Cr(III), Fh-Cr(III) and CrFeO3 after restoration. During the accelerated aging process, acid rain leaching activated Cr(III) and dissolved Cr(VI), whereas freeze-thaw cycle mainly affected OM-Cr. Chemical stabilization, acid rain leaching and aging time were the major factors influencing the stability of soil Cr, and the freeze-thaw cycle promoted the influence of acid rain leaching. This study provided a new way to explore the long-term effectiveness and instability mechanisms at Cr-contaminated site after chemical stabilization.

A "turn off-on" fluorescent sensor for detection of Cr(Ⅵ) based on upconversion nanoparticles and nanoporphyrin

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(Ⅵ)) is a significant environmental pollutant because of its toxic and carcinogenic properties and wide use in various industries. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop accurate and selective approaches to detect the concentration of Cr(Ⅵ) in agricultural and aquaculture products to help humans avoid potential hazards of indirectly taking in Cr(Ⅵ). In this work, we report a "turn off-on" fluorescent sensor based on citric acid coated, 808 nm-excited core-shell upconversion nanoparticles (CA-UCNPs) and self-assembled copper porphyrin nanoparticles (nano CuTPyP) for sensitive and specific detection of Cr(Ⅵ). Nano copper 5, 10, 15, 20-tetra(4-pyridyl)-21H-23H- porphine obtained by acid-base neutralization micelle-confined self-assembly method function as an effective quencher due to its excellent optical property and water solubility. Through electrostatic interactions, positively charged nano CuTPyP are attracted to the surface of negatively charged CA-UCNPs, which can almost completely quench the fluorescence emission. In the presence of Cr(Ⅵ), nano CuTPyP can discriminatively interact with Cr(Ⅵ) and form nano CuTPyP/Cr(Ⅵ) complex, which separates nano CuTPyP from CA-UCNPs and restores the fluorescence. The sensing system exhibits a good linear response to Cr(Ⅵ) concentration in the range from 0.5 to 400 µM with a detection limit of 0.36 µM. The sensing method also displays high selectivity against other common ions including trivalent chromium and is applied to the analysis of Cr(Ⅵ) in actual rice and fish samples with satisfactory results.

A Luminescent Cd-MOF Used as a Chemosensor for High-Efficiency Sensing of Fe3+, Cr(IV), Trinitrophenol, and Colchicine

A Cd-MOF was constructed based on 3,5-bis(4-carboxyphenyl) pyridine under solvothermal conditions. Its structure and phase purity were verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Thereafter, some studies on the morphology, structure, and luminescent properties of the compound were carried out. The compound exhibited a highly sensitive response to Fe3+, Cr(IV), trinitrophenol (TNP), and colchicine based on the fluorescence-quenching mechanism. The possible mechanism of luminescence quenching was discussed in detail.

Aluminum-Porphyrin Metal-Organic Frameworks for Visible-Light Photocatalytic and Sonophotocatalytic Cr(VI) Reduction

In this study, four isostructural aluminum-based porphyrin metal-organic frameworks [Al-TCPP(M), M = H2 and Zn] with different morphologies and sizes were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. By adjusting the hydrothermal reaction time and the types of porphyrin ligands, Al-TCPP(M) MOFs exhibited diverse morphologies including tetragonal, rectangular, and carambola-like phase. In view of the introduction of porphyrin ligands and the strong coordination effect of Al-O units, Al-TCPP(M) MOFs exhibited good chemical stability, broad visible light harvesting capability, and fast photogenerated charge response. Four Al-TCPP(M) MOFs exhibited excellent photocatalytic activities for Cr(VI) in aqueous solution. Notably, the regulation to the nanoscale carambola-like morphology of Al-TCPP MOFs and metallization of the porphyrin ligand promoted the Cr(VI) photoreduction reaction where the catalytic activity of metallic carambola-like Al-TCPP increased 1.7 times compared to that of nonmetallic tetragonal MOFs. With the assistance of sonophotocatalysis, the Cr(VI) average reduction rates reached 0.658, 0.542, 0.785, and 0.629 mg·L-1·min-1 for Al-TCPP(H2)-24h, Al-TCPP(H2)-72h, Al-TCPP(Zn)-24h, and Al-TCPP(Zn)-72h, which are 1.2-1.4 times higher than that of photocatalysis. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, electronic spin resonance, and fluorescence spectroscopy experiments demonstrated that the synergistic effect of photochemistry and sonochemistry promoted the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Al-TCPP(M) to Cr(VI), thus enhancing the catalytic activity. The combination of the sonophotocatalytic technology with aluminum-porphyrin MOFs may become an effective strategy to improve MOF-based photocatalytic systems.

