Photodecomposition of carbaryl in the presence of silver-doped zeolite Y and Suwannee River natural organic matter

The Photocatalytic Degradation of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin in the Presence of Silver–Titanium Based Catalysts

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) are persistent toxic compounds that are ubiquitous in the environment. The photodegradation of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in the presence of silver titanium oxide (AgTi) and silver titanium doped into the Y-zeolite (AgTiY) was tested using high (254 nm) and mid (302 nm) energy UV irradiation sources. AgTi and AgTiY, both showed success in the photodegradation of 2,3,7,8-TCDD dissolved in methanol/tetrahydrofuran solution. Both catalysts were found to effectively decompose TCDD at 302 nm (lower energy) reaching in between 98–99% degradation after five hours, but AgTiY showed better performance than AgTi at 60 min reaching 91% removal. Byproducts of degradation were evaluated using Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC–MS), resulting in 2,3,7-trichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, a lower chlorinated congener and less toxic, as the main degradation product. Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) was used to evaluate the relative toxicity of the degradation byproducts were a decrease in optical density indicated that some products of degradation could be potentially more toxic than the parent TCDD. On the other hand, a decrease in toxicity was observed for the samples with the highest 2,3,7,8-TCDD degradation, confirming that AgTiY irradiated at 302 nm is an excellent choice for degrading TCDD. This is the first study to report on the efficiency of silver titanium doped zeolites for the removal of toxic organic contaminants such as dioxins and furans from aquatic ecosystems.

Electrochemical sensor based on low silica X zeolite modified carbon paste for carbaryl determination

A new and simple approach for carbaryl determination in natural sample was proposed using Low Silica X (LSX) zeolite modified carbon paste electrode. LSX zeolite with a porous structure was incorporated into carbon paste electrode in the appropriate portion. The prepared electrode was then characterized using scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Various experimental parameters as the zeolite amounts, pH, accumulation time, and differential pulse voltammetric parameters were optimized. Under optimal conditions, a linear response was obtained in the range of 1-100 µM of carbaryl using differential pulse voltammetry with detection limit of 0.3 µM (S/N = 3). The sensors showed good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility and has been successfully applied for detection of carbaryl in tomato samples with good recoveries.

Photocatalysis of fenoxycarb over silver-modified zeolites

Two samples of silver doped into zeolite Y were prepared and characterized. ICP and SEM-EDS analysis indicate that the AgY1 sample contains twice the amount of silver compared to the AgY2 sample. Solid state luminescence spectroscopy shows variations in the emission modes of the site-selective luminescence where various luminophores might be excited upon selecting the proper excitation energy. The selected material effectively decomposed the pesticide fenoxycarb in aqueous solution. The photodecomposition of fenoxycarb reached 80 % upon irradiation for 60 min in the presence of the AgY1 catalyst. 2-(4-Phenoxy-phenoxy)ethyl] carbamic acid (1) and 1-amine-2-(phenoxy-4-ol) ethane (2) were identified as products for both uncatalyzed solution and the catalyzed fenoxycarb with AgY2 catalyst. Whereas, compound (2) was the only product identified in the catalyzed reaction with AgY1.

Role of temperature and Suwannee River natural organic matter on inactivation kinetics of rotavirus and bacteriophage MS2 by solar irradiation

Although the sunlight-mediated inactivation of viruses has been recognized as an important process that controls surface water quality, the mechanisms of virus inactivation by sunlight are not yet clearly understood. We investigated the synergistic role of temperature and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM), an exogenous sensitizer, for sunlight-mediated inactivation of porcine rotavirus and MS2 bacteriophage. Upon irradiation by a full spectrum of simulated sunlight in the absence of SRNOM and in the temperature range of 14-42 °C, high inactivation rate constants, k(obs), of MS2 (k(obs) ≤ 3.8 h(-1) or 1-log(10) over 0.6 h) and rotavirus (k(obs) ≤ 11.8 h(-1) or ∼1-log(10) over 0.2 h) were measured. A weak temperature (14-42 °C) dependence of k(obs) values was observed for both viruses irradiated by the full sunlight spectrum. Under the same irradiation condition, the presence of SRNOM reduced the inactivation of both viruses due to attenuation of lower wavelengths of the simulated sunlight. For rotavirus and MS2 solutions irradiated by only UVA and visible light in the absence of SRNOM, inactivation kinetics were slow (k(obs) < 0.3 h(-1) or <1-log(10) unit reduction over 7 h) and temperature-independent for the range considered. Conversely, under UVA and visible light irradiation and in the presence of SRNOM, temperature-dependent inactivation of MS2 was observed. For rotavirus, the SRNOM-mediated exogenous inactivation was only important at temperatures >33 °C, with low rotavirus k(obs) values (k(obs) ≈ 0.2 h(-1); 1-log(10) unit reduction over 12 h) for the temperature range of 14-33 °C. These k(obs) values increased to 0.5 h(-1) at 43 °C and 1.5 h(-1) (1-log(10) reduction over 1.6 h) at 50 °C. While SRNOM-mediated exogenous inactivation of MS2 was triggered by singlet oxygen, the presence of hydrogen peroxide was important for rotavirus inactivation in the 40-50 °C range.