The composite of bismuth oxyiodide-bismuth/nitrogen-doped carbon for photoreduction and electrochemical/photoelectrochemical dual-model sensing of Cr(VI)

A porous bismuth oxyiodide-metal bismuth/nitrogen-doped carbon (BiOI-Bi/N-C) composite composed of BiOI nanosheets, N-C sheets, and metallic Bi nanoparticles was prepared. BiOI-Bi/N-C exhibited remarkable cathodic photoelectrochemical activity and rapid adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) ions. Interestingly, the photocatalytic process of BiOI-Bi/N-C toward Cr(VI) was pH dependent. Under acidic medium, the synthesized material displayed efficient photocatalysis and achieved 95.0% photoreduction efficacy for Cr(VI) ions to Cr³⁺ within 30 min under visible light irradiation. Under neutral medium, Cr(VI) state showed a different photocatalytic process, and Cr(OH)₃ as a product covered on BiOI-Bi/N-C, which decreased the electrochemical (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of BiOI-Bi/N-C. Based on the findings, BiOI-Bi/N-C was utilized as EC/PEC dual-model sensing interface for the detection of Cr(VI) ions. The presented dual-model sensing method displayed an ultralow limit of detection down to 6.8 pM for EC and 3.2 pM for PEC. It demonstrated the practical application potential for the assay of Cr(VI) in real samples.

Insights into the antioxidative mechanisms of melatonin in ameliorating chromium-induced oxidative stress-mediated hepatic and renal tissue injuries in male Wistar rats

Chromium (Cr), a hazardous heavy metal, is toxic to human health and the environment. Severe detrimental effects of Cr on different physiological systems involve oxidative stress. In the current study, sodium dichromate di-hydrate was subcutaneously injected to male Wistar rats at a dose of 5 mg/kg b.w. and experimented up to 14 days to induce alterations in hepatic and renal tissues. Another group of rats was pre-treated with melatonin at three different doses (5, 10, and 20 mg/kg b.w.; orally) and 20 mg/kg b.w. dose was evidenced to provide maximal protection against Cr-induced alterations. The study demonstrated that melatonin efficiently preserved body weight, organ weight, intracellular antioxidant enzymes, and tissue morphology. Furthermore, melatonin was also found to protect organ damage markers, oxidative stress-biomarkers, activities of pro-oxidant enzymes, levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), and collagen content through its antioxidative mechanisms. Moreover, melatonin effectively decreased tissue Cr content through its metal-chelating activity. Hence, the present study has established melatonin as a promising antioxidant for conserving the liver and kidney tissues from Cr-induced oxidative damage thereby strengthening the notion that this small indoleamine can act as a future therapeutic against Cr-induced oxidative stress-mediated tissue damage.

Partial Oxidation of FeS Nanoparticles Enhances Cr(VI) Sequestration

Iron sulfide nanoparticles (nano-FeS) have shown great potential for in situ remediation of Cr(VI) pollution by reducing Cr(VI) to the less soluble and toxic Cr(III). However, material oxidation that inevitably occurs during storage and application alters its reactivity. Herein, we show that partial oxidation of nanoparticulate mackinawite (FeS) significantly enhances its capability in sequestering Cr(VI). Oxidation of nano-FeS increases its binding affinity to Cr(VI), likely due to preferential inner-sphere complexation of Cr(VI) oxyanions to ferric over ferrous iron in mackinawite/lepidocrocite (FeS/γ-FeOOH) nanocomposites. A trade-off is that oxidation mitigates Cr(VI) reduction by lowering the electron-donating potential of the material and the electron transfer at a solution-material interface and consequently hinders the transformation of adsorbed Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Notably, the rate-limiting step of Cr(VI) sequestration transitions from adsorption to reduction during oxidation, as demonstrated with batch experiments coupled with kinetic modeling. Thus, an optimum oxidation degree exists, wherein the gain in the overall performance from enhanced adsorption overcompensates the loss from inhibited reduction, resulting in maximum sequestration of aqueous Cr(VI) as solid-phase Cr(III). Our findings inform better assessment and design of nanomaterials for Cr(VI) remediation and may be extended to interactions of other oxyanions with natural and engineered nanoparticles during oxidative aging.

Triphenylamine-containing imine-linked porous organic network for luminescent detection and adsorption of Cr(VI) in water

In this study, an imine-linked luminescent porous organic network (PON) has been successfully synthesized by the Schiff-base condensation reaction between 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine and tris(4-formylphenyl)amine. It exhibits strong fluorescence in an aqueous dispersion and can be applied as a luminescent probe for Cr(VI) (CrO₄^2- and Cr₂O₇^2-) with high selectivity and sensitivity (LOD for Cr₂O₇^2- and CrO₄^2- were below 0.35 μM and 0.4 μM, respectively) in a turn-off manner. The possible luminescence sensing mechanism and the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) are also discussed in detail.

Nanostructured Materials for Water Purification: Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions and Organic Dyes

Chemical water pollution poses a threat to human beings and ecological systems. The purification of water to remove toxic organic and inorganic pollutants is essential for a safe society and a clean environment. Adsorption-based water treatment is considered one of the most effective and economic technologies designed to remove toxic substances. In this article, we review the recent progress in the field of nanostructured materials used for water purification, particularly those used for the adsorption of heavy metal ions and organic dyes. This review includes a range of nanostructured materials such as metal-based nanoparticles, polymer-based nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials, bio-mass materials, and other types of nanostructured materials. Finally, the current challenges in the fields of adsorption of toxic materials using nanostructured materials are briefly discussed.

Visible-Light-Driven Sonophotocatalysis for the Rapid Reduction of Aqueous Cr(VI) Based on Zirconium-Porphyrin Metal-Organic Frameworks with csq Topology

Photochemical treatment of highly toxic Cr(VI) is a desirable and ecofriendly method to protect the environment and human beings. In this study, a MOF-based sonophotocatalytic system is established, in which visible-light-driven sonophotocatalytic reduction of toxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in water is investigated using zirconium-porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) structured as PCN-222(M) [M = H₂, Zn(II), Fe(III), Co(II)]. In the view of the synergistic effect of sonochemistry and photocatalysis, PCN-222(M) exhibited enhanced activities for Cr(VI) reduction compared with the photocatalytic process. Kinetic studies showed that apparent reaction rate constants in the sonophotocatalytic system of PCN-222(M) are 1.5-3.3 times higher than those in photocatalysis. Fluorescence and UV-vis absorption spectra measurements demonstrate that the sonophotocatalytic process promotes the transfer of photoinduced electrons from PCN-222(M) to Cr(VI), thus enhancing the catalytic performance. The innovative combination of porous MOFs and sonophotocatalytic technology might become a feasible strategy to improve the existing MOF-based photocatalytic systems.

Low-cost devices with fluorescence spots brightness and size dual-mode readout for the rapid detection of Cr(VI) based on smartphones

Sensitive, convenient and rapid detection devices for toxic Cr(VI) suitable for filed use are required. Smartphone can be used as the detector, but the quality of images taken with a smartphone may depend on the ambient light and the operator. In this work, two types of low-cost and portable smartphone-based devices used for fluorescence spots brightness and size dual-mode detection of Cr(VI) were constructed with the aid of the 3D printing, which avoids the effect of ambient light and maintains a fixed position of the phone camera relative to the samples. Based on the brightness reflected by the blue channel of RGB values of the images of carbon nanodots, a linear relationship between quenching efficiency and concentration of Cr(VI) in a range of 0.2-150 μM with a limit of detection of 0.058 μM was attained, which is comparable to or better than that from fluorescence spectrometers. With the size variation of fluorescence spots, a linear range of 10-350 μM was acquired and it is more intuitive for direct naked-eye estimation of the concentration of Cr(VI). The applicability of the proposed devices for the detection of Cr(VI) was verified with water and soil samples with recoveries ranging in 95.0-108.2%.

Intensity analysis of chromium cycling in south Jiangsu region of China

Suzhou (SZ), Wuxi (WX) and Changzhou (CZ) (collectively called the SXC area) in southern Jiangsu Province surround Tai Lake on three sides and have an important impact on its ecology. The emission and circulation of Cr in the three cities were quantified according to the six categories (including industry production, agricultural livestock, vehicle exhaust, solid waste, atmospheric subsidence and runoff) to analyze its regional characteristics and source category characteristics and to build a Cr cycle diagram to evaluate the pollution situation. The results showed that the Cr emissions from solid waste were the highest and mostly came from industrial sludge, accounting for 76.4% of the total circulation. The Cr emissions from SZ and WX were significantly higher than those of CZ, accounting for 47.0% and 42.9% of the regional total. The Cr in the excrement of pigs and poultry, dry sedimentation and surface runoff exceeded 100 tons every year, which needed to be valued. The Cr concentration in the surface water, soil and atmosphere in SXC area all met with the highest national standards. Studies have shown that the sediments and benthic organisms in the west and north of Tai Lake were already in a low-pollution state, but which was overall acceptable. Through this study, Cr circulation was clarified in typical areas, which was convenient for the monitoring and management of heavy metal pollution in the areas surrounding Tai Lake.

Rational synthesis of an ultra-stable Zn(ii) coordination polymer based on a new tripodal pyrazole ligand for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Fe3+ and Cr2O72- in aqueous media

A mixed-ligand strategy has been used to construct stable luminescent coordination polymers (CPs). An ultra-stable Zn(ii) coordination polymer, [Zn(H3tpb)(Hbtc)]n (1) was hydrothermally synthesized by employing a new tripodal pyrazole ligand H3tpb and a classical carboxylic ligand H3btc (H3tpb = 1,3,5-tris(pyrazolyl)benzene, H3btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid). Complex 1 exhibits a 2D sql network. Importantly, 1 not only possesses excellent thermal stability but also shows superior chemical stability in terms of water resistance, acid/base aqueous solutions tolerance (pH = 2-12), and organic solvents resistance. This excellent structural stability was further illustrated from the perspective of thermal decomposition kinetics. The luminescence properties were investigated, showing that complex 1 displays high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Fe3+ and Cr2O72- ions in aqueous solutions via luminescence quenching effects.

Progress in the Research of the Toxicity Effect Mechanisms of Heavy Metals on Freshwater Organisms and Their Water Quality Criteria in China

Water quality criteria are the scientific basis for formulating water quality standards and environmental management practices. Due to the development of urbanization and industrialization, the problem of heavy metal pollution has become a serious environmental problem. Heavy metals not only have major impacts on aquatic organisms, but also seriously threaten human health. However, the current environmental criteria refer to the maximum value limitations of environmental factors in environmental media where harmful or detrimental effects are not produced on specific protected objects. This study reviewed the sources, hazard levels, toxic effect mechanisms, and the current research status of China’s water quality criteria for heavy metal pollutants. In addition, the focus and direction of future research on the toxic effects of heavy metal on aquatic organisms and the necessary criteria changes were discussed. The present study would provide an important theoretical basis for the future research of water quality criteria and risk assessment of heavy metal pollutants.

Efficient Visual Chemosensor for Hexavalent Chromium via a Controlled Strategy for Signal Amplification in Water

Generally, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) cannot react with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in neutral pH or in water at room temperature and pressure. Herein, we found that hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) can trigger TMB reacting with H₂O₂ (TMB-H₂O₂) in ultrapure water along with a weak signal output. Then, to implement signal amplification effectively, we designed a ternary nanohybrid material containing graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), and hyperbranched polyethylenimine (PEI) to form rGO/PEI/Au nanohybrids via chemical bonding. After addition of a trace amount of Cr⁶⁺, rGO/PEI/Au nanohybrids can effectively catalyze TMB-H₂O₂ in ultrapure water; thus, a visual chemosensor and electronic spectrum quantitative analysis method for Cr⁶⁺ based on chromium-stimulated peroxidase mimetic activity of rGO/PEI/Au nanohybrids were established. The visual chemosensor exhibits excellent selectivity and interference immunity against 34 other interfering substances with a detection limit as low as 2.14 nM. The visual chemosensor for Cr⁶⁺ with a low detection limit and high selectivity is expected to have a potential application in environmental analysis, monitoring, and human health maintenance.

Evidence of Natural and Anthropogenic Impacts on Rainwater Trace Metal Geochemistry in Central Mexico: A Statistical Approach

Trace metals Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Zn, Cd, and As were determined on a monthly basis in a total of 52 rain samples collected from six different locations in the central region of Mexico during March 2016–April 2017. The average concentrations of trace metals (mg/L) in the rainwater samples showed an order of Zn (0.873) > Fe (0.395) > Mn (0.083) > Cr (0.041) ≥ Cu (0.041) > Pb (0.031) > Ni (0.020) > Co (0.013) > As (0.0003) > Cd (0.002). The differences observed in metal concentrations are related to variations in the influence of continental air masses, local transport, regional advection, and the solubility of trace metals. High concentrations of metals were observed in the months of March to May at all sites, probably due to the less extensive removal of air/air pollutants. The values obtained from the enrichment factor (EF) per metal showed relatively high values for Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, Co, Ni, and Cr, suggesting anthropogenic origin. Pearson’s correlation matrix validated the distribution of trace metal sources and their relationships with local/regional meteorological characteristics. This paper presents relevant basic information for the evaluation of the toxic potential of rainwater and the possible health risks when using this source of water for human consumption.

Cr2O72− inside Zr/Hf-based metal–organic frameworks: highly sensitive and selective detection and crystallographic evidence

The (4,8)-connected Zr/Hf-MOFs exhibit excellent performances in the detection of Cr₂O₇²⁻ and the exact location and configuration of Cr₂O₇²⁻ inside the MOFs were revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies for the first time.

Luminescent metal–organic framework-based phosphor for the detection of toxic oxoanions in an aqueous medium

Dual-Functionalized Fluorescent Cationic Organic Network: Highly Efficient Detection and Removal of Dichromate from Water

Dichromate is a widespread contaminant in wastewater, threatening the health of humans and other organisms. Therefore, effective detection and removal of dichromate from water is of great significance. Herein, a tetraphenylethylene functionalized cationic organic network (CON-LDU2) was constructed via a facile quaternization reaction. CON-LDU2 was successfully integrated with both detection and removal functionalities toward dichromate. On the one hand, benefiting from the strong fluorescence, CON-LDU2 was employed as a chemosensor, it could efficiently and selectively probe Cr₂O₇^2- in water with "turn-off" fluorescent response. On the other hand, the cationic skeleton and free anions inside framework make CON-LDU2 an excellent adsorbent for Cr₂O₇^2-, it could capture Cr₂O₇^2- from water with rapid kinetics and high capacity. The kinetic constant for adsorption of Cr₂O₇^2- can reach up to 1.784 g mg^-1 min^-1, while the capacity is determined as 325 mg g^-1. Furthermore, CON-LDU2 displayed good recyclability and can be reused for at least 5 cycles. Therefore, CON-LDU2 can serve as an ideal candidate not only in detection but also in removal of Cr₂O₇^2- in water medium.

A Water-Stable Terbium(III)-Organic Framework as a Chemosensor for Inorganic Ions, Nitro-Containing Compounds and Antibiotics in Aqueous Solutions

Effective detection of organic/inorganic pollutants, such as antibiotics, nitro-compounds, excessive Fe³⁺ and MnO₄ ^- , is crucial for human health and environmental protection. Here, a new terbium(III)-organic framework, namely [Tb(TATAB)(H₂ O)]⋅2H₂ O (Tb-MOF, H₃ TATAB=4,4',4''-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltri-m-aminobenzoic acid), was assembled and characterized. The Tb-MOF exhibits a water-stable 3D bnn framework. Due to the existence of competitive absorption, Tb-MOF has a high selectivity for detecting Fe³⁺ , MnO₄ ^- , 4-nirophenol and nitroimidazole (ronidazole, metronidazole, dimetridazole, ornidazole) in aqueous through luminescent quenching. The results suggest that Tb-MOF is a simple and reliable reagent with multiple sensor responses in practical applications. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first Tb^III -based MOF as an efficient fluorescent sensor for detecting metal ions, inorganic anions, nitro-compounds, and antibiotics simultaneously.

Ligand-Rearrangement-Induced Transformation from a 3D Supramolecular Network to a Discrete Octanuclear Cluster: A Good Detector for Pb2+ and Cr2O7 2

A three-dimensional supramolecular framework containing both left- and right-handed helixes, {[Zn(TTPA)Cl₂]·1.63H₂O} _n (1), has been converted to a novel octanuclear cluster containing a metal-organic framework, [Zn₈(ptptp)₆Cl₂](ClO₄)₂·4CH₃OH·2H₂O (1b), induced by ligand rearrangement during a solvothermal process. The luminescent properties of 1b indicate that the material can act as a selective probe toward Pb²⁺ and Cr₂O₇ ^2-.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Simultaneous Removals of Cr(VI) and Bisphenol A over Co(II)-Modified TiO2

To enhance the electron-hole separation and boost the practical performance of commercial titania (Degussa P25) under natural solar light, in this work, P25 was modified with Co(II) species (CoP25) through post-treatment with decomposition of Co-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid precursors in a wet chemical anchoring process. With appropriate Co(II) loading amount as molecular cocatalyst, the resulted CoP25-4 showed significantly improved photocatalytic performance for Cr(VI) reduction and bisphenol A (BPA) oxidation under UV-light irradiation. The coexistence of Cr(VI) and BPA promoted mutually the degradation of both pollutants. Under simulated solar light (AM 1.5G) illumination, the Cr(VI) reduction rate over CoP25-4 was 8.5 times enhanced compared with that over P25, whereas the simultaneous degradation rate of BPA over CoP25-4 was 8 times higher than that over P25. Further investigations indicated that the covalent atomic Co(II) anchoring on P25 significantly promoted the photogenerated electron-hole separation and facilitated Cr(VI) reduction via the formation of a Co(I) intermediate and simultaneously boosted BPA oxidation. Our results demonstrated a facile strategy to modify P25 with remarkably improved performance for the practical application in environmental pollution management under natural light excitation.

Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic Reduction of Cr(VI) over a Novel Square Nanotube Poly(Triazine Imide)/TiO2 Heterojunction

Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) pollution makes has a harmful impact on human health and the ecological environment. Photocatalysis reduction technology exhibits low energy consumption, high reduction efficiency and stable performance, and is playing an increasingly important role in chromium pollution control. Graphite-phase carbon nitride has been used to reduce Cr(VI) to the less harmful Cr(III) due to its visible light catalytic activity, chemical stability and low cost. However, it has a low specific surface area and fast recombination of electron–hole pairs, which severely restrict its practical application. In this work, a TiO2-modified poly(triazine imide) (PTI) square nanotube was prepared by the one-step molten salts method. The results showed the PTI had a square hollow nanotube morphology, with an about 100–1000 nm width and 60–70 nm thickness. During the formation of the PTI square tube, TiO2 nanoparticles adhere to the surface of the square tube wall by strong adsorption, and eventually form a PTI/TiO2 heterojunction. The PTI/TiO2-7 wt% heterojunction exhibited very good Cr(VI) reduction efficiency within 120 min. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the efficient separation and transport of photo-induced electron–hole pairs and the high specific surface area in the heterojunction structure.

One-pot synthesis of layered double hydroxide hollow nanospheres with ultrafast removal efficiency for heavy metal ions and organic contaminants

Herein, Mg/Fe layered double hydroxide (MF-LDH) hollow nanospheres were successfully prepared by a one-step thermal method. After the thermal treatment of MF-LDH nanospheres at 400 °C, the MF-LDH was converted into the corresponding oxide, Mg/Fe layered double oxide (MF-LDO), which maintained the hollow nanosphere structure. The MF-LDO hollow nanospheres exhibited excellent adsorption efficiency for both As(V) and Cr(VI), showing 99% removal within 5 min and providing maximum removal capacities of 178.6 mg g^-1 [As(VI)] and 148.7 mg g^-1 [Cr(VI)]. Moreover, it met the maximum contaminant level requirements recommended by World Health Organization (WHO); 10 ppm for As(V) and 50 ppm for Cr(VI) in 10 and 20 min, respectively. Furthermore, Au nanoparticles were successfully introduced in the MF-LDO hollow nanospheres, and the products showed a conversion rate of 100% for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol into 4-aminophenol within 5 min. It is believed that these excellent and versatile abilities integrated with a facile synthetic strategy will facilitate the practical application of this material in cost-effective wastewater purification.

Zr(IV)-Based Metal-Organic Framework with T-Shaped Ligand: Unique Structure, High Stability, Selective Detection, and Rapid Adsorption of Cr2O72- in Water

Dichromate is known for severe health impairments to organisms. New and valid strategies have been developed to rapidly detect and efficiently remove this pollutant. Constructing stable luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for dichromate recognition and removal from aqueous solution could provide a feasible resolution to this problem. Herein, a new luminescent Zr(IV)-MOF, Zr₆O₄(OH)₇(H₂O)₃(BTBA)₃ (BUT-39, BUT = Beijing University of Technology) was constructed through the reaction of a newly designed functionalized T-shaped ligand 4,4',4″-(1 H-benzo[ d]imidazole-2,4,7-triyl)tribenzoic acid (H₃BTBA) with zirconium salt. BUT-39 has a unique porous framework structure, in which Zr₆ cluster acts as a rare low-symmetric 9-connected node and BTBA^3- as a T-shaped 3-connected linker. As far as we know, this represents the first case of a (3,9)-connected Zr(IV)-MOF. BUT-39 could retain its framework integrity in boiling water, 2 M HCl aqueous solution, and pH 12 NaOH aqueous solution. Due to its good water stability and strong fluorescent emission, BUT-39 is then employed in fluorescence sensing for various ions in aqueous solution and shows good performance toward Cr₂O₇^2- selectively, at a low concentration and a short response time (<1 min). Simultaneously, it also exhibits excellent capacity to rapidly capture Cr₂O₇^2- (within 1 min) with a high uptake up to 1 mmol g^-1. Taking advantage of its excellent stability, sensitive and selective sensing, as well as rapid and high adsorption, BUT-39 is expected to be useful in Cr₂O₇^2- detection in and removal from water.

Ratiometric fluorescent detection of chromium(VI) in real samples based on dual emissive carbon dots

As we know, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was usually used as an additive to improve the color fastness during the printing and dyeing process, and thus posing tremendous threat to our health and living quality. In this work, the dual emissive carbon dots (DECDs) were synthesized through hydrothermal treatment of m-aminophenol and oxalic acid. The obtained DECDs not only exhibited dual emission fluorescence peaks (430 nm, 510 nm) under the single excitation wavelength of 380 nm, but also possessed good water solubility and excellent fluorescence stability. A ratiometric fluorescent method for the determination of Cr(VI) was developed using the DECDs as a probe. Under the optimal conditions, a linear range was obtained from 2 to 300 μM with a limit of detection of 0.4 μM. Furthermore, the proposed ratiometric fluorescent method was applied to the analysis of Cr(VI) in textile, steel, industrial wastewater and chromium residue samples with satisfactory recoveries (88.4-106.8%).

Enhanced Cr(VI) removal by polyethylenimine- and phosphorus-codoped hierarchical porous carbons

The amino- and phosphorus-codoped (N,P-codoped) porous carbons derived from oil-tea shells were facilely fabricated through a combination of phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) activation and amino (polyethylenimine, PEI) modification method. The as-synthesized carbon adsorbents were systematically characterized and evaluated for Cr(VI) removal in aqueous solutions. The relationship between adsorbent properties and adsorption behaviors was illustrated. Moreover, the influences of contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration, pH, coexisting anions and temperature were also investigated. The adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) could be perfectly described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Sips adsorption model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) on the carbon adsorbents synthesized in this work was 355.0 mg/g, and this excellent Cr(VI) capacity could be sustained with other coexisting anions. In addition to high surface area and suitable pore size distribution, the high Cr(VI) removal capacity is induced by rich heteroatoms incorporation and the Cr(VI) removal mechanism was clearly illustrated. Furthermore, the continuous column breakthrough experiment on obtained N,P-codoped carbon was conducted and well fitted by the Thomas model. This work revealed that PEI modification and P-containing groups could significantly enhance Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and make these N,P-codoped biomass-derived carbons potent adsorbents in practical water treatment applications.

Identification and assessment of ecotoxicological hazards attributable to pollutants in urban wet weather discharges

Urbanization has led to considerable pressure on urban/suburban aquatic ecosystems. Urban Wet Weather Discharges (UWWD) during rainfall events are a major source of pollutants leached onto and into urban surfaces and sewers, which in turn affect aquatic ecosystems. We assessed the ecotoxicity of the different compounds identified in UWWD and identified the hazard represented by each of them. To this end, hazard quotient (HQ) values were calculated for each compound detected in UWWD based on their predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) values and their maximum measured effluent concentrations (MEC_max) found in the dissolved part of UWWD. For the 207 compounds identified in UWWD, sufficient data existed for 165 of them to calculate their PNEC. The ecotoxicity of these compounds varied greatly. Pesticides represented a high proportion of the wide variety of hazardous compounds whose HQ values were calculated (94 HQ values), and they were among the most hazardous pollutants (HQ > 1000) transported by stormwater. The hazard of combined sewer overflows (CSO) was linked mainly to heavy metals and pharmaceutical compounds. Consequently, the monitoring of these pollutants should be a priority in the future. The hazard level of certain pollutants could have been underestimated due to their adsorption onto particles, leading to their low concentration in the dissolved phase of UWWD. Hence, an in-depth study of these pollutants will be required to clarify their effects on aquatic organisms.

Kinetic Discrimination of Metal Ions Using DNA for Highly Sensitive and Selective Cr3+ Detection

Most metal sensors are designed for a strong binding affinity toward target metal ions, and the underlying principle relies on binding thermodynamics. The kinetic aspect of binding, however, was rarely explored for sensing. In this work, the binding kinetics of 19 common or toxic metal ions are compared based on a fluorescence quenching assay using DNA oligonucleotides as ligands. Among these metals, Cr³⁺ shows uniquely slow fluorescence quenching kinetics, and the quenched fluorescence cannot be recovered by EDTA or sulfide. Most other metals quenched fluorescence instantaneously and can be fully recovered by these metal chelators. Various factors such as DNA sequence and length, chelating agent, pH, and fluorophore type were studied to understand the binding mechanism, leading to a unique two-stage binding model for Cr³⁺. This system has a wide dynamic range of up to 50 μM Cr³⁺ and a low limit of detection of 80 nM. It is also useful for measuring Cr³⁺ in lake water. This work proposes a new metal sensor design by monitoring binding kinetics with Cr³⁺ being a primary example.

Quantifying Cr(VI) Production and Export from Serpentine Soil of the California Coast Range

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is generated in serpentine soils and exported to surface and groundwaters at levels above health-based drinking water standards. Although Cr(VI) concentrations are elevated in serpentine soil pore water, few studies have reported field evidence documenting Cr(VI) production rates and fluxes that govern Cr(VI) transport from soil to water sources. We report Cr speciation (i) in four serpentine soil depth profiles derived from the California Coast Range serpentinite belt and (ii) in local surface waters. Within soils, we detected Cr(VI) in the same horizons where Cr(III)-minerals are colocated with biogenic Mn(III/IV)-oxides, suggesting Cr(VI) generation through oxidation by Mn-oxides. Water-extractable Cr(VI) concentrations increase with depth constituting a 7.8 to 12 kg/km² reservoir of Cr(VI) in soil. Here, Cr(VI) is produced at a rate of 0.3 to 4.8 kg Cr(VI)/km²/yr and subsequently flushed from soil during water infiltration, exporting 0.01 to 3.9 kg Cr(VI)/km²/yr at concentrations ranging from 25 to 172 μg/L. Although soil-derived Cr(VI) is leached from soil at concentrations exceeding 10 μg/L, due to reduction and dilution during transport to streams, Cr(VI) levels measured in local surface waters largely remain below California's drinking water limit.

Heterometallic Alkaline Earth-Lanthanide Ba(II)-La(III) Microporous Metal-Organic Framework as Bifunctional Luminescent Probes of Al(3+) and MnO4(.)

In this work a rigid asymmetrical tricarboxylate ligand p-terphenyl-3,4″,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3L) has been employed, and a unique heterometallic alkaline earth-lanthanide microporous luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Ba3La0.5(μ3-L)2.5(H2O)3(DMF)]·(3DMF)}n (1·3DMF) (DMF = dimethylformamide) has been isolated under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis demonstrates that 2D inorganic Ba-O-La connectivity can be observed in 1, which are further bridged via rigid terphenyl backbones of L(3-), forming a unique I(2)O(1)-type microporous luminescent framework. A 1D microporous channel with dimensionality of 9.151(3) Å × 10.098(1) Å can be observed along the crystallographic a axis. PXRD patterns have been investigated indicating pure phases of 1. The luminescence explorations demonstrated that 1 exhibits highly selective and sensitive sensing for Al(3+) over other cations with high quenching efficiency Ksv value of 1.445 × 10(4) L·mol(-1) and low detection limit (1.11 μM (S/N = 3)). Meanwhile 1 also exhibits highly selective and sensitive sensing for MnO4(-) over other anions with quenching efficiency Ksv = 7.73 × 10(3) L·mol(-1) and low detection limit (0.28 μM (S/N = 3)). It is noted that, when different concentrations of MnO4(-) solutions (0.5 to 100 μM) were dropped into the suspension of 1, the bright blue luminescence of the suspension observed under UV light can gradually change into pink color, indicating visually luminescent sensing, which makes the detection process of MnO4(-) more convenient in practical. The result also reveals that 1 represents the first example of bifunctional heterometallic alkaline earth-lanthanide MOF-based luminescent probes for selectively detecting Al(3+) and MnO4(-) in the water solutions.
